More Obama Trip News
The campaign held a midday conference call to fill in a few more details about the upcoming trip.
One bit of not-entirely-surprising news: No Brandenburg Gate. Obama aide Denis McDonough said the candidate felt that it would be "too presumptuous" to give the only major address of the trip from the spot where Ronald Reagan had so famously called for Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. Spokesman Robert Gibbs brushed back a suggestion that this event would be a campaign rally, saying the speech will be a substantive one about the state of European-American relations. So where will it be? They are still not saying, insisting that a number of sites are under consideration.
Adviser Susan Rice, steering around another touchy issue, noted: "It is not our intent to make policy or negotiate. ... There is only one President of the United States at any one given time, and we will certainly honor and respect that." The advisers insisted that this is not a "political trip" (at least, as they choose to define it) and said that a number of substantive issues will be discussed. Among them: non-proliferation; counterterrorism; energy security; climate change and regional security.
The campaign also provided a fuller list than we have seen to date of the foreign leaders with whom Obama will be meeting. They include: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Conservative Party Leader David Cameron; German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier; French President Nicolas Sarkozy. In Israel, he will meet with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu. And in Ramallah, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salaam Fayad.

Everyone else gets to fly into Iraqi in secret meaning, we don't know they are there until much later. Thanks Senator McCain.
"The Obama campaign has tried to cloak the Illinois senator's trip in some measure of secrecy for security reasons. The White House, State Department and Pentagon do not announce senior officials' visits to Iraq in advance."

But in a statement, the White House said Mr. Bush and Mr. Maliki had agreed “that improving conditions should allow for the agreements now under negotiation to include a general time horizon for meeting aspirational goals— such as the resumption of Iraqi security control in their cities and provinces and the further reduction of U.S. combat forces from Iraq.”

's Bethany Thomas, who's traveling with the McCain campaign, reports that McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace came to the back of the plane to brief reporters on this "time horizon" news: "Conditions-based withdrawal has always been something Sen. McCain has supported. And the conditions are only something that we can talk about being met because of the success of the surge. Now that the surge has succeeded in Iraq, we can actually talk more ... about this asprational conditions phase."
As I said on the last thread, I find this new coinage of the word "aspirational" to be intriguing.
I'm taking it as sysnonymous with "in your dreams" which is to say, by referring to the US withdrawal as 'aspirational' they are flat out stating "it ain't gonna happen"

Another interpretation is that Bush is saying: 'I failed to achieve my goals.'
Bush failed to coerce the Iraqis into signing away their sovereignty to the American military. Bush failed to force the Iraqis into signing sweetheart deals to Western oil companies. Bush failed to keep the Maliki government away from the Iranian government.
Bush is a failure in even his own terms. I see no reason to think that McCain can bring any sort of new thinking to these issues or that he would be competent enough to bring them to fruition. Perhaps somebody could ask him how he intends to solve these difficult, complex diplomatic problems.

McCain is probably guessing here. But for a man who has and continues to be proped up by the media and soley by the media as some one with extensive knowledge in foreign/military affairs and how sensitive he supposely is about friggin time lines this is beyond a VERY STUPID thing to say in public. Its OPSEC 101.
Whether you care about Obama's safety or not you are not only putting him at risk you are putting the very security that is supposed to protect him at risk. You don't attempt to pin point a day and time. Ever.

McCain isn't the only one who has done it either. I think Limbaugh mentioned today that Obama will be in Iraq before the weekend is over. Wingnuts play a game with national security called heads I win, tails you lose.
They take credit for good outcomes and blame someone else for poor ones. That's why, when the war was going poorly in Iraq, it was the dirty f&*king hippies fault. Now that things have stabilized, they can't take credit fast enough.

Exhibit No. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,001 that Susan Rice is one dim bulb. "It is not our intent to make policy or negotiate." Thank you, Susan Rice. Had Rice not said that, I would have thought some irrelevant United States senator could "make policy or negotiate" with foreign governments. After "bewildered" Merkel, ususally on the receiving end of Dubyas back rubs, denied Obama the location he can return next year as President and give a speech at that darn gate. Steinmeier will be the SPDs candidate for the german general elections already then, and Merkel will smirk anyway.
