I think he is playing this very carefully with Hagee -- who has thousands of faithful followers. And they will follow the dog whistle and vote for McCain. I am much more concerned about this from Dick Polman's blog.

"And yet, the latest New York Times-CBS News survey tells a far more nuanced story. Despite McCain's staunch cheerleading for the war; and despite the fact that he has suggested that U.S. troops may have to remain in Iraq for 100 years; and despite the fact that senior Pentagon figures are publicly complaining that our military is being dangerously stretched because of the war, 58 percent of the surveyed registered voters said, nevertheless, that they have confidence in McCain to make the right decisions about Iraq. That's one point higher than Barack Obama (whose antiwar stance is supposedly more in sync with general public sentiment), and eight points higher than Hillary Clinton.

In the same poll, 56 percent said they had confidence in McCain's ability to deal wisely in an international crisis. That's nine points higher than Obama, and 17 points higher than Clinton. And when asked whether McCain "would be an effective commander in chief of the nation's military," 80 percent said yes. That's 11 points higher than Obama, and 26 points higher than Clinton.

The latest Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll shows similar results. Among independent voters - who have been strongly antiwar for the past 18 months - the hawkish McCain is still viewed more favorably than either Obama or Clinton. When all respondents were asked which candidate would best protect the country from terrorists, McCain beat Obama by 37 percentage points. When asked who has the "right experience" to be president, McCain beat Obama by 31 points. When asked who would "best handle the situation in Iraq," McCain still won, beating Obama by 13 points.

This tells us several things: (1) Voters' base-line respect for McCain's character trumps whatever string disagreements they may have with his Iraq stance. And (2) Democrats who are pumped for the autumn election would be well advised not to pop the champagne corks prematurely, because McCain's abiding popularity among independents could make some of the blue states more competitive. In other words, this race could be very close."

McCain OPENLY solicited and begged this guy to support him, despite his abhorent views and then flew down with his wife to hug him and cuddle up with him.

He's no different really than Farrakhan, yet McCain is given a relative free pass, when his efforts to curry favor were much, much, much more active and repellant.

It is a blatent double standard applied to McCain that again shows the press bending over backward for the guy.

I remember seeing Hagee on God's Warriors, the CNN special with Christiane Amanpour. I found it very scary. The video clips on the CNN website don't include that part. They only have the interview with Falwell, but the transcript has the text. There is an interview with Falwell, one with Carter, a small break, then Hagee. It's not as chilling without the video, but...

Anyone paying attention knows that McCain is a gutless, hypocritical, opportunist coasting on the adoration of flabby, middle-aged pundits who are in love with his 'toughness. From his endorsement of Bush in 2000, his flirtations with the Democrats from 2001-04, his cave in on MCA and waterboarding, etc., etc,. etc.

This, as Attaturk and others have mentioned, is as much a media story as a campaign story. Will Monsignor Russert have as much obsessive scorn for McCain's far more active embrace of Hagee, than of Obam's not-vigorous-enough denunciation of Farrakhan? And will anyone mention the Republicans' longstanding alliance with Hagee, compared to the Democrats' sometimes desperate efforts to distance themselves from the far less influential Farrakan.

How about renounce and deject.

I like it: McCain "honorably" invites a Crazy Talk Radio host to speak to an audience, honorably asks him to throw the audience some "red meat," and then honorably "disses" the guy -- after the audience has gone, and only the reporters remain. Only McCain could do something so dishonorable in such an honorable fashion.

This is an interesting political situation for McCain, who angered wingnuts by--honorably--dissing Cincinnati talk show host Bill Cunningham earlier this week.

He honorably backtracked as soon as he was caught.

Joe, after thirty-eight years of life, much less professional journamalism, a person ought to be too old for starry-eyed hero-worship.

Is it honorable for everyone to knowingly hire racists, only firing them when the political pressure becomes too great?

Good catch on that Hitler excommunication thing. I am sure that is wrong. If it were true the Catholic Church would have made quite a bit more hay with it over the years. I don't have a copy handy but I recently read Chris Hitchens' "Why God Is Not Great."

According to that quote above Hitler was excommunicated for participating in Goebbels wedding before he became Chancellor, so I would assume that Goebbels certainly would've been as well.

I suppose Goebbels was excommunicated for having a Protestant wedding, not just for marrying a Protestant. Otherwise, why else would St. Paul have discussed at some length the situation of a Christian married to a nonbeliever.

I couldn't help but notice that you guys didn't break this story UNTIL McCain had issued his statement Friday afternoon. If someone doesn't directly ask the Candidate on camera exactly which of Hagee's opinions he shares and which he repudiates, then the charge of press bias will not only continue but will basically be proven.

Like I say, I don't have a copy of the book "Why God Is Not Great" handy to quote but Hitchens did make a study of the topic and he was explicit. There is no evidence that Adolf Hitler nor any others of the Nazi Party high command, besides Goebbels, were ever excommunicated.

Why is Hagee better than Farrakhan?

Given that Hagee wants all Jews to go to Israel so they can be vaporized when Jesus comes back in a few weeks or months; and thinks that all Muslims are on a jihad to murder everyone (when in fact that fits only the Hagee-like Muslims), I just can't see why Hagee is more respectable than Farrakhan.

As far as I can see, it's 100% about double standards for blacks.
