Another Big Endorsement for Obama

Hamilton's endorsement points up one way to see the choice that faces voters this year, both in the Democratic primary, and in the general: Do we want someone who wants to fight, or do we want someone who wants to bring people together across divides. I'm hoping that most Americans are really tired of the persistent belligerance of our leaders.

I think the most important thing this endorsement does is give some serious credibility to foreign policy positions of Obama's that the chattering class ridiculed at the time: 1) Obama's willingness to negotiate with rougue leaders and 2) Obama's touch stance on Pakistan.

Hamilton has said Obama was right on both counts. The media, Hillary, and McCain were wrong.

I don't know about the electoral impact in Indiana, but I think this adds credibility to his foreign policy ideas and that will be important going into a general election with McCain.

This is great news for the Obama camp. Hamilton has always been a voice of reason for democrats. But the big question here is, Karen if you covered the first Reagan admin. then you must have been a reporter at the age of 12! (I need to work on my Karma a little bit this week and thought some unabashed flattery might help.)

cbh: We'll take a few years off Karen - she said it was the "latter half," so presumably it was the second Reagan admin she was talking about. Otherwise, I agree with you. It could potentially have even more effect in the general, where the Republicans will continue the Clinton playbook and paint him as naive about national security. It's hard to buy that Hamilton would endorse someone who was naive about national security.

Karen - I didn't take the bait, but yes, knew who you were talking about. I'm a faithful watcher of Hardball, and he talks frequently about his old boss, Tip O'Neill, and how the friendships he had with Republicans were the hallmark of an earlier era. Chris drives me crazy when he asks guests questions and then answers them himself, but he's often insightful and, I think, a naturally generous person who wants this country to work.

Karen - do you have any of your columns/writing from you Jr. High paper? It would be great to see one of them here. And thanks for the subtle reminder (whether you intended it or not) that reporting is a craft that takes time and practice to master.

I'm not exactly impressed by Lee Hamilton, even if Chris Matthews is. His role in recent years has been to be the guy you call when you've got a Republican agenda but need a Sensible Democrat for window dressing. There was so much wrong with the 9/11 Commission that I frankly hold it against him that he didn't resign.

lowellfield: Do I take it you're on the "let's fight" side of the choice I mentioned above? Hamilton's been effective by being less partisan. It's not clear that his resigning would have brought improvements to the 9/11 commission - though I agree that sometimes resigning is honorable and effective.

That may be true, KathyR, but the pre-Gingrich GOP was different than the DeLay/Rove/Bush GOP we've seen in the past 10 years.

Bipartisanship is, indeed, generally a good thing. But when one of the parties goes insane, it's bad for the other party to go supine.

That said, I don't care to look into whether my high regard for Hamilton is unfounded. He's not in Congress anymore, so I'll just keep liking him. Why not?

It will help Barack . Hamilton is right at this time the country does need a uniter not a divider like Hillary.We need to look at Hills track record.And just how many companies that her campaign is in bed with.How many jobs get out sourced.

If March 2003 has proved anything at all it's that the 'chattering classes' are not to be trusted within 100,000 miles of foreign policy debate. Their ridicule remains the best indicator that someone is on the right track.

Elvis - thoroughly agree that the era of intense partisanship was amped up by Gingrich, Delay, et al. But I'm beginning to think the Clintons may have had more to do with it than I thought at the time. Hillary wants us to know she's going to fight. As we've learned, "bring it on" isn't always the best rallying cry. The real question is whether a chastened GOP and a leader like Obama could return comity to Washington.

Here's my advice for you today, Karen: Don't listen to that gossip queen, Chris Matthews.

And here's a free bit of advice: Report on issues. Real issues. Y'know, stuff like the economy and the war--all the stuff the queens like Tweety and Joe Scarborough avoid talking about on their little catty gossip chit chat shows.

I'm an Obama supporter, and in light of both foreign policy and Indiana this is good news. But it becomes increasingly clear with every passing month that Hamilton got rolled on the 9/11 committee and report.

As for Matthews, there's a joke to be made about how he'd manage to put that footnote in his mouth. But I haven't had my coffee yet.

Paul Dirks: I was going to write the same thing. Apparently, Mr. Stengel won't let the Swamplanders write about anything other than Campaign '08. So, here is another question for Senator McCain that Ana, KT, Scherer, Newton-Small, and, of course, Carney will fail to ask:

PPP has Obama up by two points in PA ( http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Penn_Release_040208.pdf ). As far as I can tell PPP has been right on the money in every poll they've done. Of course, things can shift again in three weeks but this looks very good for Obama with Rasmussen and Quinnipiac showing him trending upwards as well. And the thing is he doesn't need to win PA. He just needs to do well and keep Clinton's lead in single digits. Still, I'm starting to see an upset.

Actually the hoops he jumped through in order to be "against" torture while nevertheless making sure that CIA waterboarding was still legal suggests that he somewhat believes that the law still matters.

It's hard to understate just how uniquely bizarre the Addington doctrine is, I don't think many Conservatives even understand the extreme twisting and contortions that the Constitution has undergone in the last seven years.

Not a big deal at all. Don't you know Ohio is a red state so it doesn't account. This is just another example of an old white men ganging up on a woman. Hamilton is obviously a sexist.

Plus Commando Clinton doesn't need any more foreign policy cred since she brought peace to Northern Ireland and led a US envoy under sniper fire in Bosnia.

Agreed, but Conservatives are not the only ones who have twisted the Constitution over the last few decades to suit their own ends. The implied "right to privacy" that was used to justify Roe v. Wade has been widely criticized by Constitutional scholars, including some that generally support abortion rights (as do I). On a wider scale, the currently popular practice of withholding funds from states that do not comply with the wishes of Congress has made a mockery of the "reserved powers" clause of the Constitution. This tactic has been employed by liberals at least as much as by conservatives.

I think this is huge. Jay Rockefeller endorsed Obama last month and that didn't get a whole lot of coverage, which is ridiculous, because he's also another serious, intelligence-minded heavy-weight. Maybe this one will.

Chris Matthews is still excitable, and his judgment usually suspect. But his advise to you to go talk to Lee Hamilton was right on the button.

David Letterman asked McSame difficult questions, like how many Iraqi civilians have been killed by the war there. Why can't the Beltway media types muster the courage to do the same?

For what it's worth here's what two Indiana residents had to say about the effect of this endorsement in Indiana.

This is HUGE in half of S. Indiana (IN-9), where the SUSA poll had Clinton up about 20. He's a legend down here (Interstate is named after him near Louisville) and got reelected by big margins unlike our current Congressman Baron Hill. Hamilton is Hill's mentor, so I wouldn't be surprised if he endorses Obama as well before the 6th. Think Kennedys in MA big... except that Hamilton knows everyone down here on a first name basis in the local political machinery and in the local newspapers, so he can actually deliver votes. It's a nice endorsement nationally as well with all of Hamilton's foreign policy cred.

As a person from Indiana, this endorsement has much more weight than Bayh. I agree with Fro's post that it is like Kennedy's in MA big. Fro is right that it carries more weight in Southern Indiana, but that is where Obama needed the help anyway. This is a major, major pickup in Indiana alone.

Anyways, looking at the excerpt you quoted, I didn't see anything Hamilton said that validated Obama's foreign policy cred...but there's always teh Google:

Hamilton, who co-chaired the commission that investigated the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and headed the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said he was impressed by Obama's approach to national security and foreign policy.

"I read his national security and foreign policy speeches, and he comes across to me as pragmatic, visionary and tough,'' Hamilton said in an interview yesterday. ``He impresses me as a person who wants to use all the tools of presidential power."

Couldn't find the full statement, sorry.

As a side note, I'm thinking that what we are seeing here is a slight 'taking of the sides' within the Democratic Party...Dem pols who did well during the Bill Clinton years siding with Hillary while pre- and post-Clinton folk gravitating towards Obama. Of course, I'm speaking in generalities; Bill Richardson, for instance, being an exception...

Just a thought.
