I'll Get You and Your Little Indie Band, Too!
I've seen various attempts to discount the astounding 75K turnout for Obama in Portland last week, but none have the charming daffiness of this one, from rightwingy Newsbusters. It's main thesis? Obama didn't draw that huge crowd, indie darling gothic twee rockers The Decemberists did. Of course! Why, that band has filled concert venues with as many as 3000 seats on a regular basis and has sold literally thousands of albums! And that's why, of course, Obama is vetting Colin Meloy for veep. This Obama kid? Ha. What's a quarter of billion dollars in donations next to 3 and a half stars in Pitchfork?
The reason this super-group slipped underneath the radar? Well, if this is Newsbusters, it must media bias. Indeed, "[b]y ignoring the free concert, the Times and other outlets made it appear that 75,000 people were drawn only by Sen. Obama's considerable charisma." Instead of, you know, by sly allusions to Irish poetry and
South American giants.
The headline Newsbusters deems appropriate is full of Oniony dead pan goodness: "Free Concert by Popular Band Preceded Obama’s Big Rally." Also, Area Man Totally Planning on Voting This Time.

this might be my favorite swampland post ever. and I -loved- picaresque.
I used to live in Portland. I think it's cos we're a bunch of godless heathen liberals with a great public transit system, and waterfront park is lovely-awesome in the start of the summer.

Please let these people get back to a vastly outnumbered minority in Congress, so that their incessant whining might at least make some kind of sense.

From Wikipedia: "Named both in reference to the Russian Decembrist Revolt (which may explain its use of the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at many concerts)..." Lovely.
I wonder if they played, "Sixteen Military Wives." The video depicts a bully named "Henry Stowecroft" (Kissinger and Brent?) representing the United States in a grade school model United Nations who declares war on Luxembourg. I kid you not when I tell you the video begins with the bully putting on a flag pin. ...
UPDATE: Looks like the Decemberists can pack them in for free concerts. In a show in Millennium Park in Chicago, one review said 10,000; a diary by one of the band members speculates 20,000. Again, Obama has shown time and again that he can pack crowds into arenas, and he can take pride in the 75,000+ that showed up Sunday. But a free concert by local stars helps...

I have to ask: when Time hired Wonkette, didn't they put any limits in place in order to avoid their august-to-some publication from being turned into a sewer? I don't really see any benefit from this either; if they want lots of hits they could "feature" JNS a bit more, or they could do real reporting for a change, or they could say something insightful for a change. Instead, all we get is lies from JoeKlein and childish echo-chambering from AMC, someone who is self-admittedly not a real reporter.
I also have to wonder how the other supposed real reporters here feel about sharing the stage with someone like Wonkette, especially considering that she's supposedly in a position of authority.
As for this the latest example of Wonkette's inanity, perhaps she might consider pointing out that they're a local band, their most-viewed vid on YT has over 400,000 views and, most importantly of all, few other news sources appear to have mentioned what else was involved in drawing the crowd.
It's certainly not surprising that Time would just wants hacks, what is surprising is that they'd give a sinecure to one with so little talent.

my god, if he had the fiery furnaces open there would have been 170,000 because they are even less well known than the decemberists. see, if in the indie world, to be almost famous is better than fame. and to be cool, well, you have to know the latest popsicle flavor...therefore, more people....duh

...and don't forget, the weather was sunny and in the 80's. So: 1) God's shilling for Obama, and the next hurricane is going to waste Portland, and 2) to make a "fair and balanced" comparison to a McCain rally, you have to subtract 2000 attendees per degree. Lessee, that means that the McCain rally in St Paul in February, divide by 2, subtract 3, carry the 1....

I like the fact that these fine folks mention the fact that they are named after the Decemberist Revolt but not that the revolt took place in 1825 not 1917. It had nothing to do with the Bolshevik Revolution.

I suppose the fact that neither the media nor Senator Obama's disciples had mentioned The Decemberists, an indy band based in Portland, Oregon, performed a free concert at his rally, attracting ~75,000 people, might explain the fallout to hearing the news. And, after hearing the news this band performed, for free, perhaps people conducted further inquiry, and learned the Senator and his minions had arranged this concert, which was advertised on his web site, and intentionally manipulated this information so as to bamboozle the rest of us into believing their candidate was still viable.

Counter to your implication that The Decemberists are some "little indie band", they have a significant following. The fact that they appear to be unknown by Time has no bearing on the band's success and popularity, especially in their hometown. It's worth noting here that, in much the same way that thousands of blogs and other forms of competition have reduced Time's readership, in the age of iTunes and MP3s, the Decemberists can be a successful, even influential band, uknown to much of the country. Is the question, "Would 75K people have attended the rally minus The Decemberists' appearance?" worth asking? Probably not. Historically, it was the job of the media to provide readers with the facts, enabling them to make their own decisions. However, this belief strikes me as dated. In the future, please provide readers with the points you decide are salient and we’ll believe whatever you say. In this way we can do away with those nasty disagreements archaically referred to as contrasting viewpoints in a functioning democracy. There must be a more succinct way of summarizing this new directive. If only I could find the word for it. It's on the tip of my tongue, starts with an "f", and has to do with "an aggressive repression of opposition." Bummer. Can't place it.

All of you in here are missing the most important piece of information here:
Every single fan of the Decembrists is a Barack Obama supporter. Literally, every single one. The Venn diagram of their fan bases looks like concentric circles. Wondering how many Decembrists fans were drawn to a Barack Obama event is like wondering how many Yankees fans were drawn to a baseball game.
I also highly suggest to all the old people here, scouring the Internet for statistics about The Decembrists, to stop talking about music in general. Or at least any music that came after "Rumours."

And the same day, Bill Clinton drew 1,200 to a crowd just an hour south, in Salem. I live in Silverton, a town of 9,000 just 15 minutes from Salem, and we draw more than 1,200 people to a high school football game.
Call it what it is: the Decembrists were icing on the cake. I think the results of our primary proved that. About 58% of people voted Obama over Clinton. The Decemberists were conspicuously absent on my ballot....

this latest "outrage" from the right is the stupidist thing they've come up with yet.
i'm a huge decemberist fan [and i'm 59]. as far as i can tell their first album with real national distribution sold about 200,00 copies total and their last tour had them playing in venues in the 15 hundred to 2,000 range.
to put that 400,000 youtube views number in perspective, it's not uncommon for a music video to get 5 million views.
