Purchasing an Apple wireless router, even one branded "EXTREME" isn't really the solution to your woes. As jayackroyd pointed out above, Verizon hasn't been cut out of the loop here at all.

You're like, my wife's age. You are therefore as thoroughly capable of setting up, tearing down and troubleshooting wireless connectivity as she is, without it being your primary area of expertise (also like her, although she does have access to her own "Personal, Royal-Imperial Tech Support with Advantages plus Massage Upgrade (tm)" program, courtesy of sharing an apartment with me).

That semi-humorous rebuke aside, thank you so much for the audio, it's very much appreciated.

thanks for following up on that comment s_z, because it reminded that now verizon won't provide her with any support. they're blame the unsupported device, and hang up.

Had a three month long nightmare with verizon, helping a McCain aged relative. Eventually (VERY eventually) we determined that it was the DSL router.

Then they said, "so that will be 65 dollars for a new one." Never, in all my experience with telecom companies, have I been charged for their equipment. In fact, there's a Cisco 2600 sitting on my desk that's about to go on ebay, because ATT never bothered to pick it up.

Those concerned about my connectivity: Yes, Verizon is still a part of the picture. But the problem they were trying to help me with was in trying to get my Nextel DSL modem/wireless router to play nice with the various WiFi systems we have around here: a networked Wii, a new set of wireless speakers, an existing AirPort express, etc...

The AppleCare people (who are usually awesome) diagnosed the problem as my needing to manually reconfigure the Nextel modem. This is where Verizon came in. They were unhelpful.

I called back Apple, and they suggested, that, maybe, if I just used the modem to connect to the internet, then used an Airport as my router, I might have an easier time. I didn't totally need to get a NEW Airport to do this, but my old AirPort Express has been giving me trouble lately, too. So: More money for The Steve.

Also? Ta-da! SnorgleNet is now up and running at Casa de Cox-Lehmann. It's significantly faster and, I am told, much more secure.

It did take me all f'in day tho.

@jayackroyd: I'm afraid that I'm missing your joke, here. I already use the last 4 digits of pi as the PIN for my ATM card. What are the last 4 digits of e? Are they more secure? ;)

I also wanted to say that "the last 4 digits of pi" is a funny thing to say, and that I too plan to act like I came up with it in conversation. I might make it "the last 15 digits of pi," though.

This is regarding Terry McAuliffe email for supporters regarding Joe McCarthy comment!

They are asking supporters to send them money because Obama is attacking Clinton personally. Please ask the Clinton campaign how the party will be united when their supporters are sending money to show their outrage over Obama. I am pretty sure people who are donating money now will never vote for Obama if he is the nominee. Same with Obama supporters who will hate her for this kind of tactics. They are splitting the democrats.

One of the things I get pissed at verizon about is that when we finally got the new frickin' device, paying 60 bucks for it(but it had wifi, which is good), it had been pre-configured for WEP. What was preconfiguration? The MAC address followed by trailing zeroes. What was the device username and password? admin admin.

When I called up to get this info so I could open up the device (there's no reason that my relative's daily 18 minutes checking email and quarterly shopping research on the web should prevent someone else from getting on line--and during this period of uncertainty we'd been riding on a neighbor's line), the tech support person acted filled with dismay that I'd open the line.

Duh. As if it were secure before.

No wonder you had a problem - the mathematical constant pi has no last 4 digits, nor any next-to-last digits. It is infinitely long, similar to the the Verizon wait times.
