Ed Rendell
In the issue of dead-tree TIME that hits the newsstands tomorrow, I've written this story on Hillary Clinton's biggest backer--and most formidable weapon-- in Pennsylvania.
It includes this criticism of how the media is doing its job:
In a recent appearance on Fox News—not exactly considered friendly territory for the Democrats—he congratulated the network for having done "the fairest job [and] remained the most objective of all the cable networks." In an interview with me, the governor was again in media-critic mode. "It took Saturday Night Live to bring some fairness to this election," Rendell said, referring to the show's now famous skit lampooning the media's crush on Obama. "It's stunning. Does Keith Olbermann get checks from the Obama campaign?"

So I gather there aren't prohibitions about using state resources for a candidate's campaign, as there are federal? (using the office and the phone). As for telling your employee she's going to do so something for you "on her own time," that's totally disengenuous - not to mention a violation of her right to choose which candidate she wants to support. (And if there are such prohibitions why didn't you say so?)
An examples of Barack Obama "walking the walk" about a different kind of politics is his refusal to engage in whiny attacks against bad media coverage. Running a continuous loop of your pastor's comments for days isn't exactly coverage biased in his favor. (he does point out that doing this distorts the view of Rev Wright; he doesn't complain about it) Both Obama and Clinton have gotten favorable and unfavorable coverage. While KO makes clear he is pretty much an Obama partisan, he also isn't pretending to do straight reporting. Fox was so anti-Obama it even offended Chris Wallace. Give me a break. The Clintons rightly think if they complain enough it will change the coverage.

So the most formidable weapon in the campaign is Chrissy Matthew's favorite pol? Fail.
Posted by Florida | April 3, 2008 7:03 AM
Nice piece KT. Rendell is a nice guy to have on your team. I missed the Luke Ravenstahl endorsement which I think will carry some juice too.
As for the complaining about the media KathyR is probably correct. They are just working the refs. (Although the Fox is fair stuff was just silly)
Posted by Paul-no not that one | April 3, 2008 7:13 AM
he congratulated the network for having done "the fairest job
Of course the most important part of "working the refs" is to stroke their own egos.
I'm of course less concerned over who the press likes in the primary than I am over McCain being given a free pass to sow confusion over Iraq. (priorities and all)
But then again, I haven't gotten any viral e-mails attacking anyone BUT Obama so there's actually more than one channel for information. This is of course why seeking truth and knocking down BS remains such an important part of the MSM mission and why most of us remain chronically disappointed.

I continue to be hopeful that McCain will get critical coverage once we get to the general, which is probably the time its most advantageous for the democrats.
Posted by KathyR | April 3, 2008 8:04 AM
Gee, would it be so hard for Rendell to build up his candidate by extolling her advantages over John McCain? For example, he could talk about Roberts/Alito and how Senator Clinton's choices will be far more balanced and far less political.
I think Senator Clinton would make a good president (hoping for excellent) but every time a campaign supporter like Rendell gets distracted from the main issues, it makes me uneasy.

rendell's fox is fair comments just prove what i have always thought; rendell is just a dick. he is worse than hillary when it comes to saying anything to get elected. this isnt exactly high rhetoric, but the guy pisses me off in the worst way..btw, why do pennsylvanians listen to him? his track record doesnt boast many accomplishments for his constituents. he has spent several months trying to court a high position in a potential clinton admin.
Posted by cbhenderson | April 3, 2008 8:41 AM
Pauo-no not that one said: "(Although the Fox is fair stuff was just silly)."
I disagree, it is the opposite of silly. Faux News is an organ of the republican party, and any Dem who dilutes that very specific message is giving aid and comfort to the opposition. The fact that Dems refused to participate in a Faux News debate, and thus refused to treat it as a real news organization, was important. That action began the process of seriously challenging Faux's credibility and the fraudulent media narratives that they produce. It made Faux News' lack of credibility the story.
For a short-term political tactic, Rendell muddied the storyline, and damaged Dems long-term strategic interests.
Not silly at all.
Posted by wvng | April 3, 2008 8:44 AM
Isn't this the same guy that argued that Hillary should win the nomination despite Obama's delegate lead, because she won the states with the 'most electoral votes'? As if 1) this was the general election already, and 2) winning them in the primary guaranteed she'd win them over McCain in the general?
Posted by Kryptik | April 3, 2008 8:48 AM
Rendell, you can't handle the truth. The more relevant question is whether Publicans and their media are propping up the teetering Clinton campaign in pursuit of their own interests.
Remember Deep Throat's analysis of Watergate – "my God, they were frightened of Muskie and look who got destroyed – they wanted to run against McGovern, and look who they’re running against."
The diff in 2008 is they have a rival D to do all their dirty work for them.
Posted by FlownOver | April 3, 2008 8:53 AM
This is just one more mistake in a campaign full of them. John Edwards and the other candidates who were all but ignored by the media are the only ones with a legitimate complaint. We haven't seen anyone go after Clinton's membership in a secret cult or McCain's radical right-wing fundamentalist supporters get anywhere near the scrutiny Obama's preacher has. No one is looking into their financial background or making a big deal of the fact that neither Clinton or McCain have released their tax returns. The media is filled with former members of Bill Clinton's staff. The media themselves talk about being McCain's base.
If Clinton doesn't return to policy issues, stop the whining and attack the right, rather than liberals, she will blow her chances to follow Obama next time as well.

wvng I don't disagree with much of what you write re/FNC but I guess I don't think Rendell carries that much juice as far as giving legitimacy.
That's why I think "silly" rather than "venal".

I'm guessing no, Ed.
Just out of curiousity, 'tho: Does Clinton get checks from Rupert Murdoch? Why...Yes she does!
Funny how things like that work.

"It's stunning. Does Keith Olbermann get checks from the Obama campaign?"
Coming a week after Senator Clinton sat down with Richard Mellon Scaife I found that a bit rich.

Rendell's solution to every problem in PA is more gambling. He is an idiot. Hey, Ed. How's that samich?
Let's look at the weird media re-alignment that the Clintons have engaged in. First Bill went on Limbaugh's program before the election in TX (though Limbaugh would not deign to be on the air with him), then Hillary meets with Richard Mellon Scaife to court the endorsment of the Tribune-Review, then Rendell is on Faux news telling them how wonderfully fair they have been. It seems pretty clear to me that the right wing media are playing the Clinton campaign big time, but the Clinton campaign actually thinks they are playing the right wing media. Do they really think these people are their friends? Does Hillary really think that if somehow she would manage to wrangle her way into the presidency that she would continue to receive such "fair" coverage?

As someone who lives in PA, I can tell you that Easy Ed isn't all he's cracked up to be. The Philly patronage machine isn't like it used to be. Not only that, but Ed has an ego the size of Manhattan. He's like Hillary. You never know what he really believes. The one thing I do know is that he'll say anything for attention(witness his appearance the last few seasons on the local Eagles TV post-game show). Of course he's gonna kiss Faux's butt. He wants more air time where ever he can get it.

Paul-no(etc), if Rendell hadn't been a party leader as General Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the 2000 presidential election, and if concerted and consistent push-back against fraudulent media narratives (and their purveyors) wasn't one of the most important challenges in this election cycle, I might agree it was just silly to say they are fair.
But Dems have been killed in the last two presidential elections by false narratives churned out by Faux and friends, and then propagated by the rest of the msm. I have no tolerance for any Dem who interferes with our attempts to break that cycle.
Hey Karen, I wonder what you think about AMC's exchange with Glenn Greenwald? It doesn't appear to me that she is, as of yet, quite ready to apply that journalistic skepticism to McCain that she said would certainly happen this time around. Being so embarrassed by all the media McCain fawning in 2000 and all.

Joe's gc,
then again maybe the kids are smarter than dad..
well i dont think it would take a perfect SAT score to accomplish that feat, do you. Though when Murdoch's kid inherits all that cake, well, watch the voting change then....btw, i am not sure if i mentioned it, but rendell is a dick.

I'm not really 'wishing' for anything, bitter, except for people to stop making poor comparisons and pushing bad info...Rupert and Elisabeth Murdoch are not the same people:
I mean, it takes just a minute or two to get background information before making a wild assumption, bitter...

Joe Klein's GC- thanks for the local perspective. I guess I am fighting my instinct to go too far against the fellow Dems when probably sooner rather than later we will be all rowing in the same direction.
That's not to disagree with your sense of what an operator he is nor wvng's weighing of his FNC appearance.
Frankly I supported Edwards and his taking the lead on calling FNC out for what they were was a good thing. Senators Clinton and Obama followed but Edwards was the first to push back.

If she wants to know, she can just ask AMC and get the 4 minute rundown.

As a Republican who voted for Obama, I've only got one thing to say about Rendell: he'd make a great vice-president...for McCain! But wait, Lieberman's got that sewn up, right? You know, it just gets to be sickening these days as to who will sell out any/all principles to get/maintain power. But most politicians like Rendell/Clinton/McCain don't put much stock in self-awareness...tho' they're transparent as hell, which makes them so pathetic when they do these things like going on Fox.

Like Joe Klein's GC, I live in PA and have lived here my whole life. I have a very different view of Ed Rendell. "The Philly patronage machine isn't like it used to be." Personally, I view that as a good thing. When he was mayor, I was driving into North Philadelphia to work every day and one little thing he did that made a big difference in my life was to institute the no graffiti program. Any graffiti was erased within 24 hours. And, you should realize that Ed hasn't been mayor for over eight years. He has done a good job as governor, although some of his proposals were killed by the Republican legislature. Any politician in high office has to have a pretty big ego and Ed is no exception.
He has said over and over that he is not interested in a job in any administration until his term as governor is over in 2011. He has also said that after the candidate is selected, the supporters of the other one should take ten days to sulk and pout and then get off their tails and work to get the Democratic candidate elected against John McCain. He has said, and I have no doubt, that he will work very hard for Obama if he is the nominee.
Posted by ivb | April 3, 2008 11:42 AM
Ed Rendell has lost all credibility with me. I understand the Clinton campaign is under stress, but at this point the only coverage they'll think is fair is fawning coverage of Hillary that says she's the best thing since sliced bread.
Sheesh.
Posted by four legs good | April 3, 2008 11:43 AM
And, in that Pittsburgh Post Gazette interview, after he said that there were some whites who weren't ready to vote for a black man, he said that in Obama's case the new voters he was bringing in would likely make up for that. That part is never quoted.
He also said that there were men who weren't ready to vote for a woman. That is never quoted either.
I don't think fawning coverage is what is wanted, I would be happy with fair coverage.
Posted by ivb | April 3, 2008 11:52 AM
Thanks for reporting this, Karen.
I would never have known this, not watching Fox News (nor "reading" the New York Post after I read an issue apparently written for third-grade reading level), nor Keith Olbermann (since his transformation into an openly pro-Obama/anti-Clinton voice).
My main concern is that Rendell has muddied the waters. This is the kind of working-the-refs crap of which we get accused all the time by mainstream reporters whenever we have a legitimate, objective problems with the constant insertion of conventional wisdom, narrative, stenographed competing claims, trade-based ideology/professional bias, etc. I hope that you understand that Rendell's problem with the coverage is not the same as, say, Greenwald's (or mine, for that matter), Karen.

Karen - a little off-topic. George Stephanopoulos on ABC last night quoted a source indicating the Hillary Clinton, pre-Richardson endorsement, kept telling Richardson, "He can't win, Bill."
Any more context on why Hillary Clinton was making that flat assertion? Why is she so convinced that Obama can't win the general?

I find it pretty Ironic that the national media's favorite Governor goes around complaining about media coverage.
I really don't see why people love his so much. He seems like a pretty typical pol...nothing to really love or hate about him.
My guess is he is loved because he must have been part of the cocktail circuit when he was DNC chair.
But really, there's nothing singular about him.

IVB,thanks for beating me to the punch.
Feminist groups are not berating Rendell for stating the fact that some men will not vote for a women and yet the MSM is all but calling Rendell a racist.
Rendell would also have been right to add "And some folks won't vote for McCain because he's too old".
No matter who runs in the fall, all three of these candidates have an "ism" against them.
It's not Rendell who's racist by the MSM. If they weren't so scared of being portrayed as racist they would not keep taking comments out of context.

Posted by mr albany | April 3, 2008 3:41 PM
stuart, it's true that Rendell doesn't have the same concerns - or motivations - as Greenwald when he complains about the media's political coverage. But the media is biased against Clinton, and all the other candidate's surrogates frequently "muddy the waters" by talking about supposed media bias against their candidate, so Rendell is in no way obligated to hold himself to a different standard and quietly accept the media's bias. And if Rendell and other surrogates don't talk about it, who will? As I've said before, the media is reluctant to report on its own bias.
In the months before he started openly supporting Obama, I was actually starting to become quite wary of Olbermann. I found that I was usually agreeing with the conclusions of his rants about Bush and the Republicans, but I didn't like the loose logic he used to justify his arguments. Because there are so many more Republicans than Democrats in the media who share Olbermann's angry and irrational style, I think many Democrats - myself included - became a little too forgiving of Olbermann's lapses; It seemed nice to have our own crazy staunch Democrat to counterbalance all the Republicans. But of course if we really want to improve things, we need to improve our logic and our arguments, not just accidentally arrive at better conclusions.
Anyway, Olbermann deserves to get some cheques from the Obama campaign...

This is the next paragraph in the blog -- although I guess we'll never hear about this again, nor will anyone try to find another source.
"Yet here's a wrinkle, from a source with direct knowledge of Richardson's conversations with the Clintons: Richardson himself told Sen. Clinton and former President Clinton that he didn't think Obama could win, back when he was (according to the Clintons) telling them earlier this year that he wouldn't endorse Obama.
"Too inexperienced," Richardson said, the source tells ABC News."

Posted by Paul-no not that one | April 3, 2008 5:04 PM
stuart, of course Fox News is not objective. But I imagine what Rendell was referring to is that Fox News is equally - and absurdly - biased against both Obama and Clinton. I don't know if this is generally true, but I have found this to be the case the few times I have managed to watch Fox News for more than 30 seconds. In their coverage of the Democratic election, Fox News is even less fair than the other cable networks, but they do seem to at least balance their bias more equally.
I still think that CNN and the others are better than Fox News. But it's just not a clear-cut judgment. This debate is strongly tied to electability. I, like many Clinton supporters, believe that the anti-Clinton coverage in the MSM is indirectly helping McCain, because Obama is less electable. And it seems that Fox News isn't helping McCain in this indirect way (again, I watch very little Fox News so I'm not sure on this. But many organizations that monitor the media, like CMPA, seem to agree). It does also seem that their direct anti-Democrat bias strongly outweighs the indirect and direct bias seen in the other cable networks. Basically, the MSM is generally anti-Clinton and pro-Obama, except in relation to McCain. And Fox News seems to be both anti-Clinton and anti-Obama. My opinion is that Fox is worse, but it's not ridiculous or nonsensical to suggest otherwise.
Posted by Rose | April 3, 2008 5:22 PM
The corporate media bias is very obvious against Clinton.
jack the obama hack cafferty does a hit piece on the Clintons every single day.
keith obamaman posts at daily obama.
ariana at the obama post was gop and her first site was for President Clintion to resign.
The corporate media gives obama and mcwar a free pass.
obama is outspending clinton, has the corporate media and still can't unite
the dems to win.
Posted by gotalife | April 3, 2008 5:32 PM
gotalife - that is the fault of the idiot Hillary supporters who need to let go of their racism and join the rest of us in supporting our Obama. If Obama is denied his rightful nomination and his Presidency there should be riots in the streets and it will be Hillary and Dean's fault. Hillary needs to bow down and stop her loser campaign and support obama so that we can unite and defeat the evil that is Bush III.
