I think the real story here is how once the Socialist bloggers discover this poll, they will send out action alerts to all fellow travelers to spike the results. Prediction: by midnight 4/7/08 EST the poll will have the Huffpo site and the Kos site ranked 1 and 2 and Ace of Spades towards the bottom.

I'm so glad you selected Velveteen Rabbi.
The Cassandra Pages (cassandrapages.com) is another remarkably well-designed and well-written blog. As good as anything you might find within the pages of a book. I've been reading it for years, and find it so close to the pulse of life, and so full of human experience and feeling.
These quieter and less corporate blogs are an important part of the future of the internet. In an age of pre-packaged experiences, they'll be the ones people turn to for comfort and wisdom.

I think, really, that listing "icanhascheezburger.com" as one of the five most overrated blogs on the internet might just smack of a tiny bit of elitism on your part. If it is, as you say, one of the ten most popular blogs, perhaps you might spend a little more time asking yourselves why that might be the case rather than joking that it's evidence of the fall of western society. Perhaps it's something to do with the often witty plays on recurrant memes on the site that make people feel like they're on the right side of an inside joke, or perhaps people just like cats (this is me, shrugging). It's easier to dismiss a thing we do not fully understand than to try to understand it, but sometimes the answers can tell us a great deal about western society, and, perhaps, why it hasn't fallen just yet. Cheers :)

Original name: www.whyblackwomenareangry.blogspot.com
It has recently been renamed:
diaryofacontentblackwoman...
This Site is Extraordinary; Truly, a Cut Above! The fact that the name of the blogspot has changed is - in my opinion, indicative of both the challenge of trying to capture in a short phrase - the Author's Perspective as well as the renaming of the site is reflective of the Author's Perpetual Growth.
She manages to Blend Current Events, Commentary and Inspiration into quite an enjoyable meal; and it's Good Food - Energizing.
She even broadcasts live on BlogTalkRadio.com.
Interesting, Great Stuff! What a Great Forum for So Many! I bet with more and more people becoming comfortable with joining, learning, and sharing on the Web, this site is going to be one the most visited on line. Everybody should Keep your Eye on This One!

I read GAWKER with the same delight that I used to bring to the old Henry Luce-era unsigned and snarky articles in the TIME magazine of my youth. There is something to be said for zing in writing, and while it's not universally appropriate or desirable, it is great for comic relief. I think of it, technologically speaking, as a scandal sheet minus the sheet. The trees of the world are glad.

Ars Technica is like The Economist of technology blogs - snarky but intelligent. Itc covers a wide range of technical and social-relating-to-technical topics.
I was rather disappointed to see it relegated with "I can has cheezburger" to over-rated blogs. The reasoning behind your decision seems to be "I don't understand it," which is a pretty silly reason to rate down one of the top-rated tech sites. And by the way, the "Art of Technology" is a reference back to the days when Art did not just refer to painting and sculpture, etc, but to 'Artisanship" and craftsmanship, which it seems that Ars Technica does quite a good job of covering, at least it seems so to me as a member of the field.

Ten million hits for Ace of Spades over its entire existence... why, yes, that does sound like a lot! It's almost half again what Daily Kos pulled in this week! Though if you count lifetime against lifetime then you get an estimated seven hundred forty four million hits on Daily Kos, which would have put the matter in proper perspective.

Daily Kos is one of my favorites, even though I don't fit the demographic. There's a local blog here in Portland called "Furious Nads!". It's a personal blog run by a fellow a lot of us here admire, by a fellow who goes by the nom-de-guerre of "The One True b!X".
In an earlier incarnation, he posted a running commentary of one man's chronicling of the city and governmental life of Portland called "Portland Communique" (http://communique.portland.or.us), which really set the standard on what involved citizen-aware local government blogging SHOULD be like.
Having sort of burned out (my words, not his) on that after an unbelievable stout run, he moved on to a more personal chronicle, the aforementioned "Furious Nads!" (http://furiousnads.com). While it is more personal, he's a notable figure in that he's one of the prime movers behind the charity drive in which the Joss Whedon "Firefly" movie, "Serenity", is used as a nationwide fundraiser for the "Equality Now" Charity (check "Serenity Now/Equality Now"), about which I can say no wrong.
He's an inspiration to me (http://zehnkatzen.blogpsot.com) personally, and has shown a great deal of us how blogs can be useful and valuable and empowering for citizens.

I'm surprised there's no mention of Autoblog, http://www.autoblog.com/. I've been reading Autoblog for a few years now (I actually saw it namedropped in a Steve Jobs presentation showing off podcasts & blogs at Macworld long ago) and am consistently impressed with the content. I think Autoblog really exemplifies blogging's ability to usurp traditional media in the speed to deliver a story. Whereas I used to get automotive news every month in publications like Car & Driver, Motortrend, etc. I've completely abandoned those magazines in favor of reading Autoblog. At events like the New York auto show Autoblog posted live text coverage of new car announcements, completely disrupting traditional automotive media's response to such events. Beyond speed of coverage I've noticed Autoblog strikes a great balance of reporting and commentary. If you have any interest in cars you owe it to yourself to check out Autoblog in my opinion.

It was TPM that first noticed the spate of US Attorney firings, started to put all the pieces together and broke the story, only to first be pooh-poohed by the mainstream press, until it became obvious that the Bush administration had indeed politicized the Justice Department to a level never seen since the founding of this great nation.

Also second the comment about this being very US-centric. As a Time reader here in Asia I'm a little disappointed by how blogging is sometimes reported - there's actually as big (if not bigger) blogging community in countries like Japan. I do understand though that Time is for an English speaking readership but even so, there are many amazing non US blogs written in English.

Oh no you did *not*. That's my venerable/crusty employer you're exceptionalizing.
Really, it's an interesting mix, but weirdly hodgepodge; you're covering such a wide range of content and presentation that it feels more apples and oranges (and kumquats, and durians, and...) than something that makes sense on a reductive single-continuum 1-10 scale.
Looking at in terms of like vs. like, though it'd be a touch more complicated and less jazzy of a hook than "Top x", would make a bit more sense. Soem of these are generalist linkblogs, some are pretty explicitly political, some are niche subject -- there's a real disconnect to the idea of setting them all in a row.
(Now, if you really want to wonk out and pull something from this other than stuntish traffic-generation, you should consider an analysis of the IPs of your voters, and the referral path from selected blogs to the voting page. On an Internet where Ron Paul wins the US Presidential race, the interesting question isn't who gets the votes but who *gives* them.)

the huffington post certainly has some interesting content, but one thing that recently really put me off to them was my attempt to add a critical (but polite and civil) comment to a blog article that had many inaccuracies - not only were my critical comments not posted, but a response to them WAS posted with purported details only the author would have - all of the allowed comments were strictly praiseworthy
as a result, i am 99.9% sure that at least in SOME cases, the authors of Huffington Post blog articles are given the right to filter which comments they will allow to be posted - maybe that's not a deal big deal for some, but it sure makes me less trustworthy of reading HP articles given the lack of critical public feedback on mis-represented facts
someone OTHER than the author's should filter the comments for relevance and profanity, but NOT critical comments - i for one no longer tune into the Huffington Post
But I do recommend keeping an eye on http://www.alleyinsider.com (yes, THAT blodgett)
Posted by steveg in los angeles
btw, the Huffington Post article i was referring to in my comment above was written (and very likely had all critical and corrective feedback comments filtered) by new-age pop health author Deepak Chopra

Drop in to the dKos and find a blogger who gets you, in a way you wish your real, live best-friend since 10th grade did. "Since I can't be bothered to actually, you know, read it, I'll just copy what I've read somewhere else. I understand why you rated slashdot as you did, though it's not really a blog.
I enjoy icanhascheezburber, dis it if you want, to each his own.
But you're way off base on arstechnica. It's not a blog to start with, it's a tech news site with discussion forums. Moreover, you totally mischaracterized the site in your attempt to be pithy. The way I see it, it speaks in part to the intersection of social and technological issues. And I find the discussions attached to the articles to be often well-informed (much more so than slashdot).

I suppose it should come as no surprise that your top 50 blog list would be slanted heavily left. What is your criteria for determining whether a blog belongs on the list? There are certainly a number of very popular right of center political blogs. Did you even look at any of them?

Huffington post is my favored, lately Grillo'S Blog
is full of profanities and I guess he has lost control
of the posts because busy in the political campaign.
They censor comments maybe with some interest
and publish offensive comments that in US you will go
in jail immediately for sexual harassment.
