Lost Discussion Group: You Are the Emmys
I realized after posting my Emmy reactions this morning that I mentioned not a word about Lost being nominated for best drama nor Michael Emerson for best supporting actor. So I decided to treat the omission as not a bug but a feature and to milk an entirely new post out of it. Let's take a week away from the mythology and theory-spinning of Lost and look at it as a plain old TV show, with real actors playing fake people.
I doubt there are many people here who would deny that Emerson's deserving, for turning what started as essentially a bit part into possibly the show's most compelling character. But let's look at the show's bench strength. Who do you think is Lost's most underappreciated actor or actress? I'll kick things off by nominating Harold Perrineau, simply for taking a character who was despised—not just by the other characters but often by fans—and making his treachery understandable and compelling. (Which made it all the more disappointing that Michael go tthe shaft with an underwhelming send-off.)

A Hillary-Less Poehler Moves On
The news lately has been full of former Hillary Clinton workers moving on to new employment, and you can now add one more to the list. Reports are that Amy Poehler, who at one point seemed to have a lock on impersonating the president through at least January 2013, will leave Saturday Night Live to star in NBC's spinoff of The Office.
Which, incidentally, will apparently no longer be a spinoff of The Office. The show, writes Bill Carter in the New York Times, "will be the next project of the creative team behind 'The Office' but is not now expected to be a direct spinoff of that series... It may have some stylistic similarities, but none of the characters from “The Office” will be moving to the new series." Anyone hoping that Creed would move to Seattle to host a radio show will have to dream on.

TCA Roundup: ABC, Katie, Kimmel, Katherine
* Katie Holmes, a.k.a. Mrs. Tom Cruise, will guest on Eli Stone next season. The dramedy—from Greg Berlanti, with whom she worked on Dawson's Creek—is about a lawyer/prophet who is troubled by visions that make him seem like some kind of religious lunatic. Gee, where would she ever have gotten any experience [remainder of joke redacted by Time Inc. legal department]?
* The panel session with the producers of Scrubs is not, for some reason, interrupted by an overly long, disappointing fantasy sequence.
* The network battles the bad buzz on Life on Mars.
* Jimmy Kimmel impersonates a reporter, while ABC president Steve McPherson impersonates somebody who is delighted to announce that Katherine Heigl will be sticking around to bash Grey's Anatomy.

Emmy Nominations: It's Not HBO, It's TV

The 2008 Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and I watched live, an experience mainly worthwhile for the experience of watching them flash a BREAKING NEWS title card on E!, as if it were a presidential assassination. I'm working on a print TIME review right now and I may have more to post later, but click on the jump for some of my first reactions—i.e., the usual critics' whinging about who Emmy left out, and even a few words of praise:
