Tacky

And you thought the Shuster-Chelsea business was sexist:

Apparently, there's also one of Hillary with a McCain button.

Lazy, not funny and AXE smells like whale puke, anyway.

vicious maniac:

I'll admit, the sheer audacity of the ad provided a few chuckles.

ghostlawns:

First of all, the Shuster comment was not sexist. It is a generational misunderstanding. He has a semi-valid point and it's nothing compared to a variety of things Chris Matthews has said over the years.

I think it's a clever ad. I wouldn't buy the stuff, but advertising is inherently lame and is mostly propaganda. There are millions of sexist ads out there, this is but one of them. Hey, if Axe didn't think it sold product, they wouldn't continue the same ad theme for years on end.

TeresaKopec:

If you want to promote something that is actually really funny Ana, check this parody of the Obama video using McCain's speeches:

Really well done!

Southern Bell:

Thanks, Ana, for briging up the "s" word.

The media is, rightly so, all over any perceived racist remark.

But they ignore the sexism rampant in Washington and the press.

I know that if Obama gets the nomination the Chris Rock schtick imploring people to "not vote for the white lady" will get sent from one rightwing blog to the next, focusing on the "white" adjetive.

And the press will fall all over themselves to once again debate race, all the while ignoring the "woman" part of Rock's equation.

To put in in terms that Axe buyers would understand, this ad is totally gay.

Disenfranchised_Libertarian:

Oh c'mon, it's funny and pretty tame.

Although I imagine you'd hear a lot more protest over it if it was Michelle Obama and a Bill Clinton button.

Of course, Bill never needed body spray to woo his women...

Paul Dirks Author Profile Page:

It would appear that the Axe campaign has been ongoing and no more or less offensive than the current offering. Is only suddenly notable when Hillary is the target?

Well yeah, I guess so.

The but the curtural backslide that they represent has been happening for years. I guess it's about time you noticed...

"...AXE smells like whale puke..."

Don't worry.

They eat mostly krill.

Egilsson:

Hey, I wear Axe. "Whale puke"....?

Jeez, I guess I need to change up my game or something. But I do view Ana Marie as a voice of authority, given her babe-factor.

Crusader AXE:

I do? Or the stuff? Probably the stuff. Which, when I taught stuff for the Navy, I heard most of the female sailors say it smells like stuff at least worse than whale puke? Of course, Ana, you recall that whale puke is ambergris, which was, prior to the chemical development of synthetic ambergris, a major component in perfume and cologne. So, I guess AXE body spray smells like synthetic whale puke.

I think being co-opted by a commercial is probably a sign that your cultural relevance is increasing while your electoral relevance has gone the way of the great speckled duck...you're pate.

Acid J:

Yes, sexist in the assumption that one can or should want to control female desire. I think it's calling up racist thinking as well, i.e. black men are sexually powerful & overwhelming.

Victims all around!

TipPDX:

Bill never needed body spray to woo his women...

Tell that to the infamous blue dress.

I'll be here all week. Be sure to tip your waiters and bartenders.

TomT:

What's wrong with being sexy?

why does hillary always frighten us with her teeth?

her button is a mere decoy.

Woah, are you making a reference to Ambergris, an extremely valuable substance used in many expensive perfumes as a preservative? That happens to be vomited up by whales?

"Ambergris (Ambra grisea, Ambre gris, ambergrease, or grey amber) is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull gray or blackish color produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Ambergris has a peculiar sweet, earthy odor (similar to isopropyl alcohol); though it has now been largely displaced by synthetics, the principal historical use of ambergris was as a fixative in perfumery.

...

Ambergris occurs as a biliary secretion of the intestines of the sperm whale, and can be found floating upon the sea, or in the sand near the coast. Because giant squids' beaks have been found embedded within lumps of ambergris, scientists have theorized that the whale's intestine produces the substance as a means of facilitating the passage of hard, sharp objects that the whale might have inadvertently eaten.

...

Historically, the primary commercial use of ambergris has been in fragrance chemistry, although it has also been used for medicinal and flavoring purposes. Ambergris has historically been an important perfume odorant and is highly sought. However, it is difficult to get a consistent and reliable supply of high quality ambergris. Due to demand for ambergris and its high price, replacement compounds have been sought out by the fragrance industry and chemically synthesized."

So I'm not sure 'whale vomit' is much of an insult when it comes to perfumes.
