Well the solution Michael is obviously that Barak has to invite you all to a Waffle-que.

You can't go under the radar as you could in 1988. Sure this will hurt Obama some, but it will possibly hurt John McCain just as much. McCain will genuinely not want Willie Horton ads run, but he'll be seen as responsible by many anyway. No wonder he was appealing to blacks yesterday. Trying to inoculate himself while he's still got time? It's hard to see who this approach is going to appeal to who would otherwise be voting for Barack.

Actually, the real story here is how John McCain will pretend to oppose these tactics, but not really do anything to stop them. And the media will each it up. He'll still be the mavericak. He'll still be the principled reformer. He'll still be above media reproach.

The media won't hold McCain accountible for his wink-and-nod double talk because the barbeque is too good and their corporate overlords are too republican.

So was that before or after Gov. Ryan had declared a moratorium on executions in Illinois because of the percentage of Death Row inmates who were later exonerated was distressingly large.

The ad might as well have read Obama voted against killing more innocent people.
That little fact might have added some perspective to the article.

Some explanation about the Chicago police policy on immigration status and the fact that depriving drivers licenses and otherwise harrassing illegals leads to underreporting of crime and less safe streets would also shed some light on the issue.

But of course such reporting would be biased. Instead everyone will remain silent and force the candidate to explain such subtleties and then call him out for elitism if he uses large words or complex concepts.

The ad is pretty low quality and unconvincing.

In the Willie Horton affair, Dukakis was hit for furloughing people. It's quite a different matter to say that Obama is weak because of how he voted on a dealth penalty bill.

By the way, the response to this is pretty easy: The death penality system in Illinois was so bronken that even a republican governor, George Ryan, placed a moratorium on the death penalty.

And this was an area where Obama showed a lot of leadership, helping shepherd a bill to get police to videotape confessions with the support of all parties.

So, the merits, there is little indication this will have anywhere near the efficacy of the horton ads.

But that won't stop the media from giving it a lot of play.

Disney, Time Warner, et al will use their free media resources to give millions of dollars in in-kind donations to the GOP by rebroadcasting these 3rd rate ads on TV and helping them raise awareness and money for their causes. Media folks like Michael will disingenously kind of condemn the ads, knowing full well that the free media ozygen they deliver to these third-rate hit jobs are the only thing that gets them any attention.

Just more evidnce af how Big Corporate Media is trying to take down Barack Obama...whether it's wright, bittergate, a debate ambush, and then this. Fortunately, Obama is made of teflon and many people are not as dumb as the corporate media purveyors of pro-GOP psyops would have us believe.

The scandal of the Swift Boating is as much the media giving it life as anything else. Any objective viewer new it was BS, but it got reported even-handedly.

It should not have been dignified with news coverage, period. Instead it got a good 15 to 20 minutes every hour on cable news for a month.

Once again, conservatives are on a mission to divide this country and unduly influence voters by invoking fear. Instead of building upon the differences, then uniting after the election, they will try to insure more divisiveness, more hostility, more hatred. This strategy could well backfire, as folks will start to see through these tactics. The revelation of big oil backers of the swift boat campaign must make those who bought into the ads feel like real manipulated fools in light of today's gasoline prices. the same will hold true to these circumstances.

The man who brought us Willie Horton is back. Floyd Brown, who created the 1988 political ad, has announced the beginnings of a multi-pronged, long-range independent expenditure campaign against Barack Obama. He has started four organizations to serve as front groups, plans to blast out a fundraising email to between 3 and 7 million conservatives, and debuted his first ad, which tries to argue that Obama is weak on crime, and therefore weak on terrorism.

But wait...I thought terrorism wasn't an issue of law enforcement? I could swear there was much mockery about subjecting terrorists to (gasp) the law because they'd only exploit it or something. Something along the lines of how simple police action wasn't sufficient for terrorism and how military force was an absolute necessity for such threats.

I guess as long as it's for the sake of trying to perpetuate a 'Democrats are soft on crime/national security/insert boogeyman here' frame, the truth doesn't really matter.

I wouldn't say 'any objective viewer', because the biggest BS of it all, the part you note right off the bat, remains underexamined: the fact that the Swift Boat ads had an extremely limited run as far as scope and time, and only got the dissemination it did by breathless media coverage. We get constant rehashing of what it resulted it, but not how it came about. The media really doesn't want to admit that they got played on the issue, and that leaves them far to open to be played again.

I agree with your bottom line, but would quibble with your choice of words. The inmates in question were, for the most part, not "exonerated", nor were they "found innocent", which one also sees in print. In most cases, someone - either a court, or a prosecutor's office, or the governor - decided that some key piece of evidence that had been used to secure the original conviction and sentence was after all inadmissable, often for procedural reasons. Did this justify releasing or retrying those concerned? Probably - I'm no lawyer. Does that "exonerate" those concerned? Not so much.

And the Beltway punditry will take this stuff very very seriously, because these ads are obviously NOT the work of a conspiracy theorist whackjob, but that of a Very Serious Person.

Mr. Scherer links to both pro-McCain ads and anti-Obama ads in his posts. That seems fair to me. We are still waiting for Mr. Scherer to as McCain the questions he asked us to submit on this blog. It has been almost a month since we provided these questions, and nothing has happened.

As a reminder, here is one of the questions:

Senator McCain, would you attack Iran with nuclear weapons if this were the only means of preventing the Iranians from building their own nuclear arsenal?

This is serious stuff. Like it or not, people, this is what moves voters so Howie Kurtz and Tim Russert are professionally obligated to replay the ad over and over again. They should probably also convene a panel consisting of five conservatives plus Doris Kearns Goodwin to discuss how much it hurts Obama.

DKG will, of course, point out that a similar ad campaign proved van Buren's undoing. It's good to have that kind of perspetive here.

Thank goodness the press has already established a precedent for treating scurrilous nonsense spun out of whole-cloth to slander Democratic politicians with its patented "he-said, he-said" shrug of the shoulders and a complete unwillingness to check and see if one of the "hes" in question might be completely full of crap. John Kerry was merely the beta test run for this course of action.

So it begins. As others have said, the important thing here is how the media deals with it. My bet is the same old cr*p -- this is a news story so we have to play it over and over. Allowing the slimer to use almost no money for real ad buys and more to produce more slime.

And, of course, the highly principled John McCain will tut-tut and speak against it, but of course the law prohibits him from actually speaking to the people to stop it.

What a deal.

Okay, Michael. But remember, you called it here first. They're just distorted attack ads by the guy who launched a racist campaign against Michael Dukakis more than a decade ago. So don't go writing about these charges as if they're serious 3 months from now.

This entire scenario reminds me of a bad version of the movie, "Groundhog Day." While feigning outrage,the press will play these attacks over and over on an endless loop.

As pointed out above, modern journalism's so-called doctrine of "objectivity" means that you simply report a story from a "he said, she said" perspective. It doesn't matter if one side is demonstrably lying and distorting the issue. They just report it over and over. That is why so many Americans believed that Saddam was behind the attacks of 911.

American political power is secured by professional technicians of the irrational. Using behavioral research methods honed over decades, they craft propaganda to achieve the purpose of securing political support. Fairness and objectivity have nothing whatsoever to do with their mission.

To the degree that "professional" journalists are used as distribution outlets for political propaganda products, they are complicit with the propagandists. Mr. Scherer seems to think that linking to the propaganda products of the McCain campaign is some kind of public service. Showing previews of coming propaganda attractions, as Mr. Scherer does, is pernicious flackery, not journalism.

Every campaign has its ghosts. Dukakis had Willy Horton, Kerry had a swiftboat, Obama’s had--so far--Rev. Wright. Whatever spooky scenario Floyd Brown conjures up will take its dishonorable place, I suppose. And, certainly, Obama-supporting 527s can counter by casting McCain as more menacing to the American public than Osama bin Laden or the Devil himself. That would be typical and predictable.

What would be refreshing, relieving and redemptive, however, would be for Obama to strategically limit all counter-strikes. Instead of pummeling when pummeled, Obama--and every last person who speaks on his behalf throughout the general election--should only clarify the truth, trumpet his positives, point out the ruinous road of smear politics, and count on voters to vote their hopes and not their fears, the truth and not lies, the future and not the past. Obama’s voice, message and integrity will carry him. He can win the general election winded.

Here's why: swing voters are carefully watching the smear factor: who’s dishing dirt, who’s throwing it back, and who’s attempting to non-violently deflect it. Obama promised to run a campaign that wouldn’t devolve into either petty sniping or more gruesome, virulent attacks. That’s one among many reasons I, a Midwestern conservative evangelical minister, chose to support him early on. But his campaign warlords have been drawn to the edge and are being taunted to jump into the age-old cauldron. Once they do, they’ve thown away a critical part of whatever moral high ground Obama is perceived to have. I am convinced Obama cannot win a mud-slinging match with the likes of Brown, Rove and their ilk. He can ascend to the Presidency, however, if he proves himself true--even relatively so--to what he promised when he began his campaign.

But instead of independent voters being attracted to his message or listening to his corrections they perceived him as a man unable to defend himself against some of the worst lowlifes that American conservatism could produce - and that is saying something. The Swiftboaters won because he did not fight back - and you did nothing because they did not come for you...

It would be wonderful if Independent voters and rational conservatives could find a way to punish the sleazy tactics that have carried the GOP to near-continuous victories for the past fifty years but it is clear that that will never happen. Independents are not organized enough to do so and there does not seem to be enough rational conservatives to make their voices heard. Therefore, conservatives will continue to plumb the depths of depravity in their quest for power and face absolutely no consequences for their actions.

I appreciate your comments indybikehiker, and I trust the sincerity with which they are offered. However, if you are simply going to wait passively to see how a Democratic candidate responds to the filth that flows from your side of the street, and then punish that Democrat for not handling it with the amount of grace that you deem appropriate then you are quite probably the least helpful person on your block. Why not try to help shut off the valve with the rest of us?

I'm glad Scherer is bringing this to people's attention. It's important to see who is orchestrating these sorts of attacks, so hopefully voters won't buy into them.

And yet...I feel as though Scherer has some duty that he needs to perform, some task that he has been evading.
There has been a distinct lack of McCain reporting on this page recently, and I wonder who is supposed to be covering that beat.

The "swiftboat" campaign was disgraceful, but I really don't think it made much difference. The only people that put any weight on that sort of nonsense were going to vote against Kerry anyway. Kerry ran a relatively clean campaign, but a weak one. Obama is demonstating that it is possible to be both ethical and effective.

Also, I would point out that the Republicans don't have a monopoly on sleazy tactics. The Clinton campaign reeks of them, and - as indybikehiker points out - even Obama has taken a few minor detours from the high road.

Paul Dirks made the most salient point - in Illinois, the death penalty (for any crime) is gone because of the 29 inmates on death row, it has been proven that 14 of them DID NOT EVEN COMMIT the alleged crime for which they were convicted. There remain, of course, statutes on the books, but the courts and the Governor are not going to implement them because of the demonstrated unfairness of the entire process.

The death penalty in Illinois no longer exists.

Consequently, this "issue" is meaningless gibberish - an important point that seems to have eluded Mr. Scherer.

I have heard this before and I have to disagree. Conservatives would not continue to employ such filthy tactics if they did not think that they worked. The messages would not continue to stick in peoples' minds if they did not work.

As far as the GOP monopoly on sleazy tactics - that is a hard point to argue against. Conservatives tend to cry 'sleaze' when a liberal states a fact about a Republican candidate. Republicans will create a false narrative based on incorrect information and then when they are proven wrong they will say, 'well, sure that one point turned out to be untrue but the larger picture is still accurate!' And, believe it or not, Democrats simply do not engage in such coordinated message discipline. We are not organized in the hierarchical structure necessary to carry it off. Even the Clintons.

I realize that this aspect of your party is difficult to face but it is not going to get better on its own. It is one of the reasons that I have become what I am politically.

Robert Sullivan, perhaps you should read up on the cases themselves, particlarly Adnan Hernandez and Rolando Cruz. Indeed, their convictions were overturned, and Brian Dugan admitted to the Nicarico murder and was later convicted for it.

The 14/29 figure comes from the Northwestern Center for Appellate Advocacy, is true, and was the basis for Governor Ryan's moratorium. I suggest you do further reading.

Regardless, the moratorium remains in effect - there is no death penalty in Illinois. The issue remains meaningless.

I see Bill Clinton is not the only one whose political skills have faded over the years. Crime is not going to be a major issue in this campaign and connecting a vote against the death penalty to weakness against terrorism is just silly. Does this bozo really think the independents and Republicans open to Obama like him because of crime? Holy missing the point of his candidacy, Batman. If anything, this ad makes me hopeful. It seems the GOP has become so atrophied that it doesn't understand the mood of the electorate and how a politician like Obama can be appealing. I think you may be overestimating the degree of coordination on the Republican side. People tend to echo slanders that support their point of view. Did the Democrats need to coordinate "McCain wants the war to go on for another hundred years"? (Ironically, when confronted with this distortion, some Democrats responded with excuses much like the "well, sure that one point turned out to be untrue but the larger picture is still accurate!" that you attribute to Republicans.)

Sully -- I accuse you of murder. Until you can prove yourself innocent, you'll be a murderer in my eyes.

Voting against the death penalty in the U.S. is going to lose you a minimum of 10 points easy. This isn't like the flag pin bs or Ayers. This is one bloodthirsty electorate and they like to kill the criminals. If they find more examples they will use them. It really doesn't matter if Illinois has a death penalty or not. The only hope would be that the 10 points were lost to the crazies already.

No, I haven't; I'm perfectly willing to take your word for it on that one particular case. I'm certainly not claiming that the courts are perfect. The point that I am trying to make is that our criminal court system is set up only to determine whether or not guilt has been proven; the jury never comes back with an "innocent" verdict.

If this is true--and Democratic analysts would do well to carefully test its validity and range--then, not responding in kind to smear/fear makes all the more sense. The tougher thing, it seems to me, is for Obama and his advisors to not get sucked into news media's prevailing insistence/incitence that smear/fear, tit-for-tat, eye-for-an-eye are the only terms in which a general election can be successfully waged (even though they also get to mock and dismiss the players for doing so!)

Could this general election be calling for a higher caliber of political organizer/advisor/strategist/hack than the ones in place who've been trained to drive campaigns to the lowest level and win or lose in the most demeaning, regretable terms?
