Whew! What a relief. Now all those racists in Ohio will ignore the color of Obama's skin.

So, Michael, "the McCain campaign still ain’t gonna playing that game." I would like to think you're right, but they may just be playing the "oops, my bad, I really didn't mean to call my honorable colleague a blatherskate" game, or the "Far be it from me to call my honorable colleague an unstrustworthy, frightening black man" game. Maybe "the type of campaign we 'intend' to run" is sort of like Larry Craig "intending" to resign.

How many passes do they get per week on this kind of thing?

I thought about no linking to it, but that seemed worse than linking to it. Readers can decide what to watch and what not to watch. This is the way of the Interwebbing. . . When in doubt, choose more information over less.

And what about that "suspend"? Is that like getting detention? Does that still allow St. John to look magnanimous?

Someone from the Obama campaign should send out a copy of the confession McCain signed in Vietnam and then disavow it a few hours later.

The video was produced by the McCain staffer. He simply linked to it on his unpopular blog.

Hillary surrogates are calling superdelegates using this while McCain takes the high road.

Did you consider bringing up the possibility that McCain is simply trying to appear more honorable in order to gain political points. Is it more honorable to dismiss the staffer quietly, or with a press release? Perhaps I am too cynical, but what is the media if not cynical. I believe it at least deserved a mention in your post.

They, more than some random McCain aide, are responsible for the endless play of these videos without balance or context.

The media's role in this episode has been appalling.

If anyone should be suspended, it should be them.

Alas, they are unaccountable oligarchs who think it is patriotic to to fan the flames of division in this country just so they can pump up the ratings of their flagging industry.

But what brings short-term ratings gain will, in the end, ensure that the next generation of Americans will not consume MSM products as they are currently structured...and the dinosaurs will one day, finally, become extinct.

I didn't watch the "smarmy YouTube attack", but I note that this site has linked to a few of the lightweight Obama promos, like Obama Girl and the Will.I.Am video. Given a choice between a pro-candidate puff piece, a "smarmy" anti-candidate video, and a non-smarmy anti-candidate video discussing failures in their policies, the MSM will invariably choose the first. They're promoting hacks, not real reporters.

For instance, in his previous post, Scherer links to an Obama video without discussing how, for instance, that campaign strictly moderates comments and video replies. Shouldn't Scherer have pointed that out? Or, is it that he just didn't realize it?

Shades of Huckabee's Romney attack ad presented to media, then kinda not played...'Kinda', because it got oodles of press coverage and a little airplay anyways.

The message they want to send gets out, and the tut-tutting of the candidate against the message shows the press where the candidate's heart really is.

I guess we have to accept that Republican hate speech is really not hate speech at all. The word "smarmy" is a euphemism for this practice.

It's pretty clear to me:

If a Republican demogague dabbles in hate speech, and that speech has no historical precedent whatsoever, which isn't even addressed, it's "smarmy".

Excluding the AIDS commentary, if a Black American spouts anti-American sentiments, and the historical precedent IS there, then it's hate speech.

Even the AIDS commentary of Rev. Wright has precedent in the Tuskegee experiments and it's STILL hate speech.

Looks to me that there are two different definitions of hate speech floating around...

I am now convinced I know what is going on. He's too undisciplined to stay on message. The way in which these guys frame their lies is very carefully worked out. That's why Bush repeats himself over and over again and why he won't take follow-up questions. They construct the lies very carefully, and the politician has to repeat them verbatim. When you say "Iran" you follow it with "extremists." You can say "al qaeda" in the sentence before (in fact, you should) and the sentence after. But when you say "Iran" you have to say "extremists."

This is why you can't find a clip of Bush saying "Saddam Hussein was one of the 9/11 conspirators" but that nonetheless, three-fifths of the country thought he was.

And McCain is either too much of a flyboy (see TPM) or too senile to stay on message.

Look, this guy is a terrible presidential candidate. You have to stay on message. I don't care how much the media loves you, you can't go off message over and over again.

At this point, he's embarrassing his BBQ friends--they told us he was sharp, energetic, a cranky pistol.

And it turns out he can't even stay on message.

And that, my friends, is how the McCain campaign introduces a racist video into the mainstream news cycle. CNN, MSNBC and the others have been itching for an excuse to show it (again and again and again...). Now that they have the McCain campaign "suspending" somebody... there's their news hook. We're all the media's suckers, it seems.

MS & AMC must revel in this practice--they know how most of us are going to respond to their Maco-philia but they continue to stir the bag of snakes. Could it be anything other than intentional.

And the media dutifully reported McCain's fine decision, citing his commitment to running a clean campaign and disowning of this horrible video --- and then they showed the name and URL on the Youtube site, just in case anyone needed to see the scurrilous video over which the good man McCain so righteously suspended his campaign staffer.

I'm sure that staffer will be amply rewarded for taking the bullet to get that video "out there." That was, after all, the point.

It *is* pretty much intentional. The goal of the place is to get as many page views as possible. MS and AMC don't care so much about the opinions of us peons, even if it means taking a few hits, as long as we keep coming back six times per day. That's their *job.* To make us come back. Indeed, it does. Here are the details on me being banned by RedState; let me suggest reading them if you think extremely minor league Stalinists are limited to the left. Note that it occured after having posted ~75 diary entries - not comments - and was supposedly due to a temporal ambiguity in someone else I quoted. However, RS doesn't seem to have realized I was quoting someone else. And, the quote source has since been quoted at RS. And, since I was one of the few there who was anti-Bush, there were clearly other reasons for it.

As for Obama, it isn't that I've been "banned" from leaving comments on his videos. It's that they only let the complimentary comments through. I know that a minor functionary-type such as grape_crush wouldn't understand something like that, but - should Scherer wish to finally be a a real reporter - he might consider mentioning it.

And, grape_crush, in the future please consider not wasting everyone's time.
