Religious Right Still Putting Heat on McCain, Romney
Yesterday, James Dobson, the head of Focus on the Family, struck out against the candidacy of John McCain, in a statement sent to the Wall Street Journal. "I have seen no evidence that Sen. McCain is successfully unifying the Republican Party or drawing conservatives into his fold. To the contrary, he seems intent on driving them away," he wrote.
Now, other social conservatives have launched a campaign to bury the vice presidential hopes of another prominent Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. The petition campaign can be found at www.nomittvp.com. It reads:
Republican Presidential Nominee, Senator John McCain:We call upon you to reject any consideration of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as a Vice Presidential running mate. We further urge you to only consider for Vice President an individual with a strong and consistent record of support for both the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, and the amendment of the U.S. Constitution to establish marriage as only between one man and one woman.
The site is sponsored by the Values Voter Coalition, a group that put on a spirited Republican candidate debate in September, which McCain, Romney, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani chose to skip. The site also says it has been underwritten by the Government Is Not God PAC, a group led by William Murray, the chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition. The group is raising money for a planned full-page newspaper ad to tell McCain to not pick Romney.
Given the bad blood of the primary campaign, there is little risk of such a ticket. But something else is notable. Christian conservatives, who have never been very comfortable about McCain, do not appear ready to offer assent to McCain's candidacy. They want what they don't yet have, and may never get: A clear signal from McCain that he will address their concerns. As Dobson put it in his statement, "To my knowledge, [McCain] has not reached out to pro-family leaders or changed any of the positions that have troubled them."

I wonder if this hurts or helps McCain?
The Republican brand is so bad right now that any heat he gets from the far right probably helps him with independents.
A little jujitsu, perhaps.

Sounds to me like their just providing additional cover for the Hagee endorsment.
Does anyone really believe that Dobson's and Robertson's fans are really going to stay home and help elect the Manchurian Muslim® ?

"Christian conservatives, who have never been very comfortable about McCain, do not appear ready to offer assent to McCain's candidacy."
Christian conservatives that have been steering the Republican party dramatically over the decade or so. If nothing else comes from this election, I hope that McCain figures out that you don't have to play to them, the most extreme element of the party, to get elected. The only power over they have over the Republican party is the power the party grants them. If they were the core of the party, it's because they were allowed to be. "Republican" and "conservative" don't have to be synonymous with callousness and intolerance. I doubt McCain is going to be the guy that redefines the Republican party for the 21st century but it would be nice if evangelical power over the Republican party was exposed for the sham that it is.

Well, well, well… either McCain is elected without the support of the extremists and their influence evaporates, or McCain loses and rational discourse returns to the marketplace of ideas.
Win-win.

I'm afraid Jay has it right. If McCain wins they'll claim it was because they preferred him over his opponent, if he loses, it will be because they withheld their support.
Either way, they will claim relevance beyond their due.

They can claim whatever they like. It's how regular folks respond to them that determines whether they have any relevance or value.
Personally, I'd like to give James Dobson a cookie. I feel bad that he has to stand in the corners and scream "Nobody's listening to me!!!"

brokenbottle: ..it would be nice if evangelical power over the Republican party was exposed for the sham that it is.
Is it? From 2004*:
So, yeah, if religious conservatives take their ball and go home, it's gonna have an impact - the GOP loses some of its voters...Having said all that, this is just more noise from the religious Right - they can't field a viable candidate on their own - and McCain will continue to do what various Republicans have done over the past decade or so: nod generally in their direction, make a few dog whistles for them to hear, throw them a bone or two, and then get back to the business of business.
*be sure to check out the Ted Haggard reference later in the article...yes, he has come a long way...

That quote has always bugged me grape_crush. This is the same guy who claimed he had "THE math" going into the 2006 mid-terms.
Did anyone, other than Rove, come to that conclusion or did it become accepted wisdom because of the media's (then) awestruck view of Rove?

It's pretty clear that Rove's math involved voter suppression in some key purple states.

Pnnto: Did anyone, other than Rove, come to that conclusion or did it become accepted wisdom because of the media's (then) awestruck view of Rove?
Actually, the quote is from the BBC, not the US media. Still doesn't mean they weren't awestruck, just that there's a better possibility that they weren't in comparison to the US media.
Rove basically called it right in 2004...as for 2006, I think that Rove had a strong inkling as to how bad it could be for the GOP, but you don't go into a national election saying your team is gonna lose.
As for voter suppression, sure, it's possible...but suppressing anything over a small percentage of registered voters is more likely to get noticed.

This bad news for Democrats, clearly.

It's entirely possible that the various voter suppression tactics in OH made the difference there in 2004. Just disqualifying the Plain Dealer registration form had to have had an effect. And Blackwell was acting very aggressively to use other suppression methods.
And they only needed to suppress a couple of thousand votes in FL in 2000 to win that state. Their pulling people off the voter registration lists who had names similar to those reported as felons would have been enough, alone, to account for that many votes.

Oh, I'm the last person who would argue that the effects of even a small amount voter suppression are negligable, or don't have an impact...particularly in Ohio. But that's a tangential topic, however worthy of examination it is.

This disappoints me a little, because I did hope that McCain would be foolish enough to pick Romney as his VP candidate. That would be Obama's best chance to beat McCain.
Turning out the evangelical vote in 2004 probably wasn't that essential to winning Ohio and the Presidency, but it did help Bush win the popular vote and claim a mandate. It's hard to see how McCain will be able to turn out as much of the evangelical vote in November, but he will probably attract a lot of Independents and Reagan Democrats. He's better off letting some evangelicals stay home and gaining the support of more Independents and Democrats, who don't like the idea of voting for Dobson's candidate.
I really hope he doesn't pick Charlie Crist... I used to like Dean but his incompetent handling of Michigan and Florida has really helped the Republicans.

This scam the Republicans are running this time around is so transparent you'd have to be a journalist to say you don't see through it. An older lady called up Rush Limbaugh yesterday and criticized him for running down McCain.
They went around and around and around. She was pretty good actually, staying on point as Limbaugh wandered to and fro. Finally Limbaugh gave in and said words to the effect, "Look if I start praising McCain then the centrists he's going after are going to reject him."
That's what's really going on - and McCain's base, the journalists, know it. They're in on it. The Republicans realize that Bush has so screwed the pooch that in order to get McSame elected they all have to pretend that Bush and McSame are not at all alike.
What you'll see as we get closer and closer to the election is the claim that, although McCain is in the Democratic wing of the Republican Party, that the actual Democratic candidate is sooo much worse - "My God! We have to rally our numbers to rescue McCain." It's heads I win, tails you lose for the Right.
If the stock market tanks in October and some Forward Operating Bases get overrun around that time the Republican is probably going down. The far Right, i.e. the center of the Republican Party, will say McCain was not one of them, that's why he lost. However, if reality does not intrude and Time and the other media outlets do their job, the Democratic candidate will be smeared pretty good by November, enough to let McSame win.
And oh yeah, Michael Shrerer did you check with Ryan Lizza about when those awkward silences occur because all the reporters have run out of questions to ask their client? Any of those would be an ideal times to pose H. H.'s question. You know the question - the one none of you professionals have thought to ask Sen. McCain yet: If elected, how long are you willing to keep US forces fighting in Iraq (if the situation develops not necessarily to our advantage in the coming years)?

What Obama should say about Wright
When asked why he won't disassociate himself with Reverend Wright, Obama should answer with one simple statement that fits into most religious people's mental frame:
I think that that answer would (or should) satisfy even the most right-wing talkshow hack (or even Chris Matthews). How could anyone of faith expect him to throw Wright under the bus when he showed him the way to salvation?

I don't know what else McCain can do to prove to the extreme, fanatical, incompetent, Right, that he is one of them. He thinks rights should be allotted according to sex. He doesn't think women should have the same rights as men. He sought out the support of a minister who believes the Holy See is the Whore of Babylon. He doesn't have any clear ideas and relies on fear mongering and abstract concepts to try and get by. When that fails he gets angry and pouts.
What else does he need to do to prove to the Neanderthals that he is their man?

Blacks4Barack presents:
Hillary's Religion (cult ?) 'THE FAMILY'
Very Scary !
Prays To Jesus For The Elite To Rule The World
The media has repeatedly aired the short clips of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's rhetoric in attempt to discredit and smear Barack Obama. But what's even more interesting is the fact that the media never discusses Hillary Clinton's religion, which is extremely telling and even frightening. A closer look into her 'religion' gives one a clearer picture of why she is the way she is.In a recent article by Steven Brandt many truths about Hillary's religion, called ' The Family' will make you shutter. The question is....where's the media on this one ?
Brandt writes, "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend." said Hillary Clinton, to reporters and editors of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Tuesday the 25th. This is an interesting choice of words, since -- while we mostly hear about her Methodist upbringing -- Hillary Clinton has chosen to associate herself with The Family (also known as the Fellowship), a very conservative, fundamentalist organization started by Abraham Vereide...
"...an immigrant preacher who in 1935 organized a small group of businessmen sympathetic to European fascism, fusing the Far Right with his own polite but authoritarian faith. From that core, Vereide built an international network of fundamentalists who spoke the language of establishment power, a "family" that thrives to this day. In public, they host prayer breakfasts; in private they preach a gospel of "biblical capitalism," military might, and American empire. Citing Hitler, Lenin, and Mao, Doug Coe, the Family's current leader, declares, "We work with power where we can, build new power where we can't."
This quote is taken from the book on The Family by the same name which will be published in May... a book which claims to
"...dramatically challenge conventional wisdom about American fundamentalism, revealing its crucial role in the unraveling of the New Deal, the waging of the Cold War, and the no-holds-barred economics of globalization. The question Sharlet believes we must ask is not "What do fundamentalists want?" but "What have they already done?"
A long article was written about Hillary Clinton's participation in this organization last September in Mother Jones, and The Family, itself, was the subject of an extensive article in Harper's in March of 2003. And on March 21st, The Nation published an article on Hillary and The Family by Barbara Ehrenreich that was published on The Huffington Post and CBS News' web site.
The Family avoids the word Christian but worships Jesus, though not the Jesus who promised the earth to the "meek." They believe that, in mass societies, it's only the elites who matter, the political leaders who can build God's "dominion" on earth. Insofar as The Family has a consistent philosophy, it's all about power - cultivating it, building it and networking it together into ever-stronger units, or "cells."
...wrote Ms.Ehrenreich.
Is it possible that Hillary's participation in this fundamentalist group -- which apparently preaches the "gospel of military might" -- would help explain her vote in favor of authorizing President Bush to attack Iraq? Is it possible her pro-NAFTA stance during her husband's administration comes from its embrace of "the no-holds-barred economics of globalization"? Is it possible that the sense some get that Hillary feels entitled to be president comes in part from this group's belief that "it's only the elites who matter"?
I encourage any reporter covering Hillary's campaign to ask her about all this.
At a time when so many people are wondering what sort of effect the Rev. Wright's sermons may have had on Barack Obama, I think it's only fair to ask what sort of effect The Family's fundamentalist mission has had - and continues to have - on Hillary Clinton. We know that George Bush engages in truly fundamentalist thinking. There is no person or new information capable of challenging his belief that what he already knows is right. Is Hillary Clinton like this in some way? I am not sure.
But the opinion I have formed from this is that - while Hillary Clinton may be considered a Liberal by many - on the inside she is a deeply Conservative person... possibly as close to being a Republican today as she was when she was a young woman supporting Senator Goldwater. This helps explain, to me, why she and John McCain are such good friends. They are both drawn to the use of military power and free market capitalism... and to taking money from lobbyists. The other opinion I have formed is that those who say there are no policy differences between Hillary and Barack haven't taken into account how their religious differences might impact the policies they would actually seek to implement as president.
(end of article)
So now a few things make more sense about Hillary. In review, she's in a kinda power-hungry cult which is actually run by her fellow Republicans which she is secretly one of ! It also makes sense why she could care less about detroying the Democratic Party. Also, beware of her claim to work toward ending the Iraq war. That is another great lie that she is telling. If you listen to her claims she commonly repeats ' I will start getting troops out within my first 60 days '.....How many ? 3....1000...10,000 ? Don't be fooled. Hillary has no desire to end the war. She'll bring 5 troops home then say that she kept her word.
The media should be called out for not exposing this cult. Problem is, they would also be revealing the truths about their fellow Republican's plan and prayers to 'rule the world' by any means. So it's up to us, regular Americans like you and I, to help spread the truth in spite of the media.....For The Re-Birth of America !

"The only power over they have over the Republican party is the power the party grants them. If they were the core of the party, it's because they were allowed to be."
I often feel for conservatives like brokebottle. Sorry buddy, conservativism is what it is, it is fundamentally about nationalism, christian fundamentalism and authoritarianism. Not to get too meta but a thing is what it is, not what it's supposed to be or what it once was in the past. Bottom line, this is no sham dude, these people are now the core of your party, and without them, it's unlikely we would have seen the Republican ascension. I'm sure you weren't complaining too loudly when they were bringing you victory, so it's somewhat distasteful to complain about them now.
As for McCain, there's no way he can offset the loss of the GOP base w/ Independants...these nuts will make or break him. The fundies also bring the frothing at the mouth enthusiasm McCain is going to need for all the GOTV stuff, Independents aren't going to do that.

Greg Jones,
It's friends of his like you who are going to make sure Barack Obama gets rejected sometime this year. That Barb Ehrenreich garbage? Just click here:
********************************
It should be appalling to see someone like Ehrenreich typing that crap about Clinton’s hair-styles—but, as we will see below, Ehrenreich has been pushing political porn of this familiar type for a very long time. And sadly, Ehrenreich wasn’t kidding when she said that Clinton has been drawn into “the sinister heart of the international right.” The example she gave? That troubling “law guaranteeing ‘religious freedom’ in the workplace.”
Let’s understand the extent to which “progressive intellectual leaders” are willing to play you for fools.
The (proposed) law at issue is fairly complex. But let’s keep things fairly simple:
The (proposed) law to which Ehrenreich refers is the Workplace Religious Freedom Act (WRFA). Variants of the bill have been presented in Congress for years; it may be a bit of a Potemkin measure, repeatedly offered as a way of pandering to certain groups. But the WRFA is a bipartisan bill, with somewhat unusual blends of sponsors and opponents. In 2005, for example, the bill was introduced in the Senate by Rick Santorum—and by [ed. - Obama supporter and Sunday show spokesperson] John Kerry, a Democrat from Massachusetts. (In 2004, Kerry was the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.) In the House, the bill was introduced by Rick Souder, the Indiana Republican—and by Carolyn McCarthy and Anthony Weiner, two Democrats from New York.
If so, Kerry (and McCarthy) seem to be there too—a point Ehrenreich absent-mindedly forgot to mention in her unfortunate rant. For the record, Kerry has introduced some variant of this bill every year since 1999, after two of his constituents got fired for refusing to work on Christmas Day. Ehrenreich omitted that too...

“What we’ve fallen into in recent years — not just since 9/11, but particularly since 9/11 — is this notion that, in order to protect ourselves, we have to preemptively go into and — in the case of Iraq — occupy another sovereign nation,” Barr said. “Simply saying, ‘Gee, it’s better to fight over in this other nation and destroy another nation, so we’re not potentially attacked here, is the height of arrogance.”
As for the Bush administration’s refusal to define waterboarding as torture, Barr referred to the practice as “sophistry of the worst and rankest order.”
