Focus on the Family Voter Guide Wrong About Romney

More good work, Michael! Keep it up and...well you'll probably find yourself out a job at Time and working at McClatchy or TPM.

It's a bit of a strain to imply that Focus on the Family was attempting to deliberately slander Romney, especially when they say "I appreciate his acknowledging that." If Romney were to acknowledge that Mormonism is a different faith, that would be a plus in the eyes of evangelicals. It would allow the discussion to move past accusations of heresy and into a comparison of shared values. If you're trying to perform a take down on Focus on the Family and be honest, you're going to have to use the angle "Focus on the Family slanders Romney to increase his viability with evangelicals," and that's not going to get you very far.

It's much the same way evangelicals and orthadox Jews get along so well. Jews don't believe Jesus Christ is the son of God, but they're not claiming to be Christian so that's not a problem and the shared social values become a source of bonding.

I'm SHOCKED...SHOCKED I tell you that such a thing is possible. Next you'll tell me that Focus on The Family routinely misrepresents Scripture in order to fuel hatred and prejudice using people's discomfort over sex as the fuel to drive their Muslim-hating Gay-bashing notably unChristian agenda!

The true colors of the Dobsons and the Perkinses are coming out. it's always an interesting question whether these people are sincere in their beliefs and back polticians who share their beliefs, or are complicit with them in selling their supporters a bill of goods.

Huckabee is clearly the evangelical in this race, the one who mostly shares the values of the theocons in the party. That Dobson and Perkins endorse the corpocon, and do so by lying about Romney's adherence to the evangelical sect is indicative of who they really serve.

Good post. I think the MSM needs to dig deeper into Christianity as it relates to the GOP. Religion is a defining issue for Republicans and it's about time the MSM started hashing out the differences not only between Mormons and Protestants, but also differences between Baptists and Presbyterians. If the GOP wants to be the party of Christianists, then by all means we need to know where the candidates stand on issues like whether it's acceptable to baptist an infant, whether Christ was a man or devine, does God have physical body, predestination and the ordination of women.

Leave Romney alone about Mormonism. I don't personally know any Mormons (our neighbors are Mormons, but we don't know them) but they seem like decent people.

this is an excellent question -- especially given that exit polls show that GOP voters do say that "Religious beliefs of candidates" are important. In South Carolina, 38% said those beliefs mattered "a great deal", and another 23% said "somewhat." Only 30% said "not much" (16%) or "not at all"(14%). The numbers were similar in Iowa (36% "a great deal", 31% "somewhat", 18% "not much", 15% "not at all"). In Michigan, 54% replied "a great deal" or "somewhat". Only in New Hampshire did a majority (57%) say "not much" or "not at all."

In other words, GOP voters care about the religious beliefs of their candidates -- but the media pretty much ignores the issue (and the potential 'polarization' of the GOP electorate on the basis of religion.

In fact, little is said about how the GOP acquiesces to religious bigotry, and "religion-based voting." There's a reason why GOP candidates didn't bother to compete in Nevada -- they knew that about a quarter of GOP voters in that state were mormons, and that they would vote overwhelmingly for Romney (95% did so). Everyone else realized that they would be competing only for the remaining 75% of the electorate, and decided to pretty much skip the state.

Mitt's church is not a Creedal Christian church. The New Testament Jesus Christ is the center of the church:

Focus On The View

Mormonism is not Christian because it
"denies one or more of the essential doctrines of Christianity. Of the essential doctrines (that there is only one God, Jesus is God in flesh, forgiveness of sins is by grace alone, and Jesus rose from the dead physically, the gospel being the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus), Mormonism denies three of them: how many gods there are, the person of Jesus, and His work of salvation.

"Mormonism teaches that God the Father has a body of flesh and bones (D. & C. 130:22) and that Jesus is a creation. It teaches that he was begotten in heaven as one of God’s spirit children (See the Book, Jesus the Christ, by James Talmage, p. 8). This is in strict contrast to the biblical teaching that he is God in flesh (John 1:1, 14), eternal (John 1:1, 2, 15), uncreated, yet born on earth (Col. 1:15), and the creator all (John 1:3; Col. 1;16-17). Jesus cannot be both created and not created at the same time. Though Mormonism teaches that Jesus is God in flesh, it teaches that he is "a" god in flesh, one of three gods that comprise the office of the Trinity (Articles of Faith, by Talmage, pp. 35-40). These three gods are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. This is in direct contradiction of the biblical doctrine that there is only one God (Isaiah 44:6,8; 45:5).
