Hillary's Bizarre RFK Comment

Though she has now apologized for that very strange and tasteless comment to the Argus-Leader, this was not the first time she's said it. This from her interview with TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel, published March 6:

TIME: Can you envision a point at which--if the race stays this close--Democratic Party elders would step in and say, "This is now hurting the party and whoever will be the nominee in the fall"?

CLINTON: No, I really can't. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.

Her excuse now is that the Kennedys have been "much on my mind these days" with the illness of Senator Edward Kennedy, but that doesn't explain what brought it to mind more than two months ago.

UPDATE: H/T to commenter Elvis Elvisberg, who notes that even the reference to her own husband's campaign was wrong. Bill Clinton's primary race was effectively over in March.

UPDATE2: Last night on NewsHour, Mark Shields pointed out something else that is misleading about Clinton's comparison of this race to 1968. RFK's candidacy was not a long, drawn-out one, as you might believe from Clinton's suggestion:

MARK SHIELDS: I think it was, at the best, totally reckless. I mean, her history is absolutely faulty. Robert Kennedy's first primary, Ray, was in May 7th of 1968. He was murdered four weeks later. She's talking about a long campaign.

This campaign began the first week in January. She's still talking about June. So, I mean, it's faulty there.

Here's the text of RFK's March 16, 1968 announcement speech, which came only after the New Hampshire primary earlier that month (how late that seems now) in which Eugene McCarthy came surprisingly close to beating LBJ. This is how RFK explained his decision to enter the race so late:

The remarkable New Hampshire campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy has proven how deep are the present divisions within our party and within our country. Until that was publicly clear, my presence in the race would have been seen as a clash of personalities rather than issues.

Honestly I am stunned that this has become a major issue.
Karen, are you now implying that she believes or really meant that Obama will be assassinated?

Jamesryan:

Here is what she said in April

"But I also think it's still early, I mean everybody is so focused on where we are right now, I, I, guess I remember in June of '92 that's when Bill really wrapped up the nomination, the middle of June after the California primary. Um, You know, I remember very well what happened in the California primary in 1968 as Sen. Kennedy won that primary.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/24505208#245052...

She said she just brought it up because ted kennedy was in the news and her mind was on the Kennedy family but she also brought it up in April.

I don't think she meant it in a sinister way but this isn't the first time she has brought it up. Another bosnian case of bad memory.

attaturk:

It was a gaffe, she clearly is not as diabolical as some of her critics would make her.

But if was a HUGE GAFFE!!!

You simply NEVER bring up stuff like that when you are behind in a contest like this. NEVER!

TeresaKopec:

Would everyone be upset if she had said, "Remember RFK and McCarthy were still in a primary battle in June of 1968 and no one was calling for either of them to get out."

Or would we then get special reports from David Schuster saying, "Just bringing up RFK means that Hillary is hoping that Obama is assisinated."

It would be too hard to believe that she was saying that RFK's primary battle would have gone on a lot longer if he hadn't been unfortunately assinated.

FreeCell:

How is it not a major issue that Hillary Clinton believes she should stay in the race for the nomination on the chance that Barack will be knocked off before the Convention? Simply implying the scenario is completely tasteless.

Found by Googling "bill clinton campaign 1992 tsongas brown". Her staffers should have thought better of looking up whether there were any primaries held in June 1992 for a talking point that's so easily debunked.

four legs good:

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.

I saw Bobby Kennedy the day he died. I can't believe she's brought it up. Again.

Nice catch to both Karen and Elvis.

stuart_zechman:

Unbelievable.

You've managed to insert a fully Russert-compliant trivial gotcha moment in there, as if that had anything to do with whether or not she holds assassination-type ill will towards Barack Obama.

Nice.

BrendanB:

I don't think anyone is saying that she really thinks he'll be assassinated.

It's just a strange and classless remark.

I vote for the Freudian slip theory. Is there any reason Hillary wouldn't want to hold out at all costs in case "something happened" to Obama.

The Vince Foster conspiracy theorists will love this "gaffe".

Barbara2:

I thought this tag line in her apology was in poor taste considering what she was apologizing for.

"My view is that we have to look to the past and to our leaders who have inspired us and give us a lot to live up to, and I’m honored to hold Senator Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate from the state of New York and have the highest regard for the entire Kennedy family."

Elvis Elvisberg Author Profile Page:

Stuart: No one thinks she has assassination-style ill will towards Obama.

Her point, stated in its least objectionable form, is that "hey, primaries go on till June all the time, Bill didn't even win till then, and 1968-- well, that wasn't decided till late either."

But Bill had essentially won by March. Tsongas, running low on money, withdrew earlier than had been expected, saying, "the alternative was to play the role of spoiler... That is not what I'm about. That is not worthy. I did not survive my ordeals in order to be the agent of the re-election of George Bush."

And primaries are very, very different now from how they were in 1968. That was an unusual year for many, many reasons, including the fact that assassinations don't happen very frequently.

It was a gaffe in the service of an argument that is historically dubious. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well...not no one:

Gotta disagree with you stuart, it really did sound to me on first read that she was hoping someone would kill Obama. Second and third read come out the same way. Pretty much disgusting and beyond shameful to hope the other guy dies. Worse to be thinking about it so much that accidentally let it slip out loud.

Posted by Sean DeCoursey | May 23, 2008 4:43 PM

The man has been getting death threats and its not out of the realm of possibility for some nutcase to take Hillary's words as an okay to harm Obama. Especially after she has moved every goal post and thrown Obama under the bus numerous times in what is turning out to be a counter productive all out effort to win this race. Its also an insult to the Kennedy family.

I'm not disagreeing with your analysis, I haven't actually looked into it.

It was a gaffe in the service of an argument that is historically dubious. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not sure that Obama wouldn't be able to say exactly the same words, and not have the kind of feeding frenzy we're witnessing right now go on.

I object to media character analysis narratives creating double standards, as I object to the absurd muck-raking parsing of language into which coverage has devolved.

Can't you just see Olbermann puffed up with importance tonight, righteously shouting "Have you no shame, Senator Clinton? Have you no shame? Drop out of this race now, Senator! Have the decency to leave the political stage immediately! Madam, please just shut up and go away! Good night and good luck."?

It doesn't sound like a gaffe; it sounds like a witch-hunt, to me. Anyway, thanks for your non-insulting response. I'm certainly not disgusted with you.

shall:

I've been concerned about this for some. As a retired law enforcement officer I've questioned untimely deaths of people near the Clinton's. I believe it is time for the SD to take her out of the race. First time in near 20 years that I voted for a Dem. If Clinton is on the Dem ticket, it will be the last.

cfaller96 Author Profile Page:

I would also add that while I believe this is nothing more than a gaffe, it is a gaffe which perhaps exposes the inanity/illogic of Hillary Clinton's brain.

I mean, her point was that primaries frequently go into June, so there's nothing wrong with her staying in until June. Yeah, and...?

The idea that somehow Hillary thought she could strengthen her argument by adding a little "color" to her description of the 1968 convention is a little ghoulish and most likely unfair to Senator Clinton, IMO. But if that wasn't the reason behind her "colorful" description of the 1968 primary, what was the reason?

And then we get back to the conclusion that none of us really want to make: that, objectively, Hillary Clinton as a politician and as a Democrat is mediocre, at best, and thus is ill-suited for the presidency. The Dems avoided a catastrophe by nominating someone else.

Cincinnatus:

Not a word of apology to Obama....utterly classless.

honey:

I cannot believe the stupidy of some of you people, Hillary was asked a question and she answered -- there is nothing wrong with what she said, The primaries do sometimes go into June and what is the rush with wanting her to quit and that has been going on for so long. I am totally disgusted that people like Wolf Blitzer or whoever decided this would be the topic of the day, they are really pushing their opinions into this election-- Jack Cafferty with his comment of Hillary having foot and mouth disease is so much worse than Hillary answering a question she was point blank asked about. Guess what folks what she said is true, and I and many other see nothing wrong with her saying what she did and I wish Hillary would stay up and tell them to get off her case, Oh yes Obama told everyone to lay off Michelle (the not proud american) and yet if Bill Clinton said one word in defense of Hillary it would just be so awful -- you are nothing but a whinning bunch of babies - grow up and talk about what is important not garbage.

4mccain:

Pleeeeze!! The media needs to get a life. never would I vote for Clinton or Obama, but to take her remarks and make them out to be something sinister is so ridiculous! She certainly is being discriminated against because she is a woman--but, we SURE can't say anything about Obama, because he is black---so unfair and stupid, stupid!! I sure am glad John Mccain will be our next president; someone who has fought for this country and suffered for it.

Preston:

Karen, just to be clear, it should be noted that HRC did not actually "apologize" for her thoughtless (and, as Elvis has pointed out) inaccurate remarks. What she actually said was "I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever." It is quite a stretch to read this "regret...if" formulation as an apology to Obama, to the Kennedy family, or to anybody else. She seems to have a problem with the word "sorry".

Alexa II:

Cincinnatus
Nice try! You know very well if she apologized to Obama that would be an admission that she's hoping he'll be killed. That isn't what she said. Using the word "assassination" was in poor taste and was hurtful to the Kennedy's.

nickzi:

Right, so first we had Tuzla, with a flagrant, brazen and desperately defended falsehood, more recently we had the imbecilic Florida-Zimbabwe comparison, with its racist undertones. Now we have the reminder that Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, and so Clinton ought not to quit the race.. because.. because what? Guys, you can apologize for Clinton all you want, but you are simply shredding your own credibility. Clinton gets smaller, meaner and less credible as a Democratic candidate the longer this race goes on. It's time to end this nonsense, respect the rules of the race, and rally round the nominee, Barack Obama.

Newswatcher:

Thanks for bringing out the past use of the RFK assassination. I wish you could get more coverage about it. If he picks her for a vice president, he'd better invest in comfortable full body armor! Many pundits on MSNBC are defending her saying it was just a poorly worded statement due to fatigue and other idiocy. Too bad the pundits couldn't be bothered to find the transcript of the bittergate comment from Obama and put it into context!

gpneil:

Sen. Clinton could have made the point that several past nominations have not been wrapped up this early in the year without specifically mentioning RFK's assasination. One way those of us old enough to remember such things can remember what year or what time of year something occurred is by placing them in context with major historic events. For example, grandma might say, "Your great-grandpa died in the fall of 1941, because it was just before Pearl Harbor was attacked." CNN ran a script saying "Clinton cites RFK assassination as reason to stay in race." She did no such thing. Other interpretations only show a shallow understanding of the world and past events, or are an attempt by fanatics to destroy anything that might interfere with the Chosen One's becoming president. To Obama backers, I'm still going to vote for your man, but don't push it. Love, Greg.

She's invented her own math, her own reality...etc. Is she waiting for someone to take care of her problem for her? It had nothing to do with the Kennedys in her mind. Honestly, wake up and smell the coffee - finally. How long does it take? I used to support her but she will say and do ANYTHING to get elected. Next female candidate PLEASE. This one didn't pass the smell test.

Midwest Ed:

How about we look at this from 60,000'? She has said this twice. This is not an idle comment, but rather an item that has entered her long term memory cells. As morbid as it may seem, this is probably one of the remaining "opportunity" campaign scenarios on the Hillary & Co. strategic planning "blackboard" that is keeping her in the race. Only the remote, tragic-type scenarios are left on the "board." The only way Hillary can do it is if: (a) Obama drops out of the race, (b) He makes an amazing gaffe, (c) Someone uncovers some REAL dirt from his past, or (d) He is killed. Politics can be ugly. We know Hillary is at the "anything goes" stage. Unfortunate, but true.

I just watched the entire interview and there is NO doubt this remark was rehearsed and had been planned.

It did NOT come as an answer to a simple question. It came as part of a long monologue as to why people want her to leave the race. Clearly this was in her head (used before as we see here), had been discussed and while she may not have meant to say it it is clearly in the front of her mind....we had heard the bit about Bill in 1992 ad nauseum but this new riff was out there for effect for the Supers to try and freeze them for another few weeks.

When you see the snippet on TV I can assure you it was not taken out of context and in fact was injected directly by her as justification for her battling on...

Watch the video yourself.

She used the question to run off a planned riff as she did for several others....

Thank God she did this now. Any VP talk is over.

The lack of an apology to Barack is he real telltale sign of her mindset and the affront to Teddy this week is even worse...but a payback for his support of Barack.

Hillary continues to bring the business of politics to a new low with each day of her campaign. She has lied, distorted, gone negative beyond belief - and said totally outrageous things. It is clear that this is all about Hillary, and very little about the welfare of the people in our country.

I'd say tasteless is about par for the course with her and we are lucky that it all has come out now before we got deeper into her candidacy.

The truth is that she has been an active legislative politician for far less time than Barack Obama, yet she has everyone believing that she has the experience and wisdom for the job. I don't belive that being married to the President for 8 years is to be put on any political resume. I really don't know why no one has called her on that one.

If she does not exit soon and contnues her filthy campaign into the primary she will have tainted the democratic party perhaps beyond repair and in part, the whole enthusiasm toward the new elections. I feel that she is a very selfish and self centered person - I am just shocked at each and every word that comes from her mouth.

chicago:

Here is my issue, this is the second time she has brought up the death scenario which is downright ghoulish, why even say this, there were many other ways to express your point that she should stay in it for a few more weeks, Furthermore, Huckabee said something weird like this too, My word, do they want someone to kill the man? Frankly, up until recently I thought a joint ticket was a good idea but this freaks me out and if I were him I would be a little afraid, after all there are a lot of nut jobs who will take this as permission

Karen:

I am soooooo sick of the media. You have twisted every single word into something that is absolutely nothing. Robert Kennedy, by the way, was WHITE!!! She said absolutely nothing that even hinted that she wanted to stay in with hopes that something would happen to Obama.
We have certainly gone into the Dark, Stupid Age in America. For eight years we have let a President violate the Constitution, basically tell Congress and the Supreme Court to take a flying leap, and the American people have done NOTHING!!! Now we have a complete unknown, who has NO political record to speak of, who can easily say he didn't think the war was right, and would not have voted for it. Well, guess what, he wasn't in a position where he had to make a decision. Sure, I agree that Congress as a whole did not do their job in investigating before voting to support Bush. But we are in Iraq, can't turn the clock back. The economy sucks, and what do you want to do? Put someone in office, who has no experience, who has no credentials to speak of. Actions speak louder than words. Most of you supporting Obama couldn't tell me 10 things about him that qualify him for the Presidency. I am not voting for a party I am voting for the person best prepared to run the nation and take care of the problems we have, and Obama has given me absolutly no evidence that he can handle anything. When I vote, I will write in my choice if it is not there. I will leave the voting booth with a clear conscience.
And for the news media. You are no better than the yellow journalists of the early 20th century.

Senator Obama, nor his campaign has EVER SAID THAT SHE SHOULD DROP OUT!! Yet this is her reference for her comments. That wasn't a gaffe, that was a LIE, LIE, LIE!!!!

the results of the vote challenge by Senator Kucinich is STILL not in. [She went for the pity vote then, just like she is going for it now]

There is a revolving door in her campaign...

Why do you think that so many former supporters have moved to the Obama camp?

Bosnia was a 'straight-up' LIE....
and the MSM let her get way with saying 'perhaps the events were different than I stated and 'I'm no dummy"??? give me a break!!

Why is everyone choosing to ignore the fact that Ohio, Pennsylvania were won MERELY because of the fact that so many 'mindless' voters switched because Limbaugh TOLD them to!!! In a general election, they would NEVER vote for a Democrat!!
It is pure horse manurer to think that this primary would have been over after Nevada if Operation Chaos had not been instigated.

Pennsylvania was a JOKE. Ed Rendell , HID the Obama votes that would have put him over the top.
Why do you think he was able to "find" 17,000 votes 'mistakenly lost' ???
a week after the primary that was split, to give Senator Clinton, just enough votes to take her to 9.5% so that they could claim a 2 digit lead, if you 'round up' the percentage points?
She uses the pity pulpit to get votes, her campaign headquarters is in shambles (Penn), and she is ALWAYS RUNNING OUT OF MONEY!
Why would anyone suggest that she be on the Democratic ticket???

I didn't even vote for Hillary, so I don't need to come to her defense regarding the recent RFK statement, but really, can't she say anything without CNN "making" news out of every comment she makes? Let's exercise some personal and journalistic judgment here and stop "blitzing" the airwaves, Wolf, with hysterical queries and silly suspicions about what candidates are truly meaning by what they say. This speculative approach to news reporting is irresponsible and insane and geared only to tantalizing bored tv viewers! If I were Hillary or her spokesperson, I would tell the media, Obama's campaign people, and viewers at large, "Enough, already!" Instead, every candidate, endorser, and spokesperson resorts to walking on egg shells with each syllable uttered! And, they get trapped into crafting delicately worded apologies to appease an array of politicos, DC insiders, and opportunistic media commentators who have agendas about which most of us could care less! What a waste of time for all -- and an insult to our collective social intelligence. So, let's move on to substantive discussions of issues affecting our children's future.

Geraldine Ferraro? What reality is she in now? A former President's wife who carpetbagged her way into an easy election for Democrats in New York? People, she flat out lied about Bosnia. She has invented completely bogus "I've got most of the popular vote" arguements. She talked down Obama's readyness for office on day one even after the election was already lost. No one is saying she is putting out a contract but the possibility is in her calculus as a reason for staying in. It is at this point the most likely option for her. How low can you go? Many of us were already worried about this and it has been on the national news now twice in the past few weeks. As it relates to his record, I agree its thin and he does have to address the experience issue, but in my estimation he has ran a fine campaign and what does it say about Sen. Clinton that she could not knock a jr. senator with a thin resume out, I could go on and on in terms of why I think he has been successful, but thats not the issue, the issue is what she said reinforces the fear for his safety that has been expressed and she should apologize to him too.

In truth, even after Pennsylvania, there was still quite the question as to whether Clinton could seal the deal. You are so blinded by your righteous indignation that you've ignored an equally grim reality; Senator Clinton, herself,is as much an asassin's target as Obama, as would be anyone who has hatred focused upon them with such unrelenting cruelty. Clean up your take on this, ladies and gentlemen, the desparation to end this comes from the Obama camp with a glare that eclipses any effort on Clinton's part to remain on purpose in her campaign. One final point: Ross Perot ran a 3rd Party campaign in 1992. Clinton demonstrated his ability to respond to a commanding message by co-opting Ross's call for reducing the deficit and it made the difference in the general election. That issue, however, was barely on the Democratic platform until Perot presented it so well.

I know that you are willing to give the country over to a man McCain who has said we could stay in Iraq for 100 years a person who shares almost all of the same views as GWB b/c a person who has the same policy views as your candidate may win you would vote out of spite for McCain, would you continue to support this woman if you knew she secretly hoped for Obama's murder?

Yes We Can...! Yes I am a Obama supported, and as a supported I ask each of you to look at the type of campaign Senator Clinton and McCain are currently waging. We as American's are on the brink of disaster....we need "real change", we need to put this country on the "right track" to a more prosperous future for us all as Americans. I am personally asking each of you bloggers who have voted for Senator Clinton and McCain to come on board and work with us to set a new path to greatness for our country. We need true leadership....we need "real change"! I am asking each of you to believe and work with us to help Senator Obama get to the Oval office and lead this country to a brighter day....In the end the choice is ours, either we choose the road of the past or we embark on the road toward the future. Please choose wisely.

First, she couldn't have mentioned Obama because that would only cement the perception that her assassination reference had anything to do with him. Which it didn't.

What about the pregnant woman who died for lack of health care story she was using? For that matter, what about the whole Bosnia "sniper attack"? It's not like this is the first time she's suffered from faulty memory or foot-in-mouth disease. You'd think she'd be more careful to watch what she says because the media will be all over it, whether it's a faux pax, bad research or a flat out lie.

Reading the thread, I'm wondering how much this is a generational issue. I doubt very much that many of you who are saying this is no big deal were born before, say, 1952. Show of hands please? If you were punched in the gut by those assassintions this is not a minor deal. I am glad that most of you have not experienced it, and I profoundly hope and pray that you don't.

Democrat '08:

Oh My.... She's staying in the race "in case Obama is assasinated?" OMG. A presidential candidate with the morals of Tanja Harding.
EVIL!

chicago:

I agree with Ronnie, someone in her camp really should talk to her, and remind her that there is life after a political campaign, a lot of us had a great deal of respect for her, I was very torn about who I was going to support after Edwards dropped out, on one hand it was clear that Hillary seemed more experienced and had a good grasp of the issues on the other hand I thought and still do that Obama is very inspirational and was very different from the old stuff and he was speaking a message of real change, I went to both websites and was very impressed with both candidates. It was a tough decision but b/c I opposed the war I went with Obama, So, with that said I am not a Hillary hater, I do think that after June 3rd and the meeting on May 31st whoever has the most delegates should be declared the winner and we need to unite behind whoever that person is and her camp needs to address this asap.

TexicoFromMexico:

She is cut out of the same cloth she fought against. Isnt it ironic how much she has become like Dick Nixon.

Susan:

I started watching the election on CNN and reading online in March.

We feel CNN is anti Hillary Clinton. The stories about her are always negative.

Look at Obama. We turned against him after his bitter reamarks to the good people of Pennsylvania.

My gosh......we do not need a president who slams the American people.

And look at his ties with Wright.

But if something comes up with Hillary Clinton, she gets bad coverage.

Why is this, CNN????? Please explain!

Susan MO

beanso:

Hillary really needs to just step out of the race. The longer she stays in the less likely she'll be well thought of. As a woman, me and my suburbanite friends have lost almost all respect for her as a candidate for the White House. Where we all voted for her husband twice, none of us will vote for her once nor do we want her on Obama's ticket as VP. Her credibility suffers from being in too long and she seems to believe that this race was "hers" and belonged to her, alone. Therefore, we feel she's stayed too long, and is now frustrated. This RFK gaffe was Horrible! She should have never insinuated that Sen. Obama may be assasinated. This is how I understood it when I first heard it. There are too many crazies out there who may just try to do that by suggestion. WHY would she even utter that remark? Shame on her... Shame on Hillary..... and Bill cannot come to her rescue anymore. She's TOAST.

ronnie:

Even though I am not a supporter of Mrs. Clinton, she is the wife of one of the most beloved US presidents in history. She herself is a US senator. Come on people. The world is watching this!!! Are we going to allow this to go on. Some one in the Clinton campaign needs to get a grip. I don't want her to go out looking like anything other than a class act. We can't just tear each other up. When you recognize that a person has a problem and you care...you help them!

Radar:

The stories about her are negative because she is negative. You should read what they are saying about her on another news web site. I jokingly call CNN the CLinton News Network because they are so pro Clinton, how can you say they are against her. Anyone who thinks this was just another Clinton mis-speak is so brain washed by the Clinton propaganda machine they need the medicine she should be on. She needs to just go away and I mean all the way away, she should even resign her Senate seat because she is not worthy of the seat that the great RFK once held.

Someone just brought up a CNN bias, when Obama discussed the bitter issue it was covered for 2 weeks, I recall waking up to it at 5 a.m even though millions of people later admitted that they are/were bitter about the economy and do cling to what they feel safe with he repeatedly apologized and said he should not have said it that way, the Rev. Wright issue was wallpapered into our psyche so, the media covers it all constantly, do not whine, believe me, but with all of Obama's mistakes he has NEVER alluded to her death or appearing to be like a swarm of buzzards in the desert waiting for his death, its very disgusting the more I think about it

rabbitgirl:

Hillary meant nothing more or nothing less than the statement. She could've withdrawn, and IF something terrible happens to Obama, she'll be the nominee. Her fact-stuffed brain recalls matters, without the sensitivity of a polished pro like Obama. She is a HONEST GAL.

lceres:

Again, here goes her fuzzy math! In 1968, there were only 9 primaries, and they started in March. In 1992, they started in February, and that was completely different, because Brown got into it so late!

So what is she doing? The only thing that makes sense to me is that she is trying to sabotage Obama so she can say, "See, he wasn't electable after all - I would have won."

Personally, I don't want a third Clinton term, after all the stupid issues we had to go through (remember all the pardons, and removing all the hard drives from all the computers, as well as all the sleezy stuff?). OMG, what will Bill be doing in the White House with nothing to do all day????

It's not that Hillary is a woman - it's that she is a Clinton.

seakiev:

What a horrible, disgusting comment. She only made it worse by not apologizing to Obama, pretending that that reference wasn't even relevant.

Hillary's maniacal determination to win at all costs, her willingness to lie, about Bosnia, about the 'popular vote', and now about her real desire to wait it out just in case the worst case scenario happens to her opponent.....she is a monster.

I can only hope the super delegates now stand up and move to Obama and stop this madness before Hillary destroys the party and any hope they have of winning in November.

Democrat '08:

Please.... winning in case someone is killed? Who thinks like that? Sick!

A Hypothetical Speech by Vice Presidential Candidate Clinton

Thank you for welcoming me here tonight. I know that we are all proud of Barack, who has risen from humble beginnings to such heights--great heights, perilous heights. As you may know, 30% of serious accidents occur from a height of 10 feet or above.

And so we now set out together on our journey--a journey of hope, a journey of change, and yes, a journey of great demands. For the Presidency places great demands on all of those who hold the office--we have seen how amazingly rapidly it can create aging, in the poignant photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was succeeded by Harry S. Truman while still in office.

In this journey, we will put forward our shared goals--of expanded health coverage, against the unexpected and often fatal illnesses that can rob even those citizens that seem the healthiest of their ability to work, even of their lives.

Of protection against unexpected attack on our country, often aimed at those who are placed in the most critical positions to lead this nation. Of conservation of our precious energy resources, without which, even the most powerful of us can wind up stranded in a desert motorcade, without food, water, or wireless reception to contact others for help. Of greater support for culture and the arts--beginning with increased support for our very own Ford's Theatre here in Washington, DC.

Many of you will hear Barack speak later today, from a platform in Norman, Oklahoma--a humble platform, a rickety platform, a platform susceptible to Norman's notoriously strong and unexpected winds. There--god willing--he will tell you of what we hope to accomplish. He will speak of the unity that he and I wish to achieve for this nation, just as Andrew Johnson and Lincoln strove for such national unity. And he will tell you of our wish for change.

Change. An important word. None of us can know the changes that will occur in our lives. None of us can predict what momentous events, what disasters may befall us. A simple damaged left engine turbine stabilizer in a campaign plane. A frayed electrical line dangling, unseen, from a remote access satellite hookup van. A safe, falling, unexpectedly, to the sidewalk from the 8th floor of the Hotel Aldion in Norman, Oklahoma.

And so, we must dedicate ourselves, consecrate ourselves, to reach these most important national objectives today--while we still can. And like Kennedy, Garfield, McKinley, and other Presidents before him, we know that Barack will strive to achieve these goals--in the face of the awesome unknowns that lay before us all.

Thank you.

Wow...Hillary Clinton is almost a would be murderer, evil incarnate.

Why in the hell is she in public office and half of the Democratic Party supports her? Ah, yes because that half are stupid, uneducated, low lives and probably budding murderers.

This is the most absurd reaction and it is an excuse to pressure her to get out. It has been absolutely blown out of proportion and it is being done purposefully. If ANYTHING is calculated is this whole thing that is going on right now, right here.

This campaign has shown a side of the American people that explains so many things. You do manage to take the good things of your country and screw them up...royally.

And by the way, Obama is in absolutely no danger. Please, don't make him a martyr now! This is pathetic. Do you forget who runs Washington? Washington is run so that these things will never happen again. Obama is too much of a politician and a wheeler and dealer. If there were real threats do you think it wouldn't be all over the press? Threats?
People who are REALLY going to change the status quo are in danger, people who are REALLY willing to go against the system are in danger. Mr Obama is part of the system no matter how much stuff comes out of his and his supporters' mouth.
Let's not be fooled, so is Clinton and so is McCain they are just a bit more transparent, that is all.

Go have your pipe dreams at the movies, folks because you really think this is "Mr Smith goes to Washington" don't you? This is not time to be naive, people.

PS...now a days a famous pooch can receive death threats. So get a grip.

People, have you forgotten the drama of the Clinton years? Do you want this again? And don't give me the line that they all do it. Do you remember these scandals completely unacceptable for a past president and first lady:
The Clinton Legacy:
The only president ever impeached on grounds of personal malfeasance
- Most number of convictions and guilty pleas by friends and associates*
- Most number of cabinet officials to come under criminal investigation
- Most number of witnesses to flee country or refuse to testify
- Most number of witnesses to die suddenly
- First president sued for sexual harassment.
- First president accused of rape.
- First first lady to come under criminal investigation
- Largest criminal plea agreement in an illegal campaign contribution case
- First president to establish a legal defense fund.
- First president to be held in contempt of court
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions
- Greatest amount of illegal campaign contributions from abroad
- First president disbarred from the US Supreme Court and a state court
Oh, don't forget how Hillary's campaign manager had to resign a few years back for illegalities. Oh, and don't forget Bill's questionable international dealings that are contrary to America's foreign policy. Oh, don't forget the ongoing lawsuit by Peter Paul accusing the Clintons of illegal fundraising.
These last things explain why the tax returns are at issue. Otherwise, release the returns for years 2000 through 2006. Release 2007 on April 15.
And now Hillary is telling lies do you follow the campaigns enough to recognize them?

My family and I watched Hillary interview with the So. Dakota paper wherein she cited HISTORICAL FACTS about prior presidential campaigns and one of those HISTORICAL FACTS included that Bobby Kennedy was campaigning in June when he was shot. We were taken aback when the Obama campaign issued yet another old politics spin attempting to indicate that Hillary had somehow done somehting wrong via stating a HISTORICAL FACT.

My family and I find Obama and his staff's tactics very disconcerting. When a presidental candidate is demanding that his oppnent apologize for stating a HISTORICAL FACT, our nation needs to be vary wary of such a personality and those that support such an unhealthy, unsafe, and unpatriotic stance. Such antics have absolutely no place in a DEMOCRATIC race and Obama and his staff owe not only Hillary, but this entire nation an apology. Such behavior on the part of the Obamites patently flies in the face of our founding father's values.

Hillary and all citizens need to be FREE to state HISTORICAL FACTS and not have a presidential candidate profane such fact-telling via vain accusations and attempts to crush the very truthful foundations of this brave nation. Shame on the Obama campaign and the news media that has not held him accountable for this violation of one of our most scared rights.

I am glad that she is staying in the race, it is interesting to see how it will play out when the actual votes are cast. I think she needs to high tale it back to wherever she lives and just keep her mouth shut. She has always been about herself and those comments don’t do anything to prove me wrong. They were out of line, offensive and a whole lot more. Super Delegates need to step up and stop prolonging this thing, make a decision already one way or another. Hillary just gets more desperate and explosive as time goes on. She will make things worse a lot worse if this goes to the convention. It’s as if she thinks if I can’t be the nominee well then I don’t want Obama to win either. She needs to grow up already and realize it is not all about her. Being a Clinton does not entitle her to the Presidency. And being tired is no excuse for her apparent misspeaking all the time. What does she think, once in the White House things don’t get easier. She thinks she is so prepared to answer that 3am phone call but apparently not if she doesn’t know what to say out of her mouth when she gets tired.

The excuse that the Kennedys were on her mind doesn't work. If that were the case, at a time when Ted Kennedy has been practically given an illness death sentence is not the time to mention anything about another death in the family. It's okay to accept Hillary's comment as a slip of tongue, even though it was a costly one. My question for all of Hillary Clinton's supporters, including CNN TV crews like Campbell Brown, Lou Dobbs and the rest is: why was it so easy for you guys to accept Hillary's explanation now without making a big of a deal about it and NOT accept Obama's explanation about the so-called "bitter comments" or maybe they are not in anyway related?

I suspect a lot of foul plays. The TV presenters I mentioned above, especially the one that calls himself Lou Dobbs kept bringing it up over and over. When they are confronted about things he's not been handling well, he gets very defensive cos he's "Mr Right"

KKS:

I believe the media coverage of this campaign is going to be discussed in media ethics classes for years to come. The media's twisting of words to smear a candidate has been rampant through out this process. Of course, when it is done in a blog instead of the magazine itself, some are going to say that it isnt really journalism anyway. It is unfortunate that so many are getting their news and information from the blogs though. Then the MSM begins to repeat it because it generates buzz, in turn higher ratings, and in turn advertising revenue. What a shame that the FACTS are no longer reported about one of the most important elections in our time. She was saying that primary's in the past have gone longer than the current one has and NO ONE was ever calling for a candidate to drop out before. And she is right. People in the media and Obama supporters have calling for her to drop out of this race since February, a month and a half after the primaries began! Tsongas dropped out in '92 of his own accord and for his own reasons. No one was trying to force him out in the same manner in which Hillary is trying to be forced out. She referenced RFK because most of us who were around at that time remember that it happened in June and it was during the primary season. The only thing disgusting about it is the twisting of words to make it sound like she was saying something sinister. The media and the bloggers are the ones who made it sinister.

poh123:

I am not sad, Cincinnatus. :) I can't even vote!

Oh hell...maybe he is! Maybe he really is the second coming of Christ or the reincarnation of El Cid...another good film.

Answer: You Don’t. But people like Obama and his child fanatics have no clue: It’s hard-wired into your brain if you have any sense of history and have been impacted by the those times in history.

It would have been disingenuous and inauthentic NOT to have mentioned it in some way. Perhaps the phrasing was a form of ‘inartful’ atuo-pilot but for god’s sakes anyone with any sense of history understands this.

Add to that the overwhelming fatique of endless campaigning, going without sleep for 36+ hours and you too would be human. There's an element of sheer exhaustion at work here under such conditions.
