McCain's (to No) Avail
Yes, the McCain folks seemed to have canceled a press availability today, at a time when McCain would probably get some questions about things he doesn't want to talk about. To be fair -- or perhaps to put it in context -- McCain generally will do several avails a day, Obama just one or two a week, if that. And when Ambinder (rightly) points out that the national press "ask qualitatively different questions" than local press, that doesn't mean that the national press's questions are of better quality. The national press is obsessed with process and meta-narrative and catching the candidate in a flip/flop/contradiction/gaffe. The local press do, honest to God, ask about actual issues and policy. Not issues and policy that you or I might care about (they tend to be HYPER-local; water filtration plant placement and such), but they do. Both sets of reporters are capable of asking something dumb.

And you, Ana, seem to be *only* capable of posting something dumb. You must be pretty exhausted constantly trying to prop up McCain and his embarrassingly inept and petty campaign. Good luck with that!

I would like to fill the McCain Availability Gap by announcing to the people of America that I will be having Subway for lunch.
Any questions?

AMC,
Thanks for following up on my question and the context.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 23, 2008 1:43 PM
AMC can justify McCain's cancellation of a press availability a hundred ways to Sunday, but it's still pretty lame to whine and complain about a lack of press coverage-they even made lame press badges to emphasize the point-and then cancel his press availability. Especially after John McForeign-policy-genius once again misrepresented what has happened in Iraq.
Posted by jbentley4 | July 23, 2008 1:44 PM
C'mon AMC, the ribs weren't that good, were they?
He was going to get hammered on his misrepresentation of the Anbar Awakening and he just outright ducked the avail until they can come up with something to explain his mistake.
It's pretty simple, let's not over analyze it.
Posted by The Other Ed | July 23, 2008 1:47 PM
So after yesterday's whining about lack of press coverage McCain...cancels today's press availability. *rimshot*
A self-respecting press would make that the lede, with a healthy dash of sarcastic derision ... followed by detailed look at the questions he's ducking.

...which leaves the questions about "issues and policy that you or I might care about" unasked. This might be the problem.

So no BBQ today?
Posted by Florida | July 23, 2008 1:49 PM
So, one sentence on McCain altering his schedule to duck questions on his gaffes and five sentences of dissembling excuses for McCain.
Par for the course.
Posted by Merle | July 23, 2008 1:50 PM
I wondering if there isn't more than meets the eye so to speak, to this. McCain has been getting hammered since Friday, starting with the rejection of his article/essay by the NYT. It most certainly not a normal week and it certainly is not a good time to not be out pressing his case.
So, I'm wondering if there is some brain storming going on in his camp to come up with something big. Or if they are trying to let him settle down a bit so he does'nt just completely lose it.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 23, 2008 1:51 PM
A Veep announcement would draw a lot of attention.
Posted by another david | July 23, 2008 1:58 PM
I do have to say that Robert Novak is going above and beyond the call of duty in order to divert media attention today. Too bad about that pedestrian but then collateral damage is always to be expected.

AMC, when McCain does get back to you, can you ask him how CBS's altering of their interview with him to cast him in a more positive light proves that the press is against him? I mean, they edited that video so he would sound kind of coherent rather than show the answer he actually gave. That sounds a tad unethical.
Posted by Florida | July 23, 2008 2:02 PM
While a VP announcement might draw a lot of attention, this seems to be the wrong time to play that card. First, while doing so would certainly draw some attention from Obama, the fact remains that Obama is going to continue drawing a great deal of coverage for the remainder or the week. McCain would only be cutting into the coverage his VP announcement could eventually receive later on. Second, I think a fair few pundits (and maybe even a few voters!) might not see a sudden VP announcement as a rather desperate ploy to steal some attention back and thus openly call him on it.
Posted by MapGuy | July 23, 2008 2:04 PM
AMC, that's an interesting perspective on the differences and similarities between national and local media.
"I wondering if there isn't more than meets the eye so to speak, to this. McCain has been getting hammered since Friday, starting with the rejection of his article/essay by the NYT. It most certainly not a normal week and it certainly is not a good time to not be out pressing his case." - GySgt213, I think McCain's happy to let the Republican paid advertising make his case for him. Their core message is "Obama's scary! And his loyalties are not to America," and McCain can only go so far in advancing that narrative himself. All he can do is try not to make gaffes. Which is apparently very difficult.
Posted by Rose | July 23, 2008 2:05 PM
err, that should be "might now see a sudden ..."
Posted by MapGuy | July 23, 2008 2:05 PM
Rose, I agree with you. There are a couple of things backfiring on McCain right now, and I see this entire "the media loves Obama" tack as being a pretty significant one. If/when media attention is diverted from the "referendum on Obama" storyline to the "what is McCain saying now" storyline, things may start to go downhill for him. Laying low may not be such a bad idea right now.

Ana did I Pi$$ off some Libyan with my youtube posting of Quaddifi in some earlier posts? Could you have this translated so I can see if he is calling me names or something like the rest of the quacks on here?

Good God, how pathetic. You see something written in a language you don't understand, and you are afraid it's somebody calling you names.
Try this, tough guy: copy, http://translate.google.com, paste, select Arabic to English.
Your English skills could use some work too: look up the meaning of "quack."

Florida,
This really bugging me. This was not an edit where they shorten his response into a sort of summary for time. They subsituted a completely different answer to the question being asked and now are standing by it.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 23, 2008 2:25 PM
Aww, c'mon, AMC.
McCain's new campaign manager may just be figuring out that the more McCain talks, the stupider he looks. Giuliani-esque, almost. Though with Rudy it's probably safer to say the more he talked the less people liked him.
What does Obama's press availability have to do with McCain ducking some tough questions after whining about a lack of attention for a week?

"Both sets of reporters are capable of asking something dumb."
No doubt, AMC, but it remains to be seen whether either set is willing and able to ask McCain anything smart.

Another McCain error--
Ambinder has posted the transcript of the McCain/Couric interview. In the interview, McCain made this statement:
don't know if you caught this one yet, but if you check Ambinder's posted transcript of Couric's interview last night, McCain said this;
Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others.
That incorrect.
This is the correct detailed facts from blogger "Equation Doc" at Kos. He includes the links so you can verify these facts for yourself.
The colonel was Colonel Sean McFarland, the head of 1st Brigade, 1st Division. They were redeployed to Iraq in January, 2006, in Nineveh province. In May, 2006 they were transferred south to Ramadi, in Al Anbar province, the site of the "Anbar Awakening." The 1st Brigade, 1st Division was redeployed out of Iraq in mid-February, 2007.
That is, the unit McCain is referring to left Iraq approximately one month after Bush announced the surge on January 10, 2007 (troop surge timeline). A month later, on March 20, troop strength was up from 132,000 (in January) to 152,000. Additional commitments to the surge would eventually bring the total to 168,000, in September, 2007.
The Anbar Awakening, or Anbar Salvation Council, was founded by Sheik Abdul Sattar Buzaigh al-Rishawi in September, 2006, again, long before Bush's January 10, 2007 announcement of the surge. And ironically, at the same time troop surge levels peaked and US casualties were in the process of declining, al-Rishawi was killed in September, 2007 by a roadside bomb in Ramadi. [emphasis mine]

Hey, where can I find an unedited video of that McCain interview? I looked around last night but didn't see anything noteworthy.
Posted by Cliff | July 23, 2008 2:44 PM
True, Obama only has a couple of press avails a week, but he works on weekends. McCain doesn't. context.
In fact, McCain is largely campaigning by press, so of course he's annoyed when something interferes with his usual control of the press message.
Posted by KathyR | July 23, 2008 2:45 PM
According to KO last night, CBS stuffed the tape down a memory-hole but a transcript survives.
Posted by FriarTuck | July 23, 2008 2:47 PM
GySgt: " McCain has been getting hammered since Friday, starting with the rejection of his article/essay by the NYT. It most certainly not a normal week and it certainly is not a good time to not be out pressing his case."
Unfortunately, he's had a good week in the polls though. Actually ahead in Ohio now in some polls, and Ohio is the one essential for both of them.
Posted by KathyR | July 23, 2008 2:49 PM
Kathy,
That may be starting to turn and I sure you know it some times does not take much for a campaign to turn south. Obama is showing slight leads in VA and FL as of today.
Posted by GySgt213 | July 23, 2008 2:52 PM
GySgt: Oh good, I hadn't picked that up yet. I know that Silver, who had Obama projected at 320 a couple of weeks ago now has him projected with 288ev.
Posted by KathyR | July 23, 2008 3:03 PM
When a news organization buries the part of an interview that is likely to garner the most controversy/ratings/exposure you know something really dirty is going on.
I wonder if McCain will call in sick whenever things get tough in the GWOT?
Posted by Cincinnatus | July 23, 2008 3:14 PM
It might be interesting to see how the candidates respond to local issues they probably know little about (water filtration?)-- how fast they think on their feet.
Well, I think that'll be a slam dunk for one candidate.
Posted by Freida | July 23, 2008 4:47 PM
AMC--
When KT was traveling with him, he wasn't two or three a day, nor when MS was with him. More like 1 or 2 a week. Are you sure that this is still true? And it's worth noting that the campaign says you have to earn your into the presence now. Isn't the story here that the open access policy is being gradually reversed?

Perhaps Ana, the next time you're in a press conference with Senator McCain, you can ask him to reconcile these two statements:
1. [From the Katie Couric/CBS interview this week]
Couric: You have said, quote, “I know how to win wars.” Which war, Sen. McCain, are you referring to?
McCain: Bosnia. Kosovo. First Gulf War. The conflict in Iraq. To name a few. I’ve been engaged in every single one of them, and in a decision-making process as one of the senior members of the Armed Services Committee.
2. McCain on Bosnia: April 23, 1993
“If we find ourselves involved in a conflict in which American casualties mount, in which there is no end in sight, in which we take sides in a foreign civil war, in which American fighting men and women have great difficulty distinguishing between friend and foe, then I suggest that American support for military involvement would rapidly evaporate.”
Posted by Rapid Eddie | July 23, 2008 7:26 PM
Since the assertion has been made, I would like to know the following:
Exactly how many avails has Mccain had, on average, each week in the past month?
I can't stand unvalidated assertions. Especially from someone who is proving to be nothing but a tool and apologist for a particular candidate. At least admit it, AMC. Stop pretending.
