Good stuff, JNS. I was a little worried that people so quickly assumed CTV had it wrong. They're a trustworthy outfit. As for the conservative Canadian government leaking -- that is interesting and maybe a lesson for the Democratic nominee, whoever it is, in the general election, that only McCain can trust our neighboring government in the chilly north.

I know it's fun to catch politicians as they re-position themselves from primary to general elections, but this story actually makes me feel better about Obama's candidacy. That is, unless this means he actually favors NAFTA, in which case he is a LIAR and deserves to be called out on it.

My one concern about Obama was that he would be too beholden to labor unions and other special interests of that type (since they've played such a big part of his campaign), but perhaps this story indicates that he won't blindly cater to them, either.

I am curious, though, about whether this story will put a stop to all the op-eds I've seen criticizing Obama's populism. Guess those guys jumped the gun a bit too early on that issue.

Please go look up the use of the phrase "begs the question" in your basic stylebook. You repeatedly use it backwards.

Now there's a sentence you don't see too often. Seriously, her credibility is below zero. Doesn't mean this story is inaccurate, just that I trust nothing she puts out anymore.

This sounds about right. There are different considerations regarding trade deals b/w US & Canada, which has relatively stringent safety/health/enviro & wage standards, and the US & Mexico, for example, which doesn't. So, taking a strong stand on renegotiating NAFTA & other trade deals, while at the same time telling Canada to chill because it won't affect our trade relationship with them a great deal, is perfectly consistent (and smart).

I think Obama should come to the back of the place, Jay, and say, "Goolsbee did not say that......as far as I know. I take him at his word."

This does feel like a gotcha thing. There are problems with NAFTA. There are problems with border crossings in the new US security regime. It's goals (and I was and probably still am a supporter) have not been achieved. And things have changed.

It makes perfect sense that Obama (or Clinton or McCain) will engage in negotiations to improve NAFTA meeting its goals.

But that doesn't fit the sound bite kinda question that Obama is gonna get asked.

Irked today by the story I read about 60 minutes, where Clinton was pressed repeatedly to say whether or not Obama is a Muslim. There's a point where the question is just beyond stupid, and pressing it is well beyond stupid.

This case is one that will be hard to ask a useful question. Bad timing for Obama; I'm sure this is an issue in OH.

A Dec. 10 wire story took a look at a recent Democratic debate and concluded that Democrats "sometimes leave out the facts" in their critiques of the Bush administration. For example: "[S]everal of the nine candidates criticized the tax cuts George W. Bush pushed through Congress. But none mentioned that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan . . . has cited those cuts as a reason for the recent economic growth." Shocking! As we all know, Obama has admitted his faulty judgment in dealing with Tony Rezko (he has called it a “bone headed mistake”), and has claimed to have given all of this ‘dirty money’ to charity. What he has NOT done is provide true transparency regarding his other business relations involving Rezko and, he has not provided satisfactory information regarding what has happened to all of that money that he DID receive from ‘other sources’ and that may soon be proven by the courts to have also come from illegitimate sources. As the trial commences and participants begin to testify, it would be quite interesting to see how much work the Mainstream Media will have to do to keep this story under wraps.”

I for one don't appreciate this blatant attempt to smear Mr. Obama and his completely above board campaign. It is no surprise that there are others wishing to start the process of working with the next President, but it certainly does not merit this kind of negativity. I cannot help but wonder if Hillary or McCain is not behind this...

Jay, you've failed to answer the very basic question of why anyone should care about this. Why would Obama be interested in making assurances to Canada before he's even the nominee?

Talk is cheap at the top when it comes to trade. The only trade rules actually enforced are those that benefit big corporations. If you want a rule enforced you have to first pay off enough people in Congress for them to get behind it.

As an example, for many years Canada has been raiding film/tv jobs from the U.S. Until the dollar tanked that had taken billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs by paying American producers kickbacks (subsidies.)

A grassroots group of workers in Hollywood toiled for seven years to bring our case before our do-nothing U.S. trade rep in the form of a 301(a) petition. We managed to raise $300,000 from Hollywood unions and engaged the best trade attorneys in DC, but Congress just looked the other way which they always will unless you pay them. Last September we lost the case. The U.S. Trade Rep. declared it too complicated.

Hillary, McCain, and Obama looked the other way too. We need a renewal of the energy of the 1960's to take these unfair trade agreements head on and destroy them. If you don't have the dough to purchase some lawmakers, the only alternative is to take it to the streets.

At the press conference, don't ask about the impact on voters. Ask about something much more important: Obama's support for Bush's SPP (spp.gov), aka "NAFTA on steroids".

At this point in time, Obama supports that completely optional Bush scheme. It's something he could easily oppose. So, based on the NAFTA-related impact of "free" trade on Ohio and other states, why is he supporting a new scheme that he doesn't have to support?

We’re hoping that Obama will hold a press avail of his own at the next stop in Dallas this afternoon so we can directly ask him about the imbroglio and if they’re worried that this might put off blue collar voters.

Harper would certainly work better with McCain than the leader of any other Canadian party, so having a Republican in the presidency does favour the Canadian government. But I don't think there's any evidence that this was leaked by someone higher than a random civil servant. Canadians are generally happy with NAFTA although not with how the Bush government has abused it, so to hear McCain talk about upholding it made them happy.

Okay... the point here is not whether the Obama camp spoke to the Canadians. It is not even about Clinton speaking to the Canadians.

The point is that Obama has allowed this saintly aura about him to take an unprecedented force in American politics. His absolute and holier than thou denial of any politicking on his part is unnerving and something like this is highly blemishing to his "I am the second coming" presentation of himself to and by his followers.

And by the way, somebody asked why would the Canadians talk to someone who is not the nominee?

A March 27 Associated Press article by reporter Nedra Pickler -- headlined "Is Obama All Style and Little Substance?" -- falsely claimed that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has "delivered no policy speeches" while campaigning "and provided few details about how he would lead the country." In fact, on March 2, Obama delivered what the Chicago Tribune described as a "major policy speech on U.S.-Israel policy," and news reports indicate that in campaign speeches across the country, Obama has offered policy proposals on Iraq, education, the environment, energy, and health care.

Moreover, the article itself undermined Pickler's claim. The third to last paragraph of the article noted that during the campaign: "Obama has offered a plan to get troops out of Iraq, beginning with a drawdown in May that would extended through a March 2008 goal of redeploying all combat troops. The plan is unlikely to become reality with Bush in office, but is what Obama says he would do if he were in the Oval Office today." Indeed, Obama even mentioned his Iraq plan during his February 10 address announcing his candidacy.

On Today, Kelly O'Donnell uncritically reported President Bush's claim that the formation of a new government in Iraq is a "fundamental change." Similarly, the Associated Press' Nedra Pickler noted that Bush "embraced the new leadership in Iraq as a turning point in the war." In fact, the Bush administration has touted several purportedly pivotal moments since the beginning of the Iraqi occupation, suggesting each time that the situation in Iraq was about to improve.

I think the right-leaning, bush-sympathizing canadian prime minister may be trying to rough up Obama because he is likely to be the dem nominee...and it looks like the candian opposition is not too happy about it.

NAFTA might actually work if all sides were actually honoring the agreement and not just paying lip service to it. Then again over regulation of everything under the sun will never grow the economy either.

So why didn't Obama take time to ask why Canada was bringing back privatized healthcare since they have such a "fine" healthcare system that operates in a "timely" and "orderly" fashion? Tort reform could help solve healthcare problems here but you will never get tort reform with all the useless lawyers on Capitol Hill running the show since they have to have other jobs to fall back on if their constituents realize how worthless they are and don't re-elect them.

Obama must be asking himself why anyone with high intelligence, character and ideals would ever bother running for high office in a country so full of petty and ankle-biting fools.

Its no mystery why the memo was leaked. The Conservative government in Ottawa sees the opportunity to make some mischief in the Democratic nominating process and perhaps push their own misadventures off the Canadian news media.

The question then is to whom do you leak the memo?

Pickler is the obvious choice. She has excellent conservative bona fides (see http://tinyurl.com/yrzjx6): she has a long track record of tendentious articles that favor the GOP over Democrats. Because she is covering the Democratic presidential candidates for AP she is the perfect conduit for the materials.
