This is Pathetic
On behalf of a plane-stuck Karen Tumulty
A few hours in Paris, all spent on tarmacs and filing rooms. We are now stuck in the plane and one of the network guys is trying to make us feel better by playing Edith Piaf on the loudspeaker of his iPod. I'm living the dream.
Meanwhile, Sarkozy all but endorsed Obama. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up the Democratic convention keynote speaker. Bruce Crumley will post a story shortly.

Not as pathetic as Mark Halperin posting what Rush Limbaugh has to say as his top story of the day. The Beltway media really have tough jobs. Read a gossip website. Listen to a drug-addled loon on the radio. Repeat what both said and call it a day.

Poor KT. We feel your pain. ALL spent on tarmacs and filing rooms? You, um, could have done that from Washington, N'est-ce pas? No nice pastries even?
Posted by KathyR | July 25, 2008 2:31 PM
Hi Karen: I think I saw you are the sarkozy-obama presser. On your right you had a fellow journo who looked like McCain and on your left a well coiffed blonde. You had a black jacket???
Relax: your kind of ordeal is pretty commpnplace here.
Take care

Hanging around Paris and listening to Edith Piaf! Sounds exotic!
I was going to say that the Page is showing questionable editorial judgment, but looks like I'm not the first one on it. Ca m'est bien egale.

Exhibits Nos. 1,000,000,000,001, 1,000,000,000,002 and 1,000,000,000,003 that Barack "Citizen of the World" Obama is the world's biggest fool:
* “As we speak, cars in Boston and factories in Beijing are melting the ice caps in the Arctic, shrinking coastlines in the Atlantic, and bringing drought to farms from Kansas to Kenya” and “This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands.”
* “This is the moment when we must renew the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.... It is time to secure all loose nuclear materials; to stop the spread of nuclear weapons; and to reduce the arsenals from another era. This is the moment to begin the work of seeking the peace of a world without nuclear weapons.”
* “Let us build on our common history, and seize our common destiny, and once again engage in that noble struggle to bring justice and peace to our world.”

I like KT, and it doesn't make me happy knowing she's suffering....the rest of the pool, not so much.
Posted by Cincinnatus | July 25, 2008 2:40 PM
Yeah, but the rest of the pool doesn't have a swampland full of commenters sending good wishes their way.

Hello Ms. Tumulty, this is ONSTAR. We've just gotten a signal that your plane is immobile, and you are unable to exit the vehicle. We are here to help. Please listen carefully, and follow our instructions exactly:
Unbuckle your seatbelt and enter the aisle, facing the forward section of the aircraft.
Proceed up the aisle, making eye contact with no one, until you reach the galley section between the 4th and 3rd coach compartments.
Enter the galley on the right; turn to face the aft section of the plane.
On your left, 3 drawers up, will be what looks like a locked compartment. It is unlocked.
Pull ope the drawer and survey its contents. Remain silent, and do not touch the contents until you are prepared to do so.
The contents of the box should look as so:
or
If you have reached the correct box, remove the contents to your open handbag.
Close the lock box, stow your purse under your arm, pour yourself a paper cup of water there oj the right, and proceed back to your seat.
Sit down, buckle your seatbelt, and enjoy.
If there is anything else we can help you with, please don't hesitate to push the ONSTAR button on your console. (ONSTAR service prices are listed in the SKY MALL magazine in the seat pocket in front of you.

Sitting stuck on the tarmac is the absolute worst. And after a long trip.
I look forward to cranky reporting.
Posted by Paul-no not that one | July 25, 2008 2:47 PM
Cookie Puss, that is not fair to Thomas Hobbes.
That was a very problematic press conference. Obama's face during Sarkozy's "endorsement" was priceless. I think Sarkozy was sincere, but he was also helping his own position in France by hurting Obama's position in America. Not very diplomatic.
I'm trying to find a French language version of the press conference that I can play on my mac, but I haven't found one yet. Sarkozy was speaking very quickly so it's perhaps his comments were not fully translated. Anyway fellow Swamplanders, please post the link if you have one.

"I wouldn't be surprised if (Sarkozy) ends up the Democratic convention keynote speaker."
Poor child.
She is feverish. She is hallucinating.
Aren't there any cold sodas left in France? Damn those French!
Come back quick, KT!

Leave em there BO...if it was meant to be, they'll find their way home!
Posted by Cincinnatus | July 25, 2008 2:57 PM
Now that Ms. Tumulty is headed back to the United States, will she be the first person from Time magazine to mention that a criminal complaint has now been filed regarding John Edwards' confrontation at 2:40 a.m. on July 22, 2008 at the Beverly Hilton following his secret meeting with his ho and his love child? See nationalenquirer.com for the details. Enjoy.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up the Democratic convention keynote speaker. Bruce Crumley will post a story shortly".
And the liberal media strikes again! But, a conservative French President is on par with someone like Obama, so not so surprising in the least
Posted by Rustydog | July 25, 2008 2:58 PM
Rose: The Post has the conference on tape with Sarkozy speaking in French and the French reporters asking questions in French. Christiane Amanpour's question (in English) was very embarrassing.
Posted by Pat | July 25, 2008 2:58 PM
I believe texte just cited the National Enquirer as a credible source . . . how does that make YOU feel, Time Edit-ing Powers-that-Be?
Are we in some kind of parallel dimension, where the average IQ drops 10 points?
Posted by Realpolitiko | July 25, 2008 3:08 PM
"Are we in some kind of parallel dimension, where the average IQ drops 10 points?"
Nope. We're in America....where the average IQ drops 10 points.
Posted by Cincinnatus | July 25, 2008 3:09 PM
Oh, and I'll interpret Rusty's "someone like Obama" comparison to mean "President-like" . . . in which case, I agree with him. Glad he finally got on board with, you know . . . reality.
Posted by Realpolitiko | July 25, 2008 3:10 PM
If "The Page" is going to post Limbaugh's trashing of Obama as news, they should post Air America's commentary about McCain as news.
Posted by freerider | July 25, 2008 3:33 PM
Pat, I could only find the English transcript but it seems consistent with the live translation. It is pretty extreme...
And I liked Amanpour's question! It needed to be asked. She's not a diplomat, she doesn't have to make things go smoothly. Ironically if Obama were French he probably wouldn't be a successful politician there. Although to be fair that's a pretty universal trait. We're all more supportive of other people's efforts to break down barriers...

Actually, isn't Karen on her way to London and not home? Alas.
Bonne chance Karen.

Rose: I heard the conference via the Post and it was conducted in French, with Obama speaking in English and US reporters asking the questions in English. I am not tech savvy but if I find a route to the original French text I will post it. Need my son to help me out.
Posted by Pat | July 25, 2008 3:59 PM
I'm surprised no one has said this but,
IT DEPENDS UPON WHAT YOUR DEFINITION OF SURGE IS!!! :-)
McCain and his band of war-monkeys are pathetic.
Posted by Bryan from Houston | July 25, 2008 4:37 PM
Pat, I found some video of the press conference. It's actually good for Obama that most voters don't speak French because it's worse when you hear Sarkozy's tone of voice.
Posted by Rose | July 25, 2008 6:44 PM
Clearly this was very problematic Rose. I haven't seen it yet so would you say this is worse than when Obama successfully made a basketball shot which I know you were concerned about?
