Is Jon Stewart a Journalist?
No, you say? Then why, in a survey last year, was he ranked one of the most admired journalists in America? (I know, I know -- many of you think "admired journalist" is a contradiction in terms). A lot of Americans get their news, or a portion of it, from Stewart and Colbert (and Leno, Letterman and O'Brien). But how does The Daily Show rate as a news program? The excellent folks at the Project for Excellence in Journalism examined just that question in a study released today. Check it out.

First Jay, jealous?
ok sorry for the snark
anyhoo:
# Republicans in 2007 tended to bear the brunt of ridicule from Stewart and his crew. From July 1 through November 1, Stewart’s humor targeted Republicans more than three times as often as Democrats. The Bush Administration alone was the focus of almost a quarter (22%) of the segments in this time period.
# The lineup of on-air guests was more evenly balanced by political party. But our subjective sense from viewing the segments is that Republicans faced harsher criticism during the interviews with Stewart. Whether this is because the show is simply liberal or because the Republicans control the White House is harder to pin down.
I'd really be curious how this compares to umm, I don't know, Fox Cable News, which touts that is a news organization and is supposed to be unbiased. Just a thought.

Jay, OT, but in the past you questioned both John Edwards and Fred Thompson's decisions to run for president because either the candidate (Thompson) or his wife (Edwards) has cancer. What about John McCain? As you know, he is a three time cancer survivor (and has the scar to prove it). Given that history and his age (he would turn 80 in office were he elected twice), the risk of recurrence is high. So will you be consistent and question his judgement?

Paul Dirks is right. There are many admired journalists.
The problem is there many more who are lazy, shallow and/or hooked on themes spoon-fed by the right wing noise machine. And by lazy, I don't mean they aren't spending hours gossiping via the phone or email with their colleagues for the group-think prespective; I mean actual independent analysis, followup and consistency.
You may or may not recognize yourself in that category. Certainly TIME has had its share of ridiculous articles.
The Daily Show is funny because it is accurate.
Sad truths are always the funniest jokes. Republicans are easy fodder because so much of what has occurred over the past 12 years or so is a sad truth.
Posted by Egilsson | May 8, 2008 4:19 PM
A common misperception of TDS and TCR is that they are making fun of politicians. To some extent they are but that misses the primary target of their ridicule - the media. They are not journalists, they are media critics. And given the incestuous relationship between politicians and media figures it could not come at a moment too soon.
Posted by Terrapinion | May 8, 2008 4:23 PM
I think this line in the Pew Study sums it up best:
"In addition, The Daily Show not only assumes, but even requires, previous and significant knowledge of the news on the part of viewers if they want to get the joke."
Having said that, the show seems a little "off" to me since the Writer's Strike ended. It used to be standard viewing in our house, but now it just depends ...

On the whole Stewart's serious interviews are better than most because he actually listens to the response.
Something the most other cable news people almost never seem to do.
Posted by Paul-no not that one | May 8, 2008 4:30 PM
I'm with Dirks calling BS on that one, Jay. McClatchy's work on our being lied into a war is widely admired, as is Charlie Savage and Walter Pincus. Nothing but praise for the Walter Reed stories, and, of course you're aware of the fine journalistic work that Josh Marshall did on the US Attorneys story.
Moreover, if you've actually been reading the comments here, you have to have noticed that people here, by and large read the story and base the comments on whether the story is admirable or not. Karen's very nicely written summary of Clinton's mistakes is being praised by both Obama and Clinton partisans because it's a really good analysis, with a nice bombshell attached.
Even Joe Klein, who had built up quite a negative brand in the blogosphere has his good work is noted.
Hackery we call out, yes. Derision for attending a party thrown by someone you are supposed to be covering, sure thing.
These are substantive, sometimes even thoughtful points we raise. Covering your ears and shouting Dirty Effin' Hippies doesn't make the substance of what we criticize any less.

On the question of "is he a journalist?" I don't see how his work could be considered of lesser quality than Maureen Dowd's who has been awarded a Pulitzer. Nor do I see what makes partisan political operatives like William Kristol, Karl Rove, or, yes, Markos Moulitsas journalistic figures.
The reason for the focus on the Republicans is because they're doing the stupider, more easily satirized things. Colbert has built a whole freakin' program around that particular bit of satire. Dems don't offer enough material.
Just the last few days, you got the wasted Congressman weaving his automobile to his mistress's house, where he's planning to wake their three year old "love child" when he crashes into the hallway. This is comedy gold.
I'm not even gonna get into the guy who asphyxiated himself in a double wetsuit.

Stewart has said that all those college kids wouldn't get his jokes if TDS were really their only source of news. The fairly plain truth is that they, like this old man, get most of their news from the intertubes, and don't have much use for CNN, much less Brian Williams and Charlie "200K" Gibson

When courtiers refuse to tell the plain unvarnished truth in open court or closed court, then the court jester gets a job doing so.
When media's 'critical analysis' for the benefit of the public is not about how X and Y's actions will affect the public but about how X and Y's actions will affect X and Y, then public is forced to consider as better journalists comedians who poke fun at X, Y and media's 'critical analysis'.

Jay, why do you think people believe Jon Stewart to be doing the work of a journalist?
What do you think it is about the general level of work being done in journalism right now that would make people choose Stewart as one o the best of the bunch?
Hmmm...it's a mystery.
And while you are pondering that mystery, you might want to a big shout over to the networks and ask your colleagues why they continue to ignore the Pentagon Propagandists story.

More of an exception rather than a contradiction. I certainly admire for instance Charlie Savage.
I'm of two minds on John Stewart. I think he's personally great. And it's OK to have some mixing of entertainment and news. But in the long run I think it's unhealthy if many people are getting their news primarily from entertainers.

A few things:
Firstly, regarding Daily Show viewers being informed, i'm reminded of that fight Jon Stewart had with Bill O'Reily about which of their audiences were smarter...
Secondly, having recently graduated from college, it doesn't surprise me that we would call him a journalist, considering there was a significant amount of people around me (i'd say at least 60%, probably more) who watched Daily Show/Colbert Report, and could give you a run down of both the jokes and the news they covered the next day. In my demo group, i'd say we see him as a respected journalist and media icon.
Thirdly, he does really good interviews. I mean, yes, he does the fluff interviews, but i get excited when i high profile guest does the show (Obama, Clinton, McCain, Powell, Rice, etc etc) because he asks informed questions and presses for answers.
And lastly, yeah, he makes fun of Republicans because, lets face it, the show leans to the left. But i'd say he's more than willing to go after the Dems as well...theres a quote from Studio 60 that would go well here: "i'd be more than happy to take shots at the Democrats too if one of them would /say or do something/!"
(....my comments today are running long. sorry)

The difference between John Stewart and"real" journalists is that Stewart and Colbert make their fakeness obvious and humorous. In doing so, they usually convery more of the truth than do traditional journalists who spin the truth themselves but adopt a pretense of objectivity that is demonstrably false.
Jay, 2/3 of people didn't think Saddam did 9/11 because of John Stewart....they did because of "real journalists."

I think that it's a problem that Jon Stewart is seen as one of the best journailsts today, and it's for the reason that Javerbaum states in J.J.'s post up there says: It's a statement of the failings of the current media establishment.
The Daily Show, through its humor, actually shows itself to be more critical in approach, mostly because it actually goes out of its way to research, and juxtapose contradictions in a way anyone can see and understand. Current news media often simply takes a statement at face value and leaves it at that.

Posted by ajg | May 8, 2008 5:32 PM
Seriously, who is a bigger comedian, Chris Mathews or Jon Stewart? At least Stewart's comedy is intentional.
As for the subject at hand, "The Daily Show" uses comedy to get at the absurdity and hypocrisies of the media and political elites. Most of the so-called "real" journalists are completely out of touch. After all, many didn't understand Stephen Colbert's legendary Whitehouse Correspondence Dinner routine.
Posted by McCain Fluffer | May 8, 2008 5:36 PM
Yes he's a journalist.
The point where we really crossed this threshold was the absurd Stephanopoulos/Gibson ABC debate where Stewart himself joked they're now doing his job for him.
The Wright-gate media, 24/7 6 day blitz was another example of this.
Stewart is a journalist, because journalists themselves have quit doing their job and lowered themselves to rumor and innuendo. They no longer impartially report the news, but rather report it with a twist focusing on what they want.
That's what's made Stewart a journalist. He does the same thing. Only he's honest enough to admit it.

Ten of the 15 questions in today’s press gaggle focused on Jenna’s wedding.
The White House press corps gave Bush administration spokesman Gordon Johndroe a tough time in today’s press gaggle. Of the 15 total questions asked during the briefing, 10 were regarding the upcoming wedding of President Bush’s daughter Jenna. Here are some of the most hard-hitting of the bunch:
– Is Barbara there already?
– We’re all concerned about getting some kind of a readout after the event. Do you expect us to get anything?
– Was 41 on board today?
– Is he going to be doing his normal activities down at the ranch this weekend, since there’s this big affair — like, is he going to go — probably do the exercise and the chopping of the cedar and all that stuff, or is that pretty much on hold this weekend?
– Are they — is the Bush family hosting a rehearsal dinner since — with the Hagers?
– What is [Bush] going to do today?

Posted by Cincinnatus | May 8, 2008 6:29 PM
Jay, unfortunately the answer is yes, as others point out, by default. I watch TDS M-TH and local news on Friday. The Friday topics are fires, auto accidents, visiting network TV stars, restaurant reviews, movie reviews, sports, weather, and for politics: Rev. Wright and how much he hurts Obama.
If I want to hear John McCain directly, I have to watch the Daily Show. The rest of the media seems to focus on straight talk and BBQ. What has Swampland done lately that compares to the TDS interview of McCain?
Jon Stewart is not a tough interviewer. I would like to see more frankness ala Tucker Carlson and the southern guy (I forgot the name) who brought little boots for Jon Stewart's child. However, if Stewart was consistently frank he wouldn't get any right-wing guests at all and fewer left-wing guests. His guests expect Tim 'off the record unless given permission' Russert-type journalism.
Posted by Deggjr | May 8, 2008 6:38 PM
I have a piece of paper that says I'm qualified to commit journalism, and I say Jon Stewart imparts more truth about public affairs than the great majority of those who claim journalist status. The fact that he's funny on purpose while doing it differentiates him from (a) those who regurgitate what they've ben spoonfed by parties with agendas, (b) the blowhards who think THEY'RE the story and (c) the local hairdos who think news = fire engines.

"A good deal of the news, however, is also absent from The Daily Show. In 2007, for example, major events such as the tragic Minneapolis bridge collapse were never discussed. And the shootings at Virginia Tech, the most covered story within a given week in 2007 by the overall press, received only a cursory mention."
Here, for all those journalists to dense to comprehend, is the future of all intelligent news:..STOP...CHASING...AMBULANCES...!
We, the people, are sick and tired of your spending HOURS of time reporting on:

What kryptic said: "The Daily Show, through its humor, actually shows itself to be more critical in approach, mostly because it actually goes out of its way to research, and juxtapose contradictions in a way anyone can see and understand. Current news media often simply takes a statement at face value and leaves it at that."
That's exactly right. What Stewart (and Colbert in a very different way) offer is clarity, the truth behind the words. And memory, as in what did some clown say last week, and last year (which the msm seems generally incapable of doing). And perception, as in the amazing piece on how the war in Iraq can be viewed as a success if we just look backwards in time. It is impossible to watch that clip and not understand precisely what has happened.
http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=164644&title=iraq-the-first-5-years
And,as other have said above, Stewart's interviews are among the best because he is prepared, asks intelligent questions on real issues (as opposed to Russert's often merit less "gotcha" questions), and is generally respectful of his guest. His second half of his McCain interview the other night was very pointed. After noting polls find that McCain has a bigger problem with his ties to Bush than Obama has with Wright, he asked: “Will you take the opportunity to repudiate and denounce President Bush?”
Is he a journalist? Stewart says, vehemently, no. But a lot of knowledgeable people, including Bill Moyers during his fine interview with Stewart, say yes. Whatever. He brings a rare clarity to these confusing times.
Posted by wvng | May 9, 2008 8:55 AM
On Stewart's interviews- he's fine to good interviewing politicians and political hacks, even male entertainment figures.
But put a hot girl next to him, and he literally falls to pieces. I'll never forget the Jennifer Love Hewitt interview from a few years back. She literally said it was the worst interview she'd ever had. I was personally mortified as well.
But I still love the guy.
Posted by Piper | May 9, 2008 1:17 PM
I like my entertainment to contain some political news--it helps relieve the frustration! Actually, the book interviews on The Daily Show are the most valuable part, to me. And, to top off my admiration, Stewart made a serious comment (one), that Hillary Clinton was one of the nicest people they'd ever had on the show. Which brings up a slight change of subject. I began blogging as part of my support for Sen. Clinton, and was very surprised at the level of malice in Sen. Obama's supporters' comments, and the real disdain they express toward Sen. Clinton and her supporters.
Usually, people who are winning become more generous and patient toward those who are running behind. So, what is the explanation for Obama's fans' continuing hostility? Two possibilities occurred to me: (1) they want revenge, or (2) they are generally angry, 'superior' people who cannot admit they could possibly be wrong. There is little evidence for (1). For example, there are no reports of hostile incidents between Obama supporters and opponents in the community, nor of hostile acts against individual opponents. That leaves (2), as far as I could see, that these bloggers are generally so sure that they are right that they cannot even listen to another point of view. Sounds a little like Bush neo-conservatives, doesn't it?
Sen. Clinton's bloggers are much fewer in number, and usually seem to be speaking moderately, in a "let us reason together" mode. This may be because we are older, and have learned through hard experience that we will not always be right, and to respect others' views because we may learn something--and, it is the courteous thing to do. We live better lives when we make friends as much as possible, instead of enemies. This is a compliment to Sen. Clinton, I believe, and to her 'solutions focused' leadership, which is why I am voting for her.
Obama's call for positive campaigning does not seem to have affected his blogging followers to a significant degree. What kind of leadership is this? In terms of attracting this type of followers, or followers who communicate in a disdainful manner about their opponent, I am reminded of Sen. Obama's comments to his San Francisco donars which many working class Americans found elitist and offensive. Birds of a feather flock together.

With Age is wisdom you need to read this :
and keep reading this over and over again until it sinks in
The Forgotten Black Voice
I have been watching, listening, thinking and contemplating this seemingly endless turn of events. I try never to get involved with issues that are political in nature…there are too many extraneous variables, and people often change horses in the middle of the stream; if they think that horse will win!
So, I just want to set the record straight from “my” perspective regarding the Obama issue. These are my views based on my experiences; my interpretation of events; and my social experiences. Of late it seems that to stay in good standing with people, and groups you have to fall inline or suffer the consequences. I will do neither and will verbalize what I feel I must…That is my right!
First of all I am not part of that “large black vote” that follows Obama like rats in a maze, simply because he is black. I have listened to his positions on issues and noted his effective method of communicating with people, but after reviewing is credentials it was clear he does not bring the stuff to be president; that should be obvious to most people. From my perspective I have not heard enough details as to how he will create “change” and make everything right in the world. He speaks well, and is likeable enough, but is not a person qualified to be president of this country. It’s starting to look like I am the only one who sees this.
I am a sixty year old black guy that is really black, and really did come up the rough side of the mountain…I was there! I have watched this bi-racial guy suddenly become black when he needed to be. I have set in front of my TV and listen to him tell me what black folks think…I have heard him elaborate on what the average white person thinks…I have listen to him imply that the general population of Black Clergymen preach a fifty year old message of hate, vengeance, and stupidity. I have sit and watched till I can not take any more. Here is one man that stands and will say this is not true…maybe the only one.
As I look at this virtual circus many things pass through my mind. Where are all the young people whose parents are from different racial/ethnic backgrounds? The same ones that agued with census people a short time ago against putting them in one or the other “racial category” when in fact they were neither, but a combination of both-remember? Why won’t they speak up now? Should they not be arguing that Obama is not black…where are they? Based on their position he should be called “Bi-racial” or “Multi-racial, if my memory serves me right.
Also, the youth of this country have not shown they are responsible in making good decisions in the last thirty years. They are ours, we love them, but I am not about to trust their judgment in matters as important as this. They want “change” and so does a large segment of this society; the polls show that. However, some of us are not willing to have change at any cost! What exactly is this “change”?
Being black I would love to be present and accounted for when we elect our first Black President. The issue here is I want this person to be black, but qualified. There are several reasons but I will only give two here. First of all this will be the most powerful position in the world. Secondly, having a non-qualified black person in the oval office would give naysayers ammunition to say ‘I told you so’ when he messes up…they would love that. I could go on and on with this…but I won’t.
Moreover, I have been shocked at the number of blacks that showed up at the polls and voted for a man with such sparse credentials. One reason I am shocked is we have been known not to vote; the record shows that. Listening to chatter here in there it seems the majority did this simply because he his black- they think. Listening to his Pastor and others talk, you would think that he is black. Being a black person goes beyond physical characteristics, and verbal rhetoric; one must live the experience. In spite of the verbiage of Rev. Wright and Obama, I don’t think Barack had to worry about being caught in life threatening situations where only one’s blackness could put them. Black men and women who have lived a life of blackness understand where I am coming from with this statement. We had no one from the other side of the family to come to our recue…can you dig it!
As for the Rev. Wright, that was a shame and disgrace to the pulpit AND TO MOST BLACKS. It is hard to believe this country set in front of their TVs and let Obama convince them this is par for the course. It is not in my opinion! I am a guitarist with a gospel group, and we have been singing and playing in many churches for many years. I also am a social science instructor…I have listened well to messages brought to congregations at churches at which we perform. This is particularly true when issues of race, ethnicity, and culture have come up. The junk I heard from Wright is not something I have heard at any of the many of churches I have played over the years. Certainly on occasion, ministers speak of things gone by to let the folks know how far we have come. The emphasis being on how far we have come… If white America believes this we really have a problem…if you have allowed this wordsmith to send you down guilt-river, shame on you. This is not typical of what we are taught at our spiritual institutions. Black America knows better and should speak out and say so.
Much has been said about what voters will do if Obama is “cheated” out of the nomination (seems he also feels he is the anointed one). However, little is said about what Clinton supporters will do if she is “cheated”. There had better be some thought given to that. The fact is the ones voting for Clinton is the ones likely to show up to vote in November…Now remember you heard that first from me.
Finally, it has been my observation that although we still have pockets of racial problems, we have come a long way. Yes, we have further to go, but we find ourselves farther a long the road to equality than we use to be. I made up my mind years ago I do not need anybody to speak for me including Mr. Obama. He has not run the race; he is not in a position to be a voice for all black people, particularly this one. I suspect there are white people out there that feel the same…but like many blacks are scared to say it. I have lived the life of a black person. I well know the challenges we face, and have faced. In spite of the trials and challenges that faced me in my youth I was proud of this country, even when it was racially torn…As a child in elementary school, the second thing I was required to do in the morning (after prayer) was to pledge to the flag of the U.S.A. This was a 100% black school in the heart of the 5th ward in Houston…it seemed the right thing to do. I taught my children this; I now teach my two grandsons this. And guest what, I was not unique. It is not perfect, but this society is all we have to work with.
So, in closing let me make it clear all black folks are not on the Obama train. Some people black and white need to see a road to change, not just words about what is wrong with this country. The Rhetoric I have heard from Obama and Wright is taking us back; not forward. This guy refuses to go back…that’s not the change I want!
Now these are only the rambling thoughts of one black man, and I have probably made several grammatical errors as I am writing fast and I am full of thoughts. However, I have written what is in my heart…I have tried to set the record straight.
