Obama Embittered?

I've just spent the day watching McCain and Obama at the Associated Press festivities in Washington, DC--and it was not nearly as much fun as watching them perform out in the bitterlands, although a room filled with hundreds and hundreds of journalists would probably have a deadening effect on anyone (except, perhaps, McCain--about whom more in my print column this week).

Obama was surprisingly flat. He had the look of a candidate who had gotten bad overnight poll numbers (though not from the dire, 20-points behind, ARG Pennsylvania poll blowing through the blogosphere this afternoon--it was taken before Obama's deeply depraved and blood-curdling statements about small-town America were loosed upon an outraged world). (Oh, you didn't think of them as all that awful? Me neither. A little awkward, perhaps. But we're the middle of a media tornado now. Dorothy you're not in What's the Matter with Kansas, anymore.)

Or maybe, Obama just had the look of a candidate faced with an opponent who doesn't disagree substantively with him on any major issue, but has spent the last month throwing the "kitchen sink strategy" at him. In fact, there was a dangerous little edge of pissed-offedness, uh, bitterness in his speech and his responses to written questions from the crowd. In a response to a--should I say, very journalistic--process question about whether the long primary had damaged the Democratic Party, Obama said he didn't think so, but admitted some frustration in trying to figure out "how to show restraint" in the primary battle, even though, "Senator Clinton may not feel she can be as restrained" since she's trailing in the race. He added, with mild snark, that he was grateful to Clinton toughening him up by "deploying most of the arguments the Republicans will use against me in November."

Well, you'd be...embittered, too. But he's also right: the God and guns aspect of this dust-breeze is a distraction that the G.O.P. will trot out again in the fall. In fact, Hugh Hewitt trotted it out against me a few weeks ago on his radio show when I said the usual wedges weren't going to work this time, since we were in the midst of two wars, an economic crisis and a desperate need to wean ourselves off fossil fuels. Hewitt responded that he thought those were issues the "elites" cared about. People in Ohio sure didn't. He has a cousin in Ohio, apparently. And so, here we go again: 81% of the public says things are moving in the wrong direction, the President's approval ratings are below freezing, but we're still going to have the same old campaign as 2000 and 2004. I'd guess the public is in a much different place but, unlike Hewitt, I don't have a cousin in Ohio--just six months of interviewing disgusted Americans in the hinterlands. (My Ohio cousin moved to Los Angeles, not far from where Hewitt lives.)

Again, the San Francisco utterances were not a high point of Obama's campaign--not least because they were uttered in the favorite debauched city of right-wing talk show hustlers, a sure target for God's next natural wrath. Obama got the bitterness right, but he blew the back end of the equation. He included some of the righteous things Americans "cling to" in good times and bad, like God and weaponry, with anti-trade and anti-immigrant resentments, which usually swell only when times grow hard.
Again, this hasn't helped Obama's problems connecting with some white voters--a serious political deficit, though more a matter of style than substance. But he has not unleashed the plague here. And as Hillary Clinton--who was booed when she brought this up in Pittsburgh this morning--may have learned, it is very easy to overbluff such a flimsy hand.

And as Hillary Clinton--who was booed when she brought this up in Pittsburgh this morning

Isn't that the big news here on this so-called issue, to the extent anything about this so-called issue is big news? That voters are decrying this kind of foolishness?

Jim, Foolish Literalist:

I have to say, I had a similar reaction when I heard he used Clinton's shame on you line back on her. I thought she'd gotten under his skin and into his head at last.

The most interesting argument I saw this morning was that a lot of people don't like that he backed off from the "bitter" comments. They may not agree with him, but they want him to stick to his guns.

Paul Dirks Author Profile Page:

I'm not sure to laud you for your honesty, or note that your own 'elitism' is showing through. I of course am refering to your use of the term 'hinterlands' to describe small-town America.

I am glad that you brought up to booing in any event. I really agree that this is much more a controversy within the press and opposing campaigns than it is among those mythical "Average" Americans we keep hearing so much about. And with all the deadly serious stuff that's going on at the moment, you would think that this would have significantly less traction than it appears to.

Corey:

Joe...fairly reasonable post.

However, perhaps because you are a part of the Village and do engage in the type of journalism Obama's comments have received, you can't really see what it is and does to discourse.

It's like many journalists are 12-year old girls who type "ZOMG! She called you a [insert insult here]," through the use of creative inference (Creative being the same thing as nonfactual). I think we can all agree that 12-year old girls are not what you would call good sources of analysis on the average.

TeresaKopec:

Hillary's camp claims it was booed by Obama Union supporters who deliberately came to the event in an effort to change the topic. It would be interesting to know if the Obama camp packed Hillary's event today or not.

Cliff:

Good post, Joe.
I could stand to see Obama unleash some verbal Fists of Fury on his opponents. You gotta work that bitterness out, or it will eat you up.

Paul Dirks Author Profile Page:

Obama Union supporters who deliberately came to the event

Last time I checked, campaign events were designed to reach all voters, not just ones already committed to the candidate. Otherwise, why have them?

Is Hillary going to start engaging in Bush style vetting of her event attendees?

IndyDem:

The ARG poll was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday -- right after the fundraiser comments came to light.

Jim, Foolish Literalist:

Hillary's camp claims it was booed by Obama Union supporters who deliberately came to the event in an effort to change the topic.

More victimhood. I tell ya she'd be unstoppable against McCain with that strategery!!

TomT:

Obama Union supporters who deliberately came to the event

I guess I wouldn't mind so much if they had accidentally come to the event but deliberately coming to it? Seems to me that's displaying just the kind of elitism Obama's trying to distance himself from.

Ara Author Profile Page:

Wow. Sometimes I wonder about you, Joe.

I saw the video of Obma speaking at the Alliance for American Manufacturing -- today -- and he rocked!

Are we watching the same candidate on the same day?

He nailed Hillary for making herself into Annie Oakley and for suggesting she sits in a duck blind every Saturday.

I cannot do it justice -- the guy was simply on fire. It's hard to say who was having more fun -- the candidate or the audience.

If you don't believe me, watch it for yourself.

chgo921:

Maybe I'm missing something. When I first heard about the "bitter" comment, I thought "and the point is?" I'm in Chicago with family in the south. I know a lot of people who are bitter about the economy and the direction of the government. Why is it wrong to point that out?

I've been searching for a job for over 6 months, without any success. The more companies layoff employees, the more competition I encounter. I also now find myself more UNaccepting of illegals (who I know in some ways help our economy) -- especially when a lot of jobs for which I would qualify want bilingual candidates. Damn skippy I'm bitter.

As for the "cling to" phrase, I'm also missing something here. I'm not a religious person, but I know people who use religion to get them through rough patches in their lives. It's not the first time. Would it have been better to have said "turn to"? That would imply these people only have religion during hardships, not at all times.

If anything, these types of "storms" seem to be the makings of a media with too much space to fill and not enough substance with which to fill it. HRC and the repubs will surely use this stuff to try to make an impact. Does that make it newsworthy? Um, don't think so. And the voters who are offended by this are probably looking for a reason to be offended.

chgo921:

Just to be clear, I understood Obama's point about the bitter comment. I didn't understand why it was "news".

ivb:

I understand that Joe is going to be on a segment of Charlie Rose tonight with Dick Polman of the Philadelphia Inquirer in case anyone is interested.

Jim, Foolish Literalist:

Some crazy journamalist at the AP convention asked McCain about torture.

How gauche.

superterrificdelegate:

"It would be interesting to know if the Obama camp packed Hillary's event today or not."

The question is why didn't Hillary pack Hillary's event today. But in any case, it wasn't Hillary's event. It was the Alliance for American Manufacturing forum at witch both candidates appeared. If Obama's union supporters showed up in force to support him and send a message to Hillary, then more power to em. If her campaign didn't have enough foresight to get her supporters out to cheer her on, then what are they getting paid for? I'm going to guess that they were so sure they had a winner that they didn't even bother to worry about negative reaction. When I watched the dueling video clips I was proud of my fellow Burghers for calling Clinton out on her GOP crap. She gives opportunism a bad name.

vicious maniac:

My Christ, this whole bitter/cling flap is a complete failure of this country's journalism, priorities, and understanding of the English language.

TeresaKopec:

I would beware of taking too much comfort from "your fellow Burghers for calling Clinton out." We've seen Obama time and again draw large crowds in states and still manage to lose at the polls (see New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas). I think there is something to the idea that Obama supporters tend to have jobs/money which allow them to take time to attend events (and hire a babysitter), while Hillary's folks don't have the same luxury. This gives supporters and the media a false sense of the depth of Obama's support.

And, let's all have a moment of honesty here: if John McCain had said what Obama did, Obama supporters would be all over him.

Cliff:

"We've seen Obama time and again draw large crowds in states and still manage to lose at the polls (see New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas)."

Well, not Texas, so much.

poh123:

"My Christ, this whole bitter/cling flap is a complete failure of this country's journalism, priorities, and understanding of the English language"

You feel like this because it is Obama being questioned and examined. If it had been Hillary, we wouldn't hear the end of it, for weeks and weeks to come.

PS. Read this...some pretty insightful stuff from salon.com Once in a while, journalists are brave.

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2008/04/14/obama_supporters/index.html

superterrificdelegate:

TeresaKopec,

I promise I won't take too much comfort from Pittsburghers booing Hillary at the AAM forum… But it did make my day!

I'm also wondering if you actually read the full transcript of what Obama said. Because if McCain were capable of and willing to make that kind of analysis about governments' lack of meaningful response to the longstanding economic crises in rural and post-industrial towns, not only would I not be all over him, I might have to vote for him. (Hint: he is not capable of this, and apparently neither is Hillary.)

MNix:

For those who aren't "getting it," here's why this is a big deal. Mr. Obama, the man who's running on hope and unity and called out his own grandma for her prejudices, just unloaded with the great-granddaddy whopper of all urban stereotypes about rural Americans: that they're gun-totin', bible-thumpin' racist xenophobes. (After seeing his own pastor in action, though, I can see why he equates religion with bitterness.) Every time an Obama supporter says he didn't mean it that way or even better, wonders what the big deal is, it just reinforces the point. Gotta say, I love how many media types are focused in on "bitter" as being the main issue of the statement.

Will this work in Hillary's favor? No. Her trying to embrace gun culture is laughable. It's not going to be a democratic wedge issue. Will it come back big time in the general? You better believe it. Even if McCain can't work that angle, you can believe the 527s can.

Rose:

"And, let's all have a moment of honesty here: if John McCain had said what Obama did, Obama supporters would be all over him." - TeresaKopec, good point.

Obama's comments were just absurd, although I don't believe they accurately reflect what he feels on the subject. And I'm certainly not a churchgoing gun owner. But I don't like it when people use stereotypes and judgmental blanket statements to dismiss my belief in gun control and my decision to not be a part of any organized religion. So I don't want to be equally dismissive of working-class people who like to go to church and hunt.

Cliff, the only reason he "won" Texas is because it was also a caucus state. If he's going to win Pennsylvania, he will actually have to win more votes.

And a few people booing in a big crowd is not significant.

Buddhaback Author Profile Page:

One thing I've noticed this election cycle is when the media tends to go overboard with an issue, story or person (notably the Obama love-fest just before Super Tuesday, and Hillary's self-styled "comeback" in New Hampshire), the media tends to over-correct, blowing in the other direction (as my dad would say, tacking like a drunken sailor).

Anyone (Joe, in particular) think this "story" - and I think it's about as dumb as many seem to think - will blow back the other way (just in time for the PA primary?

Just a thought, but if some pundants are starting to "seriously doubt" Obama's staying power now, and he lands within 5-8 points of Clinton in PA, could that not be spun into a knockout blow?

Nom de guerre:

Union members disrupting Hillary? I thought these were the people offended by Obama. I thought steel town union members were anti-elitist. Hillary sure has an excuse ready for everything.

chgo921:

MNix: Still don't get it.

Because I changed my opinion about illegals in our country, I'm racist? Sounds like the same argument people use against Lou Dobbs. And trust, I am certainly NO Lou Dobbs. Don't even like the man and I think he goes too far in his rants. Doesn't mean that I want every job in the US to require a person to be bilingual.

Stating the truth about about your family history/background is wrong? So if pols only say the the PC thing or things they think people want to hear, that's good? The pols who do that are the reason we're in this mess now -- including both Dems and Repubs.

The governor of PA said his state is too racist to elect Obama. Did you forget the gov is a Hillary supporter?

As I said before, I'm not a religious person. Don't care about Rev. Wright, and disagree with the statements looped over and over on the television on the internet. However, do you see some possible way that context should have been used? How do you reduce a 20 or 30 year career to a 30 second sound bite . . . while accurately portraying the person?

If (WHEN!?) the media ever picks up on the fact that McCain is violating federal campaign finance laws, he'll have bigger issues to worry about than Obama.

Meg:

I think these words are important. If Obama offends a large portion of working class whites-it certainly does matter. I agree with Corey above who esentially said that possibly you (Joe) are part of the media village which is insulated from any outside perspective. So according to you Obama's casual remarks aren't insulting! Obama's analysis is important for several reasons: 1) When argue you want to build bridges between whites and minorities it is unwise to attack & alienate one group's personal belief system. This is a class issue and it need to be addressed properly. 2) Obama is albeit a likeable guy, but he is not a down-to-earth kind of person. Therefore his comments come off as condescending from his Harvard educated stance. 3) If Obama believes small town America's unemployment difficulties has existed for 25 years, then NAFTA is not to blame for the lack of jobs in these US towns. Thus his arguments against Hillary are off base.

Obama is acting inconsistent on NAFTA. One of his biggest advisors Bill Daley was tapped by Mr. Clinton 15 years ago to pull together NAFTA. So why is it that no one is reporting this conflict within the Obama campaign? If Obama is truly against NAFTA why would he have Daley on his payroll?

If you want to look this up, the Chicago Tribune investigated this story.

superterrificdelegate:

@Meg

He didn't base the 25 year figure on the effects of NAFTA. He actually didn't mention NAFTA at all. Please re-read the full transcript of his comments.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-no-surprise-that-ha_b_96188.html

The bottom dropped out of the steel industry in the early 80s, but U.S. Steel actually decided not to reinvest in its mills in the late 60s. So in the case of the steel industry, he is actually low balling the figure. The burned out steel mills in the Mon Valley (where the bulk of Western PA's mills were — Pittsburgh proper had very little actual steel) have been torn down for the most part, and some newer industries have come in, but the overall economic depression is still severe. So when Obama talks about economic stagnation for 25 years he is correct historically. I don't think anyone has actually argued that the loss of manufacturing jobs is due primarily to NAFTA, but it has certainly accelerated the process.

@MNix,

Sorry to be a broken record, but do check out the full transcript and Fowler's setup is helpful too. The question he was responding to was about whether he was running behind in PA because of race, and he was actually arguing against that. In contrast, Rendell had no problem saying that there were people in PA who just would not vote for a black man, which is also true (it is true everywhere), but Rendell took a lot of heat for that locally because there was a feeling that he was too eager to cast PA as backward; that it was a stupid thing for a governor to say about his state.

vicious maniac:

You feel like this because it is Obama being questioned and examined. If it had been Hillary, we wouldn't hear the end of it, for weeks and weeks to come.

No, I feel like this because the issue is brainless for the reasons I already outlined.

According to Oxford's:

BITTER:adjective 1 having a sharp, pungent taste or smell; not sweet. 2 causing pain or unhappiness. 3 feeling anger, hurt, and resentment. 4 (of a conflict) harsh and acrimonious. 5 (of wind or weather) intensely cold.

Hey, look at that. I don't see anywhere a definition that says "total loser". Perhaps the Official Valley Girl Lexicon references that particular usage. Or maybe he was just reiterating an obvious perception. No, that can't be right. He thinks the poor and working class are all loser slobs. And we know this is false, because Lady MacClinton has artfully explained they've been happily rolling up their sleeves and woodcutting and hunting food for the winter or some other bullsh*t while their end of society turned into a meat grinder on Bill's and Bush's watches.

CLING: verb (past and past part. clung) (cling to/on to) 1 hold on tightly to. 2 adhere or stick to. 3 remain persistently faithful to. 4 be emotionally dependent on.

Hmm. Emotional dependence. Or: Getting one’s good feelings from outside oneself. A psychological problem. Some have emotional dependence to drugs. Other's an attachment to a particular movie star. Take a wild guess what the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons clings to.

The idea is they have an unhealthy emotional relationship to fill a void or sate an internal problem/dilemna that of course is inherently paradoxical. Comic books, drugs, and movie stars don't exactly have all the answers, love, and validation you need. Neither do guns, demagoguery, or even religion, as fanatics from the various faiths and creeds across the world prove over and over.

So to whit:

"And it's not surprising then they get feelings of anger, hurt, and resentment, they become emotionally dependent to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

I don't see where he insulted anyone. At least not anyone that has an unhealthy attachment to anything. I guess he should've dumbed it down for the po' folk, or stick to "safe" words like your average douchebag modern-day pol a la Bill Clinton. Then again, he was at a private fund raiser in tony, educated San Fran. I dunno.

Meanwhile, Hillary/McCain/the MSM are really, truly hoping for enough suckers out there to fall for this puny discourse. I guess maybe they figure po' folk don't know the definition of the words "bitter" or "cling". Hey wait, that's ELITIST.

By the way, I didn't read your link. I know, I'm a jerk.

dj1mt:

seriously, she was jeered by like two people...Hillary supporters know how to maintain decorum, even when in front of candidates they don't agree with...Obama supporters need to grow up for God's sake, this kind of immaturity by his supporters is not a good sign heading into a general election with Teflon John McCain...

dj1mt:

And isn't that Annie reference playing the gender card...man, o, man I wish sometimes the race card would be half as funny...

JoyousMN2:

oh more please???

could ALL of you post about the Obama bitter comments? It's SO important to my decision on who to vote for that I need all the Swampland bloggers to tell me what they think Obama meant, then I'll listen to all the tv pundits tell me what it meant, then I'll know how dreadful Obama is. From there it's an easy jump to how wonderful it would be to have a president I'd like to eat donuts with.

TomT:

Good jobs on Charlie Rose tonight, Joe. You were thoughtful and accurate, and resisted bloviating to a great extent.

Corey:

@Meg,

You're missing the point. Obama is right (though chose the wrong words). He was stating what leads people to vote against their economic interests. In times of trouble, you cling to those things in which you can take comforts: religion, family...guns...whatever.

Because you've lost the illusion of control over one aspect of your life, if the illusion of control is threatened for those remaining aspects you retain, you will react. Republican talking points for years have focused on god, guns, and gays. They try to threaten the identities of those economically depressed groups in order to get them to vote their way.
Moreover, by tying their identities more closely to whatever they do, they automatically become more vigilant with respect to messages and information that touches on those things.

IN short, fear works.

BMB:

Wow, vicious maniac- excellent post, I couldn't agree more.
I think that this is a natural reaction to a candidate that treats voters like intelligent adults and will express his opinions in a frank manner. Opinions, of course, are open to disagreement, which can lead to actual discussion. We are not used to it: it is not the PC, flag-on-the-lapel, soundbite, poll-driven drivel that passes for campaigning (and, coincidentally, contributes to this bitterness). Perhaps these are the growing pangs of an active, informed citizenry.

suzyqueue:

Oh, so Obama's embittered? Mean old Hillary has treated him badly, and he feels sorry for himself? Please... He didn't mind watching her battle one media tornado after another -- most not of her own making, you'll be surprised to learn -- while he and his campaign stoked them shamelessly, "new politics" be damned. I have no sympathy.

chokora fukara:

What works: Maybe Hillary should consider outraging these bitter rural folk ...

SFBear:

suzyqueue:

Do you have an example of Obama stoking a media tornado directed against Hillary, or are you just frustrated at what a lousy campaign she's running?

Meg:

@superterrificdelegate

I well understand he didn't focus on NAFTA and everyone knows there were significant job losses since the 80's. My point is Obama has tended to feed into the frustrations over job losses by targeting NAFTA as the program that has hurt unemployed/under-employed Americans. He has pounded on Clinton for supporting NAFTA. It appears on these blogs, that Obama supporters choose to cherry pick what you want to discuss, which makes it difficult to debate apples to apples so-to-speak. Obama has said NAFTA has not worked. Doesn't it seem hypocritical to argue against this trade deal WHILE CONTINUING TO HAVE BILL DALEY(the architect of NAFTA) as one of his key advisors!

@Corey- I believe the fight is good for the democratic party and likewise for our country. Even M.Dowd of the NYTimes, has stated that Hillary has helped Obama learn how be a stronger debater. Unfortunately, the heated debate has come late to this campaign. It is a necessary component of any presidential election. In general Corey, I respectfully agree to disagree!

OBAMA SUPPORTERS, I ask that you spend some time in examining YOUR CANDIDATE. Unfortunately OBAMA'S candidacy, has not been scrutinized as vigorously as candidates have been in the past.

The Chicago Tribune has a part of his story-
