Do you think she is actually calling for someone to shoot Obama? That would certainly be one way to do it...

This makes me think that perhaps her comparison of the Florida primaries to Zimbabwe wasn't malicious.

Could it be that she keeps flailing around for political analogies, and keeps choosing the most awkward cases?

Ah yes. All this time I was calling for Hillary to get out, I failed to consider that Obama might be assassinated. How silly of me. Well, now I'm convinced. Go Hillary!

I'll try to give her credit for being incredibly insensitive as opposed to unbelievably malicious.

I thought that Bill had locked up the nomination by February or March. As I recall, Jerry Brown hung around for a little while after the result was already certain, but he didn't do anything that hurt Clinton's chances in the general-- he was more Mike Huckabee than Hillary Clinton.

I could be misremembering, though.

I think Matt Yglesias said something about how Clinton's strategy was hang around in case Obama gets hit by a bus. Life imitates sarcasm.

It's her exit strategy? So she's decided to take her reputation down with her?

Of course she is the age when Kennedy's assasanation was an important formative event and is certainly compelling evidence that important events in the campaign can happen later than May.

Every f--king word out of this woman's mouth is further evidence that she's Vince Foster's murderess.

What if she had said that there's an Eliot Spitzer moment just around the corner for every candidate?

What if she had said that even most upright of figures have been found out to have fathered illegitimate children?

What if she said that some of the best-loved Democratic politicians have had career-ending affairs exposed at the most inappropriate...doh!

Of course she can't say what she's really talking about.

As everyone knows, Barack Obama is not perfection incarnate, he's a well-connected politician from Illinois. Given how the "Wright Controversy" exploded into the MSM from right-wing blogs at a seemingly totally arbitrary point in the campaign, it's not insane in the slightest to assume that anything can happen.

If I were an Obama supporter, I'd be concentrating on how best to talk about what he's going to do for Americans, since that might be the only talking point left after another huge charisma-flushing event takes place.

She's right: in the world of youtube and "leaks" (good blogger journalism) anything can happen.

Every time we validate the political press corps' "sense" that "she's just too cold, calculating, ambitious and power-hungry" by seizing on every word of Clinton's for proof of that narrative, we give them the power to define terms of the debate. That sort of "interpretation" is how we got our narratives about "liar" Gore and "plain-spoken" Bush handed to us. It's also how we're getting "truth teller" "tower of integrity" John McCain shoved at us.

Is it too much to ask to hold off on our impulses to condemn and ridicule, at least until we're a unified party --or hold the Presidency? Is it too much to ask not for us not to jump up and down making the biggest scandal out of every word from this fellow liberal Democrat's mouth?

stuart, none of that, not even an assassination, is reason for her to stay in a race she won't win, is it?

I don't care if she stays in or not but what there is something that I don't understand.

Say she "suspends" and then three weeks later something happens to derail Obama, the party would look to her no matter the current status of her campaign.

They are "surprised" by the reaction to the remarks, and insist that she was simply referring to campaigns going on into the summer.

This makes no sense. They're surprised? Were they surprised that people thought equating "hard-working Americans" with "white Americans" was surprising? This is just another example of how the Clinton campaign's statements have such little credibility--electability rationales change with the wind direction and latest skewed polls.

No matter how she might have meant it. It came out completely wrong.

Will she apologize or just say he misspoke or say the press is piling on again?

Gotta disagree with you stuart, it really did sound to me on first read that she was hoping someone would kill Obama. Second and third read come out the same way. Pretty much disgusting and beyond shameful to hope the other guy dies. Worse to be thinking about it so much that accidentally let it slip out loud.

As reason to stay in the race, Sen Clinton refers to the assassination of Bobby Kennedy that took him out of the picture.

And Gov Hackabee at the meeting of the bitter gun people thinks it funny that Barack would duck a shot.

If the situations were reversed and he refused to drop out after Hillary won the majority of the delegates, compared the MI/Fl situation to Zimbabwe and then brought up an assassinated candidate (the same week that candidate's brother was diagnosed with a malignant tumor) would you be as blase?

Of course the post by Digby about the op-ed pieces in the NYT and Christian Science Monitor about Obama's Muslim background wouldn't be nearly so interesting to write about. That piece also dissects the viral e-mail about Obama being Muslim which is the reason cited by lots of people for not voting for him. Another thing that Obama supporters ought to find ways to fight instead of worrying about Hillary staying in until the last primary is over.

Yeeah, I think that's already been done. A friend tried to get me into a recent event here in Michigan...but the Secret Service came in and had clamped down everything tight, that there was no way for me to get in without an invitation, and that he had never seen that amount of security for any presidential candidate coming through the facility. Ever.

Why should we keep giving her the benefit of a doubt when she keeps doing this stuff? Whether it was a bad choice of words or whatever, it seems like wishful, warped thinking on her part.

We don't need a "Vice-Candidate". In no other election do people stick around for that reason. I think the DNC has her address and phone number. We know how to reach her if needed.

I can't honestly believe that the subtext to her words is that she wants Obama to get assassinated.

I think she wanted to point out an incident in a Democrat primary that everyone knows occurred in June, and it so happens that said incident involves murder.

I don't think she was saying Obama would be assasinated, she was saying that RFK was still in a primary fight in June, was assasinated right after the California primary. Thus that campaigns go on for a long time and no one was calling for RFK or McCarthy to get out of the race in June.

And I agree that its not insane to recognize that anything can happen. But it is insane (in the sense of really really stupid) to suggest that one should continue to campaign because assassinations happen. It really is. Sorry.

Actually, I fully agree with your sentiment. Just win. But I feel that the best way to do that is for Democrats to convince her to simply go away, because she is the one not focused on party at all - Democrats who continue to indulge her hopeless quest really are the ones hurting our chances to win.

Another thought - I've been assuming Pelosi, Reed, Dean, Gore, etc. were going to keep any delegates they control under wraps until all the primaries were done a week from Tuesday. Given the non-stop ugliness coming from the Clinton camp, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see a flood of super delegates declaring for Obama over the long weekend. If for nothing else than to save what's left of Hillary's rapidly collapsing career.

I'm starting to think Rachel Maddow is making more and more sense about Clinton running a post-rational campaign. She really looks like she's coming unhinged. First she says all the stories coming out of her campaign about veep talks is really the fault of the Obama campaign and now she says hey, maybe he'll get killed, you never know, as a reason to stay in the race. Watching her public speeches the last few days is like watching a study in multiple personalities as she goes from I'm going to win to party unity to take it to the convention all in the span of a few minutes.

Kind of making my point (and Hillary's) that there is a lot of unnecessary handwringing going on about the fact that this primary is stretching out. It won't hurt anything for Hillary to stay in until June 3rd.

Clinton, Obama, and McCain are all deeply flawed people, but they don't want their opponents to die. Let's use some common sense here.

I can completely understand why people would be upset about this, but the only bad spin to put on this is Sean's view: that she wants him dead. And that is so crazy that it paradoxically shows her comments should be taken at face value as a poorly worded historical overview of campaigns. It is the only remotely reasonable explanation.

The man has been getting death threats and its not out of the realm of possibility for some nutcase to take Hillary's words as an okay to harm Obama. Especially after she has moved every goal post and thrown Obama under the bus numerous times in what is turning out to be a counter productive all out effort to win this race. Its also an insult to the Kennedy family.

Unbelievable.

A Hypothetical Speech by Vice Presidential Candidate Clinton

Thank you for welcoming me here tonight. I know that we are all proud of Barack, who has risen from humble beginnings to such heights--great heights, perilous heights. As you may know, 30% of serious accidents occur from a height of 10 feet or above.

And so we now set out together on our journey--a journey of hope, a journey of change, and yes, a journey of great demands. For the Presidency places great demands on all of those who hold the office--we have seen how amazingly quickly it can age people in the poignant photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was succeeded by Harry S. Truman while still in office.

In this journey, we will put forward our shared goals--of expanded health coverage, against the unexpected and often fatal illnesses that can rob even those citizens that seem the healthiest of their ability to work, even of their lives.

Of protection against unexpected attack on our country, often aimed at those who are placed in the most critical positions to lead this nation. Of conservation of our precious energy resources, without which, even the most powerful of us can wind up stranded in a desert motorcade, without food, water, or wireless reception to contact others for help. Of greater support for culture and the arts--beginning with increased support for our very own Ford's Theatre here in Washington, DC.

Many of you will hear Barack speak later today, from a platform in Norman, Oklahoma--a humble platform, a rickety platform, a platform susceptible to Norman's notoriously strong and unexpected winds. There--god willing--he will tell you of what we hope to accomplish. He will speak of the unity that he and I wish to achieve for this nation, just as Andrew Johnson and Lincoln strove for such national unity. And he will tell you of our wish for change.

Change. An important word. None of us can know the changes that will occur in our lives. None of us can predict what momentous events, what disasters may befall us. A simple damaged left engine turbine stabilizer in a campaign plane. A frayed electrical line dangling, unseen, from a remote access satellite hookup van. A safe, falling, unexpectedly, to the sidewalk from the 8th floor of the Hotel Aldion in Norman, Oklahoma.

And so, we must dedicate ourselves, consecrate ourselves, to reach these most important national objectives today--while we still can. And like Kennedy, Garfield, McKinley, and other Presidents before him, we know that Barack will strive to achieve these goals--in the face of the awesome unknowns that lay before us all.

Not to forget some of your reactions to Obama saying the word sweetie, his wife saying for the first time she was proud of her country, Obama's bitter and gun comments and Rev Wright's comments. Your reactions were pretty much over the top.

You couldn't understand or give anyone a break on those. Now some one suggests the black candidate might get assissinated in June and you guys all of sudden can understand what the white female candidate was really trying to say and explain it all away. Luckily we have this thing called the internet, with which we may sometimes disprove allegations of hypocrisy:

I personally would never use that style when speaking to a younger woman I didn't know in an office setting or some other scenario while engaging her as a professional, simply because I'm terrified of being That Condescending Guy (tm) --a social retardation that hits educated or professional men especially woefully as they age.

That said, I'm sure that we should not be looking to minesweep Barack Obama's every sentence in every circumstance for its harm or assistance to alleviating social injustice.

Maybe that's just the first word that came to the man's tired mind.

GySgt213, Okay, I was one of those people who didn't like Obama's "sweetie" comment. But I never said it showed he planned to legalize job discrimination against young women, and start a program to have every woman spend 3 hours a day baking. Nor will I use your "white female" comment to argue that you are a reverse Geraldine Ferraro. That's the kind of paranoia and bad logic people like you are using.

The real question here is does she want him dead. And honestly, if someone's answer to that question is "Yes," than that's pretty much the definition of an over the top reaction.

Here’s Hillary’s assassination comments said another way: “Well look what happened to Bobby Kennedy. The primary campaign wasn’t completely over yet and before it ended he got assassinated. Same thing could happen again. Why quit my campaign before then, ah, I mean before the primaries end.” What an idea for this coldhearted witch to express! If some crackpots out there haven’t thought of doing such a thing already, well then the idea of doing such a thing is sure out there now! She might as well have called out for someone, anyone to kill Obama. What a monster. We’re sick to death of hearing from her. She needs to shut up and go away. I think the idea that Hillary Clinton really wants Barack Obama to be hurt is probably false.

That being said, I think it is also true that the only reason she is staying in the race right now is to accumulate as may delegates as possible so that if the unthinkable were to happen to Obama this summer before the convention, she would be able to muscle her way to the nomination over someone like say, Al Gore, who would be the natural unity choice in that situation.

I think she is like someone who is number one on a list to recieve a an organ transplant? Is she hoping that someone gets in a car crash so she can get a heart transplant? Sort of yes, sort of no. The sentiments she is probably feeling are complicated.
