Trying to Figure Out Who Mugabe Is in This Analogy
“We’re seeing that right now in Zimbabwe," Clinton explained. "Tragically, an election was held, the president lost, they refused to abide by the will of the people,” Clinton told the crowd of senior citizens at a retirement community in south Florida.

HC - "I think people across Florida and Michigan are thinking to themselves, ‘Well if the Democrats don’t want my vote, maybe John McCain and the Republicans do?’ We can’t let that happen,” she told the small crowd."
I wonder how they like being called idiots? Does she really think people make their vote selections based on spite?
I like the "small crowd" part though.
Worst of all, its almost like she's telling "her" supporters in those states that voting for McCain would be a reasonable thing to do. Something she really couldn't find an argument for.
Wow...

The biggest shame is that she's implying that it was somehow the Obama campaign which unseated the MI and FL delegations. He had nothing to do with it.
With this overheated rhetoric, Clinton is being very uncareful with the her own Party's electoral picture in November.

Bobby Mugabe is Harold Ickes – the August, 2007 version of Ickes who voted to strip Florida and Michigan of their delegates, back when it didn't matter to his boss.

From John Cole:
It's sad to see. Or, it would be only sad, if it were merely the self-immolation of a once-respected figure. But her campaign's disregard for the impact of these dishonest claims on Obama's chances against McCain make it dangerous and infuriating.

This is a good comment: "There’s no such thing as Hillary supporters at this point. There’s McCain enablers and Democrats. I’m a Democrat so I support our nominee, Barack Obama."
(Yes, in the abstract, someone could continue a race against a surefire nominee, a la Huckabee. But that's not the kind of campaign Clinton is running).

Given his abysmal showing in Kentucky, it is now time for Obama to step aside and concede the nomination to Hillary Rodham Clinton. He should immediately stop dividing our party and should immediately stop his attempt to disenfranchise Democrats in Florida and Michigan. He can't win the general election given the fact that his three dearest friends are virulent militants like his wife, Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers.

The sheer, almost transcendent cynicism of her line of argument--before an audience of doddering, confused old retirement home residents, at that--is deeply offensive. She not only does not deserve the nomination, she should be primaried when she is up for re-election as a Senator. As a New York resident, I believe I will start looking into that possibility right now.

My comment has to do with Sen. Obama and his Change message, which has seemed to get a little lost lately. At least, that's what this avid political junkie thinks. As a Senator from Illinios, wouldn't it make sense for him to stand up against this farm bill because of all the pork attached to it and how pork isn't "change we can believe in" nor change period? Is he mentioning the farm bill on the trail? FYI--I'm a HUGE Obama supporter!
Thanks for all your work, TIME!
I am a complete new commentator to Swampland, though I've been an obsessive-compusive reader of it since last fall. Not sure what took me so long to finally give in and start commenting but I'm glad I did because I truly appriciate the dialouge the insightful TIME reporters provide us with...plus the ledes on good articles and the gossip behind them are fascinating (I say this as a former journalist!)

We have now left silly season for the stark raving mad season. Who on earth does she think her constituency is for this? That there is so little attention being paid to this just shows how pathetic she is now as a candidate. Cmon, comparing the Democratic party to Zimbabwe? That's going to win over the superdelegates. This is embarrassing.
Um, obviously, it's herself who's Mugabe. Bad analogy Hillary. You're the one who won't accept the results and step down.

What do I dislike about Hillary besides the dynasty issue? The dishonesty. She was willing to go along with the rules in the beginning. Terry McAulliffe was a part of it!
So for her to go on in this way now is dishonest and disingenuous. I personally thought the party was out of line from the beginning on this issue but Clinton has done a huge flip-flop and, oh yes, she's trying to manipulate everything in her favor.
Why would anyone want her to be their VP. Do you think she's suddenly going to stop being dishonest and manipulative?
From Terry McAuliffe's book:
"I'm going outside the primary window," [Michigan Sen. Carl Levin] told me definitively.
"If I allow you to do that, the whole system collapses," I said. "We will have chaos. I let you make your case to the DNC, and we voted unanimously and you lost."
He kept insisting that they were going to move up Michigan on their own, even though if they did that, they would lose half their delegates. By that point Carl and I were leaning toward each other over a table in the middle of the room, shouting and dropping the occasional expletive.
"You won't deny us seats at the convention," he said.
"Carl, take it to the bank," I said. "They will not get a credential. The closest they'll get to Boston will be watching it on television. I will not let you break this entire nominating process for one state. The rules are the rules. If you want to call my bluff, Carl, you go ahead and do it."
We glared at each other some more, but there was nothing much left to say. I was holding all the cards and Levin knew it.

Amen. Has she just completely lost her mind? Has she picked up a drug habit? Does she realize if she wins with this rhetoric, she's going to face exactly the same problem Obama now faces, with 1/4 to 1/3 of the party ready to back McCain over her?

How could we not have seen this earlier??? Florida is exactly like Zimbabwe - just look and see!
Official Language -
Florida: English
Zimbabwe: English
Independence -
Florida (as part of the US): From the UK
Zimbabwe: From the UK
Population -
Florida: 15,982,378
Zimbabwe: 13,010,000
(pretty close, huh!)
Legislative Bodies -
Florida: House and Senate
Zimbabwe: House and Senate
Executive -
Florida: Charlie Crist
Zimbabwe: Robert Mugabe
(Both have 12 letters in their names!)
Voting Record -
Florida: Decided to move up their primary and were ruled ineligible to participate in a PRIMARY for ONE political party.
Zimbabwe:
"The government of Zimbabwe violates the rights to shelter, food, freedom of movement and residence, freedom of assembly and the protection of the law. There are assaults on the media, the political opposition, civil society activists, and human rights defenders.
Opposition gatherings are frequently the subject of brutal attacks by the police force, such as the crackdown on a March 11, 2007 Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) rally. In the events, party leader Morgan Tsvangirai and 49 other opposition activists were arrested and severely beaten by the police. After his release, Morgan Tsvangirai told the BBC that he suffered head injuries and blows to the arms, knees and back, and that he lost a significant amount of blood.
The Zimbabwean government suppresses freedom of the press and freedom of speech. Newspapers critical of the government, such as the Daily News, closed after bombs exploded at their offices and the government refused to renew their license."
SEE, Zimbabwe and Florida are exactly the same! Good analogy, Hillary! Keep fightin'!!!

I just don't get this conversation about Florida & Michigan (aside from the candidates' desperate need for those delegates). I live in Colorado, and back in December, even I understood that Florida & Michigan were trying to score advertising revenue & national attention by holding their elections early. The punishment was clear back then: "If you hold it early, your delegates won't count." They didn't budge, and now its such a big deal about what do we do? I don't care how close the race is, if the party makes rules for its process to choose a nominee, then stick to your rules. If not, then what will stop other states from not following party rules in 2012?
That said, I do think this nomination process is a broken, antiquated system that needs to change. Just don't change it mid-stream when the results can have such an affect.

Saybo - don't you suppose that she wants to claim victory when the delegations are seated, after May 31, as virtually everyone has said they will be? She'll ignore the fact that they're not going to be allowed to decide the nomination and won't be given the full number of delegates, and will bow out after proclaiming that she made the party do this. After all, she keeps saying she's going to keep going "until" the Florida and Michigan votes "count."

In regards to the Florida delegate issue. I am a Floridian. I voted in the primary, but knew damn well it didn’t count for anything. At the time I was so impressed with Barack Obama that I wanted to at least vote for him because I was intrigued with his message and wanted to at least recognize the need for a more civil discourse in American politics and governance. I know tons of people who did not even bother to vote because everyone including Hillary said it didn’t matter.
Now for all you people throughout the country listen up … there is NO, I repeat NO outrage in Florida about the voting not counting- except from non-resident Hillary supporters and a few elected Hillary supporters. It is manufactured dog poo, being propagandized by a woman who has run out of options and a media who is needs to manufacture a story to keep up ratings. Without this story lots of media and party talking heads are spending May and June trying to figure out if they can write a book to make some money.
As far as I am concerned Hillary has become a tool of the right wing media and the Republican Party. With Lanny Davis the other day apparently auditioning for a slot with Fox News after the campaign and Hillary’s multiple interviews with right wing pundits it is apparent she’d make friends with the Devil if it would help her get the nomination. Whoring yourself out is never a pleasant public spectacle whether you are Lanny Davis, Terry McAuliffe or the candidate herself.
As far as stopping this soap opera, I now say let it go all the way to the convention. Go ahead Hillary and destroy the Party!!! Help John McCain become President. Watch as women lose abortion rights, we start more wars, gasoline prices rise to $10 or even $12 dollars a gallon, gas and food prices savage the economics of those good Hillary supporters, corruption runs wild, even more jobs get shipped overseas, the middle class becomes the lower class and on and on and on. The only good thing that will happen is the Clinton family won’t be able to ever show their face in public again without having to run from a lynching party. Imagine, now Bill Clinton is talking about Chelsea running for office, maybe being President. How much of an entitlement does the Clinton family feel about the Presidency? Apparently it is a birthright for them. Megalomaniacs one and all!
PS: To texte: who writes:

Checked out Hillary's legal background lately texte.
She worked for a law firm that defended communists and Black Panther party members. She was in on a lot of the legal planning -- that's why the Republican Party wants her to be the nominee, they have a guaranteed issue of Hillary the communist sympathizer and the radical's favorite lawyer to run on. Before you run your fingers off about radicals, do a little research.

Has anyone noticed that Hillary has, time and time again, projected her own persona and the weaknesses of her character on other people and situations?
This time it's Kenya, and she is Mugabe. It's not the first time she's unwittingly criticized a person or situation for doing exactly what she's been doing...examples from the last year are so numerous I don't even want to list them.
The point with Mugabe that escapes her own introspection is, he is ignoring the reality of the election and trying to muscle it his way.
Sound familiar?
I'm from NY. I voted for her as a Senator. She will never get my vote again except against a rabid right wingnut from the GOP...and then I'll carefully weigh the merits of the wingnut.
She's unscrupulous, a poor loser, an ungracious loser, and determined to make women look bad.
Enuf...if she takes this to the convention, I hope she's roundly vilified and her career finished once and for all.
I still remember clearly when she promised to support a fight in Hudson, NY against a cement plant...then did nothing, and refused to give "audience" to activists fighting the plant.
IT was defeated anyway...and then, without having done one stinking thing to support the movement against it, she called a news conference and took credit for her role in its defeat!
This is no public servant looking out for the little people, Appalachia, believe a New Yorker. This is a self-serving politician through and through.

Wow, what an overreaction. She has made a lot of mistakes in this campaign, but she is so not comparing the Democratic party to Zimbabwe; She's just using it as an example of how precious the right to vote is.
BTW, it's this kind of absurd bias and, frankly, paranoia that contribute to the divisions in the Democratic party. And ironically, these committed Obama supporters and Clinton haters may make it virtually impossible for Obama to not pick Clinton as the VP. If people accept that the race is over, and there is no need to automatically put the worst possible spin on everything Clinton does, there will no need for a unity ticket.
"She hasn't been able to win the Democratic Party nomination because of sexism, but she's the more electable candidate in the general???" - Kathy, first, the "she lost because of sexism" thing is a bit of a strawman argument. Second, we think she's more electable because a. she is better on both offense and defense against Republicans and b. because polls show she is more electable. We could be wrong, but it's a very reasonable argument.

OK, Rose, but she's comparing herself to Tsvangarai and civil rights and suffragettes-- as if her position is based on some sort of morality. It's not, of course-- she agreed to the rules at the time, but now that she won't win by the rules, she's trying to change them. And to whip up resentment against the party's nominee, as though winning by the rules that she agreed to is illegitimate.
That is bad.

"She has made a lot of mistakes in this campaign, but she is so not comparing the Democratic party to Zimbabwe; She's just using it as an example of how precious the right to vote is."
I think that's viewing the statement with, pardon the pun, rose-colored glasses. If her intent, as you suggest, was to simply express how precious the vote was, she could have used an example other than a fraud-ridden election in a country run by a despot. Her intent seems, to someone who admittedly isn't in her camp, to be to wave the bloody shirt of autocracy and lawlessness in denying people their vote. Of course, this analogy for this set of circumstances couldn't be any less appropriate -- Florida and Michigan knew their votes weren't going to count because they knowing broke agreed upon rules (which flys in the face of the lawless and autocratic nature of the argument). And, of course, it's often brought up, but bears repeating here, but these are rules that Clinton agreed upon back when she was inevitable. Surely the "plight" of Florida and Michigan voters would not matter to her if her position was reversed with Senator Obama.

This is getting truly ridiculous. I read today on The Page that Harold Ickes is defends designing the rules system and voting for the rules system that sanctioned Florida and Michigan by saying "punishment was imposed" and it's time to make sure the two states are included in the general election which makes no sense at all. He also states that Michigan's "uncommitted" delegates should be uncommitted which is patently ridiculous. Bill Clinton and Terry McCauliffe both said that halving the votes of Florida's delegates might be acceptable but now Senator Clinton is saying that there has to be a hundred percent solution and she's making ridiculous comparisons to a dictatorial regime. The first thing that needs to happen is to seat Michigan's delegates giving Clinton the percentage she "won" in Michigan and giving Obama the delegates won by "uncommitted." Next seat all of Florida's delegates. By my count, Obama still wins on the numbers. Then the superdelegates need to come out of hiding and end this nonsense on June 3rd.

Hillary as President: the Nightmare Scenario.
I like FlownOver's comment about just letting her have it and fall on her sword.
She has so much to recommend her for the job:
- Inability to financially manage her own campaign.
- Inability to find the high road in any debate.
- Inability to hire the right people to manage said campaign.
- Inability to hold a lead, even when starting with a huge lead in all the polls and a popular public perception.
- Inability to "close the deal" on Super Tuesday, a primary strategy designed to give her the nomination by her own Harold Ickes.
- Inability to admit defeat and work for the good of the party, because the good of the party has never been her agenda.
- Inability to read the signs right in front of her face about how Obama was out-managing the primaries, particularly with the caucuses and judging the mood of the electorate.
- Inability to...oh, you get the idea.
How does one translate a string of weaknesses, failures, poor judgments, hubris, overconfidence, inability to admit errors, outright fabrications like Bosnia and who knows what else that wasn't uncovered, and finally, campaign losses, which is where the rubber hits the road, into the qualities one votes for in an election?
Her campaign was akin to giving her the "rounding second base" head start and Obama catching her by third base. And now she's saying there should be five bases, not four.
"Yer out!"

I confess to a sadness...there was a lot about the Clinton years I liked and felt good about. Billary has ruined that for me, and I resent it, frankly.
Gobama! (whether he's ideal for the job or not...and I think he'll grow into it quickly, however green he is. At least he's got principles and some true class, not the snotty kind that comes with money, but human dignity inbred, that only comes from the soul. REad his books and you'll sense it in every page.)

JimNY
You guys need to clone Pat Moynihan, twice, and rid yourselves and the rest of us of the Pander Bears you sadly anointed as Senators.
Schumer IS not much better, given his penchant for rifling credit reports.
And Hillary couldn't get re-elected dog grabber in Pulaski County during the Arkysaw state fair.

You're right on that.
Ah, for the good old days.

And you thought Nixon and LBJ were ugly.
I did!
That's a good article, sums it up pretty well. I like the NY gubernator's line here:
"I would say at this point we're starting to see a little desperation on the part of a woman I still support and will support until she makes a different determination," Paterson told WAMC-FM in Albany, N.Y. "Candidates have to be cautious in their zeal to win that they don't trample on the process."
Trampling on the process...what a concept, eh Billary?
Notice how Bubba hasn't been prominent lately? I wonder if he's kicked back, feet up on a table, saying "Mission Accomplished"...whilst smoking a cigar. (Sorry, couldn't resist).
Mission Accomplished meaning, he helped keep her from showing him up. I think that's been part of his sub-lucid psychology all along.

Yeah!
Now I see it.
I have been wondering about those Michigan and Florida people.
Their resemblance to those Zimbabwe people is unmistakable!

Kathy R: I am sure the papers will be all atwitter about her Zimbabwe reference. I work with the senior communities, I can guarantee her vague reference to voting rights, Zimbabwe and Mugabe flew way over their heads. Most people probably don't follow Zimbabwe election issues, except of course elitists. Does that mean Hillary is an elitist?
As far as Wasserman, she always looks and acts like a Chihuahua on steroids. A very harsh, type A to the max congresswoman, who like Hillary (according to Mr. Carville) can give someone else a gonad and still have two. I get the sense from media down here that she does not play well with others and is not loved by her peers. I expect that someone in the Democratic Party will run against her in another year’s election and take her out. In fact I would think that the overly aggressive Hillary supporters who have lacked tact will all find themselves with primary battles in the coming years. I can guarantee you Senator Nelson is toast on his next run.

Floridian, you give me hope. Abd that Chihuahua image is outstanding.
