Twit v. Twit v. Twit
Perhaps I mean "Tweet." In any case, representatives from the Obama and McCain campaign have agreed to participate in a little experiment in micro-politics over the weekend, taking part in a "Twitter Debate," focusing on tech policy, as a preamble to this year's Personal Democracy Forum conference in New York. If you want to play along, sign up at twitter to follow the three of us: @mikenelson (representing Obama), @lizmair (representing McCain) and @anamariecox (representing me). We'll also be marking our posts with #pdfdebate, and you can catch up with the whole thing easily here at Summize.
Details to be found here. And, yes, this is the kind of thing I do with my weekends normally.

The content-free posts at the summize link aren't exactly a good start (e.g., "wedding time! pumped for #pdfdebate starting tonight!").
The other problem with such formats is that I don't trust the gatekeeper, whether AMC or anyone else in the MSM. With tech subjects it doesn't much matter since everyone's probably pretty much in agreement.
However, with subjects like immigration, anyone from the MSM is going to rule out questions like these for Obama. No one from the BHO campaign could get out of a fair debate about that issue unscathed, so don't expect that to be twittered or, if it is, expect the moderator to be in the tank.

Completely off topic, but do you know when Obama's May fundraising numbers are going to come out? Today is the filing deadline and I thought we would see them by now (5:30 pm ET)

Free advertising for Twitter? I have to sign up to participate?
Epic fail, as we tech-savvy people say.
Let them come on IRC and debate there.

Hold on here a minute. Now, I'm old - not as old as McCain, but old enough. I've been "on the net" since the late 70s, on usenet since the early 80s, did chats on Compuserve since '86, AOL since the mid-90s and then things exploded and now I'm just confused. I feel *so* un-hip.
But what's "twitter"? And why is it better at social interactions than all the other things that have gone before?
Please, will someone explain?
Thanks. Now get off my lawn!!

This truly is a web-fueled campaign. I'd love to see more of this.

Ralph: Twitter is f--king retarded.
It's a little gewgaw you stick on your webpage. It's a box that says, "What I am doing now:"
And then AMC or whoever posts little messages on it from wherever she's at, like "I have a headache," or "I need a drink," or "Karl Rove has dreamy eyes."
Nothing, you know, important, because nobody on the Internet has the attention span to read important things anymore.
Posted by Cliff | June 20, 2008 8:03 PM
This is kind of amusing in a total train-wreck way.
Barack's guy is just talking BS, he's obviously the typical marketing guy who can only recite pre-fab info, and in this case the info is only vaguely related to the topic.
"Barack has done an amazing job of reaching out to 100's of leaders of the tech and IT sector and used the good advice he's heard."
Used it to do what exactly? Do tell!
Jesus, how can you get owned in an internet debate by a representative of a candidate who doesn't know how to operate a toaster oven?

Cliff - OK. But that's a criticism of the content, not of the medium. Unless there's something in the medium that ensures the content will always be inane.
Or maybe it's something endemic to the kind of people who are twitter fans?
Is there anything in the medium that suggests the contents will be more trivial than, say, a boggingheads tv episode?
Posted by Ralph | June 20, 2008 8:23 PM
So I signed onto the twitter and tried to get this, but it's still blinking 12:00. Sigh. I'm old.
Posted by Ralph | June 20, 2008 8:33 PM
Ralph - Good point, I failed to elaborate on the medium.
Twitter has an upper character limit, so users are limited to short bursts of information.
So if AMC were some sort of elite guerilla blogger, going behind the lines and investigating, she could send little coded bursts of information.
But in actual practice, I've only ever seen it used for things like my examples above.
A twitter debate may be illuminating, but I am scornful of the medium and dismissing it off hand.
Posted by Cliff | June 20, 2008 8:47 PM
Looked at the wrap on #pdfdebate. Tough to follow. I can't imagine how it would have been in real time. Typing pretty much sucks for an interview or debate medium. Because it's "in print" you might expect it to have more content and more thought behind it than it actually has. If this were a video conference instead, at least when you're talking extemporaneously, you look like it.
As for dismissing it off hand, I think this is just good sense. :-)
It's just another way of saying "Get Off My Lawn!" Sometimes terse is better. :-)

Off topic but hysterical..New Gallup poll..Democrat controlled congress with 12% approval rating. At least the president is double that...I love coming to this site and seeing the liberal lovefest posters congratulating eachother on their posts, as if anyone else is reading except for the other 20 libloon posters reading the posts..and then you have an occasional poster like Jackaroyd who thinks he is very intelligent by posting things from DailyKos of all places..and expects to be taken seriously.
Posted by jimmyjamz | June 20, 2008 9:33 PM
jimmy you just don't get it.
It's *because* the Democratic-controlled Congress is capitulating to Bush on the war, on FISA, on presidential powers, on taking impeachment off the table, etc, etc that Congress's approval rating is so low.
Bush at least has the 25% "true believers" who will follow anyone with an "R" after their name.
The Democrats don't have that. It's the Kos Kidz who are becoming the "center", and they're PISSED at the capitulation.
It's your worst nightmare. :-)

Holy Sheepsh^^
It would be nice if when encountering coverage of the issue in Time if the first sentence out of the gate weren't a grotesque bile-encrusted lie.
The right is unhappy at concessions made to protect civil liberties; the left is furious that the Democrats allowed the domestic spying powers to be extended in any form.
No wonder everyones so confused. No one in the village even understands why people are pissed.

That article is damn creepy, Paul Dirks. Why were the FISA amendments, such as in 1998 and under the Patriot Act, insufficient? Well, why would anyone expect a TIME reporter to figure that sort of thing out? Just throw "1978" out there, and consider your work done.
I usually attribute that sort of thing to reporter laziness, but this article is just so over the top, you have to wonder if he's paid off or engaging in satire.

As for the Dem Congress' approval rating, when have the people ever rated Congress highly? Besides, one can be unhappy at the performance of Congress as a whole and still approve your particular representative.

Sorry for the off the subject remarks, no real good post to add any relevant comments. I just wanted to touch on health care and the words liberal and socialism. Obviously the word liberal has become a bad thing, even though dictionary definitions define the word as open minded and forward thingking. Two qualities I am glad I have. Now being liberal does nothing to affect my opionion on government spending and high taxes. There is nothing forward thinking about raising taxes to fund ineficient government programs. In my opionion being open minded and forward thinking is a social issue that describes tollerence for other peoples ideas, allong with not exepting the fact that we have all the answers right now. Health care is a huge example. Are country is the ONLY industrialized nation in the world that doesn't ensure health care to all its people. To me, maybe its forward thinking, I believe health care is a fundamental human right in the our time. We have the technology and resources to ensure the quality and longevity of our society. The united states spends more per capita on health care than any industrialized nation, yet over 40 million people don't have health insurance. This sounds like an efficiency issue. Given the current budget on health care an efficient government would be able to afford insurance for all its people. This is what we shold demand. And why health care has brought feer of socialism, I don't know. Socialism is not a bad thing, (if you think it is please tell me why)The fundimental idea in a socialist government is that goverernment aims at securing all citizens the right to the equal satisfaction of vital needs. This is not mutually exclusive to democracy or free market capitalism. For everyone that loves our way of life, you have to remember in a competetive society there are winners and loosers. The difference between loosing in a socialist society vs. our current one, is how far you can fall. By providing the equal rights when it comes to vital needs you can only fall to a point were all your vital needs are met. In our society you can find yourself falling to the point of haveing no where to live, to eat, and get well. A place no human should fall. And statisticly in exclusive free market societies this is garanteed. This is because with out governtmental support all spectrums of life will exist. That is the ultra rich, ultra poor, and everything in between. I just feel if we truelly love our country shouldn't we ensure our citizens never suffer without vital needs.

Okay, so.
I checked out the Great Twitter Debate. (I realize it isn't quite over at this point.) So what kind of value added, do you think, Cox, was accomplished here? Is there anything there that would inform voters on their choices in November? Any breaking news that a voter could take away from this new and innovative enterprise?
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the material at experiment's end, Cox.
Posted by James, Los Angeles | June 21, 2008 6:32 PM
You may have contributed to the deliquency of this here pol junkie. The haiku quality of the tweets is certainly an interesting take on the future of communication.
But AMC, will you be contributing an edition article critiquing the two party's "electronic" presence and their dutifully twittering spokesTweets?
I personally found LizMair aloof and her tweets laced with talking points. MikeNelson seemed (if possible) overly wonky, but also a bit too eager.
I can't wait to see your conclusions.
Posted by Kevbo | June 22, 2008 12:19 PM
I really really want to see how Cox is going to spin the Net Neutrality part of that Twitter debate. Remember Net Neutrality, guys? Yeah we thought we were safe, but not with McCain.
Apparently McCain wants to put Carly Fiorina in charge of the FCC. And he spins anti-Net Neutrality, apparently, as being against "government regulation." Typical Republican bait and switch. Cox is trying to help Lizair say the right thing wrt Net Neutrality, but she isn't getting it. "See JSM's answer: http://tinyurl.com/2vonlw --best to be cautious about gov't interference w/ and reg of Internet" Says that "JSM says he'd like to keep an eye on what goes on w/Internet in terms of unfair advantage, etc." but "anticipating a prob that so far hasn't arisen in signif. way" Does Lizair know what Net Neutrality IS?
Evidently not: Lizair sez:
But note JSM pledge to seek perm. ban on internet taxes & track record of leadership on keeping net free of taxes
What I've said previously being noted, JSM favors market-based approach except where gov't intervention abs. nec
Are u saying Obama supports dereg of any kind? Can't find pledge to deregulate anything on his site. Pls point out
Does. Not. Understand. the issue.
Mike Nelson sez that Obama is unequivocally in favor of Net Neutrality. "Re: Net Neutrality. Barack has set clear goal of NN and an open Internet: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/"
The Obama link goes back to an unequivocal statement:
Not that any of the Bozos on the Bus are going to tell you that.
Posted by James, Los Angeles | June 22, 2008 4:16 PM
That link to the McCain interview goes to this:
McCain is definitely AGAINST Net Neutrality. No question about it. He is, even if unknowingly, in the pockets of the telecoms on this issue.
As I said, I don't think he or Lizair understands the issue. Read that whole interview for yourself: McCain Embarrassed by Yahoo’s Actions in China; Also Calls Google To The Mat The NN part is down a ways in the interview.

///
Google's "Guide to Net Neutrality": "Network neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet. The Internet has operated according to this neutrality principle since its earliest days... Fundamentally, net neutrality is about equal access to the Internet. In our view, the broadband carriers should not be permitted to use their market power to discriminate against competing applications or content. Just as telephone companies are not permitted to tell consumers who they can call or what they can say, broadband carriers should not be allowed to use their market power to control activity online."

Posted by James, Los Angeles | June 22, 2008 4:35 PM
McCain is evidently in favor of auctioning off the internet tubes to the highest broadband bidder and allow them to discriminate against competing applications and contents. The winning internet tube bidder will then decide what is "quality" content and what is not, and will charge more for "quality" content. So they might decide that Swampland is "quality" content and charge you and me to access it. (Go ahead, laugh.)
But see, you think it is preposterous. But think about cable. Cable is not "neutral." Cable capability was auctioned off the the highest bidder. Are you happy with your Cable company? I'm not. And you get layered service, right? You pay a lot for "premium" channels, but all those Jimmy Swaggert shows you get for the "basic" price. AND you have to deal with a Comcast or Time Warner monolith.
Is that what you want for your internet tubes? A Cable model? Or do you want it to stay "neutral" with respect to content? That's what we are talking about here.
John McCain prefers the Time Warner cable model. Obama is committed to maintaining "neutrality" with respect to content.
That's what the issue is all about.
Posted by James, Los Angeles | June 22, 2008 4:47 PM
See, here's what McCain doesn't get. He sez
"anticipating a prob that so far hasn't arisen in signif. way"
Well, helloooooo. It hasn't arisen because -- wait for it! -- we have Net Neutrality right now! The telecoms don't *own* the internet tubes! THAT's why the problem "hasn't arisen in signif. way" !!!
See, the telecoms want to CHANGE that. They Do. Not. Want. the NN that we have *now.* Get it?
And Lizair and McCain sez we "shouldn’t be trying to micromanage American business and innovation." Which is a telecom talking point in favor of auctioning off the internet tubes to the highest bidder, so they can charge Showtime prices for Swampland access. (heh!)
It has nothing whatever to do with "keeping the 'net free of taxes." How lame can you get?
The Barbecue Journos don't seem to want to understand the issue either.
But Cox. Good on you for asking the question in this forum. You are excused from the Barbecue Journo jacket in my book.

Good great Goddess, this was an empty exercise. I felt like I was watching campaign officials fax piles of hastily-scrawled Post-It's back and forth all weekend, with long long long pauses in between. None of the immediacy of txt, none of the coherence of blogging, and none of the dynamism of debate.
I mean, it's easy for someone to sit on the sidelines of anything and hurl criticisms... but did anyone get anything out of this? Even you, Ana?
