Get thee to Vegas, John McCain

I have a story up today about the remarkable two-month run of luck that made John McCain the Republican nominee. To wit:

Almost everything broke his way: Mike Huckabee won Iowa, crippling the powerhouse campaign of Mitt Romney. Rudy Giuliani abandoned New Hampshire, allowing his moderate supporters to shift to McCain. Fred Thompson stayed in the race until South Carolina, bleeding enough votes away from Huckabee to allow McCain to win that key state. Even Huckabee seemed to cooperate, devoting crucial days to a foolhardy effort in Michigan and swearing off any negative attacks on McCain before he bowed out of the race Tuesday night.

And on Tuesday McCain got the greatest gift of all: An increasingly nasty Democratic nomination fight that will last at least through April. Now all McCain has to do is figure out how to use a normal teleprompter like everyone else.

You forgot to add:

"And the media would obsess on Louis Farrakhan and his non-relationship with Barack Obama, while beat reporters like Michael Scherer all but ignored the fact that McCain spent more than a year soliciting the support of John Hagge, a noted anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic, apocalyptic minister -- only to appear with him to blithely accept his endorsement."

But the man does know how to barbecue on a propane grill.

You see Michael,

YOU ARE THE GREATEST GIFT of all for John McCain.

ivb:

YOU ARE THE GREATEST GIFT of all for John McCain.

Indeed. It's really the long history of this. I just heard someone on the BBC say that there are three progressive candidates in the race now. Clinton, Obama, and McCain.

Why on earth would anyone think McCain was in the least progressive based on his total record, if not for the fact that the press has been selling him as a maverick, someone who sticks with his principles, and a centrist?

But the biggest break, of course, is that the national press absolutely refused to break their liplock on his delicious barbecued ribs.

There, fixed that for you.

I'm willing to question the notion that the drawn-out fight on the Dem side is going to be that harmful. Certainly if the tone of the campaign deteriorates much more, it could but it's also going to keep whoever the eventual nominee is in the spotlight for a longer time. And even CW suggests that turnout and high involvment helps the Dems.

Time4Tolerance:

Hillary will defeat McCain easily regardless of the teleprompters used.

Yes she will!
Yes she will!
Yes she will!

Elvis Elvisberg Author Profile Page:

I wanted to make the point that Paul Dirks made-- sure, obsessive blog-readers are all taken in by the amazing nastiness of doom among the Dems, but it's not really that bad, in historical perspective.

I'm not too pleased that Clinton's anti-Obama stuff is so GOP-friendly, and he's done a little of that too, on health care, but it's not established that it's so terrible once the general election rolls around.

The contrast between the facts of Obama's distance from Farrakhan and McCain's solicitation of Hagee, the relative power and evil of each deranged cleric, and the media's treatment of the two, is truly astonishing. That's a pretty lucky break for McCain.

Jim, Foolish Literalist:

The Hagee thing is a media story as much as a political one. Specifically a Tim Russert issue. And that's McCain's biggest stroke of luck: The political media is (loudly) dominated by doughy, aging boomers who feel guilty about ditching Vietnam, have massive issues with their daddies, and get a little thrill when McCain joshes with them.

jayackroyd Author Profile Page:

I'm with Paul and Elvis. There's nothing that Obama and Clinton will about each other that approaches what's coming in the general. If anything, it helps Obama, because he is going to have to deal with some really nasty issues in the general.

Clinton will use innuendo. McCain will use racist surrogates. Obama needs to toughen up.

I don't think it makes a difference to Clinton. The Republican narrative is set up already. I do think Obama may introduce copresidency "The Clintons" narrative that will presage the Republican attacks.

Note also that Clinton has opened up the dream team possibility today.
http://thepage.time.com/clinton-on-cbs-early-show/

I don't think this is particularly constructive on her part at this moment in time. But it is interesting that she left the possibility open.

The election is over. The plutocracy won. You can put away your placards and buttons now. It has been determined that only one of three people can become the next President of the United States. Each one of these people has committed to:

Increase defense spending

Maintain a massive secret intelligence establishment that operates outside the law

Keep health care in the hands of profit-seeking corporations

Preserve the influence of big money over American politics

Maintain energy dependence on foreign oil

Continue the concentration of broadcast media in the hands of a few corporations

Sustain the exporting of productive jobs to offshore workers willing to accept lower wages and poorer conditions

James, Los Angeles:

Very poor piece, Scherer. It is completely devoid of meaningful content, it is shallow, fawning, and superficial. You do nothing whatsoever to inform or educate your reader or to provide context or background. It reads like a big, dizzy Gee Whiz! piece -- "Gee! Whiz! McCain's so lucky, dude! And cool, too!"

Disappointing. Very disappointing, especially from you.

Enceladus:

Ah, yes: McCain is lucky and attracts good fortune.

Except when he isn't and doesn't.

stringer:

Please don't take this the wrong way but is Joe Klein weeping for joy and hugging John McCain? Has he regained his "maverick" status?

Or is he over at Team Clinton, basking in the light of all that experience and knowledge which he knew would break through in the end.

(Kidding Joe Klein. You clearly know what you're talking about on foreign poicy.)

KathyR:

Jackaroyd -

Do you think perhaps she leaves the possiblity of this ticket open so that Obama supporters will be willing to vote for her thinking they could get him too?

Also, for those paying only marginal attention to the race, it's one of those "I'm so honored to be here with Barack Obama" things that's designed to obscure the viciousness of her attacks.

"What do you mean I've been attacking Barack. I've even said I'd be willing to be on a ticket with him."

Southern Bell:

Michael, what nonsense.

The longer the race is on between Obama and Clinton the more fired up Dems get. Plus, it's much better that anything that can be used against Obama comes out now than in the general election. Clinton is doing everyone a favor, including Obama, by making it tougher for him to seal the deal.

Look, there is no way Obama can remain above the fray. When the 527s start coming after Obama in the general election, he needs to be prepared to fight back and fight back hard.

Howard Fineman just posted an incredible stupid piece about stuff Clinton can use against Obama. Hello? Howard? Do you honestly think whatever ammo HRC has in her arsenal is more destructive than what the Repugs have planned? Nonsense.

The bias of the media against the Dems is showing in the new meme. The only way the Dems can get hurt by the ongoing campaign is if the MSM continue to give John "BBQ" McCain a free pass and fawn all over him.

jayackroyd Author Profile Page:

Something like that KathyR. She knows it ain't gonna happen. I think she'd be willing to put Obama on the bottom, but there's no way he'd put her there. Richardson helps him at least as much in the Southwest, and would be a useful adviser, rather than a competitor for attention.

HH, I wouldn't put it quite so floridly, but you're largely right, IMO. OTOH, do see Stephen Roach in today's NYT. It's gonna take structural changes to get out of this recession. Reality may overtake commitment to the hegemony project.

Also, '10 might be a very interesting primary year for the Bush Dogs if things unfold as you project.
Employment income, after taxes, has to rise for the bottom two quintiles if we are not to suffer the Japanese lost decade. If Roach sees this (he doesn't say that directly, but that's the upshot), then it may be that it's the economy stupid trumps the F22 program.

What Elvis Elvisberg said.

HH:

Jayackroyd,

"Reality may overtake commitment to the hegemony project."

NFW, with militarism fever still raging in America. Today's NYT OpEd page had an amazing piece from the booming Vietnam revisionism industry pointing out that the Tet Offensive would not have ended the war if Westmoreland had only done a better job of managing expectations. By this insane logic, if the Petraeus (don't promise too much) approach had been taken before Tet, we could still be in Vietnam.

The American electorate is now completely raving mad, having decided to cope with our pending economic collapse by the political equivalent of ordering another round of drinks and firing guns into the air. The stench of Casarism is everywhere, with Congress eager to give the ridiculous Bush more spying power, and the only choice is which strongman (or strongwoman) to "elect" to replace Bush.

America simply won't quit its violence addiction until economic events kick our ass. The election horserace is entirely irrelevant to this necessary attitude adjustment, since all three candidates are militarism-friendly. Make no mistake, McCain is a Vietnam revisionist candidate. He represents the unspoken belief that America errs only when it fails to display sufficient ferocity and tenacity. This is a big mistake. Obama and Clinton have to be even more ferocious about building up and USING our military to counter charges of "weakness." On which sled do you wish to ride to Hell?

If you substitute "killing foreigners and seizing their resources" for "strong on defense," you possess the magic decoder for comprehending the current politics of American militarism.

this is a nice group photo without anyone identified.

The photos that McCain's daughter was allowed to take (although press was not allowed to on this on-the-record event) include a number of press people.

http://mccainblogette.com/

Three new IDs, one name only. Shannon and Gerald from the AP. Khue from Newsweek.

We should probably coordinate this by email. I'm at jay@ackroyd.org. I've reached out to some other people, so I'll compile the list, crediting you, of course, with the idea. I've put up a post linking to your BBQ post at Glenn G's post, but that has scrolled to second position, and will be epu'd.

Anyone else with ids of the people in the group photo, send them on. Next post by Ana, I'll put up a reply asking for ids from her.

At an event that was entirely on the record by people who write, publicly, about McCain, there shouldn't be a problem having Ana let us know who they are.

Smedley,

I take no joy in looking at unhappy facts, but I don't think that one can "compromise" with the material world. If petroleum is going to deplete at a rate of 5% per year, starting in 2015, having a program in place to reduce our consumption by 1% a year won't work.

The bubble that the Time Magazine people live in has thick walls, but events will eventually pierce it. The sooner these people wake up, the better off we will all be, because they still control the opinions of many information-poor people.

Kunstler's latest column poses the key question:

The danger is that the public will want to mount a kind of last stand effort to defend a way of life that has no future under any circumstances, and they will ask the president to lead that last stand.

Actually, I think you're wrong about that. The poll numbers are strongly against the occupation. The problem is that elected officials are not representing their constituents. If this were really the case, Clinton and Obama would not be obfuscating their plans in Iraq.

The stench of Casarism is everywhere

Did I mention I saw Macbeth last night? Eerie.

Yeah, that's why I suggested you take a look at the Roach piece. When he is suggesting a public works program, he thinks economic events are kicking us in the ass.

Remarkable.

KathyR:

wow. thanks for the link to meghanblogette, JA.

There is no way, NO. WAY. the press is not paid off by Uncle John's little feasts. And they've been going on for years.

No, they don't want to see themselves as paid off, they will all deny it, and they have given McCain a relatively free ride. If they bring up a story they feel they've done their job, and then it's politely dropped.

If the press decides at some point over the next few months to do some persistent reporting on him a lot of people will be surprised, and the Republicans won't have had a process that brought much of it out.

It is, I'll admit, very hard to call out someone who endured what I'm quite certain I could not have, and I suppose the press thinks that's the reason they're soft on McCain, rather than the Sedona Sunshine.

Jayackroyd,

"The poll numbers are strongly against the occupation."

The poll numbers are bull$hit. People don't express disreputable sentiments in polls. If people were vigorously opposed to the war, you would see a half million demonstrators in front of the White House and tear gas clouds around the presidential nominating conventions. If the poll numbers were an accurate reflection of American militarism, John (100 years in Iraq) McCain would be polling negative numbers. Instead, he is competitive with both "antiwar" Democrats.

The key question is "What will happen when America loses easy access to cheap fuel?" Current indications are that the American public will demand a military "solution." That could get a lot of us killed.

McCain's campaign has been so embarrassingly incompetent, I can't imagine how you guy's will pull off the "Big Mo" narrative that's getting set. You do a good job of showing how McCain became the last one standing, rather than through any real finesse -- compare that to the scrap going on in the Democratic Primary. Whoever takes that jewel is going to hone some pretty decent knife-fighting skills that will be more than a match for the Forrest Gump McCain campaign.

McCain's strategy for winning over conservatives has been to make himself synonomous with Bush, which to the independents who supported him (like myself) back when he was getting tarred for his brainwashing and illegitimate black daughter, is the ultimate sell-out of his principles. Kow-towing to the same folks he earned his maverick cred criticizing was just the gravy and a hearty serving of crow.

Not only is he the only pol in the US, other than Joe Leiberman, who whole-heartedly supports Bush's handling of this war, but we've just touched the surface of his campaign finance hypocrisy. Having lived in AZ, and voted for McCain, after Keating 5, I can tell you the whole campaign finance stick was simply a re-branding to salvage his reputation from those financial dealings. Ultimately, I don't think one could fault him much for what happened in Keating 5, but the reformer was never a personal passion so much as a PR play that worked too well.

As far as organization, take a look at the mess he got himself into over the matching funds. I have no doubt the no-accountability-for-conservatives environment of DC and the MSM will allow McCain to violate the law and withdraw without consequences, but that doesn't change the fact that he got himself in that mess, and we'll remind people of it, even if you won't.

So... I don't see how McCain gets to do much more than fade into the background during the much sexier horserace of Democratic primary, unless his base (the press) offers an assist.

Obama can't stay above the fray. Americans don't want a president who stays above the fray, they want somewhere who will get in there and fight hard (and somewhat dirty) if necessary.

I do believe the anti-war sentiment is strong. And if there was a draft starting tomorrow and if the economy keeps heading for the toilet I also think we will get large anti-war demonstrations on a regular basis.

Americans are just now starting to equate our financial situation with the war. Even if the surge "holds" most are not going to want to throw massive amount of money down the Iraq hole.

One more time, Michael (and I am going to keep at it until you do your damn job):

Senator McCain was charman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs when the Jack Abramoff shenanigans were going on. As you should know, but are apparently pretending not to know, Abramoff and his pals Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist were playing Indian tribes for chumps in an extortion scheme. Does this ring a bell? McCain was in a position of influence in this realm. He is sitting on hundreds of documents that implicate many of his fellow Republicans (and a few Democrats). When will anyone in the Big Media ask him about this? Could it be that he, St. John of Sedona, is also implicated? Will we ever know?

I have now officially given up on Ana. Apparently unbeknownst to her, she has been bought off. Congratulations to the McCain campaign; BBQ is the walking-around money in Arizona.

Michael Scherer:

Smedley,

The McCain sponsored report on Abramoff is here:
indian.senate.gov/public/_files/Report.pdf

It is a fantastic read, and rather unforgiving in its appraisal of the roles of several members of Congress, including Republicans like Reps. DeLay and Ney, not to mention Norquist and Reed. The report, and the McCain hearings that proceeded it, played a major role in establishing the "culture of corruption" theme that allowed Democrats to take back the House and Senate in 2006. The timing of the hearings also had a fatal effect on Reed's effort to be elected to office in Georgia.

All that said, McCain did say early in the process that he would not focus his investigation on the complicity of other members of Congress. His argument at the time was that this was not in the purview of his committee, though he was also clearly trying to settle the nerves of his colleagues. This is a decision for which McCain can be fairly criticized, but only in the context of the work he did do to expose the corruption. And there is no evidence in the Abramoff emails , or anything else that I am aware of, suggesting that McCain played a role in the jailed lobbyist's machinations.

See here for more: www.factchecked.org/.../LessonPlans/CombatingCultureCorruption/student.handout.3.mccain.target.members.pdf

smedley:

Michael, thank you for responding. And I know that this can start to look like a pissing contest, but:

McCain limits the scope of the investigation and keeps the media (hence, public) from seeing documents that were obtained during the investigation and you write that he can be criticized for this (cover-up). Ya think? Don't those documents belong to the American people?

ivb:

Michael, Digby's blog today can give you a real sense of why we are all so suspicious of every little thing written about McCain.

"The Warrior King

by digby

Bush just endorsed McCain and sounded like he's on a meth bender. He couldn't let McCain have the spotlight.

If I were McCain I'd be hoping that's the last time I have to appear with Junior during this campaign. He's a reminder of everything people loathe about Republicans. St. John didn't look too comfortable, I must say. (But then he never does...)

Naturally, the gasbags are doing backflips over John W:

Brian Williams: You know what I thought was unsaid ---they took their position Chris, we're seeing the replay --- they end up in this spot and the sun is coming is just from the side and there in the shadow is John McCain's buckled, concave shoulder. It's a part of his body the suit doesn't fill out because of his war injuries. Again you wouldn't spot it unless you knew to look for it. He doesn't give the same full chested profile as the president standing next to him. Talk about a warrior...

Chris Matthews: You know, when he was a prisoner all those years, as you know, in isolation from his fellows, I do believe, uhm, and machiavelli had this right --- it's not sentimental, it's factual --- the more you give to something, the more you become committed to it. That's true of marriage and children and everything we've committed to in our lives. He committed to his country over there. He made an investment in America, alone in that cell, when he was being tortured and afraid of being put to death at any moment -- and turning down a chance to come home.

Those are non-political facts which I think do work for him. When it gets close this November, which I do believe, and you likely agree, will be a very close contest between him and whoever wins the Democratic fight. And I think people will look at that fact, that here's a man who has invested deeply, and physically and personally in his country.

Williams: Absolutely, Couldn't agree more. Of course the son of a Navy Admiral, a product of Annapolis who couldn't wait to become a Navy aviator...

In case you think that isn't emphatic enough, John Amato reported this last night:

After McCain won Ohio and Texas—Tweety said this a few minutes ago:

Matthews: If you look at the box this year it came in, which is marked “change.” It is ironic that the man who represents the least change is in the solidest position to be the next president right now.

In case anyone wonders why the press has been so gleefully building up and then tearing down Democratic candidates this season, this might just be a hint. McCain media manlove knows no bounds."

http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/warrior-king-by-digby-bush-just.html

smedley:

Geez, ivb. Were they on camera? Is there video? Did Brian wipe a tear from Chris' eye? Will they replay that image in their heads tonight as a substitute for their viagra?

ivb:

I suspect this was today at the White House, so if we are "lucky" we may get to see it again!

Michael Scherer:

I want all such documents to be public, but we reporters don't always have our way. That said, I think all the Indian affairs docs were handed over to the Finance Committee, and the Dems on the hill have them too. Also the Justice Department obviously have them. And these things leak with some frequency when there is news to be made.

TomT:

Michael, could you explain why McCain continues to get a free pass on Hagee.

Any form of explanation would be fine, even if it involves extensive analogies with various types of high-school stereotypes.
