Travel Update: That Berlin Speech
The campaign has finally selected a site: The Siegessaule, or Victory Column
The announcement came through this morning:
CHICAGO, IL - On Thursday, July 24, 2008, Senator Barack Obama will visit Berlin, Germany. Obama will give a major speech on the historic U.S.-German partnership, and the need to strengthen Transatlantic relations to meet 21st century challenges in front of the Siegessäule at the Grosser Stern in Tiergarten Park. The event is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required.
THURSDAY, JULY 24
Berlin, Germany
BARACK OBAMA SPEECH
Siegessäule at the Grosser Stern in Tiergarten Park
Berlin, Germany
The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
Gates open to the public: 4:00 PM
Public Entrance: Straße des 17. Juni at Brandenburg Gate
Event is on the east side of the park. Public should use the following public transportation stops: Potsdamer Platz, Under den Linden, and Lehrter-Stadtbahnhof.
Word is that the candidate has left Afghanistan, presumably for Iraq. The charter takes off tonight from Chicago to Amman. Word is that we won't be seeing the candidate until Tuesday, though he will be doing a round of network interviews, starting with "Face the Nation" this morning.

Have John McCain or his supporters started whining publicly about this yet? Seems like that's all they've got any more--whining.

Thanks J.J. I just watched it.
Atrios is quite right. It's bizarre how excited everybody gets about "liberal Olberman" being on a tv, spouting "liberalism", when Fox news, Glenn Beck, Joe Scarborough are on all day. That is ok.
1 liberal on tv, and people freak out. This is a "liberal media"?
Keith isn't that liberal anyways. He dislikes Bush and Iraq. How often is he talking about regressive taxation, or the environment, or....

Siegessaule, the 1873 victory column commemorating the formation of a consolidated Germany. Hitler added a fourth section honoring himself and had it moved to its present location.
http://www.lsax.com/trip/journals/europe_2.html
Why would Obama choose this site, which Hitler was the last person to have laid hands on, and made it a monument to commemorate himself?
Maybe it is to show his solidarity with the Gay and Lesbians of Germany, as the "victory column" is now the iconic name of the German Gay and Lesbian Magazine of the same name.
Wow, this should be fun. Here is a little film of the "Love Parade" which is the main event for the Siegessäule. And the spot for nude sunbathing too!!

Rustydog.. man.. you really are one mouthbreathing inane Philistine.
Posted by Interloper | July 20, 2008 9:59 AM
It would be nice to see him speak at Brandenberg AFTER he gets elected.
And I still think Bush intervened to keep him away from Brandenberg.
So far, my take is Obama has generated a very decent foreign policy victory.
Posted by 53_3 | July 20, 2008 10:12 AM
Oh my the dreaded Philistines!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, try harder there bucko.
As Obama states, I am "just a bitter, gun toting, God fearing church-goer".
You should stick to the party line, Interloper. One will soon think that the Democrats are loosing their touch.

"So far, my take is Obama has generated a very decent foreign policy victory."
53,
I predict the talking heads will be tying themselves into knots attempting to salvage something out of this for McCain.
I look for wall to wall coverage of how well the surge is working like you have never seen before. All those war supporters who have been complaining about no good stories of the troops accomplishments in Iraq ever getting presented will finally start seeing a lot more. Also a lot of criticism of the media landing interviews with Obama.
Little effort will be made to find out what Maliki really said. Or the reason why it was dialed back so quickly. Little attention will be paid to the fact that the Iraqi spokesman in clearing up Maliki's remarks really did not say what was misinterperted or the fact that for some reason his statement was released through the U.S. Military's press office.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 20, 2008 10:35 AM
What I find hilarious is how, as McCain and the Republicans swirl further and further down the bowl, the right wing trolls like Rusty get dumber and dumber with their comments.
Posted by Florida | July 20, 2008 10:46 AM
Well its seems SPIEGEL sticks to its version of the conversation.(eds: full interview will be available in English on Monday). Which I'm sure the cable news network will be unable or not have the resources to locate.

"the right wing trolls like Rusty get dumber and dumber with their comments."
I can't wait to watch the Joe Scarbourghs and Pat Buchanans of cable news spin this weekend to McCain's advantage. Actually, those two could be considered sane and rational compared to the nuts they will let loose next week.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 20, 2008 10:54 AM
The Centcom retraction will get more play than Spiegel standing by it's story to be "balanced".
Everybody with a brain knows Maliki was quoted correctly and the White House put pressure for a rollback which was released through centcom.
But again, to be fair and balanced, the truth will be obscured.
Posted by trifecta | July 20, 2008 10:57 AM
GySgt213,
The spin has already started. The MSM ignored all of McCain's statements about Social Security, birth control, etc. Now they will spend the week whining about how McCain gets no coverage. That will be the big story this week. How Obama gets better press coverage.
Posted by dfh | July 20, 2008 10:59 AM
The story on Chris Mathews this morning was how Obama has changed positions and how bad this is for him and Democrats.

"Little effort will be made to find out what Maliki really said. Or the reason why it was dialed back so quickly. ... for some reason his statement was released through the U.S. Military's press office."
I think this is standard fare and probably totally innocuous - except that the White House probably complained to Maliki about giving undue advantage to Obama. That specific complaint, I'm sure, was probably in the form of an admonishment to Maliki to keep out of American politics.
I think that the only thing that was clarified was that Maliki didn't want to be seen as endorsing one candidate's plan over another.
The fact that nothing about the timetable issue was specifically corrected makes me think that Maliki hasn't changed his mind at all - and his agenda is much closer to Obama's than to Bush's.
Posted by 53_3 | July 20, 2008 11:29 AM
The desparation of Obama to show comparisons of himself and the great REPUBLICAN Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan is absolutely hillarious.
In his desparation to dis-associate himself from those who have been his primary support up until this point, Rev Jeremiah Wright the hate monger preacher of God Damn America, William Ayers the anti-American terrorist, and Tony Resko the greatest Slum Lord that Chicago has ever seen.
Now he wants America to see him as the Ronald Reagan of the Democrat Party delivering a speech in Germany. But, his aspirations were tossed out by the German Government and he is relegated to the "Victory Tower" instead of the Brandenberg Gate made so famous by Reagan.
This is such a farce, and I am sure the American people will see through all of this as political hype and opportunism.
After Germany we have only one lame attempt at grand standing from Obama when he gives his Democrat Party acceptance speech on the day that Martin Luther King delivered his I have a dream speech. Coincidence, I think not.
Just think desparation and purely seeking credibility.
John McCain would be smart to say after Obama's speech in Germany, "Senator Obama, I knew and worked with Ronald Reagan, and you are no Ronald Reagan"!!!

Rusty -
You do realize it's open to the public, and has a viewing platform near the top, and it's been in pretty much continuous use since it was built. (150 years ago)
You just wanted an excuse to talk about some evil guy.
Pathetic, and anti-American.
Posted by RubyPanther | July 20, 2008 11:34 AM
Does anybody know in what language the interview was conducted? Maliki is a fluent english speaker, and I imagine the two correspondents are as well. It would be much simpler, especially given how tricky arabic translation can be, to do the thing in English, and translate to the German for publication.

ivb: you watch CMS on a Sunday. You are a glutton for punishment. Some of the coverage in the UK and Canada suggests that Centcom's stamp of approval on the "message modification" of what Maliki said is pretty unconvincing. Out there they place more credence on Der Spiegel that on Centcom. BBC says an English text of the interview by the German magazine will be available later. Der Spiegel stands by it story.

"... instead of the Brandenberg Gate made so famous by Reagan."
Um, actually, John F. Kennedy was there.
He was just this guy, you know...

Yeah.. the dreaded Philistines. I bet if you didn't spend so much time bitterly clinging to your cheap (I'm betting) chicom gun you probably would've learned all about them at Church by now and you'd get the joke.
But I really get the sense that someone like you probably spends as much time there as they do at the office or the range. Which given all your voluble commenting here... is, sadly, not very much at all.
Posted by Interloper | July 20, 2008 11:43 AM
"Does anybody know in what language the interview was conducted?"
I don't, but I take all this this way:
His spokesman, on clarification, didn't actually correct any of Maliki's specific statements other than to make it clear Maliki didn't endorse one candidates' plan over another.
That still leaves things as they should be. He clearly stated Germany was not a good model for Iraq, and he clearly stated that a timeline for withdrawal was something he wanted.
I always felt that the headline stuff where he "endorsed" Obama's plan as spin. Either way, Maliki's position is much closer to Obama's than Bush's.
I don't think they will be able to do much more than claim the surge worked and adopt Obama's position as their own...

KT here--
53_3: Actually, the famous JFK speech was not at the Brandenburg Gate, but at City Hall. (I'm not pointing this out to be a smarty-pants. I just found this out myself recently, having always thought otherwise.) Also, it is NOT true (as I have heard several folks say in the past few days) that JFK mangled his German and was actually calling himself a jelly donut.

Was away listening to JJ's post of the Fab Four panel as an antidote to Mathews. ;)
The reason I watch is to know how far in the tank they are. Mathews gets a more general audience on this show than on Hardball, I think. I also think it's a good idea to see the narrative being written, in order to be more aware of it. I'm still ticked off that I was taken in by Colin Powell at the UN.

I stand corrected with thanks, KT!

We will know that Obama is emulating Reagan when he goes to Kolmeshöhe Cemetery near Bitburg to honor German WWII war dead, including Waffen SS.
Personally I don't think that Obama and his advisors are that dumb.
