Probably the best strategy. Go ahead and start the general, but hold a lot of the first general campaign events in states where there are primaries to be won.

Wolfson and his Fox Friends have no chance of enticing Obama into a debate in either of the states Obama's's already pretty much conceding.

Nice of Bill Burton not to mention that McCain has gone unchallenged for so long is because the media fluffers (cough*Dana Bash*cough) have ignored his incompetent grasp on so many issue of import, from his misunderstanding of the takings provision of the Consititution, to his not knowing Sunni from Shi'ia, or which group Al Qaeda is aligned with.

Note: I don't include Karen in this group of fluffers. Just the majority of the rest of those reporters covering McCain. I was there in 2000 in NH and saw just exactly how things worked.

It wasn't pretty then, and it hasn't changed much.

Seriously, Howard Wolfson needs to find another line of work. He and Mark Penn and Terry McAuliffe are maybe the three biggest reasons I dislike Clinton's campaign.

Olbermann reported last week that Wolfson is already shopping for a book deal.

Obama's campaign needs to start working the refs here. Mark Salter is going to keep whining about unfair media treatment even as he advises the guy who has probably gotten the best media treatment of any politician in US history. Obama's press people need to be in that game too.

Why couldn't HRC win in Alaska, Alabama, Colorado, Connecicut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, the Virgin Islands, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the rest of the world outside the US?

My sister's been working her heart out for Obama in Kentucky, so I'm disappointed he isn't putting in more of an effort there this week, but it's understandable. They've been seriously organized in Ky for a long time.

Do you think the pundits with Short Memories (I'm thinking Tweety in particular) will try to revitalize the race when Hillary wins by a huge margin tomorrow? They seemed at a loss today on Morning Joe (but at least they had natural disasters to talk about!)

This makes sense for Obama. He needs to start running in the GE, and it's best for him if his losses in WV and KY are minimized.

Kathy, my own thinking is that she needs to make major inroads in the popular vote lead for anyone to talk about her having a chance. And that's not going to happen. Of course there will be more discussions about how Obama is unelectable because white working-class voters don't like him, but as RKA pointed out on another thread, it could have been worse if Clinton had withdrawn after NC and IN since an uncontested loss would be very embarrassing. I was a bit disappointed yesterday to see no op-eds talking about HRC;s decision to stay in the race in terms of Mother's Day. There are many women such as myself who see HRC's going full-steam ahead and showing such unflagging energy as the greatest Mother's Day "gift" we could receive.

Southern Bell, there was a nice one of those in the Chicago Tribune yesterday.

My question is...Why is Michael Scherer such a pos? The kool-aid has gotten to him. His most recent article is biased to say the least.

With both Obama and Clinton being historic candidates, I do think it's unfair to talk about the necessity of Clinton withdrawing early. It would be the same if the situations were reversed. This is the first time ever that people have been able to vote for a woman President, and honestly, it may be the last time for a while. Some women will never again have a chance to vote for a woman President.

So the media should stop acting as if this is like Huckabee staying in late.

If Clinton had been pressured to withdraw early, Southern Bell, that point might be worth considering. Chronology sticklers will point out, though, that May is pretty far along, as far as primaries go.

Plus, Clinton will remain on the ballot, just like Huckabee and Paul do in the GOP, so if the women of Oregon really really want to vote for Clinton, they will have that chance.

I agree with FastEddie, and John Edwards. Let her run, but no more negative ads about the word "bitter," or his failure to falsely promise cheaper gasoline, or anything else. She should be like Mike Huckabee.

It didn't occur to me at the time, but Obama should have been acting like this is over since it was over, when he won 13 in a row, and Clinton no longer had a chance to catch up. A side benefit-- in that parallel universe, we would never have had the flag pin/Ayers-fest that ABC inflicted on us in that PA debate.

Rose - I remember Shirley Chisholm fondly, and so although it sometimes seems like it, Hillary isn't the first-ever woman running for president. She's presented as the first woman with a chance to become president, and Barack as the first black to have a chance to become president, but nobody had better call either of them the "first serious" black or woman candidate, because Shirley Chisholm was a very serious black woman candidate, even though she didn't have a chance. But she did have 152 delegates (John Edwards has 19). So take heart.

I happen to think HRC would make a better president than Obama. But beside that point, she is a symbol for many women and having her pull out due to pressure from (mostly) men would be very disheartening.

I think that engaging Hillary Clinton at all is pretty counterproductive to Obama at this point. It would be making her case for her that she still has a chance of winning.

I have no problem with women voting for Hillary in the numbers they are, and they have every right (given the large percentage of African Americans voting for Senator Obama) to point this out. Furthermore someone could argue what we need in this country is more female leadership. Many male candidates have ran on an implied, if not overt, campaign of basically, "I'm tough and manly." So there's nothing wrong with a female candidate, especially in troubled times, pointing out the converse of this just might be the best approach.

However, Bill Clinton also got 90% of the black vote. So I do find the claim by some (no one here) that African-Americans are just voting for the black candidate slightly disengenuous.

When they went 90% for Bill Clinton it was cool. Now that they're suddenly going 90% for Barack Obama some in the media want to make it purely a racial issue. It's not and there's a clear contradiction there.

Especially since both Obama and Clinton are such strong and qualified candidates - no one is talking about electing an incompetent former cheerleader who has never succeeded at any job in their life. At the start of this election, the white guys running had to be better than both Clinton and Obama to win my support (Biden came closest). Of course it is important for everyone to remember that both of them are historic candidates - which some Clinton and Obama supporters forget.

1) Strange: The awareness and curiosity in kids. Last night I tried to be of help on history of renown leaders - like women in Africa who led their armies into war. Heroically, I came up with one name, Cleopatra. Then I got a humbling education on many others.

2) Thus, Hillary's reaction - or the lack of it - to the public comment on her "testicular fortitude" was curious. And then there was the comment from a member of her staff about her having more "gonads" than her opponent. Does she need those to be an effective leader? Is that a requirement that is implicit or explicit in our constitution?

My thoughts exactly. The committee meeting is on May 31st. Maybe he's trying to have some influence (these states' Democratic parties have some say in the resolution, after all), or maybe he's just introducing himself to them because he hasn't had the opportunity to campaign there yet. (Although he did say recently that he had campaigned everywhere except Alask, Hawaii, and one other state.)
