"Bless their hearts..."

I'm here at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, waiting for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to talk at a Democratic dinner. A few minutes ago, I talked to Caroline Valand, the executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party:

She got a sense that something important might be happening here in the state last January, when the person who runs their voter files told her he was seeing a surge in Democratic registrations. Valand's first thought: "Well, bless their hearts. They actually think North Carolina is going to matter this year." It turns out these new voters knew more than she did. This is the first real Democratic presidential primary contest North Carolina has seen since 1988, when it was one of the Super Tuesday states. And as of midnight last night, she says, more than 300,000 people in the state had already voted in primary early voting--a number that "smashes every record we've ever had. ... In the last six weeks, it has just completely exploded."

The early voting is running 5:1 Democratic, Valand says, despite the fact that the Republicans have some spirited state and local races on their primary ballot Tuesday. "It's been amazing. The Republican Party actually had a net loss" in early voting, she added. (North Carolina is a state where independents can vote in either primary.)

Great to hear you're going to the circus tonight. Send in the clowns.... Oh don't bother they're already here.

When is MSNBC's David Gregory Hillaryzilla's latest water carrier ever going to talk about anything but Rev. Wright. It's like Groundhog Day.... over and over and over.

Meanwhile there's other news like illegal calls in NC, Jobs lost in Indiana that Sen. Bayh blames the Clinton administration for in a letter, the War Room tape, and how about Hillaryzilla's abuse of a 12 year old rape victum when she was this hot shot young lawyer. Great feminist. Or maybe, McCain's war for oil comments, 100 years in Iqaq, etc. etc. etc. But to Gregory it's Rev. Wright all day - all night. God, I'm bored out of my mind watching his dribble. David for your career its time to move on. Viewers are looking for another station because you are living in the past.

And why has Rachel Maddow become a wall flower on the MSNBC Gregory show. Night after night, after night. No fire, seemingly detached, anti-depression drugs? She used to be so bright, witty and charming, Now she's an ad for Zoloft,

Maybe I'm too critical. Anyway enjoy the circus!

By the way who is carrying the crapper shovel to pick up all the BS Hillaryzilla is going to produce tonight.

Derek:

It's too bad the Democratic Party is on the verge of civil war. This probably would have been a good year for it. The party is so divided now it looks like either Clinton or Obama loses 25% of the party no matter who wins the primary. I wonder if that will be enough to put the conservatives back in power?

Enceladus:

"the person who runs their voter files told her he was seeing a surge in Democratic registrations."

Can't we just call it an "increase" in registrations?

"Surge" is a politcally tainted word.

Cincinnatus:

This election isn't about Dem vs GOP, it's the real Americans vs the elitists:

"The great divide in this country is not by race or even income, it's by those who think they are better than everyone else and think they should play by a different set of rules," he said. "In West Virginia and Arkansas, we know that when we see it."

Hi Karen, I know this is off topic but...

Have you seen this quote from McCain:

"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will - that will then prevent us - that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzwboGFXrVg
(h/t Atrios)

So many questions...

We're not fighting terrorists in the Middle East?

If we "eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East" al-Qaeda and all terrorists will simply lay down arms and surrender?

So we are fighting a "war for oil?"

What exactly is this plan that will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East?

And the most important question: Who will actually call McCain out and ask these questions?

...Adding, imagine the media frenzy if one of the Democratic candidates said the war was just for oil and not fighting terrorists?

FastEddie:

Steve, forgive me, but you must not have heard that there are elitists running around this country eating arugula and asking for orange juice in diners. Trivialities like "energy" and "the Middle East" cannot possibly be dealt with until we've dealt with the elitists, who are clearly the number one problem facing this country. Much better to make crazy-sounding statements about these issues that your surrogates then walk back from; this makes sure that the voters give up trying to understand your position on the irrelevant issues and refocus on hunting down elitists in their fancy organic grocery stores and ending this threat once and for all.

And, really, Who will actually call McCain out and ask these questions? almost answers itself. At this point McCain can literally say just about anything without fear of repercussion.

ericrsiny:

Take a look at Obama's schedule for tomorrow and Sunday and now look at Hillary and Bill Clinton's schedule. Tells us one of a few things:

1. Obama is limiting his appearances as he wants to play out the clock and does not want to make a gaffe or a major blunder.

2. Obama's heart is not in it anymore and is starting to feel the pressure of the campaign which is nothing like the pressures of the office of President.

3. Hillary is fighting for it more than Obama is.

4. Obama is as lazy as people accused Fred Thompson of being.

wvng:

to ericrsiny. I suspect Obama is feeling besieged in ways he never imagined, particularly from Rev. Wright - whose attacks must have wounded him horribly. The media frenzy has been obscene, ridiculous, and unrelenting. Bob Herbert captured it perfectly in the Times this morning:

"The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is no doubt (and regrettably) a big issue in the presidential campaign. But what we’ve seen over the past week is major media overkill — Jeremiah Wright all day and all night. It’s like watching the clips of a car wreck again and again. We’ve plotted the trend lines of his relationship with Barack Obama over the past two decades. What did Obama know and when did he know it? We’ve forced Barack and Michelle Obama, two decent, hard-working, law-abiding, family-oriented Americans, to sit for humiliating television interviews, reminiscent of Bill and Hillary Clinton on “60 Minutes” at the height of the Gennifer Flowers scandal. We’ve allowed the entire political process in what is perhaps the most important election in the U.S. since World War II to become thoroughly warped by the histrionics of a loony preacher from the South Side of Chicago."
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/03/opinion/03herbert.html?ref=opinion

And then we have Hillary, attacking him with a terrifically effective and deeply cynical campaign, with a brand new ad accusing him of making Americans "keep paying that tax, instead of big oil." No matter that her proposal will never pass congress, no matter that it wouldn't save motorists more than pennies, if anything, no matter that it sends exactly the wrong message as Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday: “The last thing we need to do is to encourage people to drive more and to take away the monies we need for infrastructure in this country.”

I know he expected this crap for the reThuglicans. But he, and I, expected better from Dems. And since he refuses to fight Hillary in ways that will harm Dem chances in the fall, he does just have to weather this as best he can.

Rustydog:

I believe this shift only shows that Americans are fed up with politics and politicians, and nothing more. It isn't about one or the other candidate rather than a mind-set to eliminate those who in-effective doing our business in Washington.

We saw 2 years ago a major shift in the area I live in whereby a 40 year term Republican State Senator was booted out for continually voting for pay increases for himself and his croonies.

People asked, "why are my taxes always going up, and YOU get a huge raise every year?" Democrats better be careful as the voters do want change, but it may not be the same change that people like Obama are calling for in this election.

Whoever is able to bring out his or her message that Washington is truly broken, and they will in fact create the change needed and not pander "Just Words", will be elected. The other candidate will be sent packing back to whence they came.

Rev Wright / Obama '08, WRONG for AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!

kbanginmotown:

wvng: "And since he refuses to fight Hillary in ways that will harm Dem chances in the fall, he does just have to weather this as best he can."
Well put. That is, sadly, a major personal failing of both B&H: that they can and do put "what's good for the Clintons" ahead of "what's best for the party". Throwing the kitchen sink at Obama now may help her win the nomination, but will go a long way towards hurting her chances in the fall.

cap.hill:

Oh, no, no, no, no, no...those aren't all yuppies. Those who lived through the age of dirty carrots are still lurking in the aisles and do care about the issues.

one more hippie for hillary...

hmm...How about using Venn diagrams to describe the demographics which are giving pollsters and media so much of a headache this time?

cap.hill:

wvng: "And since he refuses to fight Hillary in ways that will harm Dem chances in the fall, he does just have to weather this as best he can."

Actually, he's bound himself hand and foot to the image of being beyond politics; therefore, his campaign and supporters have to do the political tap dancing.

The negative comments like kbang's "a major personal failing of both B&H: that they can and do put "what's good for the Clintons" ahead of "what's best for the party". " are still in evidence.

What is actually best for the party and for the country is getting people to register to vote, to exercise their brain enough to make a choice, and to have people caring about what happens. The Bush elections, if you can call them that, were very disappointing. We elected Joe six-pack, all of us, because we were lazy and complacent—suffering from armchair outrage. He truly represented our overall state of this union then.

We're all ready for a change, but to what? Electing a politician who cries "change" without the wherewithal to back it up is not what I'm working for. I may not be trying hard enough yet, but whatever I do before the #@it hits the fan is all to the good. It's better than getting shafted by the GOP; and, after the fact, writing letters and having to go march about waving signs that Bush wouldn't or couldn't read to try to prevent a war for oil or the "patriot" act. Watching the little progress we'd made toward protecting the environment (etc., etc., etc.) gutted and the middle-class milked to feather more elegant nests for the wealthy has been disgusting. It has been so blatantly and condescendingly done, on the assumption, I suppose, that Americans are truly so stupified and oblivious that we can be steamrolled without any response.

OK, so we have two optional responses here...or Nader, actually. Taking the "hope and change" option resonates emotionally, of course, but the actuality is that this approach is really just more media massage and manipulation in the style of the GOP and the "using" of the Christian right. Boy, did they get sucked in and spit out.

I never have been able to digest that whether it came from Reagan, Bush, or the Dems. Hillary actually talks about HOW she's going to go about effecting change. Whether the battles will be won, I don't know, but I want someone who knows how to get the job done in position. Dismissing her experience in the White House is so foolish. What do you think she might have learned, being herself and not a dim bulb? Do you think that the rest of the DC structure is just going to wither or melt away? It will be there and will need to be dealt with.

So, yes, let's continue to talk, and revive thought and action. It's a contradiction that the Obomites say that's what they want; yet, turn around and try to cut the opposition off at the knees. Talk does not include calling Hillary selfish or any other pejorative. Tell me why Obama's plans will work better and how he will see them through.

nuff for now...

Elvis Elvisberg Author Profile Page:

cap.hill, here is hilzoy's post on Obama's accomplishments in the Senate and the IL Senate. Here is the section of his website dealing with his policy proposals.

I agree that the Clinton-Obama race has not been mostly about issues, in part because they are not that far apart on issues. I think-- and red state Dem superdelegates seem to agree-- that Obama will have longer coattails in November. Also, given that he was right about the Iraq invasion, and Clinton (and I) were wrong, I think that he has shown that he depends on the best, most informed advice and acts according to principle. It would have been safer, as an ambitious your politician, to go with the prevailing wind on the Iraq invasion.

Derek:

If the Democratic establishment hands this election to Clinton it is time for the Left to declare it's independence from the Democratic Party. She has already stated her opposition to the Left so I see no reason to remain loyal to her. Independence doesn't necessarily mean supporting Nader. It seems there is a trend toward groups declaring their independence and then acting like free agents within the two-party system. The fundamentalists are a case in point. If the Democrats want our support they will have to earn it, rather than taking it for granted. The same goes for the Republicans. The DLC democrats are operating on the assumption that we have no choice but to continue to support them. That is why they have done nothing to end the war in Iraq and keep writing the war criminal Bush a blank check. It is time to shatter that illusion once and for all. Clinton would be a good person to teach that lesson to.

Pat:

The problem Derek is who is on the Left? Are they organised? Do they want to take their ball and go home. Both the Clintonistas and Obamistas had better start thinking about what is best for the country first, and the Democratic Party second. Our problems transcend the Right and Left. Neither Obama nor Clinton can command the Democratic majority that will take them into the race strong enough to deal with My Friend. His MSM constituency will place their Saint on a white charger which will carry him to the Oval Office. They will ignore the steaming manure in his wake.

Derek:

Pat you are essentially restating the old argument that the Left has no choice but to vote for the Democrats. Clinton argues the Democrats can't win without the Jerry Springer vote. Well they can't win without the Black vote or educated liberals either. The problem is the latter two are always playing second fiddle to uneducated white racists, who like duck hunting and watching cars go around in circles. The Democrats almost won without the Reagan Democrats. I don't think they can win without the support of the Left or African-Americans, but there is only one way to test that theory. Don't let the centrists use fear mongering to force you to vote for their candidate.

jayackroyd Author Profile Page:

cap hill--

The real answer is to stop obsessing over which of these two centrist, establishment candidates get the nomination. Shift your focus down ticket. There are senate races that will benefit from you contribution. There are 52 challengers who have endorsed the Responsible Plan to get out of Iraq. You get way more bang for you buck or your phonebanking by helping one of them.

Bush's ability to implement his catastrophic policies was not his doing. He needed a legislature united on the Republican side, and compliant on the Democratic. If you want to see real change, you need more and better democrats in the House and Senate.

The 48-48-2 Senate is real stumbling block for anything good happening, especially under Reid's leadership where all it takes to filibuster a bill is to send him a note. There are 22 Senate Republican Senate seats up, and they are all in play. If MS-01 can fall, anything can happen.

So stop worrying about who is pandering to whom, or the media's latest attempt to prove some underhanded dirty trick on the part of one camp or another.

Look downticket.

gator_fan:

(1) Obama's public schedule doesn't list all of his appearances for political reasons. I read something about how HRC would do this at times.

(2) I think that the North Carolina numbers illustrate something really clear that has come out of this nomination process: it is a Democratic year. I know a lot of people in both camps are saying it'll be McCain if not my nominee but I'm more inclined to think that it's going to be easy for them to come back when the contrasts btwn McCain/Democratic nominee starts being made front and center.

(3) Bush has poisioned the well for the party and seeing how they tried to use Rev. Wright in LA in a red district and are likely STILL going to lose shows how little these distractions are going to work over all IMO.

As it happens, I'm on the Obama bus rolling across Indianapolis as I type this. He has a very full day, and I will blog about it as we go. A speech at a high school, a picnic, a potluck, a trip to a house that once belonged to his great-grandfather. Michelle and the kids in tow. In other words: F-A-M-I-L-Y V-A-L-U-E-S is the theme of the day. Obama has a powerful new "this is my patriotism" riff at the end of his speeches that I will also tell you more about later.

Pat:

Derek: With respect, no. The Black vote and the educated (elite) has been taken for granted for too long. That silly picture of Kerry duck hunting and windsurfing showed how out of touch he was. I am fed up with soccer Moms, Nascar Dads, Diner Dads, Buffalo Bills, the Churchgoers and assorted groups identified by pollsters as essential for victory. My point is that we should not play the Repug (Rove) game. We need to appeal to all by talking about a range of issues which will find resonance across the board.

But we are poll driven, sound byte driven and we have all these wretched strategists. Have you seen these people on TV: well dressed, well fed, well paid talking about the poor, the wretched, the deprived: nary a one of them has to use food stamps. And these are the people who talk to the journalists, most often on background. You would think that if they were so convinced of their rightness they would be happy to see their criticisms in print.

I think there are enough Obama and Clinton supporters who will say: while I disagree on specifics I will support our Democratic nominee.

Pat:

Jayackroyd: totally agree: winning big in the Senate, and a significant jump in the number of House Reps will give the Democrats room to manoeuvre.

Out of touch with who, the white racists? It disgusts me that our politicians feel the need to pander to those people. I'd like to see them pander to the Left for a change. I'd like to see them end the war in Iraq like they claimed they would. I'd like to see them hold the criminal Bush accountable for at least one of his crimes. That isn't likely to happen as long as we keep voting for them no matter how soft and useless they are.

Kevin Drum would like to know if McCain is going to be permitted to tell bald-faced lis:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_05/013655.php

My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will — that will then prevent us — that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East.

Not talking here about the gaffe--classic by Michael Kinsley's definition of accidentally telling the truth--about the occupation being all about oil. Nor even the lie he went back and told reporters on the press plane--that he was referring to the first gulf war. That can't be the case, because he mentioned Clinton and Obama in this context, and they weren't in office then.

No, Kevin is pointing to the really big lie--that he has a plan to end US dependency on foreign oil. That's an outright lie.

I await Michael Scherer's next virtuoso interpretive and hermeneutic performance in which he assures us that McCain obviously meant something other than what he actually and clearly said.

Hi Karen, one more thing that's very important to understand about McCain's 'war for oil' comment and puts the lie to his 'clarifications:'

The original remarks were prospective, not retrospective. He said when we're energy independent it will "prevent us from having ever to" send troops to the middle east. That's a statement about the future, not the past. All of this spin about past wars ('Gulf War, not Iraq war') is rubbish. His statement was a vision of the future -- a vision where energy independence means al-Qaeda will simply surrender or disappear or something...

But McCain's a "very serious person" and a foreign and military policy expert...

Finally!

I've read the word 'pander' unconnected with Black Americans or the Black vote.

Mark my words:

Hillary cannot win in November. She will NOT have the Black vote. Even McCain stands a better chance of gaining their interest than Hillary does due to the campaign tactics of the last few months.

Most everyone I've talked to doesn't feel all that great an alliegance to the Democratic party due to their taking them for granted over the past several election cycles.

Hillary crossed the line when she went racial. There ARE a considerable number of conservative voters in this demographic, contrary to popular, and uninformed, opinion. A considerable segment of those who do choose to vote in Novemeber will likely vote for McCain.

The claim that a large segment of Hillary's supporters will not support Obama in November, I'm afraid, doesn't hold water, either.

One thing he HASN'T done is cross the gender line. There have been no incidences in which Obama has used her gender against her in this campaign. That's in contrast to her free use of race to attack Obama.

On top of this, there is the spectre of Roe v Wade being rolled back if a Republican gets the nod.

I think she should bow out ASAP. I'm sure she won't support Obama, but it's clear that Obama hasn't alienated her electorate in the manner Hillary has with Black voters.

“Bold Deceit and Bizarre Logic” / Hillary ‘08, WRONG for America

Jamesryan:

To Karen,

Since you are following the clinton campaign please ask her about her not so straight talk on McCain's 100 year remark.

Here is what she said on CBS to Bob Scheiffer in 2005.

Clinton says exactly what McCain said. Clinton says it is not how long we stay but the casualties. Clinton compares it to the 50 years we have been in north korea.

Joe Klein just wrote about the 100 year mark it would be great if this was passed on to him.

Here is Clinton in her own words in an interview with Bob Scheiffer.

Sen. CLINTON: If I could just add to what Senator Graham said, because I think it's really
important we underscore this.

Senator McCain made the point earlier today, which I agree
with, and that is, it's not so much a question of time when it comes to American military
presence for the average American; I include myself in this.

But it is a question of casualties.
We don't want to see our young men and women dying and suffering these grievous injuries
that so many of them have.

We've been in South Korea for 50-plus years. We've been in Europe for 50-plus. We're still in Okinawa with respect to protection there coming out of
World War II.
You know, we have been in places for very long periods of time.

And in recent history, we've
made a commitment to Bosnia and Kosovo, and I think what is different is the feeling that
we're on a track that is getting better and that we can see how the Iraqi government will begin
to assume greater and greater responsibility. The elections were key to that. The training,
equipment, equipping and motivating of the Iraqi security forces is key to that.

But so is our
understanding that if we were to artificially set a deadline of some sort, that would be like a
green light to the terrorists, and we can't afford to do that.

This hypocricy has to see the light of day.

Here is the link to the dailykos poster who found the interview.

I am glad that the primary process is taking longer than expected? Why? Because EVERYONE can vote and be heard...why all the hurry? Why should only a "few" states set the tone for the race and let the rest of us "just agree"?

Clinton should not bow out at all. Why should she give the Obama the nomination? The media demanding her to get out so he could forge ahead is not only an insult to voters, but pure favoritsm on their part. When things don't go our way, we don't demand that people just let us have what we want. This doesn't happen in real life folks - and maybe, just maybe - had Wright's views and his connection to Obama be known earlier then maybe so many people wouldn't have jumped on the "Honest John" bandwagon and travelled to "Paradise Island" - which obviously did not turn out to be paradise at all!

Hillary said 'Rich People. God Bless Us!' on Bill O'Reilly a few days ago. Talk about elitism!

Hill and Bill suffer from poor judgement. Maybe they had a senior moment in January. If they hadn't gone all postal against black Americans, Hill would've split the black vote 50 - 50 with Obama and locked the whole thing up on Super Tuesday.

That coupled with her Iraq vote = the reason why she should step aside.

I'm black. I'm fine with either John McCain or Barack Obama as president. At least they're more honest. Even if we don't want to hear that the U.S. military might be Iraq for 50 years. At least McCain is being straightforward.
