Morning Questions
Why is it that the neocons always assume that when Barack Obama says he wants to talk to the leadership in Iran, he's talking about the clown Ahmedinejad, who has no power over foreign policy or the nuclear program?
Isn't it possible that Obama is talking about meeting with Iran's actual leader--indeed, it's there in his title: Supreme Leader--Ali Khamenei?
Could it be that the neocons want to associate Obama with the relatively powerless, Israel-hating Ahmadinejad for other reasons?
Is it possible that such sophisticated foreign policy thinkers as Bill Kristol, who yet again cited the Iranian "President" in his latest column, don't understand that Ahmadinejad is spewing hate mostly to draw (Iranian) public attention away from his dismal economic record?
Do these brilliant strategic thinkers--starting with George W. Bush--worry that their over-the-top rhetoric only serves to empower the mullahs and assorted cave-dwelling extremists by making the Great Satan into a bellicose cartoon in the eyes of the Islamic world?
Indeed, whom do we think Hamas and Hezbollah and Ahmadinejad are really supporting in the 2008 election--the candidate who increases their street cred by demonizing them, or the candidate who increases our street cred by proposing talks?
Finally, are talks capitulation? Didn't Churchill say something about preferring jaw-jaw to war-war? And did Obama say anything to indicate he wouldn't use force where necessary--as in Afghanistan? Didn't McCain criticize Obama for proposing that we go after the Al Qaeda infrastructure in "our ally" Pakistan?
Did McCain read this regarding Pakistan this morning?
Just asking.
Extra Credit Question: Why is it okay for McCain to say one thing in Davos and the exact opposite in the 2008 presidential campaign?

Good thing that your print column set me straight about how Barack Obama is exactly the same as John McCain when it comes to these issues. Good thing that your print column explained how John McCain and Barack Obama are completely equivalent when it comes to diplomacy.

Joe,
There has never been anything more to Bush's foreign policy than macho posturing. Now that this has been exposed by failure after failure Bush and McCain offer… more macho posturing. But I love it when McCain calls Obama naive, as if anyone could be more naive about the Middle East than Bush. I am REALLY looking forward to the rebuttal Obama is scheduled to offer today.

The biggest question is the one you failed to ask, Joe: Why is it John McCain advocated negotiating with Hamas in 2006 but has now flip flopped on that position?
Another question you might ask is why the McCain campaign has to keep firing aides for their ties to lobbyists and 527's when he claims he's so against that type of thing? Or why top McCain aid, Charlie Black, worked for Ahmed Chalabi, Iraq flim flammer and accused Iranian spy?

Why not ask the Bush administration about dealing with Libya after they bombed PanAm 103? Which was actually a good decision, but it is kind of hard to argue that GWB doesn't deal with terrorists. And, forgive me, isn't North Korea part of the vaunted "axis of evil"? Why are we talking to them?

Dishonesty and jingoism is all the GOP has on foreign policy.
As Terrapinion says, go tell it to the readers!
You know, this election is going to be bigger than 1980. That's when you decided that the Democrats were pretty out to lunch, and started writing different versions of that Democrats in Disarray story too many times over the [next] 25 years.
Now, it is the GOP that's adrift, with the same demonstrably false beliefs, enforced in the party with a rigid political correctness, that caricatured the Democrats in the 1980s. You know, fight them there so we won't fight them here, cutting taxes always raises revenues, people will love us for invading their countries, talking to other countries = appeasement, etc.
Go write it in the magazine! Without any false equivalence! You can do it!

Joe - I'm sure that because Jamie Rubin's column (see Dis-Lib) and his actual video clip of McCain saying "at some point we'll have to deal with Hamas" came too late for your print column, that you'll be taking the opportunity to cover it next week in dead tree.
In the meantime, haven't you noticed how often McCain says something completely opposite of things he has said in the recent past? It's time for your and your colleagues to hold his feet to the fire on this one. This is what I like to refer to as the funhouse mirror syndrome. All over the world there are people who profit from conflict. All over the world there are also people who just get their kicks over it.
The fact is that in most conflicts, the people on each side profit from the presence of their counterparts across the divide. Given this it's probably innappropriate when we we refer to violence as 'instability.' Many violent situations are remarkably stable and long lasting simply due to the self-reinforcing nature of the participants.

To many of us, it was clear as soon as McCain announced his bid for the Republican nomination that he was going to jettison every reasonable position he ever held in order to appease the base. The downside to this is that the press corps will continue to remember his centrist credentials while totally failing to notice that he has since repudiated every position that provided those credentials.
He gets the best of both worlds. This is why we find AMC's admitted amity toward him so frustrating. She's getting played and from where I'm sitting, its like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

What, exactly, is wrong about the statements made by Bush in a speech to the Israeli Knesset? Are they in keeping with Israel's official policy of not negotiating with terrorists? I believe so. Were there any factual errors in regards to the history mentioned by the president? I don't see any. Are those criticizing the statements offering any examples of how dialogue with terrorists, or the states that support them, have been successful in reducing terror or discouraging terrorism support? Not that I have read or heard. Were any names offered as examples of appeasers? Nope, not a one. So, why is it that Obama and the Dems are in such an uproar over this speech? I suspect that they realize that their position on diplomacy with terrorists and terrorist states is not defensible and so have gone on the attack.

Do you believe that the US has carried out negotitations with terrorists in Iraq to quell violence? By terrorists I mean peole who were attempting to kill US troops before diplomacy was initiated.
Define appeasement, please. Some Conservatives appear ignorant of the difference between appeasement and diplomacy.

dialogue with terrorists, or the states that support them
Its interesting that you would toss off "or the states that support them" as if that were just an additional little detail rather than an entirely different subject. Did you know that we have been in direct negotiations with Iran over their role in Iraq? Do you approve?
Did you know that the USA is currently providing safe harbor for a confessed Cuban terrorist? Do you approve?
Obama's position of not negotiating with terrorists is firm. But to not engage in diplomacy with legitimate governments including ones that we despise is unbridled stupidity.

Doug_13,
In the speech Bush boy conflated negotiation with capitulation in order to accuse his domestic political enemies of 'appeasement'
Oh and he did it from foreign soil which is considered unpresidential.
That's why people are pissed.
There was also a rich irony in Bush accusing anyone of being naif like Chamberlain was with Hitler in that the Bush family (Prescot Bush) had extensive business interests in Nazi Germany. What's would he say about that? Takes one to know one?
Bush is a comedian, but the jokes on America.
Also if Bush's speech could be treated as ambiguous, McCain went out his way to make it specific, as did various other GOP advocates within 12 hours of the delivery in the kenesset. Now I have to ask you not to be naive. Google Dog Whistle politics.
Posted by Northern Observer | May 16, 2008 10:45 AM
So Doug_13, do you really think that when Bush spoke of "appeasers" before the Knesset, he was actually referring to some contributor to the Worker's Daily?
If he didn't think he was offering criticism of anything worthwhile, why did he waste Israel's time blabbing about it?
Plausibly deniable slander is the GOP MO.
Just like Rove's "liberals want to give Osama bin Laden therapy" speech of a few years ago. By failing to specify who they're talking about, they can feign surprise when criticized for implying that half of Americans are treasonous. "Oh, no, I was only criticizing someone no one's ever heard of on the faculty of a community college in Oregon. Why, how could anyone think otherwise?"
Oh, and just for the record, most Israelis want to negotiate with Hamas. The noisy form of "pro-Israel" sentiment that we're accustomed to seeing here is uniquely American. When you actually have to live with the consequences of your actions, and can't view it as an entertaining morality play from afar, you quickly move beyond the childish version of foreign affairs favored by the GOP and neoconservatives in the US.

I don't even know why I'm responding to this, because it's such a glaringly obvious straw man. But anyway, no one in the Democratic party advocates diplomacy with terrorists. And plenty of people in the Republican party advocate diplomacy with Iran.
Also, it was a breach of decorum on the part of our boy king. You don't accuse the other party's leadership of being Hitler appeasers on foreign soil. Could you imagine the uproar from the GOP if someone made a remark like that against Bush on foreign soil? You'd never hear the end of it.

Joe Klein: Isn't it possible that Obama is talking about meeting with Iran's actual leader...?
It doesn't make any difference to the right-wingers, Joe; it's all One Big Enemy.
Could it be that the neocons want to associate Obama with the relatively powerless, Israel-hating Ahmadinejad for other reasons?
Yes. They think that what they perceive as a lack of foreign policy experience and tepid support for Israel's right wing on Obama's part are his greatest weaknesses...Not that they can really back up that assertion, or show McCain to be anything but a self-contradicting prevaricator...
Is it possible that such sophisticated foreign policy thinkers as Bill Kristol...don't understand that Ahmadinejad is spewing hate mostly to draw (Iranian) public attention away from his dismal economic record?
Kristol probably thinks that the animosity displayed in professional wrestling is real as well.
Do these brilliant strategic thinkers--starting with George W. Bush...
I'm guessing that's sarcasm...right, Joe?
..worry that their over-the-top rhetoric only serves to empower the mullahs and assorted cave-dwelling extremists by making the Great Satan into a bellicose cartoon in the eyes of the Islamic world?
Demonization of the Other is a tool for gather ing power...These 'brilliant strategic thinkers' don't worry too much, because conflict is largely desirable and profitable if you happen to be sitting in the right spot.
Indeed, whom do we think Hamas and Hezbollah and Ahmadinejad are really supporting in the 2008 election--the candidate who increases their street cred by demonizing them, or the candidate who increases our street cred by proposing talks?
That question could go either way - either the way you've stated it, Joe, or:
"the candidate who increases their street cred by recognizing and legitimizing them, or the candidate who increases their domestic street cred by proposing military action?"
I'm not really caring which candidate Ahmedinijad and Hamas supports; what matters is domestic support for a candidate, especially one with sane foreign policy positions that work for America as a whole.
Finally, are talks capitulation?
Reagan talked to Gorbachev, Nixon to Red China, Clinton and Bush '43 to South Korea, Bush (through Condi Rice) to Syria...I, for one, welcome the Soviet-Chinese-Communist-Korean-Authoritarian-Islamofascist-Terror-Sponsoring masters that replaced the US government in the 1970's, 80's, 90's, and again in this new century.
Sheesh.
Why is it okay for McCain to say one thing in Davos and the exact opposite in the 2008 presidential campaign?
It's not okay, but most media types don't make a habit of calling McCain on his contradictory BS.

Interesting that the MSM was in such an uproar yesterday, questioning the temerity of Bush to dare criticze Obama on foreign soil. CNN went nuts. Today Morning Joe had only critics of Bush on the air. Why did everyone jump to the conclusion that Bush was talking about Obama? Even Obama came to that conclusion. The president must have struck a nerve.
Posted by CMR | May 16, 2008 11:46 AM
To add to the discussion, I want mention the importance of leverage. Chamberlain did not have it when compared to Nazi Germany. Had Britain's Army been considerably more powerful, he could have been effective negotiating with Hitler and would not have felt the pressure to appease him. In this case, we have a great deal of leverage over Hamas and Iran (diplomatically, economically, militarily) and, therefore, negotiation could be very beneficial. By refusing to talk, Bush has squandered this leverage and missed out on real opportunities to make us safer limit the regional violence. Of course, the Iraq Study Group advocated negotiation 18 months ago.

Doug_13: What, exactly, is wrong about the statements made by Bush in a speech to the Israeli Knesset?
Numerous things, not the least of which was that the president of the United States made a speech sounding like he was kissing up to a foreign country's parliament.
Are they in keeping with Israel's official policy of not negotiating with terrorists?
When did the US outsource its Middle East foreign policy to Israel?
Were there any factual errors in regards to the history mentioned by the president?
The conflation of diplomacy with appeasement, for one.
Are those criticizing the statements offering any examples of how dialogue with terrorists, or the states that support them, have been successful in reducing terror or discouraging terrorism support?
There are plenty of examples offered, but you either aren't looking or don't want to see or hear them.
Were any names offered as examples of appeasers?
*sighs*
Dubya stated that if you disagreed with his stated policy of nonnegotiation - a policy which his administration has not held itself to - then you would let the forces of evil walk all over you. He's attacking a group of people, not individuals who can be named.
So, why is it that Obama and the Dems are in such an uproar over this speech?
Because part of Dubya's speech is a falsehood, delivered to a foreign government, in order to score political points back home.
I suspect that they realize that their position on diplomacy with terrorists and terrorist states is not defensible and so have gone on the attack.
And you would be very, very wrong about that, Doug.

Isn't it kind of funny that McCain is accusing Obama as being an appeaser when the Iraqi government, which we are shelling out billions a month to support, does not seem to have a problem with wanting a relationship with Iran.....and Bush and McCain have no problem with that or apparently no influence over??...HMMMM
