Guess Who's Not Coming to Dinner
Via the Page, here's the video from the press conference where Obama cut Wright off.
Is it overly cynical of me to think that Wright diminishing Obama as a mere politician was the true tipping point? Because that seems to be one of the few new arguments (ideas? rants? conspiracy theories?) that Wright made. Sadly for Obama, it may also be the only correct one.
Reader Comments (64)
I wonder if the wingnuts will focus on Obama's sayin Wright was not his spiritual advisor or mentor because that does seem to contradict what has been said about Wright's role in Obama's life.
Posted by Southern Bell | April 29, 2008 4:23 PM
Has there ever been any suggestion that Wright and Obama had a social relationship? We've all known professionals and thought we knew them better than we really did.

AMC: Now that Obama has thrown his preacher under the bus. Will you guys in the media focus as much attention on the racist ads that the GOP is throwing and will throw against Obama? Or is what Obama done. Still not good enough for you?

It's fun to see the KoolAid drinkers think this will be the end of it. That's a good one. He said: The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago... And based on his remarks yesterday, well, I might not know him as well as I thought, either.
Of course, what he forgot to mention is all the dozens of times he sat in his church, and the fact that he's apparently featured prominently in his book, and the fact that until recently he was listed on his website. So, I'd say he knew him pretty well and he's just lying.
If any ObamaBots want to strike back, go to one of their campaign appearances and ask Hillary this question or McCain this question, then upload their response to video sharing sites. That will have the side effect of bringing the debate back to policy and it will also show up the MSM.

Kathy, Obama has said Wright brought him to Christ. That suggests some kind of deep connection that the wingnuts will keep harping on.

Seems to me Obama gave Wright a fairly wide berth from the start of this.
I mean, how long did it take Mittens to dump Larry Craig when we found out Wide Stance was playing grab-ass at the airport? About two hours?
They tried to play nice and now Wright's stuck his head up above ground again so they're stepping on his neck. Fine with me.

KathyR, he said he was like an Uncle.
AMC, yes I do think you're being too cynical. I don't think he denounced him for political gain; I think Obama felt that Wright had personally betrayed him. But the Obama campaign needs to better explain what changed after Wright's appearance at the National Press club. I get it, but I'm sure you're not alone in seeing things differently.

AMC,
It's not necessarily cynical, though more than a little uncharitable (there has been another candidate who's received the benefit of the doubt on here until he removed all possibility of such doubt). Actually, I take that back, it's entirely cynical (given your job, you can be expected to be cynical), though not necessarily incorrect.
A more charitable reading would be one where Obama had viewed certain comments (re AIDS, 9/11, etc.) as aberrations and not the essence of the man. Yesterday, Wright showed that he is prepared to present these particular views as the essence of who he is, and this may be, in Obama's mind, something new and worthy of Obama's response.
A slightly less charitable, more cynical opinion would be that Obama didn't disown Wright during the Philly speech because he didn't want to hurt him. Now that Wright seems clearly intent on damaging Obama's candidacy, Obama no longer faced such compunction.

Do some people divorce their spouses after 20 years? You know after loving them, knowing them, living with them? And then run for President despite committing such a horrific sin of misjudgment? No?
How about 14 years then?

Almost as funny as the Clintonites who seem to really believe that "she's been vetted! It's all old news...."
Barack Obama is a politician? Jeepers! You don't say?
Why! next you'll be telling me that John McCain isn't really a Maverick! that he's master media manipulator who manages to charm people like you (and Klein and Scherer and Russert and Tweety) into overlooking the fact that he's a gigantic fraud who has flip-flopped on every issue up to and especially torture and the Iraq War!
Oh, wait, no you won't.....

The tipping point was when Obama realized your profession will not let any inanity go until he performs backflips for your amusement - provided that candidate is a Democrat.
One wonders how much our discourse could be improved if the media simply put as much effort into stopping Republican smears as they do running interference to stop the truth about the GOP.
You'll never hear McCain say "100 years" because he did. You'll never hear anything but calls for Obama to denounce every black person in America that might give white people the willies.
If this campaign could be about what McCain and Obama actually say and believe, Obama would be leading McCain by 30 points.

Did it ever occur to you guys that the only reason Obama was polite before is he didn't want to set this guy off on a national press tour? I mean, he keeps you awake during Sunday mass, but Obama had to know what a loose cannon this guy was.
This is what happened: Obama dismissed the non-issue as a non-issue politely, while disavowing the guy's beliefs, and refused to insult his former associate, under the mistaken belief that there had been a shift in our diseased political discourse.
Obama's pastor was personally insulted that someone could listen to his sermons, yet not use their national platform to push his belief that the government invented AIDS to kill blacks and homosexuals.
The media, long since inured by their polite conversation with their peers rantings about Islamofascism month and God drowning New Orleans for homosexuals, and having never been exposed to a non-Republican view, had their sensibilities shocked at hearing someone with out-of-the-mainstream leftist views, flipped their gored in horror.
Obama, finally submitting to the shallow, obsessed, Drudge wanna-be press corps, distanced himself, yet again, from his former pastor's views in the hopes that finally, finally, the media will move on.
And this is what will happen: the media will move on to the Next Drudge backed, Matthews enabled, Swampland capitulating load of crap to be dropped on the American public. And the American public will never know McCain said he didn't care if we kept the troops in Iraq for 100 years.

Has anyone counted how many threads Swampland has dedicated to Obama's preacher versus McCain or Clinton's religious affiliations. I don't recall any on Clinton, and maybe one on Hagee, a long, long time ago. The Wright threads must number in the hundreds now.
Is that because he is Black?

Yes, OF COURSE it is because he is black. Cox and Company can't talk about race per se in polite company. But what they can do is obsess over a cultural aspect of that race. The fact that Hagee and Pat Robertson and other white evangelicals who utter nasty racist eliminationist rhetoric *on a national platform* and *on their daily television broadcasts* is overlooked. Why? I'd say it is because they are 1) white and 2) much more politically powerful than Wright is.
The GOP has constructed this strategy to deal with Obama's race in a negative way, knowing that vapid gossip columnists like Cox and Company will eat it up with an ice cream spoon. Never will they deal with the white evangelicals with whom the towering hypocrite John Sidney McCain has cast his lot.
Wipe that barbecue sauce off your chin, Cox. It's starting to draw flies. The joke isn't funny.

I'd like to know what the connection is between McCain's singing about bombing Iran and Hagee's insistence that the United States join with Israel in a preemptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God's plan for both Israel and the West. Hagee is the guy who McCain spent a year chasing an endorsement from and who claims Catholics, including white Catholics, are all satanists. He is the same guy who also states that God hates America and is behind the hurricanes that hit America.

And, I should add, White Republicans.
But don't forget, towering panderer John Sidney McCain kinda sorta doesn't exactly agree, most of the time, that the Catholic Church is a prostitute, except when he's in North Carolina, or that gays are responsible for Katrina, and that the Holocaust was the fault of the Jews.

But no. Cox, gossip columnist, tired snarkmeister, and loud and proud In-the-Tank-for-McCainer just doesn't feel that snarky and gossipy about McCain's love for the white radical evangelicals. Why is that, I wonder?

Well now, isn't that special!! Finally the MoveOnOrg "anointed" one has spoken. Jeremiah Wright is no longer ON the bus, he is UNDER it, hook, line and sinker.
How can anyone endorse, agree with, or even think of voting this totally incompetent candidate into any office? Obama isn't even capable of being our local dog catcher at this point. He wouldn't know if a dog was ready to bite him or lick him to death.
I've said it and WILL keep on saying it, if you cannot judge the character of someone you've known for 20 year, you certainly are not ready to be the President of the United States of America. You DO NOT have the intellectual abilities or maturity it will require to pick a Secretary of, Ambassador, Chief of staff for the military or an Advisor. If after 20 years you do not even have an inkling that Jeremiah Wright is nothing short of totally insane, that is downright scary or a lie.
The majority of the people knew Wright was a complete nut case in less than 60 days. It took Obama who knew this man for 20 years to come to the same conclusion. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Now I know the Obamabots on here will continue to endorse and say that Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread, to each their own I say. But, for the rest of the undecided, those who are still debating in their mind, and Hillary supporters, PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS MAN NEAR THE WHITE HOUSE.

There really is no other explanation is there? The content of what they say is more or less the same in most other respects. Not only does Hagee hate America he preaches that God hates America too. What other reason could there be for the complete blackout of coverage on Hagee and Robertson, versus the 24/7 obession with Wright?

Ms. Cox, to diminish Mr. Obama as a "mere politician" is an insult to Mr. Obama as well as the exercise of politics itself.
If I remember correctly, FDR was a politician. So is George W. Bush. To equate the two as "mere politicians" is cynical oversimplification. You might as well equate a souffle with vomit.
Politician or not, and he definitely is, Mr. Obama should be commended for his forebearance of the various cranky people in his life, since he himself is not evidently a racist.
However, he is also a human being, and he has the right to get mad when one of those cranks stabs him in the back.
See the Clintons' treatment of Bill Richardson to understand what a real political hatchet job looks like.
Posted by oizydoizy | April 29, 2008 8:56 PM
Obama has proven that he has the ability to handle pressure. He has proven to be a good leader. Previously he condemned Wright's words without condemning the man. Yet Wright chose to attack Obama. Today Obama defended himself today very eloquently and seems to have severed all ties with Wright. Obama can surmount this and will get through it.
Posted by Alan | April 29, 2008 9:23 PM
From the post about this whole thing on Glenn's site.
Am I the only one who saw the speech, saw the Q&A, and came away with the idea that Wright in no way insulted Obama by calling him a 'politician'? Again, going off on his earlier thing about 'different doesn't mean deficient', his example was that Obama has a job. As a politician, he has constituents and people he needs to please and speak to in certain ways. Same so, Wright is a preacher. He has his own constituents he has to speak to in a way. Difference is that with Obama, he has a deadline, and maybe two, for the job he has. The nomination/convention, and the general election if things go right. Everything he says is couched in that frame, good or bad.
Wright is accountable to his god and clergy, and come election time, his role won't change no matter what, where Obama's very well may depending on how things go.
It wasn't a jab at Obama, but more so saying 'Look...I'm a preacher, not a politician. If you want to parse my words like you would a political leader's, you're doing the wrong damn job'.
Again, from what I saw of Wright, I saw some uncomfortable truths, some common sense, and some religious fire that while I may not endorse it, find nothing wrong in it to condemn. I don't see the wild-eyed Wright that everyone in the media has created. I see a hatchet job, a mythical beast based vaguely on reality in order to cast Obama as a villain in the right-wing fantasy the media is so eagerly and obsessively creating.

You approvingly link to a short post which bashes Obama for asking Samantha Power to resign after she called Hillary Clinton a "monster."
That makes him a mere "politician."
But if he didn't ask Samantha Power to resign, you could say his tolerance of that remark shows he's a mere "politician."
To journalists who eat John McCain's food-and-drink, anything a Democrat does can be twisted into a negative.

I don't particularly dislike Wright...at all. But I guess the American media and people do. All that being said, Mr. Obama has run a rather arrogant campaign based more on his flawless judgment (because he made a speech against the Iraq war) and his integrity, than on his policy.
This is why perhaps the Wright issue takes on so much force even for those who don't particularly care and are undecided. The actions taken by Mr. Obama from the famous speech on have been well...lacking in judgment.
He has relied on lofty rhetoric and inspiration instead of specifics and has thought that it should be enough since America has been lacking this for decades.
This "armour" is beginning to crack and although it may not crack enough for him to lose the primary it may not hold through the presidential race.
By the way, I am all for inspiration and oratory. Citizens' imaginations must soar. In some countries that is all they've got, but all this must be accompanied by a huge dose of humility, something Mr. Obama has lacked from the very start and has gotten increasingly worse as the campaign has advanced.
One last point, it would have been much better if others would have coined Obama as the uniter, transcendent candidate instead of his campaign, instead of him, which he repeatedly did yesterday during the press conference. This has always bothered me. Let others be the judges and definers of the selfless work you do. Don't do it yourself. There is enough coverage for others to do this. Of course this is a deeply personal opinion.

I was a philosophy major in college and studied liberation theology in the 80s when it was actually being developed down south where Ollie and his friends were having so much fun.
So I watched Wright's Press Club speech with interest, and largely agreed with his "Invisible Man" conception, the notions of abjection, marginalization, and found many of his ideas provocative, scholarly, and in a few instances, profound.
Where it went off the rails, unfortunately, was in the Q and A afterwards. Wright is clearly a careful speaker, as his hyper-reliance on his prepared text in all his speeches make evident. Now we know why.
But his comments about marginalization speak to a larger point. For all the media's talk about elites, and their bizarre obsessions with finding out the mores and ways of the blue collar white folks, the media has completely written off the views of many of the people they seek to understand and represent. For example, a significant number of blacks and whites do think that AIDS was a government project gone bad, that astrology really works, that UFOs exist, that Elvis may be alive, and that their lotto ticket selection -- this time -- is divinely inspired. Those are the "bar folks" Matthews is always prattling on about.
Yet here we see widespread rejection, revulsion really, over someone articulating the views that many marginalized Americans (rightly or wrongly) share.
Posted by Todd and in Charge | April 30, 2008 12:29 PM
Yes, it is overly cynical of you. You also happen to be right. He seemed more upset by the pastor seeming to diss him than by anything he said about the country. I say "seeming" because I'm not convinced he set out to hurt Obama, even though that was certainly the effect. He may have just been trying to clear his name and using his 15 minutes in the spotlight to grandstand a bit. But Obama -- along with most of his media acolytes -- seems to have taken it that way. As with all things Obama, it's always about him.
Posted by suzyqueue | April 30, 2008 2:40 PM
Senator Obama was, as he usually is, direct, forthright and unequivocal in what he said. But there is a nagging question though. What did Jeremiah Wright say new on Monday that so upset Obama, much more so than what Wright has said over the years? Is it that Wright called Obama a politician? The fact that Wright seems to be seriously and intentionally affecting his candidature seems to be the primary cause of Obama's sadness and anger rather than the content itself. He did not sound so angry in his Philadephia speech, where he said Wright was like family to him. Obama has thrown his grandmother and Jeremiah Wright under the bus now that they are useless for him in furthering his political career. Who could be next? There are sporadic reports of Obama's campaign being 'arrogant' and if that becomes an issue, he will need to find another scapegoat. Since he seems to have a habit of finding a scapegoat within his own 'family', may be Michelle Obama should beware.
