Leaks and Such
In a story I wrote early this week I called the dissemination in the media of the audio of Obama’s San Francisco fundraiser a “leak.” NYU’s Jay Rosen, who co-created the website that Mayhill Fowler works for, contends that it wasn't a leak. Rosen pointed out to me that in today’s print edition of the New York Times (I can't vouch for this as I haven't seen the dead tree version of the Times today and am on the road so relying on the virtual version) an anonymous Obama source told Kit Seelye that “from time to time, people do blog from events closed to the media."
I couldn't find a story from today online, but I did find a story from April 14 by Kit which smartly covers Fowler’s decision to blog about it even though she’s an Obama supporter. Kit’s story doesn't include the quote Rosen sent me, but it does note that the unnamed person who invited Fowler to the event has since told her that fundraisers are always off the record.
Rosen also pointed to a San Francisco Chronicle story today where campaign spokesman Bill Burton contradicts that:
"Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said Tuesday that while the San Francisco event was closed to traditional media, it was not off the record. The campaign has not denied or challenged Fowler's version of the event. Burton said there's an expectation now - even at private events - that everything will be recorded and posted."
Traditionally fundraisers have been closed to press and off the record. But, in this new Internet age of bloggers, fundraisers – especially for Democrats – have become an increasingly grey area of on or off the record, closed or open to the press. The situation puts the Obama campaign in an awkward position because, frankly, if the major news organizations knew the campaign was knowingly letting in bloggers to these events they would demand open press access – after all they are the ones paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to travel with the campaigns: why should some blogger get access that their reporters don’t?
As for my usage of the term leak – I did not mean it in a derogatory way. Indeed, leaks to my mind are often a hallmark of good reporting. If I gave Jay or Mayhill offense, I apologize. I used the term in the literal sense: “To permit the escape, entry, or passage of something through a breach or flaw,” according to the American Heritage Dictionary. The campaign did not intend those comments for mass consumption or they would’ve invited the media and deemed the event “open press.” The fact that the comments leaked out is a good thing for journalism even as it forces us to question access and coverage in this new digital age.

Of course their representatives should have at least as much (if not tons better) access to campaigns--after all, they're paying the campaigns through the nose for it!
Bloggers don't pay the big political campaigns anything, so there's no reason at all for such unfair privilege to be handed to them.
I'll bet the reason why John Edwards got zip press (except for the "haircut" story that nobody could ignore) is because they just couldn't come up with the big bux to pay the press corps to travel with them--the Clinton and Obama campaigns must have had the kind of cash that paying for competitive coverage takes...
Wow, thanks so much Jay Newton-Small for illuminating this heretofore unknown to me process/meta bombshell: no matter how poorly mainstream media covers the campaigns in contrast with much of the blogosphere, they deserve ten times the access of individual bloggers, due to the fact that they pay McCain, Obama and Clinton "hundreds of thousands of dollars to travel with the campaigns".
What an incredible piece of news!
I'm with you, Jay Newton-Small: the press corps deserve every bit of that to which they're entitled...

In the age of competent blogging and miniaturized digital recorders it is very wise of the campaign to admit that everything is on-record. This is part of the digital sunshine policy that is inherent in this form of communication. A politician can no longer say different things to different people just to get elected. At some point they will figure out that they need to be as honest and forthcoming as possible and to speak to us like the adults that we are.
And that is why I am very proud of Obama for not trying to backtrack on his statements about Pennsylvania. He was essentially reciting the thesis behind the book "What's The Matter With Kansas?", and I do not remember anybody clutching their pearls when it was published back in 2004. When honest, hard-working people become physically and financially insecure they become susceptible to conservative demagoguery on the issues of god, guns and gays. Conservatives have used these issues to distract the voters from the very real economic damage that conservative policies have inflicted on middle-class America.
But instead of discussing these important issues we are treated to 24/7 speculation over whether white Pennsylvanians were offended by the remarks. I appreciate the process piece, Jay N-S, but I would like to see this issue penetrated a little bit more.

Wait...I'm confused.
Are mainstream media outlets paying the the campaigns "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to travel with the candidates, or are the campaigns paying the mainstream media outlets "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to cover the candidates on the road?
Who's paying for what access again?
Who's entitled to what (instead of lowly, impoverished, un-credentialed bloggers) from whom?
I'm obviously confused.

I read it merely as "They are the ones paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to travel with the campaigns," referring merely to travel expenses, and doing everything else that the candidates are doing.
Not "They are the ones paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaigns to travel with the campaigns." I think that might be reading too much into it.

But Jay Newton-Small seems to believe that, by virtue of having enormous expense accounts, the establishment political press corps are simply entitled to all kinds of access--at least whatever fundraiser-admittance is given to lowly individual bloggers who can simply show up at their local events (instead of being jetted across the country at corporate expense).
This sense of shocked, offended entitlement on the part of Jay Newton-Small led me to conclude that the "hundreds of thousands of dollars" that justifies certain treatment of mainstream journos by the campaigns must be payment for 24/7 access.
What other explanation could there be for her offense?

Rather than asking the campaigns to pay for us to travel with them, all news agencies pay to travel on the plane, in the motorcade, for the food that we eat. It's done to try and stay neutral and not feel beholden to the campaigns. The same goes for Air Force One. The traveling circuses can cost news agencies hundred of thousands of dollars -- every network has a reporter and news crew full time with all three candidates as do most wires, newspapers and magazines. The often campaigns reward those people who stay with them with access not only to the candidate but his or her staff. I'm not arguing for my entitlement: as a magazine we don't cover the minutiae like the wires or tv networks and we seek another kind of access altogether. I was pretty specific about "major news organizations." Try to put yourself in the place of, say, the head of CNN: you're paying all this money to cover these candidates when a blogger gets crappy audio that you're forced to run because you weren't given access when that blogger was. Wouldn't you be angry? Wouldn't you ask the campaign why they're giving access to bloggers and not the CNN correspondent? JNS

First of all, thank you very, very much for responding to commentary (mine or any other person devoted enough to your work to read, analyze and then comment upon it). Thanks so much, it is very appreciated.

How reasonable! I can't think of another way to cover the campaigns that makes any sense, other than to simply rely on the work of people who actually reside in the places to which the campaigns travel to cover the events, which has the additional benefit of avoiding the "traveling circus" "freakshow" sensibilities inevitable in the traditional "on-board" coverage. I'd also remark that there's a lot to be said for the neutrality that comes from not identifying with the rest of the participants in what is essentially a carnival show. The "insider" vs "mark" (or "savviness" as has been expressed so well elsewhere) mentality seems to be somewhat of a problem for the press corps' beloved "neutrality". Perhaps not sending these reporters around the country might improve the coverage, especially as it concerns relaying local culture and concerns faithfully to a national audience. Blogger networks seem ideally suited to this task, IMHO.

And that helps me the reader and news consumer...how, again? It seems like this system of money spent/access granted costs the news organizations much less than if they kept local or regional staff--a situation that I am told was the case at some point in our history. Ultimately, I can't think of a reason why a campaign would "reward" news organizations for anything other than the most self-serving rationales, and likewise I can't imagine where the objectivity is in reporters being "rewarded". Given what I've experienced since the rise of cable news networks, none of this arrangement seems to produce coverage that works to enhance my understanding of the issues in the election affecting my life or interests. How exactly is better personal access to the campaigns' staff going to help me understand what the candidates propose or their records with respect to current commentary? Better access to staff might enhance political reporters' savviness with respect to campaign tactics and personalities, but the value to me (the person buying your product, remember?) seems quite low, especially for the seemingly atrocious sums of money spent in pursuit of more access to people in charge of creating spin.

If I were the head of CNN, I would complain as loudly and often as I could, if I thought for half a second that it would produce a more profitable balance sheet that quarter.
At some point, though, the thought might occur to me that there could be a much better, even more profitable (in the long run) way of doing business, in which the deteriorating mass-marketed "national political news" systems, techniques and values were re-thought and re-tooled in the same way that allowed financial services companies to largely replace bank branches with ATMs. At some point it might occur to me to ask myself why bloggers could have the kind of access that has nothing to do with traditional correspondent roles and mechanisms--and therefore could yield unexpected rewards.

Interestingly, reporters aren't the only ones paying thousands of dollars. Bloggers like Fowler pay out of their own pocket for their travels covering the campaign, though, of course, not to the campaign itself. She dashed back from San Francisco, apparently, just to file the story (although I don't know why she had to be there in person). She also followed Obama's bus tour through PA., though not in the bus, but behind it in her car. Now that's dedication. It also shows how wrenching it must have been for her to write what she did. Seelye's story quoted her as "taken aback" by Obama's comments, and found them "judgmental" and "elitist" (her words). So, it's not all fake outrage.

Thanks for doing this, Jay. I'm not offended, and don't recall saying I was offended by your calling Mayhill Fowler's report a leak. I said (I believe) that I thought it was inaccurate, not right, a bad description.
Here is what I wrote at my PressThink post on this whole controversy:
If, as an OffTheBus blogger, I go to an on-the-record event that is not accessible to the press, then the report I file is a leak. Whereas if the press goes to an on-the-record event that is not accessible to me, the report they file is just a report.
Do I have that right?

I'm confused. Or perhaps you are confused. You quote an Obama spokesman who clearly says that the campaign expects that anything the candidate says, even if the press isn't invited, could be posted on the internet. Then you say:

You can parse the difference between expectation and intention if you want, but the fundamental issue here is the mindset (what Jay Rosen calls "pressthink") that conflates notions of the public, mass consumption, and press entitlement. The underlying assumption that confuses you is the equation of closed to the press and off the record. In your worldview, it is the presence of the press that mediates the difference between the public and the private. You create the stage upon which public actors play out the drama we call news. The only way something can become part of the drama is through you. If something an actor (in this case Obama) does off-stage gets into the public sphere, it, by definition, was a leak.
The problem is that the world is changing and the press hasn't caught on. The audience is no longer content to limit itself to cheers and jeers. The cast and crew have realized that your stage isn't the only one in town.
Think this through. There are lots of public events that you aren't invited to. Take, for example, church services. You probably think the whole Rev. Wright controversy was the result of a leak, but the Tuzla controversy wasn't. Does that really make any sense?
