McCain Moves On
With the world still sorting through the implications of the lady lobbyist sorta-scandal, John McCain got back on the trail today as if nothing had happened--a 30-minute town hall in Indianapolis, followed by about 30-minutes of questions from the audience, and nary a mention of the New York Times story. (Before he was introduced, someone on the stage did make a joke about canceling his Times subscription.)
After no one in the audience brought up the issue, the national press tried to keep it alive, by asking him about his campaign's assaults on the Times. McCain did not bite. "I do not have any more comment about this issue," McCain said, noting that he had answered questions about the Times story Thursday morning. "I do not intend to address the issue further."
And it seemed to work. As is his traditional style, he stood for quite a while answering questions from the press on other issues, from the economy, his outreach to the black and youth vote, the recent FEC opinion on his ability to decline public financing, and the number of lobbyists working on his campaign. "These people have honorable records," he said of his staff.
It was, all in all, a good morning, following a difficult day. The campaign is moving on, beyond the tension and relative silence that typified yesterday afternoon, when his most interesting public utterance was "Play Abba." My story on the campaign's tense Thursday afternoon is here.

I thought it was a big mistake for the Times to lead with the very weak allegation of a sexual affair. There was a lot of detail in that story about the relationship with lobbyists and doing favors -- similar to the way he did it with Keating. But that was buried in the story.
Now McCain will just rise above, refuse to comment, and be allowed to slide.
The McCain Rules may be even more powerful than the Clinton Rules.

Well, I'm sure that McCain's relief is complete now that both Time and ABC are willing to declare that the story has officially blown over.
After all, to pile on and actually investigate the allegations would be horribly uncollegial and unsporting. Certainly not the sort of activity that would sully the pristine nature of the Flagships of our National Media.

No one cares about the sex angle here. The Times was stupid for running it that way-- they should have buried the "staffers raised questions" aspect, rather than highlighting it.
Now, writing the inappropriate letter to the FCC, and lobbying for Iseman's client to be able to engage in the media consolidation when he had criticized it... and running the most lobbyist-ridden campaign of all time... that's something.

Elvis if a lobbyist that you are doing favours for is also someone that you are romantically involved with then I think the sex angle is more than significant.
Making it the central premise of the article, which I don't necessarily think they did - they were very careful not to commit to any specific angle really - would not have been ridiculous. The issues surrounding the letter to the FCC are most significant, especially given his public positions on campaign reforms.

Attack the messenger, without addressing the message. Throw yourself into self pity. Appeal to emotion. Blame the Media.
I think we've seen that tune before and it remains categorized among the never ending list of logical fallacies.

That reminds me of how my children would act when they were upset.
We need to find out what the facts are. McCain has already denied all of them and the NYT is standing behind the research. Someone isn't telling the truth, unless the truth can be two different and opposite things at the same time.

What a sad state of affairs that a presidential candidate can be have allegations of influence peddling by the one of the largest newspapers in the country and reporters will allow it to blow over after a single day of the candidate not commenting on it.
Michael, rather than reporting on the media's apparent giving up on the topic, why aren't you pressing forward with it? Just because the NYT's article wasn't focused on the more important parts of the story doesn't mean that you shouldn't be focusing the spotlight on them.

No question the NYT did McCain a huge favor with the sex angle. Like the TANG memos, the larger truth gets lost in sensation. Unless they find photos of McCain leaving a motel with this woman, anytime the lobbyist story gets mentioned now, McCain surrogates (including a good chunk of the pundit class) will very primly turn up their blue noses and say "Oh, not that bogus sex story!"

The big lie about John McCain is that he is a deeply honest and courageous person. No facts to the contrary will be allowed to challenge that lie. He has become his own myth, and the mainstream press is deeply complicit in the mythology.
Notice that this is a complete replay of the GWB campaign. Bush was proclaimed, over and over, to be a good, decent, regular guy. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, this lie was sold through the press. We now see the consequences.
Will Time Magazine help put an irresponsible, war-crazy nut in the White House? We shall soon see.

Personally, I think this is unique to McCain. They swallowed the Rove spin on Bush for a few years (stubborn and stupid=admirably 'resolut'), but there's nothing like the fawning over McCain. Just to take his 'maverick' reputation as one example, they spew this when they, and we, all now that he spent 2001-04 flirting with Democrats before he decided he couldn't get what he wanted and then declared his love and loyalty to a man he despised because he thought it could get him to the White House.
To take a more revolting example: He is praised for his "courageous and principled" stand against torture, virtually on the same day he votes for torture and calls on Bush to veto the ban on torture. It's nothing short of repulsive.

Just reading that his flipping the bird to you all and "it seemed to work", it is just really amazing.

A sworn deposition that Sen. John McCain gave in a lawsuit more than five years ago appears to contradict one part of a sweeping denial that his campaign issued this week to rebut a New York Times story about his ties to a Washington lobbyist.
On Wednesday night the Times published a story suggesting that McCain might have done legislative favors for the clients of the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, who worked for the firm of Alcalde & Fay. One example it cited were two letters McCain wrote in late 1999 demanding that the Federal Communications Commission act on a long-stalled bid by one of Iseman's clients, Florida-based Paxson Communications, to purchase a Pittsburgh television station.
Just hours after the Times's story was posted, the McCain campaign issued a point-by-point response that depicted the letters as routine correspondence handled by his staff—and insisted that McCain had never even spoken with anybody from Paxson or Alcalde & Fay about the matter. "No representative of Paxson or Alcalde & Fay personally asked Senator McCain to send a letter to the FCC," the campaign said in a statement e-mailed to reporters.
But that flat claim seems to be contradicted by an impeccable source: McCain himself. "I was contacted by Mr. Paxson on this issue," McCain said in the Sept. 25, 2002, deposition obtained by NEWSWEEK. "He wanted their approval very bad for purposes of his business. I believe that Mr. Paxson had a legitimate complaint."

Wasn't it Jay Carney who poo-poo'd Josh Marshall for harping on the US Attorney firings as a tired non-story? Yeah, it was. No we have Michael Scherer moving on from the McCain story a few hours before Isikoff throws down hard evidence that McCain is lying through his teeth.
Why exactly are Scherer and Carney working for Time?

There definitely appears to be more than meets the eye to the whole story. Even the Wall Street Journal has an editorial in today's paper about McCain's potenial hypocrisy re campaign financing.
I don't care about the sex stuff. Most Americans won't, including the rightwingers and David Broder, people who expressed horror at Clinton's affair.

The McCain apologists are like Ptolemaic astronomers, constantly resorting to inserted epicycles and irregular arguments to explain a theory that is just plain wrong. John McCain is not an exceptionally fine and capable leader.
The McCainiac press is so heavily invested in the inabilty of the American public to get the Vietnam Torture Saint story out of their heads that they will never back off supporting this strange man, who, at the least, is seriously confused, and, at worst, is a dangerous war monger.

Ordinary politicians hang out with sexy lobbyists and do them favors. This is considered sleazy and frowned upon.
St. John McCain hangs out with a sexy lobbyist and does her favors. This is noble because she is an honorable person. Anyone who enters the aura of St. John becomes an honorable person.

During the primary, when it was in full swing, I kept asking when and if the media might take a look at the hypocrisy of John McCain. Of course, the timing and poor writing of the Times article make it look like a hit job. That's unfortunate. If they had left the sexual innuendo out, the whole thing about McCain being a hypocrite in matters of personal integrity is a real story that should be further analyzed.

And the real problems is that Isikoff didn't even need to work very hard to catch the McCain absolute lie.
The carpetbaggerreport captures it very well,

In the final analysis, it matters not what McCain may or may not have done with the woman in question. First of all, we have already demonstrated that personal integrity really does not matter in terms of state, after all, was not Bill Clinton one of the greatest Presidents this nation has ever had? Besides, Obama will defeat McCain because not even republicans will vote for McCain. This is 1984 all over again, but now we have the gun...and the landslide is ours!

I have to laugh at the sheer outrageousness of the whole little NY Times/McCain dustup....
While most of the actual facts in the story have not been proven false, all of the cable news "reporters" are falling all over themselves to support McCain and condemn the NY Times...
Very little mention of the fact that the "last honest politician" who has been very vocal about campaign finance reform rides in Corporate jets, gives favors to a company represented by his girlfriend, and employs 59 (count em folks!) lobbyists on his staff...
If McCain were the Dem candidate, every paper and newscast in the country would be falling all over themselves to cover this story and condemn him...the usual maddening double standard in this country!

Did the media, as in their traditional style, mindlessly accept these comments at face value? Did anyone bother to check if any of the policy statements are out and out lies as per his traditional style?
