Having almost single handedly elevated universal health care, poverty, the attrition of the middle class and the need for a rigorous, comprehensive response to global warming and environmental issues to the forefront of American politics, I am shocked that John Edwards is not even on the list of most influential people in the world today. He might not technically be in the race anymore, but the issues he championed are now central to our national debate, and may very well set the agenda of our next president.

I would say that Hillary Clinton is the most influential person because she has Also transcended the stigma women have in politics. She is the first woman that I can remember with the skills usually attributed to men (organization, strength and specificity on issues) to be close enough to the presidency of the most powerful nation of the free world. Her candidacy transcends stereotypes and goes way beyond the fact that she was a president's spouse. She has proven, in fact, that she is more effective without him than with him. She has prevailed even when everything has been stacked against her. For so many in the world she is an example, whether she "succeeds" or not.

Hillary Clinton hands down! No one has worked harder this year to achieve a dream. She is a warrior who has brilliant ideas for the U.S.A. I say Hillary Clinton should be number 1 on your list, and I do not feel there is even a close second.

She has had to tolerate a bias media, and has still managed to keep her focus. Me, and all of my friends are so inspired by her.

I read story everyday of people who had lost hope in their life because of hardship, but who have come to believe again after listening to Barack. Also, He is bringing a new kind of politic and hopefully will help us get over politic of personal attack and focus more ont he issue. His race speech was historical and needed to be given. I applaud him for his courage

Please take some time to view the below link. It is From Perez Hilton’s website.

http://perezhilton.com/2008-04-03-time-100

Is this even fair to the rest of the people on this list? He is using this as a tool to become more famous, instead of having a true poll.

How could the results become accurate when it is only one group of people voting for him… the people that read his website?

He does not inspire people to do good, or achieve anything besides naked panty shots, failing artists and having a worthless unwelcoming attitude to people. Not only am I ashamed of this nomination, but I am disgusted that a magazine that has articles written about Irelands Prime Minister, and then having a person who is only famous for making others look bad. I ask how this is influential.

Has our world come to such measures that we have a blogger, with nothing better to do but to put others down a person of stature?

I understand everyone has a right to freedom of speech, and I am guilty of reading his blog just as many others do, but are you really going to continue promoting his nasty website?

We really do show the world, America’s true colors with polls like this. I bet more then 80% of the people that are voting, are voting for each person more then once, and I’m sure that if you had more proper controls on this you could actually get better results.

For things like this, I am glad to have cancelled my subscription to your magazine.

Your comment: I would have included Hilary but the sniper incident knocked off her name. The whole world is waiting to see if America will nominate a proven lier as a presidential candidate. The Democrats and indeed we Americans cannot afford to send a message to the world that we don't care about integrity, truth and trustworthiness. Well I am confident if the democrats ignore this and nominate her, we the Republicans will let the entire country know in November that America cannot have as her president someone who is proven to be a lier. That's a message America cannot afford to send.

Al Gore is definitely the single most influential and contributing person in the world. He has changed the way we all think of the environment. It's now an important issue on the table because of him, as it should be. He has a great many other contributions as well.

Hillary Clinton has brought a lot of things to the table, I believe I would make her the second most influential person. A woman can now be taken seriously as a presidential candidate. Health care in America is a serious problem, which will be corrected one way or another, largely because of her influence.

Barack Obama, especially with his recent race speech, is also in my top 5. He will lead us into a world where race does not matter. He speaks in a captivating and presidential manner.

I'm surprised that Leonardo DiCaprio is not on the list! He is in my top 5! He's done a lot of good work. I am expecting him to be president in about 16 - 20 years. He has been very influential with his recent movies and documentary. He will have even more contributions as time goes on.

Elizabeth Edwards and John Edwards should both be on the list. They both have brought a lot of things to the table. They are great people, both of them.

For me Stephenie Meyer has had the biggest influence in my life for 2007. I love vampire stories and I've read a lot of them, but Meyer was able to take the typical and overused human-vampire romance story to a whole new level. I really and honestly feel for these characters. The emotions are so well put together within the books that I can't help but ache for Edward and Bella.

The way that the Twilight books have influenced me is by triggering my own creativity, not only have I written fanfiction for this series but I've also branched out and began writing my own original fiction again.

And while Meyer's book may not be able to reach as many people like JK Rowling's did because of their content, I think that the Twilight fanbase is a much more devoted fanbase (and some would say eccentric and fanatic.... And I'd have to agree.)

Stephenie Meyer: roll model that is positive for children and parents. I’m so amazed at how strong and encouraging she is, that she is not also a writer but she’s a mother of three sons. I’m very family oriented and to see that she has been able to write such amazing books, visit the set of the movie, tour the United States along with the globe and yet still be able to be a mother and a wife. And she is also a wonderful roll model for others by how and what she did to be published in the first place. She didn’t really know how to be published but she was able to do what it took so that Twilight was up on the shelves, in the hands of children and yet still able to feed and tuck her kids in at night. She is also is encouraging children to read with wonderful works that aren’t, in most cases, filled with hate like the rest of the world seems to be, but with love and how she made something that we general have a fear of and write it in a positive reflection where they don’t want to kill humans, makes Stephenie Meyer even more of a good influence on the youth. She wrote I believe in her MySpace blog, step number 10, thus: Keep writing. That part is more important than anyone else in the world ever reading your book. Do it for yourself. Those words written, keep writing…do it for yourself, have been inspiration for others who might be writing or have written something but yet haven’t had the nerve to publish it. SHE DESERVES TO BE #1!!! WE LOVE YOU STEPHENIE!

Her knowledge about the problems of our country and the right path to solve them is unsurpassed. Also she is a patriotic American that loves her country.

Senator Hillary Clinton has my vote of most influential people. She has been consistent in helping the middle class throughout her career. She has shown that she cares and wants a better future for all people in the United States of America. She has been to 80+ countries around the world representing the values and concerns of the American people for a better world. Whatever happens with the electoral process Mrs. Clinton is and will be an example to all women of courage, strength, tenacity, smartness, strong family values, loving and protective mother; with a strong spirit of compassion and concern for our children's future.

hillary is the one i consider influential in my life. this is because i like her and believe she would be a fantastic president for once in our lives.

but she is influential in my life, because this campaign has become personal to me, it has affected my life, because of how much time i spend concerned about it.

after the whole gore thing, i hated my parties weekness, i changed to independent. but when hillary came along i thought i could be proud again, that one of our staunchest democrats, would bring the party back to the values of the democratic party... instead, she has been maligned, just as gore was, but by democrats. so the influence she will exert on me is, if she gets shafted, i will turn my back on democrats forever, and become a republican. AT LEAST THEY DONT EAT THEIR OWN...

I think that Mitt Romney should be on the list. He has opened many doors for people of the mormon faith and for other faiths that have not been a mainstream norm, like islam. The mormon faith is one of the fastest growing religions in the world and there are over 13 million world-wide and half are in the united states. Mitt Romney represents the 6 million members and their beliefs. It would be a shame to snub a man who has done so much for a faith that is more american-grown and worldy, modernly accepted.

First choice: Senator Obama for being the most unifying selection of any candidate we have ever had the opportunity to vote for in decades. He transcends politics with his unique ability to reach across the party isle is something sorely needed in this time in our history.

LAST choice: Senator Clinton. She obviously cares more about her own political future than that of her political party . She is more than willing to allow the opposition party to win an election than to accept defeat. She has become an embarrassment to her party, and a God send to the Republican Party.

Rain is giving us lots of joy and pleasure, being a great role model to the young people by his talent and hard work. And he's also been interested in environment and a social problem, donated to the pubic a lot. He is a quite respectable celebrity unlike lots of other spoilt pop stars.

I think My Chemical Romance should be on the list. Here are the reasons; They make thousands of people feel like they belong and that they don't have to be perfect. They have saved millions of people’s lives. They inspire so many people. They mean the world to millions of people, including me. They're heroes, inspiration, saviours and idols. Their music moves some many millions of people in a way no words can describe. This band is the reason some kids are still here. They save them from being suicidal and give them a reason to live. Some of the kids they've saved never knew the meaning of friends before but when they go to concerts and see all these other children with the same problems or just same interests as them they fit in so perfectly and make so many friends. Sure, the fans don’t always agree and sometimes we argue about the stupidest things but we’re still an army and we’ll keep on fighting. No matter what. This band does make a difference and the millions of fans are living proof of that.

Hi !!! That's always interesting to watch this list and realize how much art celebrities (by this I mean singers, actors and such) are almost as influent as politicians or economics main actors.

Anyway.

I was expecting a name to pop up this year, but maybe it's still too early for it : Dong Bang Shin Ki, TVXQ, Tohoshinki... no matter how you would call those 5 korean men but I do think they are really influent, as much as Rain and maybe more in the whole Asia for sure, but in the States too judging the buzz about their venue to this year's Hollywood Bowl concert and the insane amount of tickets sold because of it... When Rain was first listed last year I was thinking those boys would be listed too sooner or later. To show why I am thinking this, here are some facts about them : - whatever they would promote would become an instant hit, being beverages or school uniforms or scooters or roasted chicken ! - Their fanclub is the biggest with more than 800 000 fans (listed in the 2008 Guiness of Records) - They drive most of their fans (being in the fanclub or not) to do valuable stuff, such as spilled oil cleaning on this beach in Korea, donations to orphanages and caritative associations, protecting environment by producing re-usable bags and giving the whole benefits to UNICEF... and more. Not talking about their general "you have to be healthy and study well !" comments who are widely followed by their teen fanbase... and teens are the future, right ? ;) - They are worldwidely known and loved as showed by the website J-Ent who did an extensive research about them and their fanbase.

I think that even if they are not that suitable for 2007 they would be for 2008... Please keep an eye on the, too ! I'm curious to know what Time would say about them :)

Hillary Rodham Clinton should top the list--for her principles, guts, wisdom and vision for America and the rest of the world.

Benazir Bhutto--for her courage and single-minded purpose to save Pakistan from the throes of a fascist military regime; and, like Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino of the Philippines, for giving her life in the process.

Osama bin Laden--for his misplaced religiosity that borders on fanaticism and sheer lunacy that, surprisingly, has forced the Superpowers to respect, even if grudgingly, the ethnicity of his (Osama's) fellow Muslims and other cultural minorities, as well as the vision they stand for. If Osama & Company would just give the world a breathing spell from their "terroristic" acts, and try their hands at being peace brokers (all must admit the folly and stupidity of war), then history would be much kinder to them--and the world a much peaceful place to live in, for us, our children, grandchildren, and the generations yet to come.

And, too, Manny Pacquiao must be included--for showing to the world that a Filipino has got a big fighting heart that no white (European/American) or black (African) man, Mexican or any Asian world boxing champion wannabe can ever damper (and yet retain his spirituality and humility).

And finally, the long-suffering Filipino people--who are showing signs that a second wind of political activism is in the offing, and that a real People Power (of the 1986 cachet of authentincity) is bound to give a despot masquerading as a democratic ruler a dose of her own medicine.

100% Hillary-on the key issues of this century, including the rights of women, human, family and chilren's rights, healthcare and the protection of the less priveleged, she has been a leader ahead of her time of these issues that others, most notably this year, Benazir Bhutto, have courageously fought and died for.

Hillary Clinton!!! No fancy talks, JUST SOLUTION. Hillary Clinton speaks for me.

Posted by Elizabeth in New York
Barack Obama is my pick for the most influential person. He transcends politics and has brought a whole new generation into the political spectrum. I have never seen a politician that I feel speaks directly to me. Senator Obama does. That is why I have been volunteering and working for him for the past six months.

Of course all are excellent people but my votes go to RAIN, a young Korean man at age 25 who has influenced and inspired so many. Rain has incredible talent as a singer/dancer/actor, it is always amazing to watch him performing on the stage or acting in the movie/TV drama. But Rain's success does not only rely on his talent. His success is due to his "endless effort, endless endurance, endless modesty" since his very young age. He inspired his fans especially the young generation by taking tough challenges one after another with no fear. No one is perfect but Rain shows that one can make endless effort moving towards perfect . We know that Rain will become the whole world's Rain because he's still working so hard despite the huge success he's achived today. We love Rain and will always support him unconditionally.

Why is an Internet blogger higher than Nelson Mandela? Something is seriously wrong with the world.

Posted by Jessica in Streamwood
You should have added Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy, they're trying to help out the world a lot. Plus, Patrick Stump can do a lot, he's just awesome.

Who's not hot this year or at all? Ashlee Simpson, for that matter, none of the Simpsons' are hot at all. They shouldn't be even musicians or anything like that.

1.Pete Wentz. 2.Fall Out Boy 3.Rain 4.Tim Burton 5.Johnny Depp

Hiliary Clinton. If this women becomes the next President of the United States. It will be an historical event. This country is ready for a change...a change in gender as our commander and chief.

Posted by Megan in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
I just can't believe that Perez Hilton is, so far, higher on the list than Nelsen Mandela...that says a lot about society (and none of it is good). Humanitarians, world leaders, activists, THEY should be high up on the list..not media freakshows.

Shakira should be nominated

Women everywhere can get their inspiration from Hillary Clinton. She can debate any issue, at any time. I watched her on Mad Money and was amazed at how she could articulate the economic issues facing our country. On every issue, she is clear, and knowledgeable. There is not another candidate with her broad knowledge of world and domestic issues.

I think that Stephany Meyer is the person that inspired me the most. She was a single mother and now she is a writer. She has brought a new series that i am hooked to. She has a briliant mind and because of her I am in love with the "TWILIGHT" series.

Angelina joilie.....why isn't she there? With her being an ambassador for the UN, all of her charity works, and contributions to those in need. And then the fact she is a mother of four, pregnant and a working mother. She is an inspiration to women everywhere.

Al Pacino, because one look at him and you're lost forever! Seriously, he's a great actor, one of the best of all times. I'm not sure if he deserves this, cause I don't really know how big of a deal this "award" is... Anyway, just give him another Oscar ;P

I'd say Britney Spears. She's had a rough year. Image tarnished etc but the world still wants more. Can't deny it - the girl still has alot of influence. Amazing really.
