SwampCast: Mittron Is a Real Boy!

Don't know if Jiminy Cricket visited last night or what but there was a different Mitt on display this morning in Grand Rapids (also last night on the plane). He was completely energized, loose, and funny -- not that funny, but also not pre-programmed funny. He joked with/about his toddler grandson about things happening on the stage at that very moment! He's telling stories he hasn't told before, etc.

I've ever seen him like this before, but my first reaction was that *this* is a Mitt that could win a general.

That said, my fellow Romulan, Mike Madden (of Salon), talked to someone who came to the rally with twelve others from Missouri, and someone else who came here with 4 others from Iowa.

That's about a 1/4th of the crowd. So, well, maybe nevermind.

Then again, the Mitchell Interactive tracking poll has Mitt up 35-29. So who knows.

Here, some video proof of a different Mitt:

Acid J:

I heard The Dresden Dolls' "Coin Operated Boy" is about Mitt Romney.

...but my first reaction was that *this* is a Mitt that could win a general.

But Mitt would never win this general. The Democrats would have to nominate Carter, Mondale or Dukakis to lose this one.

BrooklynGurl:

or Clinton.....

Dave, don't forget Clinton. If she's nominated, the election is the Republican's to lose. Her negative numbers swing around the 50% mark. Not good to cede half the country before the election even starts. Then again, Bill won with 43% of the vote. She just has to hope that Bloomberg or some other third party gets in and sucks votes down to only her core of supporters giving her a plurality.

Get ready for President Romney... or McCain.

Dave:

I agree that Clinton is a polarizing figure for sure, but it may come down to the Iraq war. The majority of the country wants us out which Clinton claims to want to do. I can't see any circumstances where Romney is elected president. McCain is a different story.

Todd and in Charge:

If that's the best McRomney can do, and the press on the bus are impressed by this, I want what they are drinking!

Gold Bat:

I would imagine Mitt is on some meds....lol

BrooklynGurl:

Dave, you may think the Iraq war is the issue but most of America does not list it as #1.

Even if Iraq is the top issue, I don't see either side's candidates reducing force strength any time soon. Both Clinton and Obama have backed away from any definitive drawdown schedule. In fact, they sound a lot like Nixon in 1968, when he said he'd get America out of Vietnam and he took four years to draw down troops after that.

It only took Nixon 4 years to get out of Johnson's war and Vietnam didn't have any oil or possibility of a war following us home, like in Iraq. Clinton speaks out of both sides of her mouth on Iraq (as you allude to with your "claims" phraseology), because she knows that, just like her husband, she has to speak against neocon foreign policy while a candidate in order to win the base of her party and leave herself enough room to adopt the Bush policies, the very ones she spoke against, if she becomes president. Clinton is enough of a realist to know that she can't get troops out any time soon.

I like how you say she "claims" to want to get troops out of Iraq. Yup, that pretty much points out that she has about as much of an intention to get out of Iraq as does John McCain.

I opposed the invasion of Iraq at the time. However, as Colin Powell pointed out, we broke it, we own it and we have to fix it. If we don't take care of Iraq, unlike Vietnam, some aspects and major fallout from the war will follow us home, back to New York City and the rest of America. I hope that whoever is our president will be smart enough to take America's longterm national interest into account when crafting American foreign policy and make sure the fallout from Iraq is, at a minimum, contained. I am confident that each of the major candidates, except maybe Obama, is ready for such a challenge.

Dave:

BrooklynGurl -

i pretty much agree with everything you said except for the bit at the end about Obama not being ready. I do remember Clinton and Obama saying that they want all troops out by the end of 2009, whether that will happen depends on the situation once they take office is another thing. I think that many candidates campaign in ways that may not stand up to the situations at large once they take office. however, all of the Democrats will face enormous odds to repair all of Bush's mistakes but will definitely do a great job of getting the country back on the right foot while the republicans will just make things worse.

Ana, you should ask Romney about this. He would never get away with this in Massachusetts.

Ask Mitt, does he believe in man-made climate change? If so, what solutions would he have to deal with the problem?

This is a problem that the press still refuses to pin the candidates down on:

Titus Pullo:

JJ, when has the press pinned down any candidate down on anything unless its a sound bitey, gotcha thingy like driver's licences for illegals? Has anyone asked the Reps how maintaining a presence in Iraq at 300 million a day AND having tax cuts works? McCain is in Michigan touting job training for displaced workers...training for WHAT jobs exactly? Busboy? Cashier? Has anyone asked? Answer: no.

Every question should be about the national debt, the loss of the manufacturing base, the exorbitant cost of the Iraq adventure to the US taxpayer, the mortgage meltdown, the end of privacy in this country. But hey AMC has a video blog...it's all good! Would it be impossible for AMC to wear something low cut and a push up bra? If this thing is going down I at least want to be entertained.

henrikakselsen:

Amen Titus! It's an outrage that the press is concerned with nitpick while the big stuff is not discussed.

1. Global warming - may be the the end of the world as we know it

2. The enormous budget deficit, the cost of the war and the fact that China could almost bring down the US economy if it feels like it.

I'm not a Paul-voter but at least he TRIES to bring up the second issue, but NONE of the other candidates on either party seems to catch on to it, and as the press seems unable to hold their feet to the fire, why should they?

It's time for the press to start earning their salary.
