The Morning After: Idol Watch Edition

Spoilers for last night's American Idol elimination coming up... after the break!

I don't often predict surprises correctly on American Idol, so when I do, sorry, you're gonna have to deal with a little gloating. Toldja! I totally called it!

OK, not totally. I missed Syesha altogether, and though she's never going to win this competition I still don't get why she ended up in the bottom two. And while I did guess who would be going home, that call was easy like Chikeze. We'll miss you, big guy.

But I did anticipate that Jason Castro's a-little-too-phoned-in take on Sting would give him a bottom three scare this week, and who knows?, it may turn out to be good for him. Simon had a point; he may have been coasting to this point. (It was kind of cute how he sheepishly admitted after the judging that he couldd have practiced more--like a kid apologizing to his Mom for skipping a piano lesson--but at this stage, as they say, he's got to bring it every week.) Hopefully getting a little dread in his dreads will make him stronger.

I have to ask, though: did anyone out there notice a note of cockiness in his banter with Ryan this week? When Jason came out, he said that he was sure he was in the bottom three because, once they sent him out last with Kristy Lee, he could tell the producers were setting up a "shocker." Now, I thought this was kind of cute; after all, he was right, and it's always refreshing to see an Idol contestant admit that they're gaming out the producers' stunts the same way we do at home. On the other hand, I probably wouldn't have thought it were so cute if I were Kristy Lee, and I'm curious how it played out there in America.

It's like politics: there are just certain things that, though true, you don't want to have come out of the mouth of the candidate himself. It may not be a big deal, since Jason didn't seem mean-spirited, and his aw-shucks candor makes me inclined to cut him a break. But then, as we all know, the media is totally in the tank for Jason Castro, so I'm probably taking it easy on him. Was this a one-time only scare for Jason, or should he be nervous?

Hee hee Jason should be nervous ONLY if he actually wants to win the contest. He's already gotten a lot of visibility, and he's done it without deviating from the kind of music he would likely actually perform/write/sing/whatever. I kind of see him like I saw Amanda - it might be the opposite of the point he is trying to make to "branch out" and be "versitile" (aka more commercially-friendly, more mainstream, more traditional).

About his comments, I will confess that I actually didn't watch the results show - just too much wasted time out of my week. But I read somewhere this morning that Ryan cut Jason off before he finished what he was saying, before he finished giving the context for his statement, which may have made him seem cocky when that wasn't his intention. Not having seen it, I'll have to rely on what y'all noticed.

I was surprised that Carly wasn't in the bottom 3 (not that she can't sing - she totally can - but Tuesday nite kinda brought out that scary part of her that seems to turn people off), although she is a bit more likable than Syesha so I guess I can see why that happened.

I think that Syesha, Kristy Lee, and Ramielle ALL should have gone home before Chikezie. That said, it is hard for me to get too worked up when people who had no realistic chance of getting to the finals get kicked off "early" - if Chikeze had built on his momentum from a few weeks ago, he could have been more of a contender. Still, the unfairness of the universe does evoke mild irritation. . .

Lori:

Agreed. I found myself (once again for a contestant in AI this season) wanting to take a sock and stuff it in his mouth - too much info Jason!!!! At least it's something that Jason seemed to spend a few moments thinking about during the day - his possible bottom 3 spot.

We're down to 9 - my bet would be that Jason can go top 6, mayyyy-be top 5ish - unless he pulls something new and interesting out of his dreads...

Lori:

Thumbs up Shara. Another "goes to show" that AI is a singing AND popularity contest. Maybe vice versa!

And since you didn't see the show...incase you were wondering (like I was) Carly announced she is NOT pregnant - one of the rumors apparently flying this week.

shara says:

Hee hee, I hadn't heard the rumors. Does that basically mean that people are saying that she looks like she's gained weight?

Warning: Random Rant To Follow:
What's up with all the fake controversy? This season has been very high on both manufactured controversy and conspiracy theories, possibly even moreso than previous seasons. There's the Carly being/not being pregnant, the Carly being pro/not pro, the David Hernandez stripper thing (and the resulting double-standard/not-double-standard debate), the picture of Ramielle possibly groping/not groping some other chick, the Robbie (?) whats-his-face wig thing, and a bunch of folks have been complaining regularly over at the EW comment boards that it is a conflict of interest for Randy to be a judge when he makes music for the same label that had previously lost a bunch of money on Carly (back in the day). I've heard more of the longstanding accusations that the show is homophobic and/or racist. Plus the annual is Paula drunk/not drunk, sane/not sane, recreating with Simon/not recreating with Simon, etc. I'm sure I'm forgetting more.

Its all that that makes me almost ashamed for watching the show. Combine that with the omnipresent product placement, the soul-sucking commercialization of willing, eager young people, the way-overdrawn results show, and the homophobic banter between Ryan and Simon, and I tend to wonder why the hell I watch this show that completely contradicts most of the values that I hold dear as a person. I tend to not watch other reality shows that upset me about the state of humanity (no Big Brother, no Bachelor, no shows where groups of people are put in houses together with alcohol and a shortage of appropriate clothing and manners) and/or the fascist-corporate state. But for some reason I keep making an exception for this one nearly every year. Maybe its just that its an actual "event" - lord, everyone I know watches AI and loves to talk about the developments each week. there are lots of folks I'm acquainted with (a lot through work) that I don't have hardly anything else in common with, but we can find neutral territory with American Idol.

Anyway, all that said, I think that Syesha is gonna be in trouble next week - if she couldn't stay out of the bottom three on a week where she gave her best performance ever (and one of the best of the nite), what's gonna happen when she doesn't totally deliver? Cause a fantastic performance one week will just lead the judges to say "It wasn't your best performance" from then on out.

i think that with some of the folks, the one good performance, or the one bad performance just isn't enough to change america's mind about a person (kristy's very american america song aside), of course if they keep backing it up i think the tide can turn either way...

and i agree with shara, i stopped watching AI for seasons because i was over the repititive nature of the show and am reminded now of why i don't love the format, and that i don't always really like what america thinks... but i am clearly sucked back in again.

and go david cook and here's hoping michael johns is on an upswing.
