Biden nails it. Big time.

Joe Klein - I posted this on a previous thread after having problems with this thread. Since it is working now here it is:

Joe Klein's inaccessible post includes this line about Iran: "...the Iranian-supported harassment of U.S. forces by Shi'ite militias..."

To paraphrase the vice-idiot in chief, "So what?" Iran may very well be lending aid to many of the Shia factions but I have yet to see evidence that the aid is contigent on the attack of Americans. More likely, Iran is supporting every Shia faction that has the slightest claim to authority in an effort to maintain good relations as the political process sorts itself out. To continue to maintain that Iran is the paradigm of evil on the basis of the evidence made public so far seems beyond credibility.

And do I even need to mention that, until recently, a great deal of the violence that was directed against Americans was coming from the Sunnis? Is it too much for the media to mention that the Iraqi Sunnis are receiving aid from Saudi Arabia? What Iran is doing is no different than what any other regional power is attempting to do.

They are no saints, of course, but neither are the Saudis. Or the Pakistanis. Or the Syrians.

Or us.

Biden did a fine job in the hearings as well.

We're still waiting for an Emperor Has No Clothes story wrt the independent, free, democratic, ethnically at ease, american base permitting Iraq.

I mean, atrios calls it a pony in the desert, but at some point don't the serious people have to recognize that this scenario is a fantasy?

Ironically, even though I agree with almost every sentiment expressed in the speech, my concetration was distracted by seeing exactly where it could be attacked by hawks. (Maybe I'm picking up some of Joe's bad habits.)

The troublesome spots:
It starts with the very language the President has tried to impose: “the global war on terror.” That is simply wrong. Terrorism is a means, not an end, and very different groups and countries are using it toward very different goals. If we can’t even identify the enemy or describe the war we’re fighting, it’s
difficult to see how we will win.

While I agree that the crucial falure of both BushCo and McCain is to be able to correctly identify our enemies, to flatly say that the phrase 'global war on terror' is wrong is to invite ridicule.

Right now, Iran loves the status quo, with 140,000 Americans troops bogged down and bleeding, caught in a cross fire of intra Shi’a rivalry and Sunni-Shi’a civil war.

Again, he's conveying an unpleasant truth but to refer to our troops as "bogged down and bleeding" is going to distract from his message by creating a negative soundbite.

Among the good spots:
Worse, saying you’re happy to stay in Iraq for one hundred years fuels exactly the kind of dangerousconspiracy theories about America’s intentions throughout the Arab and Muslim worlds that we should be working to dispel

Doesn't anyone else remember that we had permanent basing in Saudi Arabia and that that was the main casus belli cited for Al Qaeda's attacks on us? Clearly, one of the main reasons we attacked Iraq was so that we could have a place to set up permanent bases in the region. Why is this never discussed in these terms?

It’s amazing how little faith this
administration has in the power of America’s ideas and ideals.

All these fronts throughout the Middle East and South Asia are connected. But this administration has wrongly conflated them under one label, and argued that success on one front ensures victory on the others. It has lumped together, as a single threat, extremist groups and states more at odds with each other than with us. It has picked the wrong fights at the wrong time, failing to finish a war of necessity in Afghanistan before starting a war of choice in Iraq.

Again, the mislabelling of our enemies is a constant strategy applied by the White House and there's every indication that Sen. McCain intends to continue the practice.

This is why every time he fails to differentiate Shia and Sunni or relies on the Commander of the wrong theater for advice, he should be called out on it strongly.

Our country can not afford 4 more years of willful ignorance.

Is Iran helping/funding/arming some of the militia's in Iraq. Yep, without a doubt. I remember taking prisoners back in 2003 who spoke Farsi but not Arabic.

However, the "Iran is funding the militia's story" is just a huge smokescreen to hide who's really armed, equipped and funded the insurgency no matter who's been waging it: the American taxpayer.

Every time you see on the news that hundreds of "thousands of weapons are missing in Iraq", or that "tens of millions of dollars are unaccounted for" or, in the single most underreported story of the war, what exactly happened to all of the Iraqi Army's weapons and supplies after we invaded, fired them, and didn't guard any of their depots on the way to Baghdad, you've just been informed that random groups of people in Iraq, (many of whom are hostile to the U.S. or towards other Iraqis) have just won the weapons, explosives, and cash lottery.

Obscuring the role that corruption and ineptitude have played in arming and equipping our foes in the interests of drumming up another war just makes me sick beyond belief.

And again, yes, it is most definitely true that the Iranians are funneling money and arms into Iraq, but so are the Saudis, Jordanians, and Syrians. In other words, every country that shares a border with that unstable mess of a country is looking out for their own national interests by doing what they can to help promote the faction most favorable to them. Pretending that these actions are anything beyond that stretches credulity.

I'm confused: Biden didn't place everything onto a scale of 1 to 10.

But otherwise, it seemed like a good speech. I'm glad a high profile person is coming out and saying these things.
How long before the White House expresses profound disappointment, and attempts to smear his good name?

Seriously though, I agree with you completely. The deadly, criminal incompetence of Rumsfeld and his generals to neglect the enormous stockpiles of munitions on their way to Baghdad is something that has been too soon forgotten. Thank you for bringing it up again.

Also, like you, I have no doubt that Iran is supplying various Shi'ite factions (Shia factions?) with military resources but I have yet to be convinced that they are doing anything different from what any other regional player is doing. I really hope that Joe Klein finds a way to respond to this because it appears that he has swallowed the "Iran is an imminent threat" line without much reflection.

And thanks for going over there and trying to make the best of it. You should have been better served by your superiors.

Can we talk about the point of the comment? The part about how Iran has not really been caught doing anything different from what any other nation in the region is doing wrt Iraq?

Perhaps you have additional evidence or information regarding Iran that you could share with us to make the case for such a belligerent US policy towards them? Perhaps there is something that makes them worse than what Saudi Arabia has been doing? Perhaps we are not just making a play for Iranian oil fields?

Can anyone help me find the edges of this nebulous 'Iranian Menace' before the pro-war media-blitz starts up again?

Which is why I continue to lose respect for McCain as this campaign goes on. Mr. Straight-Talk always fail to mention this little fact whenever the the subject of mercenaries in Iraq comes up.

It's as if he's as determined to start a war with Iran as Bush was to start one with Iraq. All for what? As a normal American taxpayer, I'm not interested in, or paying for, America being the policemen of the world. That used to be a Conservative principle. It would be nice if someone in the media would remind McCain and the Republicans this once in a while. I guess Ron Paul did but they just laughed at him.

Ron Paul garnered a great deal of interest on the Progressive side of politics. His government reform ideas and his realistic view of foreign policy especially. I found the conservative reaction towards him to be, well, informative.

Terrapinion, I think that's why Ron Paul garnered so much enthusiasm across the spectrum. He seemed to be the only candidate in the Republican primaries who was willing to speak against the status quo. To a Democrat, he was the only candidate who even remotely sounded like he spoke for those who think war should be a last resort. But look where that got him. Nowhere. That's why this incarnation of Republicans look like nothing but disaster for the future.

I honor McCain's service, I just question his judgment. There's an old saying that goes something like this - "If all you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail." McCain is military through and through. He seems unwilling to even consider another course.

Marking the end of an era, the United States will soon withdraw about 7,000 U.S. military personnel from Saudi Arabia and terminate a significant military presence there that lasted more than a decade, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced Tuesday

Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki has predicted that up to "several hundred thousand" U.S. troops may be needed to enforce the peace in postwar Iraq, though Rumsfeld's office has said that figure is high. More than 250,000 U.S. military personnel were in the region during the war, though many of those troops have begun to return home.

The U.S. is likely to keep using Iraqi air bases, analysts suggest, and those may be vital if the Bush administration intends to keep pressure on states that it has accused of supporting terrorism and that may now pose the next threat to U.S. interests in the region.

"If you're thinking about blowing up Syria or Iran, all those Iraqi bases are going to be far more useful than a base in Saudi Arabia would have been," said John Pike, director of Globalsecurity.org. "I think the governments of Iran and Syria are going to be very nervous with a large American military presence on their borders."

Joe Biden, the alleged wizard of foreign policy, voted for this debacle. For that, he should shut his fu***** mouth and atone for his sins by pushing for total withdrawal.

Joe wants to put on his Imperial Churchill hat and carve Iraq into 3 states. Hey Joe, it's already happened! And no matter who we support in regard to Kirkuk (or any other resource rich area), there will be a battle for the oil there amongst the arabs, kurds, and turkmen. Just because Joe Biden, The Duke of Delaware, cuts a line in a map, does not mean that the natives will abide by that line.

on Ron Paul, he did a great job with Russert (and I am sure will never be on again because of it).

When Paul said that he'd dramatically cut the size of the military, Russert said "what about iran?" and Paul said, essentially "What about Iran? Iran's not an issue" Russert: "What if they invaded Israel?" Paul: "They're not going to. How could they?"

The problem is not with a plan or lack thereof. The problem is that the current administration and/or Republicans as a whole (I hate to generalize but my entire family ,extended or otherwise, is Republican so i feel like I have a good grip on their views.) think that they are doing the right thing and that a war fought over there is better then a war fought over here.

They are too damn blind or stupid or both to understand that no "war" will be fought over here. Yes, terrorism is everywhere and its the world we live in now because of attitudes like this administration's. Violence solves nothing. Its like the saying in the finance world, Money makes money. Well, Violence makes Violence.

lsumarkb, I agree there will be no war over here. It's a paranoia continually fueled by the MSM and our current politicians.

I'd ask your Republican friends the following - Who are they afraid of and who is supposed to attack us? We have an annual $500 billion defense budget (closer to $700 billion when you count Iraq & nukes which are off-budget). The only 'attack' against this country in decades was 19 guys with boxcutters who hijacked some planes. How many BILLIONS do we need to fend off guys with boxcutters or their leaders who live in caves?

Our whole defense situation is absurd. Eisenhower was right about the military-industrial complex. It's an out-of-control scam.
