The Giant Pool of Money
One good thing came out of the two hours I spent at DC's only vehicle inspection station: I had a chance to listen to "This American Life's" episode devoted to explaining -- really! -- the global sub-prime/credit crisis. It is exactly as funny and interesting as you wouldn't expect it to be, a riveting narrative with distinct characters and plot twists -- the most jarring of which might be just how quickly the American mortgage market went from a boring and safe investment backwater to the financial equivalent of the Wild West. The main character in the story is the "giant pool of money" -- 70 trillion dollars -- that "wants" to be invested around the world. There are surprisingly few villains, except maybe Alan Greenspan and the scads of mortgage brokers who pushed borrowers into loans they didn't need and could never keep up with (one of the borrowers profiled discovers, much too late, that his broker told lenders that he earned $16,850 a month). I didn't come away knowing any better which candidate has the best solution to the crisis, but I do think I get how it happened. More than you can say for John McCain! Am I right, folks? Am I right?
Anyway, there are some parts of the country where TAL hasn't aired yet -- check here -- if you're in one of them, I highly recommend tuning in. And it should be up in their archives or available via podcast next week.

I heard a little snippet of it on NPR on Friday and at this point I think I know more about structured financial instruments and causes of housing degringolade than John McCain. At least I don't think we need to do a Weekend at the Barneys with Alan Greenspan as John McCain has suggested. Nor do I think reading Greenspan's book is the holy-grail to understanding economy as McCain is under the impression when he said he needs to read Greenspan's book to get a grasp of economy which by his own estimate is not where it needs to be.

I know it's OT, but an early exit poll from Oregon... I just voted for Obama!
BTW, I predict Oregon to go very heavily for Obama, contrary to conventional wisdom regarding the history of race relations in this state.
This morning in the SafeWay seating area I overhead an older white male saying he's going to vote for Obama. It was interesting because he also said that his first reaction was a racist stereotype; but the strength of Obama's message sortof waved the foolishness of such an opinion in his face.
I'm seeing this all over.
People who I would normally call racists, but whose sin is to believe in a stereotype, rather than to harbor any intentional ill will, not only coming out in support of Obama, but experiencing personal growth in the process.
Identity politics takes on a new nature when people secretly wish they themselves were "better" than the way they were raised. This is a chance for them not only to oppose the failed policies of the past 7 years, but also to win redemption by participating a national reconciliation process.

Yes, there is only one for all of DC. And it only moves as fast as the workers want to move. So yes, it is conceivable for you to be in line for two hours (sometimes more).
I miss living in DC, but I can do without the DMV and inspection station.

Let me get this straight...
You were participating in one of the most intrusive but arguably necessary examples of government regulation, and you were listening to one of the few media outlets that still involve public funding and the show was about one of the worst failures to properly regulate financial markets in the last fifty years and you're not sure who has the best solution to the problem but while you were thinking about it, you were nevertheless releived that you were able to think of something negative to say about St John McCain.
Maybe you need a nice vacation.

When the economy generates trillions in new wealth, and the wealthiest 1% refuse to let any of it slip into the pockets of ordinary people, the rich will do their best to force that money to make more money for them. If there's nothing productive to invest in - because ordinary folks don't have any more money to spend on new goods - the idle money will be used to generate bubbles.
Dot com. Nasdaq. Real Estate. And coming soon to a grain merchant near you: commodities.
Refuse to share wealth with hoi polloi and it will end up eating itself. The rich would rather put up with massive bubble losses than allow anyone to say out loud that they haven't the slightest effin' idea what to do with all that gelt. If that secret got out, we might go back to JFK's tax structure. You remember, the one that made the rich richer while giving the middle class its last real raise.

Ana, I'm shocked and disillusioned. Here I had this notion - consider it quaint, if you wish - that, as a highly respected journalist on a national-level magazine, you couldn't possibly be bothered by something so mundane as getting your own car inspected. Ana - Vermont's population is 623,000- D.C.'s 550,000. Vermont has somewhere between 1100 and 1200 vehicle inspection stations (most every service/repair garage). I'll grant you the geography requires more, and also grant there's not as much quality control. But it sure is hard to picture one DMV inspection station for you all. Pretty impressive it all gets done so quickly.

I am trying to figure out other than bowing to the pressure of this blog site, that you attempt to tag McCain with not knowing much about the mortgage melt-down, but I guess I need to satisfy myself with the fact you also pointed out that you say, "I didn't come away knowing any better which candidate has the best solution to the crisis".
I am totally against bailing out either the Bear Sterns of the world or any individual who made the choice to get a mortgage which they were clearly not qualified to undertake. Why should my tax dollars be spent on bad choices by lender and borrower??

Ana, here's a hint: Get the car inspected when the weather is really, really bad and everyone else is afraid to go out. Back when I lived in DC proper, we found ourselves under a very rare hurricane watch, and my first thought was: Perfect day to get the car inspected. Sure enough, there was no line. (Usually, it's full of taxicabs that have already flunked three or four times.)
Earthquakes, mudslides, terrorist attacks, pestilence or any other natural disaster would be a good time, too. Or you could move to the burbs, like I did.

They probably shouldn't, but it does point to the importance of discloser laws and other forms of "red tape" that businesses are often burdened with. The Republican mantra of non-interference with business has shown itself in this instance to create more problems than it solves.
This is one area where balance is the key.

I do not have a problem when any candidate is pointed out as not in touch with any issue. However, a carpet bombing statement that all candidates do not have a clue, followed by a laser guided missle statement that McCain knows less than AMC is not a vaild statement for either AMC or any journalist.
This type of reporting is opinionated and subjective. Not the type of reporting or blogging from a highly held and regarded Time writer.
And, at least McCain is honest enough to admit, that his specific knowledge about economics is lacking. More truthful and honest than either Clinton or Obama have thus far said about their knowledge and experience. Just throwing money at a problem is not sound economic judgment.

you saying Obama or Clinton being dishonest is an excellent example of carpet bombing statement since you did not provide any evidence. At least on McCain, it is safe to say that McCain is illiterate economically and thus extrapolate that he might not know much about housing crisis either. Furthermore, the fact that it took him two or three tries to get a semblance of a policy state his obvious incompetence. Obama and Clinton have detailed policies and had them for a while. As for Obama's or Clinton's grasp of economy, like any candidate it is judged based on the depth and breadth of their answers to these questions. They both have provided in depth answers whereas McCain has stated vague, contrdictory generalities.

Rustydog is clearly missing the context involved. AMC is rather upfront about her personal fondness for John McCain and has taken a lot of heat from the blogosphere as a result.
Not only is "am I right?" an attempt at humor but to my eye, its a rather successful one.
John McCain's problem is that he takes the "one size fits all" approach to economic issues which appeals to certain simple minded folks in Pa. but is nevertheless amassing a rather unimpressive track record when it comes to creating actual wealth for more than a small exclusive subset of Americans.

Obama's economic policy is redistribution of the wealth of this country with more entitlement programs, throwing money at problems that the free market system we have will take care of without continued TAX and SPEND democrat policies.
Clinton, also wants to do a very similiar program, with the exception of agreeing with McCain recently on a gas tax holiday.

as a recovering member of the mortgage business, i can vouch for TAL's summation. I would also point to an earlier poster point regarding commodities. THe villian is the giant pool of money that has to be invested. Money is the root of all evil, so look for more industries to be decimated by the lure of greed. The money still exists, and let me say thank god W's idea about letting individuals invest their soc sec money didnt gain acceptance. That giant pool of money would have been GODZILLA!!! destroying everything in its path...thankfully i got off the boat a few years ago and still have my sanity and at least some of my soul...

Wait, people have to get their cars inspected in some states? That's hilarious - in NV they don't care if it's a deathtrap so long as it passes the smog check. Yearly check, spend 5 minutes, they electronically transfer the info the dmv, voila!
