Swampland, TIME

Poison

Woe is me. I am set upon by harpies, from the center, the right and the Weh-right. The saddest of these is Lanny Davis's act of Clintonphilia in the Wall Street Journal, which may set a land-speed record for disingenuousness. The subject again is the infamous Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Third paragraph:

Clearly Mr. Obama does not share the extremist views of Rev. Wright. He is a tolerant and honorable person. But

Gotta love those buts
that is not the issue. The questions remain: Why did he stay a member of the congregation? Why didn't he speak up earlier? And why did he reward Rev. Wright with a campaign position even after knowing of his comments?

As I said, disingenuous. Let's continue this below the fold

Let's start with the fact that Obama unequivocally renounced Wright's sentiments in his Philadelphia speech, but he refused to renounce the man or the church. As Swampland readers know, I don't have much use for Wright or the hate-filled garbage he spewed from the pulpit. But Obama's unwillingness to renounce Wright the Man and the spiritual community of the church seems to me an understandable personal, rather than a polticial decision on Obama's part. For one thing, we've seen the Wright highlights--but it's the equivalent of an web gems reel on Baseball Tonight. We don't know how often Wright said "God Damn America." We don't know how often Obama went to church. (Not too frequently is my guess.) We also don't know how often Reverend Wright exhorted the black men in the church to be responsible fathers, or the teenagers to study hard and stay away from drugs. Given the priorities of most black churches, I could probably put together a Jeremiah Wright highlight reel that would make William Bennett collapse with joy.

So what is actually going on here? If Davis is sure that "Mr. Obama does not share the extremist views of Rev. Wright," then what's the big deal? Uh, Politics. Davis is trying to make sure that white people in Pennsylvania don't forget that Obama's former pastor has said some awful things about our country. This, sadly, has been standard operating procedure for Republican spinmeisters throughout that party's ascent and descent over the past 40 years. (Which is why I thought Obama should address his "patriotism problem" as a tactical move, not because--sorry, Fred Barnes and Hugh Hewitt--I believed he was in any way unpatriotic.)

Which brings me to Pete Wehner's elaborate takedown of all things me. This is a dispute between old friends and such things can get very messy when taken public. Pete never tires of trotting out my stumbling, reluctant--and one-time--lapse into support for the Iraq war as evidence of my hypocrisy, as if any sane human wouldn't have changed his or her opinion about that bloody enterprise given the subsequent events. But what really gets Pete's goat is this statement:

But in these last, raggedy days of the rightward pendulum swing, with Republicans clogging the jails and Bushian foolishness having demoralized the nation, it is risible for conservatives to even pretend to care about "national improvement." In our lives, we have seen conservatives use racism as a political tool, war as a witless quest for domination, patriotism as a scourge, government as an instrument of greed, religion and "morality" as camouflage for spreading fear, ignorance and bigotry.

I probably should have annoted that. I could have started with RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman's apology to
black Americans for the G.O.P.'s use of race prejudice to build a governing majority in the South. Probably wouldn't have had much trouble scaring up the appropriate clips to demonstrate the rest of the statement.

And in fact, the flagrant campaign proceeding against Obama right now, reeking of race and patriotism, is the latest, nauseating example of a 40-year trend. It is, as I said, very sad that the Clinton campaign would have anything to do with spreading this sort of innuendo...and entirely predictable that the Republican Party would. When I talked about "spreading the poison" that's what I meant: a purposeful distraction from what should be real issues in this campaign--two wars, serious economic problems, the need to shift to alternative energy sources for national security and environmental reasons. On his radio show last week, Hugh Hewitt disagreed with me that those were the real issues. He made his agenda clear: Obama's positions on Jeremiah Wright, gun control and homosexuality were what mattered to "real" Americans. Now that's cynicism, of the rankest sort. Let's hope it's not the election we get.

I'll take Reverend Wright to 100 years in Iraq any day. You may be a rusty old political weather vane, Chutzpah Joe, but the political wind is starting to blowing hard in America, and you seem to have figured out which way.

Paul-no not that one:

If Lanny is writing on the WSJ editorial page I have a hard time putting him in the "center"
But that's just sematics.

Last time he was this chatty he was making the case for Lieberman against LaMont.

What on Earth could Bevan's point be? Why does he think that Obama should not be judged on his voting record and his policy proposals and his speeches? "Don't be fooled, guys, he's actually an extremist BLACK Islamo-Christian-o-fascist! He's just been hiding it really carefully!"

What's more, Wright's "God might not be happy with the US" sentiments are just peachy keen with conservatives, as long as you say that God is pissed about gay people not being jail, or because we're not teaching creationism in science classes in public schools.

There are two differences: one, Obama and his pastor are black, and two, Obama condemned the offensive remarks.

Criticizing Obama's patriotism is the new Southern Strategy. It is 100% about a having a video clip of a scarily black man saying the exact sort of thing that conservatives say all the time.

It's hard to take Davis seriously. After all, Bush put out a cigarette on him at Yale. That explains a lot to me.

Maybe we could separate the man's whole life and life's work from an intemperate moment in the spotlight? Kind of like you want us to do for you with your endorsement of the war on MTP?

Good post, apart from what I'll assume is a hasty overgeneraliztion.

Lanny Davis, like Penn, Carville and McAuliffe, is a posterchild for what is wrong with the Democratic Party and American politics in general, ideology notwithstanding. Personally, I'd take the bareknuckled obnoxiousness of Mr Matalin over the smarmy, sanctimonious Uriah Heepism of Lanny Davis.

I agree Joe. However, I don't think personally it matters if it was a time lapse or several lapases. You changed your mine after further review. That's completely sane and shows growth. You are also willing to admit you were wrong. Also very sane.

As far as Mr. Davis it is very disappointing to me to see so called liberals pretending they have no clue what Rev Wright was talking about to score political points.

nauseating example of a 40-year trend.

Of course we're both old enough to know how much different things were 40 years ago. One thing the civil rights movement did accomplish was to push the most blatant race-baiting underground. After all, we can now hear endless blather questioning Obama's relationship to Wright but at least Rev. Wright isn't currently being bugged by the FBI, accused of colluding with our enemies or being targetted for assasination. (At least not that I'm, aware of!)

smedley:

Joe-

I read this morning that you were on Hewitt's show when he tried to pull his "here in Middle America" shtick while actually being in California. Next time he pulls that "I know all of Ohio thinks like me" crap, you remind him about great Ohioans like John Glenn, Howard Metzenbaum and Sherrod Brown.

Cincinnatus:

We haven't seen nothin' yet, the loss of WASP(oh) hegemony terrorizes these people...it's gonna be a wild, wild GE. The carefully constructed conservative fantasy world of action movies and puritanism is coming undone and they're not dealing well w/ it. QH, Obamish and RustyKitty will be here to prove my point soon.

Southern Bell:

No matter who is in the GE, it's going to be a very ugly one.

I think by the time both conventions are over Wright's words will have lost their shock and the American public by and large will have decided they're not going to hold this thing against Obama. That's why I actually think it's good to have it dealt with now in this way. Fox will keep harping on it, of course, as will other wingnut outposts, but they're actually doing us a favor by inuring the public to Wright's words.

By the time Bill Clinton got elected in November of 1992 the majority of Americans would have bet that he had been unfaithful. But he still got elected because the issue got dealt with before the convention and by and large we decided we didn't care.

I'm more concerned about what will be thrown at Obama in the late summer and early fall.

Straight Shooter:

Talk about being disingenuous Klein. Democrats are the only ones doing dispicable and racists things in this campaign. The liberal media montra that republicans are the ones who do this is pure sophistry, plain and simple. Any questions about why the democratics keep losing presidential elections? Look in the mirror....

ivb:

I agree with Southern Bell. The GE is going to be VERY ugly. And don't forget, the subtle trashing of Obama ala Al Gore has already begun.

Lanny Davis has made my skin crawl for a long time. I agree with whoever said the openly obnoxious Carville is better than he is.

Maybe the Obama campaign should put together some complete sermons instead of the clips and have them available on the website to point out to people that these were phrases out of context. After all, the question is what Davis said - Why did he stay, Why didn't he speak up before. These are the things that are being said in letters to the editor and in op ed columns. They are going to go away and there needs to be an answer.

Joe, you changed the question to the answer Obama gave in Philadelphia -- that he denounced the sentiments, not the man. That's no going to do it.

I went to a church for a long time where the minister had a lot of personal failings, but the church was very active in the community and that was why I gave and stayed for a very long time. I suspect that was part of the reason Obama stayed and he should try using that tack. I understand TUCC did wonderful community things in Chicago.

Elvis Elvisberg Author Profile Page:

Oh, hey, Joe, if you need it, here's an eloquent explanation of the mentality behind the Southern strategy, from Lee Atwater:

"You start out in 1954 by saying, 'Ni**er, ni**er, ni**er.' By 1968 you can't say 'ni**er' -- that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.

"And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me -- because obviously sitting around saying, 'We want to cut this,' is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than 'Ni**er, ni**er.'"

There's probably some Kevin Phillips quotes along those lines out there, too, somewhere.

Also, Jeremiah Wright is the Bill Buckner of the 2008 campaign. He does one highly visible, media-friendly dumb thing, and everyone ignores all the good he's done/the fact that he had 500 more hits than Joe DiMaggio.

Joe Kline is a weaselly man that thinks he knows everything. There are people in this world that don't buy Obama's answer and don't just let him slide for attending a racist anti American church for 20 years. The media has made excuses for Obama throughout this campaign and a lot of us are sick of it. People like Joe Kline are the worst in what journalism has to offer. Hell, its not really journalism, its more like "cheer leading" Joe, if you read this, go climb back in that hole you cam out of and stay there. The world is a better place when you're not around. Hope something bad happens to you! Go f*** yourself! Sorry people but I hate Joe Kline and everything that comes out of his mouth.

hwebb54:

Why is Lanny wrong when there are MILLIONS that think he is right. They might not be on the internet blogging all the time but they are out their. People like Joe Kline live in this world surrounded by other journalist that are after one goal, create their JFK. They think that JFK period reporters got all the glory that they wished they had so they feed us this Hope Change message like its the greatest thing since television. But where is proof he has ever changed anything? Ahhh, who cares! He sounds like he could do something! He's a lot better than that woman that we all hate because she's smarter and tougher than us dorky journalist. We want to have our JFK damn it and we don't care if he's a racist or hates Israel or not. LOL Journalism is a joke now and more people are catching on to that everyday.

mphillip:

Thank you, Joe.

I hope you are still at this place in October, after you have found good reasons to honestly disagree with some of Obama's policy statements (as some of us will, and that's OK) - but you can still recognize a southern strategy when you see it. AND speak out against it.

These comments about your essay are so very reassuring, and I've seen similar ones elsewhere about Davis.

Maybe, just maybe, the fringe won't become the center this time, and we can have a general election for grown-ups.

I can hope.

Right, the US leaving the ravaged and ruined nation of Iraq is exactly the equivalent of Chamberlin allowing Hitler to conquer Europe. Why doesn't everyone grasp this obvious lesson? Yes, just as withdrawing from a stupid and bloody failed occupation of Vietnam allowed all of Asia to fall to Communism and sink into ruin, leaving Iraq would cause the collapse of the Mideast. We must keep fighting forever. Field Marshall QH/Obamish commands it!

I used to like you, Mr. Klein, but I have to say that your Obamania has grown tiresome. I realize that, as a pundit, you sway easily in the wind of public opinion, but really, don't you think you could show a little backbone? You seem to have take the comments on this blog to heart. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised; journalists are storytellers rather than reporters in our day and age, and if the Obama story suits your personal narrative, that's fine. Just don't expect me to slavishly ("Oh no, he's spreading the poision!") agree with you. I don't think it's inappropriate at all to be concerned with Reverend Wright if we're trying to move towards a colour-blind society, where we judge individuals on the content of their character, and I don't think that it should be swept under the rug. It happened; Obama should deal with it, and its consequences.

lamh31:

This email is just sad, but what would be sadder is someone else actually passing it along to someone else, either it's because they agree with it, or if they just think it's absurd. In my book, passing it along is the worse offense.

Anyway, I have an interesting take on the Rev Wright "controversy". I think that when people suggest that Rev Wright is an issue to white americans (and some black americans) that it primarily depends on geography. Let me explain.

First of all, I was born and raised in the south (New Orleans prior to 2005, Dallas, Tx currently). My mother lives in Ohio, my father lived in Oklahoma. I see all the outrage about Rev Wright as a basically a difference between Northern and Southern view of race relations.

Let's face it, many of the Civil Rights struggle and movement occurred in the South, yes it occured in the North as well, but primarily in the South did it really bubble up from the surface. Therefore there has been a long history of "mistrust", between White and Blacks (originally, but now this includes Latinos, but not as much in many Southern states except maybe Texas). Unlike in the South where there was racism was on display for all to see, in the North, is seemed to be more hidden, bubbling below the surface.

It seems to me that because of this legacy of "mistrust" and segregation (mistrust on both sides, segregation primarily from one side) many Southerners were not as shocked by what Rev Wright had to say as some might believe. It just fed into what some Southerners (NOT ALL, but a good number) believe to be true about the Black church experience in the South. So it did not "color" there ideas about Obama It doesn't matter if they planned to vote for Obama before Rev Wright, but it just helped to re-enforce whatever stereotypes may have worked for them.

On the other hand, it seems that in the North, race and racism is spoken in hushed tones. As I said, it's hidden beneath the surface, so many Northern whites (and others, NOT ALL) were extremely outraged by what Rev Wright said. "Oh my God, have you ever head such a thing?" "Do all Black churches do this". "How can he sit and listen to this..." They basically can't believe this is going on at all. Let's face it, they can't even own up to using race as a strategy up north, they like to call it the "Southern Race strategy". Northerners are just not used to it, unless it's in states or areas where there is more diversity amongst neighbors, and race relations come into play (such as in politics)

Anyway, that's my take.

DISCLAIMER: This take is based on the premise that people are outraged about the Wright issue, and therefore won't vote for Obama because of it. Also, I'm not saying all Black pastors speak in such frank terms as Rev Wright did, but I can tell you as a person who went to Catholic school for years, but was raised Baptist/Spritual, that it doesn't happen every Sunday, but it does happen more often than some realize that preachers say things that may make certain sections of the population upset

You could cast Charlton Heston as "Fighting McCain" and then call the sequel "McCain of Arabia." The people who inhale these military fantasy fumes are freaking crazy. They really think a bunch of Rambo characters are going to scare away the terrorists and conquer the Mideast.

Let's look at some recent American Rambo wars:

Korea - huge bloody stalemate

Vietnam - huge bloody disaster

Lebanon - small bloody disaster

Grenada - silly joke

Somalia - small bloody disaster

Gulf War I - big bloody victory

Afghanistan - big bloody stalemate

Iraq - big bloody disaster

So how is that Rambo act working out for us these days? We are drowning in debt, our soldiers are getting chewed up, and the world hates us. Mission accomplished?

There's something to be said for having a candidate whom people like and who knows how to communicate with them.Remember how many times Bill Clinton was declared dead in the water in '92? Iowa, the draft, Gennifer Flowers....

superterrificdelegate:

In this case, getting all worked up over the Rev. Wright angle is all wrong. Davis was actually articulating Clinton's environmental approach to campaigning by this recycling of an issue about which the public has also made up its mind. They've done the same thing with the Obama and oil money attack. They keep bringing up Wright every week or so; last time it was Nutter. A couple days later John Lewis stated that Obama's speech on racism was very important and it died down. Now they are running radio ads about how Obama isn't being honest in his oil ad, quoting factcheck.org. Problem is they don't like to quote factcheck.org when it debunks NAFTAgate and they were flinging that poo yesterday like it was Ohio all over again.

The important question is WHY Davis is popping off in the WSJ and the answer is that Mark Penn was caught with his hand in the Columbian cookie jar, and worse, Bill's efforts on behalf of Columbia have been exposed. But it gets even more bizarre when Hillary glibly explains her differences with Bill on trade as just couples disagreeing. This is right up there with her equally glib explanation of the Bosnia whopper (with cheese) as a "lapse." The bottom line is that there is no way that Hillary can guarantee that if she were president Bill wouldn't freelance in ways that might undermine her policy just as he is doing right now.

Honestly, it's not just called race baiting because it appeals to racists. Getting liberals into a lather over race is a very effective way of changing the subject from Penn, Bill, and the Columbia fiasco.

Todd and in Charge:

Aaron, I would also add that attacking Obama's wife (as NRO does in its dead-tree edition this week) is also a proxy attack on Obama's race and patriotism - the Southern strategy redux.

Like whispering about McCain's black baby, this stuff is done repeatedly, over many years, because it works.

loucabron:
