Obama will get lots of votes in Scranton. I bet he will take enough vote to deprive Clinton of a double digit win in Pa. It could be a tie for all I know.

Can't fault any of that. Not cheap, not personal.

Good report. I didn't know Caroline Kennedy was out there with Obama. Good deal.

I have somewhat contradictory theories on what Obama is doing in PA.

1. He has internal polling telling him he is dropping like a rock, so he is campaigning his arse off so as to not get blown out.

2. He has internal polling telling him he has a chance at an upset so he is campaigning his arse off to finish this thing once and for all.

3. Regardless of one and two, he is forcing Clinton to throw all her resources at PA in order to cripple her financially.

Soon, I'll be able to stop having theories.

"You can’t say that you’re opposed to the Colombian trade deal and then have your chief strategist lobby to pass the Colombian trade deal." - Well that's a complete lie. She didn't have Penn take a job with the Columbian government. There are fair criticisms to make of Clinton on trade, but suggesting that Penn's lobbying for the Columbian trade deal was somehow on Clinton's behalf is ridiculous.

"She’s essentially saying: “Yeah, I’m bad but he’s just as bad.’ What kind of argument is that? What kind of inspirational message is that?”" - That is such a telling remark. He honestly seems to think in terms of inspirational messages, which may make for more interesting speeches, but those messages are only truly inspirational if they are based on reality. He is essentially saying "I'm just as bad as her, but doesn't it count that I at least try to inspire you?"

And I love the implication that state lobbyists are real Americans, but Washington lobbyists are not. That's really "changing the tone and tenor of our politics."

LOVE the part about the phony controversies, Obama might wanna let his campaign know about that one...#1, it depends on your definition on what "bad" is...I don't care that Hillary takes money from lobbyist, at least she doesn't try to take the high road and lie to people about it, Obama knows that politics is not about absolutes, and that he would not be where he is if special interests didn't support him...I'm not a lobbyist and I've donated to the Hillary camp, to say that she's ALL lobbyist-funded is an insult to me and all the other small-donors who also donate to her camp...He should know that you can't sling the mud and take the high road at the same time...Same ol' same ol' politics

In no way is this a "good report". It's simply a transcription with a minor aside thrown in. Anyone can get the same information from reading Obama's site or watching one of his videos. JNS is no better than a transcription service; why Time doesn't simply hire a local service to provide reports and save money is beyond me.

A real reporter would try to ask Obama/Hillary/McCain about the endless line of lies they've made and their endless line of misleading or incomplete statements and policy flaws.

Here's a real easy-to-state question that JNS can ask Obama:

"LouDobbs says you lied about his position on deportations. Can you point me to an example of LouDobbs supporting mass deportations as you claimed, or would you like to revise your earlier statement?"

Note how easy and friendly that is. Surely it shouldn't take much for JNS to come up with the courage to ask it, perhaps after seeking permission from her boss. I, of course, would do it a bit differently, but then again I'm not afraid to confront liars:

"You lied about Lou Dobbs supporting mass deportations. Would you like to take this opportunity to retract your lie?"

Obviously, that's too difficult for a lightweight like those who work for Time, but if a "reporter" can't even ask the first version, are they a reporter at all?

Who cares about Lou Dobbs?

aybe you need someone to tell you what to think or maybe you are too young to remember when reporters -- reported

The coal was mined right out from under Scranton. All that was left to hold up the city were pillars. Often, the mining companies got greedy and even removed the coal pillars, leaving only earth or wood supports to hold up the roofs of the mines. When I was a kid, it was not unusual to read about a hole opening up and swallowing someone's house. From a 2001 article in The Times-Tribune:

For a city once described as "sitting on toothpicks," Scranton seems to forget that the ground above old coal mines sometimes gives way without warning.

It happens, on average, more than 67 times a year in Lackawanna County.

In just the past few years in Scranton, subsidences have occurred on Pittston Avenue, where a couple of homes were damaged, and on Harrison Avenue, where a 15-foot hole swallowed part of a sidewalk and lawn...

In 1960, residents in the 100 block of South 7th Avenue were jolted awake at 3:25 a.m. by the cracking and crashing sound of a mine subsidence. Thirteen homes were damaged and 15 homes evacuated...

About 90 percent of the 95,000 housing units in the county are considered at risk for subsidence. (The Times-Tribune, 07/08/2001)

Karen Schreck was cutting the grass deep in her backyard when she noticed something wasn’t right.

Pushing her lawn mower closer, she was startled to be staring at a gaping hole large enough to swallow her car...

The subsidence, measuring six-feet wide by 35-feet deep, opened up sometime between Saturday and Tuesday. It is close to the railroad tracks that abut her property at 519 Meridian Ave.

Emergency crews were called to Ms. Schreck’s home at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Inspectors said her home did not seem to be in any danger, she said. (The Times-Tribune, 05/24/2006)

When I was a kid, part of the city smelled of rotten eggs from a coal vein that was slowing burning itself out. The area is riddled with health problems (cancer, respiratory illness, etc.). It's a side of America that the media doesn't talk about. You can't fix a sinkhole by cutting Charlie Gibson's capital gains tax. And it's not just Scranton.

Rick Schultz never knows when the ground underneath him might disappear.

While driving his tractor in a southeast Kansas farm field, Schultz watches for sinkholes. Sometimes the sinkholes happen overnight and sometimes after one lap around the 42-acre field.

“It’s a little bit nerve-racking,” he said. “You have to keep your eyes open....”

The sinkholes are just one of the lingering legacies of coal, lead and zinc mining in southeast Kansas, industries that once rivaled agriculture in that area of the state. But mining also left the land scarred, contaminated with pollutants. The troubles persist.

Fearing that an entire community may be swallowed by the earth, Oklahoma is using federal assistance to evacuate residents of an old mining town. Just across the border, a Kansas community facing the same fate waits on federal bureaucracy for help from the state’s congressional delegation. (Lawrence Journal-World, 20 March 2007)

When I said, "It's a side of America that the media doesn't talk about," I meant the national press. Responsible coverage of the Pennsylvania primary would explore the economic issues and other hardships facing Pennsylvanians. Instead, it's about bowling scores, polls, ordering orange juice instead of coffee, lapel pins, etc etc.

Can we deport Lou Dobbs?

I hope they listen. I hope they give him credit for venturing into, to say the least, hostile territory.

But who knows? This primary has proven that the braver candidate is not always rewarded.

The only thing I would add is you should either follow up on or link to some type of evidence that what Obama said about lobbyists supported or not.

Hillary covertly uses the race card and fear mongering to polarize and overtly exploits gender to garnish her candidacy amongst her broken promises.
The nomination should not be about either; it should be competency, trust, and problems facing our nation. This is why I won’t vote for Hillary’s deceptive, polarizing, tactics. Barack, apart from his speech about race, has never engendered race.

Barack doesn’t take money from lobbyist. There is a difference between a person who works as cash station clerk, a secretary, a chemist, or any other employee and a lobbyist of an oil company. I am nurse I gave. Does that mean I am lobbyist?

Vote Obama

I'm going to go against the comment grain a little bit. It was a fine post by JNS. Accurate, concise. That is what we ask of reporters. But what I also like to see from blogging reporters is accurate posts that also include some well reasoned analysis.

Perhaps not necessary on this one, which was pretty straight forward, but blogger snark and commentary is entirely acceptable - and, in fact, the blogger's mainstay. If it is accurate and supportable, it provides color and enhances understanding.

Well while they are beating up on one another in the Democrat Primary, McCain is diligently collecting money and looking very Presidential. Soon these same voters will have the decision to choose between McCain and one of these baffoons.

I have been confident that eventually Obama will prevail over Clinton, she is just too polarizing and moderate for the MoveOn.Org crowd.

Yes issues are extremely important to all of us, but so is character and judgment by an eventual President.

Empty words backed by nothing, attempting to be moderate when you are the MOST liberal Senator of them all is just not going to make it in November.

Flip-flopping on issues will not win any votes that count.

It's entirely fair to call into question the sincerity of Clinton's views on this question, and to note that her claiming credit for Bill's administration means that she gets to own NAFTA too.

Just as it was entirely fair to call Obama's sincerity on Iraq into question based on Power's statements. (One of the benefits of this extended campaign is that they have both, IMO, been forced into positions they do not really support, but will not be able to back away from in office.)

It's pretty clear to me that Obama used "have" as shorthand for "have a situation where."

Let's don't descend into the same trivialities we lambast the press for.

All this back and forth between Obama and Clinton supporter is wonderful, however the truth is Hillary Clinton is basically out of money and running in the red.

She could win Pennsylvania by 15 and yet find her money sources have dried up.. Her campaign is almost on life support.

What she has proven is that if she is unable to run her campaign effectively (that includes planning for the unexpected, planning to run a full campaign, choosing a campaign staff that is not in perpetual war with itself and putting together a fundraising operation that will last through the primary season) she can not run the country.

Hopefully Senator Obama will choose a capable woman (other than Hillary - sorry) for his VP.

The shame is that like Bill Clinton, Hillary has so much talent she just chooses badly.

SFBear, I'm not Obama's biggest fan, but he is undoubtedly eloquent. There is no way that he is unaware of the fact that "have an employee do something," doesn't mean the same thing as "have an employee who does something."

For example, saying that a boss has their employee beat someone up is completely different from saying that a boss has an employee who beat someone up. I'm convinced that Obama - an Ivy league educated lawyer - would understand that the difference between those two statements is the difference between criminal guilt and innocence.

We do need to focus more on substantive issues, but dishonesty is a real issue. And claiming that Obama wasn't intentionally being dishonest, and was merely unaware of a basic rule of the English language is not helping to improve the tone and substance of politics.

Ironically, there are many valid criticisms Obama could have made of Clinton's record on trade. But that shouldn't excuse Obama's deceptive and invalid criticisms.

Now, I don’t know if any of you have lobbyists in Washington representing you, but I don’t think so…

Well, as a matter of fact, I do. The American Library Association is headquartered in Chicago and maintains an office in Washington for lobbying. (Informational as a 501C3 and with a separate funded foundation for partisan purposes.) He has been using this "I don't take money from lobbyists" as a tactic, which if positions were exactly reversed would be thrown up as a smear by Hillary.

I see why he has chosen to bash her on NAFTA - however, I'll bet he expects Michelle to support in public major initiatives of his even if she has opposed them in private. Remember how Hillary was trashed as first lady for being an independent woman -- just imagine what it would have been like if she had openly opposed her husband on policy. I saw Plouffe yesterday insist that her calendar pages as first lady indicated her support. They actually indicate she had meetings. They don't transcribe what was said in the meetings. Although I'm not trying to say that in those she would have openly spoken out against his policy. Just that he can't claim to know what was really said.

I think his campaign has helped enormously to paint the picture of Hillary as a scheming wicked person. A reporter from the Daily News asked him how he supported his campaign in those daily calls, etc. doing just as much smearing of Clinton while he simply claimed to stay above it. He responded that it was the way things worked and he tried to indicate he didn't approve of that sort of thing to his campaign. A new kind of politics indeed.

Anyway, I think you actually do know the difference between active and passive voice - if you were sincerely unaware of this basic rule of the English language your posts would be filled with grammatical errors.

I can accept that maybe some people are unfamiliar with this basic rule - although I can't immediately think of any adult native English speaker who doesn't know it - but Obama is not among them. Running on being the best orator since Kennedy and claiming ignorance of basic rules of the English language is dishonest. Although it's his supporters who are advancing this contradiction; I don't have the highest opinion of Obama, but he wouldn't go as far as you and SFBear are. It's not Obama's style to play dumb.

ivb, great point. And it's interesting to note that Obama's explanation for saying in 2004 that he may have voted for the Iraq War if he had been in the Senate is that he was supporting Kerry at the time.

Obama is no more a great orator than Shrub is. Once you get Obama off his teleprompter and his speeches written by someone else you see that he is almost as inept as shrub. Almost. Hillary on the other hand is a master at extemporaneous speech and is the true inspirational speaker.

awb's idea of what reporting is is completely off. Reporters aren't supposed to simply be transcription services. People may have noticed them occasionally trying to ask questions, and in fact many news sources promote themselves as the ones asking the "tough questions" and "digging for the truth" and the like. For an example, look at a White House press conference, the ones with reporters asking questions and not simply writing down what spokesmen say.

I shouldn't have had to say that, but I guess I do.

And, that's followed by no less than three commenters (presumably different people) saying in effect "Lou Dobbs bad man", as if because they don't like him it's OK that Obama lied about him.

As for Time's "reporters", I'd be willing to bet $100 that I've asked tougher questions than any of them have, and I'm just a blogger. Here's an example.

Anyone who supporters reporters simply acting as a transcription service and thinks it's acceptable that candidates lie and aren't called on their lies should consider the possibility that they'd probably feel better in a more totalitarian society.

Obama's claim about Lobbyist is always reported with "Obama doesn't take PAC money". While that's true, it's not always been true. He took plenty of PAC money when he was running for the senate and his presidential exploratory committee took PAC money too. People should know that fact too. When he attacks Hillary over PAC money, he implies that these Lobbyists and PAC's will want something in return. Don't the PAC's who got Obama here think the same thing about him?

Can we admit the obvious IRONY and potential prophecy the parallels between Clinton and her tragic horse pick Eight Belles.

The term "Eight bells" can be a way of saying that a sailor's watch is over, for instance, in his or her obituary.

(It's a nautical euphemism for "finished", Mrs. Clinton -- nice pick)

Why is Hillary parallel to filly Eight Belles?

1) Hillary will stop at NOTHING even if it hurts herself and her party and she is not fit to go the much longer track of this particular race.

2) They both are fillies running against a powerful herd of massive colts. Crossing the finish line is not the only goal here. Surviving is another.

3) Hillary wanted everyone to bet for Eight Belles to win simply because she was female -- and everyone who trusted her lost.

4) The jockey tried to stop Eight Belles but she refused -- she kept running and running... until a sickening "pop" and it was over.

5) The filly was fatally crippled, so they euthanized her. Will this happen to America and her potential presidency?

6) Will all fillies have a hard time running in the "big race" hereafter?

7) Was it the new "artificial turf" that did her in?
