McCain and RNC Disavow N.C. Republican Party Ad
The morning began with news that the North Carolina Republican Party was planning to run an ad that will reference "controversial figures from Obama's past." Ever since, both the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee have been trying to distance themselves from the effort.
On a landing strip near Inez, Ky., RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said he put in a call this morning to the chairwoman of the North Carolina Republican Party. "I left a voicemail encouraging her not to run the ad," he said. Katie Wright, an RNC spokeswoman, elaborated, saying the national party first learned of the ad last night, and raised objections at a staff level. "We didn't see it as helpful or appropriate. But they are an independent organization," she said of the North Carolina state party.
A few minutes later, McCain weighed in himself. "We asked them not to run it. I am sending them an email as we speak asking them to take it down," McCain said. "There is no place for that kind of campaigning."
In this respect, McCain continues to draw a fine -- and somewhat fuzzy -- line between those issues from Obama's past that are fair game and those that are not. While he has mostly ruled out Obama's relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright as a legitimate issue, McCain spent Sunday saying that Obama's relationship to another controversial figure, William Ayers, was a legitimate issue. Ayers, a former member of a violent fringe of the anti-Vietnam war movement, the Weather Underground, is a now a college professor in Chicago.
"His relationship with Mr. Ayers is open to question,” McCain said on ABC's This Week, about Obama. “He became friends with him and spent time with him while the guy was unrepentant over his activities as a member of a terrorist organization, the Weathermen. Does he condemn them? Would he condemn someone who says they're unrepentant and wished that they had bombed more?”

It's the same swift boat type advertisement that Bush disavowed (with a wink) in 2004.
There's enough plausible deniability for the McCain camp to keep him "above" this issue and like 2004, the MSM will dutifully play these ads over and over.
Oh the joys of soft money!

This is a prelude, dupes. Surrogates circumvent campaign finance laws to swiftboat opponents, McCain disavows, demonstrating his straight-talking, maverickness.
Of course, we saw all this in 2004 when Bush proclaimed no connection to the SBVs, and diverted attention by claiming to oppose the independent groups he supported.

Dear Michael Scherer: Next time you are on the bus, can you ask McCain if he will condemn and refuse support from pro-lifers who execute doctors, bomb clinics and set them on fire? Will he repudiate the pro-life movement, which condones these kinds of terrorist activities with its silence?
I'm ready for some straight talk.

In February, after working hard to gain Hagee’s endorsement, McCain said he was “very honored” to receive it. Since then, he has both “repudiate[d]” and defended Hagee’s anti-Catholic and “anti-anything” remarks. But as Think Progress has noted, McCain has never specifically commented on Hagee’s offensive beliefs about Hurricane Katrina or his anti-gay comments.
Given the fact that McCain will be in New Orleans tomorrow, will reporters ask whether he agrees with Hagee belief that the devastated city was cursed because of a gay pride parade? We’ll be watching.

Google is my friend....
Despite their reputation, as well as their violent-sounding rhetoric, the Weathermen were always careful to call in a bomb threat at least an hour before their bombs were timed to detonate. This allowed the target buildings to be evacuated, so no people were hurt in the blasts. The only fatalities due to the Weathermen's bombs were three of their own members. On March 8, 1970, a townhouse in New York's Greenwich Village blew up. The owner, James Wilkerson, was away; he had allowed his daughter Kathy to stay there, little suspecting that she had joined the Weathermen, or that the place would be used as a bomb factory. Diana Oughten, Ted Gold, and Terry Robbins were killed in the blast.

NoMoreBlatherDotCom: The pro-life movement (how ironic) includes elements that encourage violence against reproductive health clinics. McCain has
a solidly pro-life record and like most Republicans, courts and accepts support from pro-life voters and organizations.
My point is, if the game we are going to play is guilt by association, then how about we all play by the same rules?

Cookie Puss, like many, doesn't understand what GBA means. It doesn't refer to the links people have. It refers to things like, "Bad Person believes something. You believe the same thing. Therefore, you're bad too." That's the GBA described in Cookie Puss's last comment, and it's a fallacious argument.
In the case of Obama and Wright, Ayers, and on down the line we're talking about a different sort of association: people Obama has chosen to associated himself with. That isn't the same association referenced by GBA.

How many times are we going to see this playbook:
1) GOP groups puts out smear
2) John McCain publically brings attention to smear by condemning it by press release, not by actually picking up the phone. After all, convincing Michael Sherer that Saint McCain opposes the ad is more important than actually stopping the ad.
3) Get credit for the high road while you wink and nod the low road.
4) Sit back and wait for the media to praise John McCain and watch Obama's negatives rise.
5) Send thank you letter to Karl Rove

The difference between Wright and Ayers is simple... The far left could use any Wright commercials associated with McCain to allege that he's racially insensitive. Unless aging 60s radicals are now a protected minority group, McCain going after Ayers doesn't carry any such backlash. In fact, attacking Obama for Ayers is a net plus for McCain because it subtly reminds everyone of McCain's biography.
Posted by Illinidiva | April 23, 2008 12:59 PM
RKA, you're right. I actually feel like going out and working for Beth Purdue. She is being attacked with both racism and sexism - "look, she's a weak lady who will get dominated by horrible black men" - and the Democratic party should make sure she has the resources to fight back.
llinidiva, good point. And I expect that in the GE Ayers will become a code word for Wright.

I knew this would happen. McCain's surrogates will do the nasty work while McCain protests their methods, thereby reaping the benefits of their tactics.
That's why Obama was wise to forego public financing, even if he took some flac for his position. The 527s make campaign finance reform a big fat joke.
Personally, I hate the surrogate war. I'd much prefer any bunch of candidates deliver their own punches instead of pretending to be above the fray.
Plus, McCain only backed off Wright because he's got Hagee in his own closet to worry about.
Posted by Southern Bell | April 23, 2008 1:13 PM
The Democrats have built up their fundraising capacity, but they lag behind the GOP in ability to create and fund attack ads.
If GOP organizations are going to do this, then we need ads about McCain's philandering, his age, his wealth, the Keating Five scandal, etc.
(To say nothing of his ignorance about every issue facing the country).
Because as RKA points out, McCain gets 100% of the benefits of this stuff under the status quo. I'd prefer to see the status quo change by the GOP stopping their attacks, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
So, counterattack it is.

Michael care to comment on this story? How is this happening?
Yet readers would have no idea about how Halperin leverages The Page -- and Time's credibility -- to stoke gossip, innuendo and even advise politicians on dirty tricks. Here are three recent examples:
Halperin advised McCain to "play dirty" and use "race" against Obama, telling the Republican candidate to "[a]llow some supporters to risk being accused of using the race card when criticizing Obama."
Halperin falsely accused the Clinton Campaign of pushing opposition research onto a columnist, without checking the accuracy of the claim.
Halperin advised McCain to traffic in smears that the Senator had already disavowed, including this imperative: "Emphasize Barack Hussein Obama's unusual name and exotic background through a Manchurian Candidate prism."
That is part of what Halperin writes for Time at The Page. So Time pays reporters to advise candidates on how to "play dirty," exploit race and spread falsehoods based on bigotry and treason. And The Times can report on how popular Halperin's recipe is -- though it really ought to give readers the entire list of ingredients. The rest of the media-political culture laps it up. The article correctly notes that The Page drives not only Halperin's traffic, but his influence among fellow media elites -- from his positive, incomplete profiles in The Times and The New Yorker to his longstanding leadership of the "Gang of 500." (See Eric Boehlert's great article). And that tells you everything you need to know about our broken political media.

The townhouse explosion occurred while the Weathermen were making
"preparations for a bombing of a U.S. military non-commissioned officers' dance at Fort Dix, New Jersey in what Brian Flanagan said had been intended to be 'the most horrific hit the United States government had ever suffered on its territory.'
It was only after this accident that they changed their tactics. One senses that Bill Ayers, Obama's associate, disagreed with the non-violent tact.

This is called spin. The question is who Obama chose to assoaciate with as an adult.
It's not like Ayers hides his past. He wrote a book this century called, "Fugitive Days." He appeared in a Weatherman documentary a year later. He keeps a blog with a communist star on it.
Obama met Ayers in his home for his original political crowning. Ayers donated to his campaign. He appeared on panels with Ayers. He served in an organization with Ayers.

MS- this is more of the same irresponsible journalism. This item originated from the NC GOP and is commented on by the chairman on the RNC. You're nothing but a lapdog. You let the repubs make your story about "controversial figures from Obama's past". Then you quote McCain as wanting no part of this type of politics, right before you let him hit Obama for his association with Ayers! You say McCain draws a fuzzy line between the two- is that your criticism of McCain? Do you find it hypocritical? unnecessary? slimy? Did you ask him to make his position clearer?
So let me see if I get this post right: you present the NC GOP's mud-balling ad, towering statesman McCain stayed above the fray, and Obama is guilty by association.

> Give us a break. The Weathermen broke from other anti-war groups because they believed violent revolution was called for. And the time was now.
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.... And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
Here's another:
“A little rebellion now and then... is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.”

"The Next Six Months
Some Republican or conservative group runs a dumb ad.

Lookee here. Even Jim Geraghty from National Review knows the real poop...and isn't afraid to say it...isn't afraid to compliment McCain for this "shrewd" move that allows him to smear Obama, get this ridiculous commercial aired nationally, all while appearing to take the "high road", sending folks like Scherer and AMC into convulsions of pure happiness because their man, their bus buddy, is just so darned honorable...
The Shrewd Play Behind McCain's Disavowal of the NC GOP Ad
I'm hearing a great deal of complaints about John McCain's disavowal and disapproval of a North Carolina GOP ad that shows Jeremiah Wright's "God d*** America" sermon and hits two local Democrats for endorsing Barack Obama.
Does no one else see what's going on here?
How many other North Carolina Republican Party ads have you heard about this year? Last year? The year before that?
By criticizing the ad, McCain turned it into a national story, which means the ad is likely to be replayed on the cable networks and linked on YouTube and discussed on the talk shows and talk radio and written about in newspapers and magazines. This ad has 76,000 views on YouTube already, and it was posted online Tuesday.
And McCain gets to take the high road, saying he doesn't want to see negative campaigning done on his behalf.
He might as well say, "I want to win this campaign because I have better policies, not because my opponent associates with domestic terrorists who placed a bomb in a women's bathroom in the Pentagon. I want to win this campaign because I have better ideas, not because my opponent (as Karl Rove put it) "attended a church and developed a close personal relationship with its preacher who says AIDS was created by our government as a genocidal tool to be used against people of color, who declared America's chickens came home to roost on 9/11, and wants God to damn America." I want to win because voters believe I can solve the country's problems, not because my opponent's wife says she hasn't been proud of this country for the past twenty-five years."
This is what's at play here, folks. It ain't honor. It's the same old Rovian politics at play. Don't be fooled, please.
