Are You Kidding Me?
Let me get this straight: Obama wins Iowa. In a desperate move--unprecedented for an ex-President in American politics--Bill Clinton decides to impede Obama's momentum by inserting himself into the campaign. He attacks Obama on an almost daily basis, sometimes falsely. He makes a spectacle of himself. And then he blames the press for not covering the substance of the campaign?
"This is what you live for," he told CNN reporter Jessica Yellin.. "They just spin you up on this and you happily go along," Clinton said. As aides steered him away, he scolded: "Shame on you."
I can't believe that Hillary Clinton wants the world to think that whenever she gets into political trouble, she's going to have her husband come roaring about, breaking furniture, sucking up oxygen, spewing carbon dioxide. My impression is that she's strong enough to defend herself--she certainly showed that in the recent Democratic debate. But apparently she's not strong enough to control Mr. Bill...and if that's the case, any sane voter would have to think twice before enabling this sort of circus act in the White House.

Nah. Bill Clinton is probably smart enough to make the following calculation:
People all across the political spectrum in America today probably hate journalists even more than they hate politicians.

However one feels about Bill Clinton in this case it is pretty hard to disagree with what he said.
As a whole the media is easily spun and really doesn't care that much.
I think the author of this post has ample recent history on that point.
FISA anyone?

The "substance" of the campaign, of course, includes the attempt by the lying Bushies to completely immunize the telecom companies for (allegedly) blatantly violating the privacy rights of U.S. citizens. In fact, that very subject is being debated on the Senate Floor today. And yet, the press, as exemplified by Mr. Klein-Hoekstra, apparently doesn't have either the time nor legal expertise to cover this issue in any way that could be described as "sagacious." Instead, it's just another round of Bill Clinton said this blah blah blah...
If Mr. Klein-Hoekstra is only going to cover Bill Clinton's distortions, then it might be helpful to actually detail all the bile he has been spewing lately. And not necessarily his quite legitimate complaints about the vacuous press; rather, it would seem more interesting to lay out (and refute) exactly what he has been saying.
Apparently, however, the only distortions that get Mr. Klein-Hoekstra's goat concern his livelihood - the media. So, the end result is that the FISA issue goes completely uncovered, the Bill Clinton comments go almost completely uncovered and the only Bill Clinton column that gets any mention is the one dealing with Mr. Klein-Hoekstra's profession, as though that matters to anyone.
It sure would be interesting if Time Magazine had someone on staff that has the time and legal expertise to cover a vital issue concerning Constitutional rights that is being debated TODAY in the halls of government.

Why does Joe Klein's opinion about how a former president "should act" matter at all? Where is it written that a former president can't, or shouldn't remain politically involved? This whole notion of propriety is screwy and meaningless.

Obama and his surrogates need to stop going on TV and whining about how the Clinton's are a bunch of meanies! It makes Obama look weak and unprepared for the office he seeks.
What does he think he was getting into, a quilting bee?
No doubt, the Clinton's have the best punch and counter-punch in contemporary politics. And while there may be some "Democratic Party Leaders" who are reaching for the smelling salts, it's only because they haven't seen a successful Democratic Presidential campaign since 1996, and forgot what one looks like.
Democrats take note: this is how Presidential campaigns are won!
As a Democrat who desperately wants a Democrat back in the White House, the Clinton's muscle-flexing gives me every confidence that they actually know what it takes to win one of these things. After all, there is a reason why the Clintons are the only Democrats to win the White House twice since FDR.
Finally, that Obama finds himself so easily thrown off his game by a little bit of friendly fire from the Clintons tells me that he will be eviscerated by the balls out business end of the GOP attack machine.

And, I suggest to my fellow Swamplanders that, as usual, since the kids they put in charge are going to ignore FISA that we turn their comments section into all FISA all the time.

"Shame on you"
Is there anyone better qualified to give the funeral oration at the death of shame than Chutzpah Joe Klein?
Does anyone else find it odd that the shameless liar, Chutzpah Joe, earns a living by pointing out hypocrisy and dishonesty in others?
If shame had any meaning whatsoever in our society, Chutzpah Joe would have taken a vow of silence decades ago.
Posted by HH | January 24, 2008 10:42 AM
They don't just ignore FISA. They ignore the continuing atrocity of Iraq, the decay of our economy, and the very strange disappearance of a million emails from the White House.
These things are not "news" according to Time-Warner-Moloch corportation. So this "blog" is a journalistic whore's race about a campaign horse race.
When the US President is a ghoul who watches torture tapes, what can you expect from corporation journalists other than cheery reports on our bright future under "new" leadership?

Hillary and Bill have willfully distorted Obama's record, twisted his statements and misrepresented his positions. This is exactly the same kind of arrogance and truthiness that Democrats have complained about for the last eight years. If the party is willing to nominate a candidate whose grasp of the truth is little better than Bush's, the party deserves to lose its Obama voters. And it will.

Joe continues to embarrass himself. There's a debate going on in the Senate right now he might be interested in, had he the time or inclination to do so.

Indeed, Mike, I wonder if John Quincy Adams removed himself from politics after his Presidency - I seem to remember that he was a House member, going off about the Bank, the gag rule and Texas ad nauseum. (There are many such other examples - like TR). If Mr. Klein-Hoekstra knew anything about American history, or bothered to look it up, one of his columns might actually be worth reading.
But his refusal to cover a vital issue such as FISA is very telling. As usual, if anyone actually wants to follow a divisive current issue that is relevant today, go to Glenn Greenwald.
Why is Senator Rockefeller screwing Americans today??!! Why is he in league with the lying Bushies and their smarmy sycophants??!! What is the projected vote count??!! What is Senator Dodd going to say and do??!! What are the Senatorial candidates - Obama and Clinton - going to do??!! Where is our media??!! Why doesn't it represent us??!!

It's a crying shame that Bill has been doing so much damage to himself over the last couple of weeks. For a guy who's so concerned about his legacy and is supposed to be such a political wizard he's been remarkably tone deaf recently. The Clintons already have a reputation (even among Democrats) for being Clinton first before all others and he's not doing anything to help that. It just makes them both look ruthless power seekers.

"People all across the political spectrum in America today probably hate journalists even more than they hate politicians."
I would agree but the video clips speak for themselves. The calculation is becoming less "hating the press more than the pols" and more "there he goes again."
When he was in office, I could see his side of things when he said that the press wasn't treating him fairly. Sometimes. That certainly hasn't been the case with him since he's left office and I don't believe that's been the case with Hillary during the campaign. There have been moments where I thought "man, they're being rough on her." I've also had the same thought from time to time about most of the other candidates. There have also been plenty of times where any given candidate has been let slide on some pretty questionable statements.
At any rate, Bill is pushing his luck. When people in his own party start saying "Ok, enough already" he had better start listening.
Posted by Chris | January 24, 2008 11:06 AM
I'd love to know Bill's opinion on FISA, Patroclus but the one time he was available to a Time reporter (Jay Newton Small) she wasted his time on campaign process questions.
Too bad... she really could have asked Bill a tough question like: Should Senators Clinton & Obama leave the campaign trail, if necessary, to support Dodd?
That would be a tough, but fair question for the former president and I'd have been entertained by the answer even if it didn't please me.
Posted by Mike M. | January 24, 2008 11:10 AM
It's laughable and pathetic and as a voter frustrating. But if they have a debate on the issues, Obama wins. If they talk about where they stand on issues. Obama wins. This way they don't debate: Hillary makes some speeches, Obama has to defend himself, set the record straight, AND lay out his vision, and Bill Clinton lies about it all and the press covers him instead of Obama.
It's a great plan.
It's why the democratic party will lose come November if she is the nominee. I beleive this truly to the depth of my bones.
The mendacity engulfing the Clinton campaign bogs the mind and begs the question what is wrong with the democratic party if this is what we have become.

"But apparently she's not strong enough to control Mr. Bill...and if that's the case, any sane voter would have to think twice before enabling this sort of circus act in the White House."
How much do you want to bet that two years from now, Joe Klein will be claiming that he was the lone journalist telling everyone who would listen that Bill Clinton's involvement in the campaign was a non-issue and that he was strongly opposed to the media's inappropriate focus on Bill Clinton?
This is the classic Joe Klein weather-wane stuff -- straight regurgitation of Beltway conventional wisdom, which he will simply deny or declare inoperative when the winds blow a different way.
This is the Joe Klein circus act: anyone looking back at Joe Klein's 2008 campaign coverage two years from now will find Joe Klein statements praising Bill Clinton's involvement in Hillary's campaign, statements objecting to it, statements calling it a non-issue, statements attacking the media's focus on it, statements defending the media's focus on it... and Joe will feel free to stitch these statements together in any manner he pleases (or to invent statements outright) to portray his position-du-jour as long-standing and consistent over time.

I'm furious about Obama's comments.
The party of ideas? Yeah, bad, divisive ideas that took the country backward.
Reagan as man who put aside party politics and worked with Congress? How about mentioning Tip O'Neil.
I know several Democrats in my office who were not planning on going to the caucus but have changed their minds solely due to Obama's glib remarks.
As I said, I'm angry at him and I'm not alone.

As a sober, responsible centrist, let me just say that both Bill Clinton and Joe Klein are "well beyond stupid."

Many of the comments above make me a bit hot under the collar.
What seems to be a favorite pastime for posters here, bashing Joe Klein instead of talking about the substance of his report, is exactly the kind of petty ugliness that we've all been inundated with.
Swiftboating even a swiftboater doesn't make you any better.
"Chutzpah Joe" and "Klein-Hoekstra", whatever that means, may be cool but it's still derogatory and abusive. Certainly not civil.
Grow up people. Stay on topic.
joechi above talks about how "Clinton's muscle-flexing gives me every confidence" only means we've all lowered our expectations so much that Machiavellian venality (ends justify means) is somehow politically heroic.
Obama, on the contrary to joechi's opinion, is not "easily thrown off" by the Clinton's nasty game. He's just not going to take it in the shorts the way Kerry did. And we all remember how that turned out.
Fight back, I say, GObama!
Personally, I used to respect Bill Clinton and I had good memories of the Clinton years. Bill and Hillary's crap has changed that for me for all time.
Is that a price the electorate should have to pay? Accept that civility and best-man-wins values have become permanent victims of "whatever it takes, because winning is everything?"
This is a sickness in our society that Obama is wanting to change. With all those voices who continue to say, "Oh, let the boys and girls fight, it'll make men out of them!" I say, we've had 5000 years of such stupidity. And the longer we argue for our limitations, the longer we will have them.

Gee, why do we know so much about what Bill Clinton says? Might it be because sound bites of what he says are the only thing the media covers over and over again? Might it be because The Situation Room (Best Political Team in the Business) and Tweety and the Gang play only those sound bites over and over and comment about how terrible it is? I suspect we wouldn't be having this discussion if the media were not obsessed with recording his every word. Remember the major coverage of the Edwards campaign came early on when Elizabeth complained about the lack of fair stories? And, not even that could draw coverage later.
Now, of course, we have fully established the basis for the next novel (as Somerby says) The Clintons are not only liars (without citations), but he is interfering and just wants to be President behind the scenes.
There are a lot of things I like about Obama, although I am concerned about his "centrism" (for example, dragging the Repub view of Social Security being a problem in the discussion), however I am most concerned with his reaction to this. Believe me, the Republican attacks will be truly vicious and make this look like nursery school
Posted by ivb | January 24, 2008 12:06 PM
Southern Bell - Did you read the context of Obama's quote? He specifically said that "the Republican approach has played itself out." He also said that Reagan's tax-cutting mantra didn't work either. If you actually read all of his comments without the Clinton campaign spin, I don't see how you can come to the same conclusion.

"bashing Joe Klein instead of talking about the substance of his report"
JimNY: Of course, what Joe Klein did here was to bash Clinton instead of talking about the substance of his remarks.
Clinton, of course, is right, but it's the context that matters (in context he's being petty). And the context of Joe Klein's post is that he's a whining petty wanker.
So, in conclusion, everyone here is "right" but everyone is also kind of a dick.

Nobody cares about what you think about the Clintons, Joe. No-bo-dee. This is the most trivial crap ever. Only you and your colleagues want to debate the rules of "Rock-'em-Sock-'em Robot". Nobody else gives a rat's ass at all.
Shut up about Bill Clinton, and--voila--there won't be any coverage for the Clintons to exploit in getting out their message.
So if you care that much about this "terrible problem", then just stop talking about it, because no-one else wants to hear any more about it.
There's a real live filibuster going on about how the government can be held accountable (if at all) to the electorate and the constitution.
What does Hillary Clinton have to say about that subject--what will she do to support Dodd?
What does Barack Obama have to say about that subject--what will he do to support Dodd?
We know what John Edwards has to say...but he's not in the Senate now, and can't literally cast the right vote...
Joe: Contribute something of value to the discussion, or just be quiet. Stop trying to get the partisan supporters to jump up and down about a non-issue. Stop trying to take the conversation away from what matters, and into Ignatius' and Brooks' cocktail party chatter, by waving a huge flag with a skull and crossbones under the picture of Bill Clinton.
Do the right thing for a few seconds of your life, will ya?

MSM has to take blame for sensationalizing episodes that are commonplace in political campaigns.
The Romney footage in the office supply store showed a normal reaction of a person who had responded repeatedly to the same question. Romney admitted that lobbyists were advisers to his campaign, but were not running his campaign. Romney did not seem out of control. The reporter had his story, but didn't have the perfect script dialogue that he had in mind to use.
The clip of Clinton stating his position on the voting setup in Las Vegas did not show an irate person, but one who was stating his case.
The footage of Obama having an exchange with a reoprter did not show an upset and irate candidate as ABC News had reported, but a rather civil discourse.
These episodes make very clear that unless you have videotape, you cannot rely on MSM to accurately depict what took place. MSM feels the need to fill in for the striking Hollywood screenwriters. MSM has a scene in mind thay just bend things to fit their screenplay.
Clinton, Hoekstra, and a multitude of others know that they can get the screenwriter stenography pool to write the things the politician desires if they give the MSM the proper framework for the desired script. Clinton is laughing all the way to his next televised episode. MSM is looking for imagery over facts.

I think Clinton is at her best when the Right is attacking her and she is sticking to policy discussions. My sense is Democrats like both Clinton and Obama but particularly among older voters they think Clinton should go first, to be followed by Obama. If so that gives her a natural advantage that is almost impossible to overcome. However, doing nothing but personally attacking Obama is one way they might screw it up.

Just to educate JimNY:
"Klein-Hoekstra" is a reference to Republican Congressman Pete Hoekstra who, when Klein was being pummeled for his mendacity on the FISA issue, admitted that he was Klein's source for the misinformation that Klein wrote in a column titled "Democrats: Still tone-deaf on National Security."

Howard, I did read Obama's complete text. And his saying the Republicans ideas were played is tantamount to saying the Republicans in the 80s and 90s had good ideas, which is something I disagree with.
In a very slick way, he's trying to avert attention away from the great economy under Clinton and stick Clinton with the blame for the awful partisan bickering of the 90s. And most Democrats who remember the 90s would put the blame for that wrangling on Gingrich and his buddies.
I wonder how Obama handle another Tom Delay. Frankly, I don't think he has the political smarts or stomach for the bare-knuckling fighting that is sometimes necessary in Washington.
I want a fighter on my side and I don't think Obama has the right stuff at this point in time.
And the media, by fawning on him almost as much as they do on McCain, isn't helping Obama any in terms of Obama developing a thick hide.

"Karen makes comments in the comments part very regularly"
The "comments" referenced are typically non-sequitur evasions that do not engage the issues raised by readers of this blog. Clearly one does not become a featured Time Magazine reporter by delivering straight answers to questions. There is a persistent myth that the people who turn the crank for Time-Warner-Moloch are "nice" individuals who are subjected to unfair abuse by posters on this blog. This myth is exploded by the refusal of these "journalists" to engage the issues raised here.
This is a phony blog that has all the trappings of the blog medium except for the crucial feature of interaction between the lead bloggers and the visiting posters. Thus, it is a sham that reflects the fundamental dishonesty of CorpoAmerican mass media.
Time-Warner-Moloch has decided to turn public attention to the presidential race, in the hope that this jamming campaign will drown out any inconvenient truths that don't fit TWM's agenda. These truths include TWM's steady support of the squalid mess of lies, theft, torture, and war crimes called the "War on Terror."
Thus, every single paid blogger here is doing the whore's race on the horse race - Every single one. FISA? What's that? Torture tapes? Old news! Missing White House emails? Boring! Sibel Edmonds? Who is she?
What very nice people they are.

But, I think they will get better. Karen has been good at responding. The obvious exception is Klein. His arrogance will not allow him to read, much less, care about what we write.

ivb - point taken. What I should have said was all Swamplanders save Klein-Hoekstra communicates with his commenters.
But now that I'm commenting (yet again), let me say that I agree with HH that the dearth of a meaningful back-and-forth on this blog is a tremendous hindrance. Back when Whitaker Chambers was writing for Time, it actually strived to be a literate and hyper-intelligent brand of commentary (even with Luce as publisher). Time, then, didn't shy from issues. Time, then, would have covered FISA, climate change, health coverage, poverty and all of the other burning issues. It used to be expected of the media. Now, all we get (here) is horserace and moneyraising.

Let us stop deceiving ourselves. Both candidates have made false and unconfirmed accusations. Did Obama not claim that the Clintons have a 20 year plan to be in office? Did the press attack him or verify his story? No.
It is true that the Clintons have made false accusations about Obama. But so has Obama. So the accusations cancel out.
Everyone criticizes Hillary for going negative but no one talks about Obama being negative.
I believe that Obama is just riding the coattails of hope. He has to show substance and I think that has been his greatest problem. You cant keep shouting hope, hope, hope without providing a plan for making hope a reality.
Posted by Leye | January 24, 2008 2:56 PM
Southern Belle... it is clear that you did not READ what Obama said. Nor are you as politically astute as you would like the rest of us to believe. If you were, you would be able to point to REPUBLICAN ideas like Newt Gingrich's Contract with America (1994), the Defense of Marriage ACT (Bill Clinton happily signed that to counteract the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" issue. You'd know that Reagan's economic guru David Stockman touted "supply-side" economics (along with Jack Kemp) and the "trickle down" theory which backs the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy to this day.
No where in his remarks did he EVER say that the "change in trajectory" was positive or negative. He simply said it changed. On one hand you could argue that post the Iranian hostage crisis, America felt a little better about itself (similar to the "happy-talk" post 9/11). But you can also argue that Reagan's governance was bad news for a lot of people who weren't part of his core constituency -- which IF YOU READ Obama's statement, is exactly what he was talking about about. You wrongly assume a change in trajectory means up, when it can just as easily mean down.
The Republicans -- even during the vaunted Clinton years had control of the House and Senate, starting in 1994. They controlled the purse-strings, they wrote the legislation, they were the party in power.
Political education is important. And in your case very little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Be mad, go caucus or don't. But you owe it to yourself, to at least know what they heck you're talking about before you think you can lobby anyone to your way of thinking.
Toodle-loo!

Jade, I do know those facts. What's your point. Obama was trying to pander to conservative independents and Democrats with his comments.
He said what he said in language that gave too much credit to Reagan and the Republicans of the last twenty-seven years.
I know many core Democrats who will not vote for him because of his remarks. And yes, they all know the complete wordage he used.
Frankly, I'd rather believe Obama was cravenly appealing to a certain voter catergory than to think he actually believes the caca he spouted.
Of course, the media, as usual, gives him a free pass.
And I agree with the poster who said he's yet to show substance. And there's no way I can see this guy standing up to a Newt Gingrich or Tom Delay. If confronted with some real political hardball Obama would complment them no having "fresh ideas".

Joe's point is valid. It's exactly this sort of dysfunction and lack of personal discipline (in Bill's case) that is the Clinton's archilles heel. Bill's adventures this past week have probably done Hillary some harm. More importantly the Repblicans will have edited up some very hand ad material from all this that they can use (sliced different ways) against either Hillary or Obama in the general election.

As one of your regular hecklers, I completely agree with you on this.
The thing that bothers me the most about Bill's antics is the comparison to the elder statesman reserve he kept during the first 7 years of the Bush administration. Never disliked the guy before. Now I do.

The attempt by the Obama campaign and the media to completely distort the meaning of Bill Clinton's "fairy tale" comments have drawn him into the campaign. Klein is incorrect in suggesting that his role in the campaign shifted after Iowa; He played the same role in NH as he did in the Iowa caucuses. My guess is that he was so personally offended by the Obama campaign (And the media, which may be why they are so upset with him now. Nothing moves people to anger as quick as guilt.) that nothing could stop him from fighting back. I'm sure that Elizabeth Edwards and Michelle Obama - and I have great respect for both of them - would respond in the same way if they were in a similar situation.
Did anyone expect that Bill Clinton would just silently watch as his words were twisted so that they in no way resembled their original meaning? It's fine to talk about this campaign being about Hillary Clinton and her opponents, and not wanting Bill Clinton to overshadow it. But that doesn't mean he has to be a doormat when his reputation is being unfairly attacked.

Joe whines about "blaming the press".
Joe and his gang got Bush elected, and they are STILL refusing to do their jobs and REPORT.
No wonder they didn't get it when Colbert performed at the annual dinner.
You've got blood on your hands, Joe, and crap for brains.
Don't miss your bus.
Posted by kmblue | January 24, 2008 8:32 PM
"he blames the press for not covering the substance of the campaign?"
Everyone knows that Joe Klein is not responsible for the actions of Joe Klein. He can't help himself! He sees John McCain and can't help to ignore the substance of his remarks. "Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"

"The truth is there are two hundred white women sexually assaulted in America by black and Latino men for every one minority woman assaulted by whites." –Hillary Clinton, 1994

As a canadian even though our opinion of your election might not matter to you but it does to the rest of Canada. Since we follow close behind when there is a economic recession spiraling our way because of the global economy. Yes the USA is a global super power and has alot of Economic and Political momentum.
Therefore the question I have to all of you people south of the Canadian border.
If a democrat gets elected president...Than how can you not elect the person into office who has the most EXPERIENCE! Hilary Clinton!
This election is about qualified experience and the fact that her husband had 8 years in office with a balanced budget.....what more do you need to see....
Please vote for Experience it affects all of us.
thanks

Not a plus Mr. Obama.
The press chooses to ignore when you and your wife backstab and misrepresent the Clintons contribution which is something that should give you shame.
The LAST TIME someone had this country well liked and functioning with a surplus of trillions was a man named Clinton. And his wife knows how to get us back there.
This is a perfect example of a disgrace from the Kennedy's./ How dare they preach legitmate style politics when they slew just as much dirt at Jimmy Carter, so much so there was no chance for Kennedy support when he(teddy) lost the nomination. Amazing his lack of memory.
Also Kennedy endorsed the last two LOSERS. Kerry, who didn''t want Clinton's help but now gets to stab them in the back, and Gore. Kennedy is far from a lucky charm.
Hillary Clinton has the truest, most realistic view of today's world.
This is all about the country not being ready for a woman president.
Obama is all rhetoric no substance. Kenndy is older in the establishment than the clintons, but obama loves this shot from the past. This is the one who should get the page turned on.
Kennedy aligns himself with the civil rights candidate. He could have helped the rights of equality for women. The gender Kenndey doesn't mind dating, trolling, and oh yes, leaving at the bottom of a lake when it suits him.
Hillary, in all the smoke and mirrors and want of a real vision that is the Obama and wishfull thinkers, Hillary is the one who has that vision.
Shame on the Kennedy's yet again. Vote for Hillary, when all the smoke clears from the media darling, I do not want a political equivilant of a 16 year old teenager in the oval office with a manual, because they have no experience, when the next crisis breaks out in this nation.
