The McCain Speech
No doubt, John McCain's attempt to lay out the goals of his prospective presidency was a worthy and honorable effort--but there was something deeply hilarious about it as well. Take his paragraph about Iraq:
By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won. Iraq is a functioning democracy, although still suffering from the lingering effects of decades of tyranny and centuries of sectarian tension. Violence still occurs, but it is spasmodic and much reduced. Civil war has been prevented; militias disbanded; the Iraqi Security Force is professional and competent; al Qaeda in Iraq has been defeated; and the Government of Iraq is capable of imposing its authority in every province of Iraq and defending the integrity of its borders. The United States maintains a military presence there, but a much smaller one, and it does not play a direct combat role.
And the tooth fairy will spread giggle-juice throughout the land, and the Mets will win the World Series and I will lose 20 pounds while continuing to consume vast quantities of Chinese and Italian food.
Let's leave aside the transparent political crassness of this--actually, let's not. Clearly, McCain is trying to walk away from his support for a permanent (100 year) military presence. Indeed, the Senator's new dovery is undermined by the parameters for "victory" that he sets. As I've argued in the past, it is not wise to lay out timetables and end dates. The pace of withdrawal should be left to the commanders in the field, but it's the job of the President to set broad strategic goals. Some of McCain's goals are reasonable. We should be able to defeat the remnants of Al Qaeda in Iraq that are currently hunkered down in Mosul. But others are fanciful, at best. Militias disbanded? The notion of trying to disband the Mahdi Army, which has stood down--for the time being--in Basra and is continuing to fight in Sadr City--remains a fool's errand. And would McCain disband the Kurdish pesh merga? I don't think so. (In fact, he steadfastly refuses to notice that much of the backbone for the Iraqi Army is provided by the Badr Corps, yet another militia.)
The best reaction I've seen to McCain's Iraq fantasia comes from an old friend of his, Leslie H. Gelb, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations:
I think John McCain has been one of the most important voices on national security policy for many years now, so it really surprises me to see him giving speeches like the one today that are almost in "lala" land. These unsupported generalizations and predictions that he would have scoffed at as the old John McCain. Lets just take a couple of examples, one is what he says about the future Iraq. He says most of the troops will be gone in four years, at that time there will be relative security in the country and that it will be a democracy. But we have no idea how that is to come about. It certainly isn't coming about by the present polices of the Bush administration and the speech gives every indication he'll continue those policies and so it's kind of a wild eyed, unsupported prediction.
The rest of the speech is more of the same. Many of the goals McCain offers are admirable. I like the paragraphs about education and the environment. It's good to see that despite the camouflage of tougher language, he hasn't caved to his party's base on immigration (although we'll see how long that lasts, given the Libertarian threat posed by Bob Barr). I think it would be fun to have the President answer questions in Congress as the British Prime Minister does in Parliament. But McCain's continued support for tax relief for the wealthy, and his willful disregard of the income disparities that have become far more pronounced--indeed, encouraged--during the Bush Administration, are a fundamental abdication of the responsibilities of the next President. And the ridiculous lack of detail that mark the speech make it hard to take the thing seriously.

Well I'm sure someone is going to come out the wood work and claim that McCain's speech was powerful and serious.
Michael are you there?

Joe: Bush crys alone. For himself.
Could it be that despite the outward signs of confidence, all the criticism being heaped upon President Bush is getting to him?
It's sheer speculation, of course, but how do you explain why the president, welcomed to Israel with adulation, started to cry while being praised by a fellow world leader who expressed seemingly sincere admiration.
Bush has cried many times during his presidency -- when he's met with the families of dead soldiers, after 9/11, at disaster scenes. But this was different. In this case, it seems his tears were for himself.
Reuters has the video of what it describes as Bush's "emotional moment" after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert praised him for his leadership in the fight against extremists

The idea of the President getting pummeled by questions from Congress, a la England's Parliament, is a good one.
The rest of the speech is Tom Clancy-esque imperial American pseudo-science fiction claptrap.

Wha...?
It's "worthy and honorable" to offer promises of "fantasia" with a "ridiculous lack of detail that...make it hard to take...seriously?"
Somehow I doubt you'd call the same from a Democrat "worthy and honorable"...

Joe,
kudos! This is how you call a spade a spade. This speech by McBush is fairytale that meant to camouflage continuation of Bush policy. There will be plenty of moronic journalists (yes, Michael Scherer, I'm talking to you) and pundits who will be easily mislead. But at least you avoided this one trap.

The idea of the President getting pummeled by questions from Congress, a la England's Parliament, is a good one.
I thought so too, at first. Then I realized that the politicians in Congress would simply turn it into a game of gotcha. Imagine Mitch McConnell asking a reasonable question. I think it works in Britain partly because it has the base of the press asking tough, probing questions of politicians. Remember when Bush was briefly interviewed by a British journalist and everyone fell on the fainting couches because she didn't seem to be properly respectful? Because she actually asked hard questions and followed up...

It was a dark and stormy November 4th night, perhaps a night like that one in November 1992 when another interloper by the name of Perot had laid a heaping, overripe Republican carcass down at his own feet and smiled knowingly, when a steaming wet Bob Barr emerged from a darken alleyway, clutching a mass of human flesh, later known as John McCain's ass and stuck a fork in it saying he’s done, while pronouncing all was well in America - and finally after 8 years of criminal behavior and the abuse of our citizen's Constitutional rights, all was indeed well and the next morning the sun shown unusually bright and songbirds sang a new tune and from the Midwest there came a murmur… it’s time for the war crimes trials….. and Bob Barr was heard cackling as he slipped once more into the shadows having done a great service for his country.
I suggest John McCain's fantasy of 2013 is just that, a fantasy of biblical proportions. This is almost as good as his gas tax holiday promises. The point is that John McCain (Bush III) is going to have to deal with the Bob Barr just chewing him a new one on Constitutional rights abuses throughout this campaign. He’s going to take votes away from McCain maybe 3 to 4% in key states and about the only thing John McCain will have to look forward to in 2013 is soft food, a 24 hour duty nurse and someone periodically changing his depends.

For a guy who supported the war when it was popular to do so, turned against it when it was popular to do so, then declared the surge a failure before it had started, then made the prediction above, then refuses to acknowledge any progress being made, then reported Maliki lost in Basra (when even the NYT now admits his forces won and the government controls the city) you sure do think highly of your grasp of the issue.
Maybe you should think about declaring yourself an expert on a different issue. May I suggest an issue on which you have not been so consistently wrong?

Time Magazine is run by political hacks. Last few issues of Time has been pimping Obama. Hillary has been contesting not just against Obama but also the media. Actually Media thinks it can use its power to sway the people and the sad part it that the majority of the people get swayed. Every election the the poll numbers change week to week. Media does influence majority of the people. You guys have shown him as some kind of Messiah there to save America and the world. All I see in him is fluff. The content is missing. As they say with power comes responsibility. Time magazine should use power responsibly.
I am sure there many like me who will be not be wrongly influenced. I have been a lifelong democrat and this time I will vote republican. Actually McCain is the only republican I like and he is almost a democrat.

compromised_media, I understand where you're coming from. The media has been incredibly biased against Clinton. But they like McCain even more than Obama. That's why so many people think "he is almost a democrat." When it really matters, like on health care or Iraq, McCain is 100% Republican. And the next Presidency will be one of the most challenging in history, because of the mess Bush has made of things and other issues.
So it's bad enough that the media has helped their favorite Democrat win the nomination. We shouldn't allow them make their real favorite candidate win the Presidency.

The liberal media and their minions of far left liberal extremists are yet again poised to pounce on the first words uttered in this campaign that have any inkling of "hope" or "change", only because it makes their candidate look so out of touch.
Yes we can be vague on the left, but once the tables are turned they scream from the mountain top, "FOUL"! "That's our story line, no fair".
Take the blinders and rose colored glasses off swampylanders, the mud from the bottom of this cesspool is clouding your vision yet again.

I wonder if James P. Rubin's column in the Washington Post will get discussed today. I'm sure Michael has gotten a fax from McCain to spin from by now.

Hey Joe, Why don't you keep the Mets out of this. They're going all the way and they better get it done this year because they only win when republicans are in the white house.
1969-Nixon
1986-Reagan
Since 1962 the opposite is true with the skankees who only win when democrats are president.
Lets go Mets
Posted by mr albany | May 16, 2008 9:29 AM
YEAH MCCAIN!!!
Have you ever wonder why the symbol of the Democrats is a DONKEY- Because you all is that. MCCAIN GOT THIS... I Have never seen so many dumb people. LOL
KEEP FIGHTING YOU ALL IS HELPING OUR PARTY. LOL
WE are not even worrying about a backfire. We already know Democrats are dumb and lazy. So I hope Obama win so we can keep the Whitehouse because you all are to DUMB to go vote....lol
MCCAIN 08
P.S.
we will rule for another 4years and keep you ALL in your PLACE...lol
SORRY DONKEYS (JACK---) YOU WILL NOT GET THIS ELECTION

...That was hilarious, be it serious or parody.
Posted by Swampatriot | May 16, 2008 11:26 AM
You know what's halarious about this article, Klein? The fact that you state "And the tooth fairy will spread giggle-juice throughout the land, and the Mets will win the World Series and I will lose 20 pounds while continuing to consume vast quantities of Chinese and Italian food." This has kept me laughing for a good hour that you put THAT spin on MCCAINS campaign when if you could gain some common sense and really analyze Obama's campaign message, speeches, and plans you would realize that quote should belong in an article about OBAMA.
Oh and PS, any day now I expect to see that unbiased edition of Time Magazine that presents all the candidates equally, rather than huge, smiling pictures of Obama and ugly, dark, depressing pictures of Clinton/McCain.

"Actually McCain is the only republican I like and he is almost a democrat."
Stop huffing paint and read the damn news.
chell27and1: Look at the picture at the very top of the page. McCain looks noble and heroic, Clinton looks high, Obama looks constipated.

They only come out late at night to drink...
Posted by 53_3 | May 16, 2008 1:18 PM
Is McCain smoking medical marijuana? If he is, can I have some so I can imagine great outcomes for the moral debacles of MY life?
Posted by Karen | May 16, 2008 3:44 PM
Many of the goals McCain offers are admirable,
but we've been trying to achieve them for five years now and we don't have much to show for it.
does he have a military stratagy that hasn't been tried?
does he have a new plan to get a functioning iraq army up and running so we don't have to be in charge of the sercurity anymore?
how, exactly , is this goona happen?

"My plan to end this war will finally put pressure on Iraq's leaders to take responsibility for their future. We will help Iraq reach a meaningful accord on national reconciliation. We will engage with every country in the region - and the UN - to support the stability and territorial integrity of Iraq. And we will launch a major humanitarian initiative to support Iraq's refugees and people. But Iraqis must take responsibility for their country. It is precisely this kind of approach - an approach that puts the onus on the Iraqis, and that relies on more than just military power - that is needed to stabilize Iraq."
-Barak Obama
And then the sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing, and everyone will know we should do the right thing and the world will be perfect!
