Bomb Iran?
David Ignatius has an interesting column today, raising the possibility of war with Iran. In the past, Ignatius has shared my skepticism about the possibility that the Administration would jump this shark--the military is very much opposed to it--but what happens if Bush launches a targeted air and special ops strike on the Qods Force/Hezballah training camps in Iran? What if this happens during the fall campaign? I've been busy with the presidential race and haven't kept up with my military, intelligence and regional sources these past few months. But it's time to revisit this issue now. Stay tuned.

We need to be strong and really in the deterrent mode, to not be very predictable.
Doesn't anyone else remebre how the whole theory behind the Iraq invasion was that it would scare the other ME nations into submission to our will?
How many times will we have to continue to repeat the same stupidity before any sense kicks in.

[W]hat happens if Bush launches a targeted air and special ops strike on the Qods Force/Hezballah training camps in Iran?
In a word, war. We already have wars going on in two countries that border on Iran. The idea that we could bomb Iran with hundreds of thousands of troops nearby without a serious risk of escalation into an all-out war is just silly.

It would be beyond stupid to bomb Iran. Sure, they don't have an air force, but that would not be sufficient to contain the blowback.
Our national interests would be severely compromised, to put it mildly, if we took this step.
Our presence in Iraq did not stabilize the region; it had the paradoxically effect of strengthening Iran. Bombing Iran would only stabilize the mullahs ruling Iran.
After 9/11, Bush's approval ratings went to 90%.
There is no reasonable tactical or strategic justification for a military strike.
It's unbelievable to me this is seriously debated.

Didn't Seymore Hersh, who I revere, give a date certain of a campaign this past summer? What happened to that?
It seems like every few months we hear something about the imminent attack. I guess this is good, because I have no doubt this administration would do something this stupid, and they probably are going about every avenue to reach that goal, and any time one is shut down, they go off in another direction, so we have to be vigilant. And those who bought Bush's pre-war hype, this is the opportunity to show there is a learning curve in DC. I can forgive giving Bush the benefit of the doubt back then -- it's all the efforts to cover up that failure since I can't forgive, and the refusal to give up the "sources" and "access" that make this disinformation possible -- so Iran is where one can show they are smarter now, and aware of reality.
So, I'm assuming the constant reports of war are based on efforts employed by Cheney to start war that are shut down, though I haven't heard an explanation for this.

Leaving aside the conceit that David Ignatius apparently agrees there is "a chance of reaching an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement while Bush is in office," I've always been concerned that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was brought in to prepare for war with Iran.
Gen Peter Pace, the previous Chairman, was not renominated due in part to his refusal to fan the flames of war with Iran. Indeed, he cast doubt on Tehran's link to Iraq militias at a time where the administration was clamoring for more war.
Outside of an Acting Chairman in October 1993 -Admiral David E. Jeremiah - there has not been a naval officer in charge since the Reagan administration. What makes the choice of Admiral Michael Mullen the right one for this administration is his consistent insistence from before Day One that he supports an antagonistic stance via Iran. As David Ignatius notes, he has not changed his tune.
I suppose I might have a problem believing that this is anything new, but I'm limited in my knowledge of what other officers above O6 are thinking. Anyone seen anything about how Gen George Casey or others on the Joint Chiefs has said about Iran?

I remember this story about Cheney strategy being, call up bin Laden and hold a grenade to the telephone and pull the pin, and say, "You hear that? That's a grenade, MF, and it's got your name on it."
Guys like Question Hillary love this stuff. They eat it up. "He sounds just like Clint Eastwood!"
Guys like me say, "Wow. Real tough guy. BTW, did you know you're holding a live grenade? It's just a phone, man. Bin Laden's back in the Pakistan border somewhere, but in the meantime, you're about to blow up your living room."
This is called appeasement. If we were tough on terror, we'd say, "Aw, Mr. weanie man thinks I should throw away my grenade! Well, here's two! (pulls pin) How do you like that? How about a third one, you panzy (pulls pin). Look at the little girlie man, running away! Watch me juggle!"

I consider the invasion of Iraq and current threats against Iran to be an insult. We were lied to (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/21/60minutes/main1527749.shtml) and are still fed lies (http://www.democracynow.org/2008/4/28/un_nuclear_watchdog_chief_blasts_us). It is disrespectful to the soldiers, shows contempt for American citizens, and dishonors the victims of 911. We are using war as fiscal policy: secure the flow of oil and protect the petro-dollar in order to maintain our advantage over emerging nations and protect a unipolar world order (neo-conservatism 101). The neo-con experiment is over: it did not work.

Joe Klein - Thank you for keeping up on this but I have a simple question. You wrote: "...but what happens if Bush launches a targeted air and special ops strike on the Qods Force/Hezballah training camps in Iran?"
How exactly did you think it was going to go down if not in this manner? Of course this is what he was going to do. Bush has been trying to build a case for Iranian interferrence in Iraq for nearly two years with the intention of using it as a premise for targetted strikes into Iran. Did you think he would try to mount an invasion using infantry or something?
Posted by Terrapinion | May 8, 2008 1:11 PM
Iran is a member of NPT and has the right to develop civilian nuclear energy. Ayatollah Kahmenei issued a fatwa denouncing the production, acquisition and use of nuclear weapons. He has repeatedly said that the use of nuclear weapons is against the rules of Islam. He also states that nuclear energy is necessary for the Middle East so that when the oil runs out (he estimates 20 years), the region will not be at the mercy of the west for energy and technology. He did not say that Iran would "wipe Israel off the map". Israel is the only ME country with nuclear weapons (Pakistan is Asian). Israel has nuclear submarines, against which Iran has virtually no defense. Israel is not a signatory of the NPT. As a member state, the US is obligated to protect Iran from Israeli aggression. Iran supports the Iraqi government and, as such, is unlikely to arm insurgents. As Iraq has a significant black market for arms from Iraq, Russia, Jordan, China, the US. and as Iraqi militias are constantly fighting and raiding each others arms caches- it is almost impossible to definitively track weapons to Tehran. Iran supports Hezbollah and Hamas, in conflict with our interests, but keep it in perspective- all regional ME powers support like-minded factions, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the US, etc. and many consider Hamas the democratically elected, non-corrupt, freedom-fighters working against Israeli oppression (bin Laden, for instance, was supported by us as a freedom-fighter against Russia). Iran condemned the attacks of 911 and held a national moment of silence to honor the victims.
I am not trying to say that Iran is above reproach or that they are the "good guys". I'm trying to make a point: Be sure that you understand what you are talking about- unfortunately, you can't trust everything you read. Recent events are, simply put, the neo-cons pushing their imperialistic/unipolar agenda.

Clicked the link, read the Ignatius column. What was so interesting about it? There was one tidbit that I hadn't already seen somewhere--the Saudis and other Arabs are actually urging us to hit Iran for them. Otherwise, it was nothing but could be this, could be that. Joe, if you got anything out of that column, you really haven't been paying attention.
Posted by moose | May 8, 2008 1:29 PM
BMB - You raise many good points. And I agree that Iran is neither beyond reproach nor one of the 'good guys'. The current posture towards Iran does not seem to be predicated on anything that Iran appears to be doing.
I find it absolutely bizarre that people think that Iran would attack Isreal with nuclear weapons. To do so would not only invite reprisals (which Clinton need not have expressed because our policies are so obvious) but they would be destroying some of the most holy sites of their religion. And the fallout - which is at the mercy of the winds - would sicken and kill thousands in the neighboring Arab nations. It simply will not happen.
That is not to say that there is no threat that a smuggled nuclear device could not be used against the United States or some other nation but we are already living in a world with far less friendly - let alone less stable - nuclear powers and we have found other, non-military ways of dealing with them. Of course, I would not rule out any military action that is necessary to protect American lives but Iran does not seem to rise to that level.
What I would like to see is for Joe Klein to acknowledge what most of us have been saying for a long time now - that the Looming Iranian Threat is a fiction conjured by those that wish to control the flow of the world's most valuable resource in the waning years of the Petroleum Age. Oh, and to do the bidding of the Bush family friends: The House of Saud, who would like nothing better than for us to beat up on a rising Shi'ite power. The 'terrorism argument' and the 'Iraqi interferrence argument' are merely tools for the manufacture of consent for military action. Call me cynical, but there you go.

Anyone who tries to answer the question "what happens if Bush launches a targeted air and special ops strike on the Qods Force/Hezballah training camps in Iran?" without referring to oil or the threat to the Strait of Hormuz is deluding themselves.
The immediate result of such an attack is the escalation of the price of a barrel of oil to $200+. My guess is that is reason enough for Bush /Cheney to order an attack, so that his oil buddies reap even more windfall profits.
Posted by Ralph | May 8, 2008 2:27 PM
Thank you terrapinion. As far as smuggling a nuclear device, we should be worried. But the threat comes from Pakistan, India, N Korea and former Soviet republics. Unfortunately, our focus on Iran/Iraq takes away from our military and diplomatic ability to protect against proliferation. Also, why is it OK that Israel was able to introduce nuclear weapons to the region? Where is the outrage, the posturing? What about the possibility of a right-wing element of Israel providing such a device? Conspiracy theory, to be sure, and unlikely, but Israel has been stealing nuclear secrets from the US and Europe for years. Is it too "spy-novel" to think that an ultra-conservative actor could make a weapon available so that it will be used, an Islamic nation/faction blamed, and the US springs into action? Point is: we should be more concerned with acquisition/proliferation and less concerned with the price of oil.
Posted by BMB | May 8, 2008 2:29 PM
Another worthless article on a potential attack on Iran that doesn't even consider for a second the possible ramifications of such an attack....wonderful. I think Col Pat Lang's blog is the only place that has even addressed what comes next...and no, the Iranians aren't gonna say thank you and then ask for another. I swear it's gonna take a sunk aircraft carrier in the Straits of Hormuz before the phrase 'Sunburn Missile' is uttered by 'serious' foreign policy writers like Joe. Yup the only consequences of a strike on Iran will be to the Presidential elections and increased work load for the cable nets' graphic departments and maybe a special edition of American Idol to support the troops. Here we go again.
Posted by Cincinnatus | May 8, 2008 2:59 PM
BMB - I understand your concerns about Isreali nukes and their long history of espionage against the United States but I do not think that Isreal is in any danger of losing control of its weapons. They are far too convinced of their necessity as a deterrent to all-out invasion. And the reason that it is OK is because we gave it to them '/snark'. For whatever reason, the United States believes that Isreal is considered 'safe hands' for nuclear weapons. Of course, we cannot stop them from building settlements but it is what it is.
Also, I am equally concerned with acquisition/proliferation and the price of oil. Oil is food, energy, and commerce. And hungry, desperate and impoverished people are more likely to cause internal strife which can turn into external conflicts. This is why I think that people are underestimating the potential problems that Russia and China could cause if we were to destabilize the Iranian oil supply.
Posted by Terrapinion | May 8, 2008 3:11 PM
Terrapinion - he reason that it is OK is because we gave it to them [Israel]
I believe the origin of Israel's nuclear capacity is French, not American.
Posted by Ralph | May 8, 2008 4:20 PM
I suggest that we show less concern for the price of oil because oil is a dead-end. It is finite, dirty, politicized, and surrounded by corruption and death. We should be making every effort to move away from it. Yet Cheney and his Halliburton/Enron conspirators have been setting the national energy policy, incredible!
Terrapinion- you are right to mention China (I'm not knowledgeable about Russia, you may be correct here as well). I think that much of the demonization of Iran is due to the growing relationship and business deals between Iran and China. China has a large demand and Iran will now accept yen and euro for oil. Also, China has a massive reserve of US dollars in their treasury. Nothing scares neo-cons more than a surging China sustained on Iranian oil; especially if they don't need the greenback. Iran can make our lives miserable- best to leave them alone. Problem is that the neo-cons are so convinced that they are right, there is no need for them to seek the truth. They've been planning pre-emptive military action since the early 90s. Read my links from 12:22 pm- reality is an inconvenience, implementing their theory is all that matters. My only hope, and its a perverse one, is that our military is spread so thin that the generals won't let the hawks attack Iran.

BMB - You wrote: "My only hope, and its a perverse one, is that our military is spread so thin that the generals won't let the hawks attack Iran."
I share this hope but I do not see this as likely since their options a far more limited. Intelligence agencies are able to alter the momentum with a timely leak of internal reports as was the case with the NIE a few months ago. But the military is a completely different ballgame. I cannot imagine any member of the Joint Chiefs going to the press in order to thwart an ill-advised attack command.
Let's be absolutely clear about what we are describing. Any general that refuses to carry out an order to attack Iran or acts in contravention of a given order would be committing an act of treason. Essentially a military coup of civilian leadership. This nation has reached a sad state when the civilian population is hoping for a military coup in order to protect it from the dangerous ambitions of its civilian leadership. The best that we could hope for is that they decide to resign en masse.

"QH simply exists to remind us that when we say "no one would be insane enough to ___________" that some people are indeed insane enough."
For once I'd like to be right when I say that!
As for attacking Iran, if we can't even afford the level of troops Gates wants in Afghanistan how can we go off provoking still more countries? Let alone the small provocations against China, Russia and a host of other countries that McCain has already proposed policy to provoke.
If people think this all war all the time policy has high disapproval now wait until we're forced to institute the draft to maintain it.
Posted by nickelking | May 8, 2008 8:53 PM
Most likely they're counting on sea and air power, along with special ops strikes, to fight Iran. If Iran launches land attacks against our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, why then they'll have a better use for our armored divisions.
If all else fails, we have the nukes.
I'm not saying this as a war cheerleader, I'm saying this to point out that not having enough troops will not be an obstacle to them.

Joe,
When are you going to post a blog on your latest offering on TIME so that we can savage it. I have a few choice words to offer when you do.
Posted by Malcolm | May 8, 2008 11:15 PM
Cliff - I agree that the administration would favor air strikes against Iranian targets but I see it as a certainty that Iran would respond in at least two ways: they would counterattack with their large, professional, well-trained army against our forces wherever they may be, and they would pull the knife that they are holding over the jugular of the world's oil supply. This is not to say that we would lose - the only way that we could be thoroughly defeated is with the intervention of Russia and/or China. But China need not fire a single shot - they simply have to flood the market with our debt and we would no longer be able to afford the venture. So I do not htink that we are in danger of being defeatted militarily, I simply think that the cost would be far too high - an obliterated oil market, another destroyed nation to rebuild, another insurgency to fight off, and the confirmation in the minds of every muslim that we are, indeed, as bad to them as they say we are.
Cincinnatus also has a good point. We have already discussed why any form of military attack against Iran would be disasterous to America so let's take the assumption that the administration knows this and that they have decided to inject this issue (via Adam Nagourney) into the punditocracy. This theory appears very reasonable to me. Then the question for Joe Klein becomes: Why do you think that they have decided to jerk your chain in this manner? From what do you think they are trying to distract you?
And finally, how many of your military and intelligence sources were on the Pentagon's psy/ops list? Given the type of manipulation described in the NYT article on the subject, are you prepared to be less credulous of your sources than you have been in the past? Otherwise you are merely the final vector in the delivery of the Pentagon's propaganda virus and I honestly believe that you do not want that to be the case.
Posted by Terrapinion | May 9, 2008 7:54 AM
BMB - I said the origin of Israel's nuclear program was French. I'm not denying that Israel's weaponry hasn't benefited from American technology. See this, for example.

We appear to be screaming into a void here at Swampland today - no pundit responses.
I am still waiting to hear from Joe Klein why it is that he thinks that his military and intelligence sources are not subject to the same sort of extortion that the Pentagon used to manipulate those retired generals.
I would also like to know why it is that the Pentagon sees fit at this point in time to jerk his chain with rumors of an attack on Iran.
