A stealth Mitt Romney endorsement from the religious right's powerbrokers?
Christian right leaders are abuzz today because a new online candidate guide that has been posted by Focus on the Family Action, the political arm of Jim Dobson's conservative Christian empire. The webpage offers edited excerpts of recent webcasts with the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins, explaining where the candidates stand on "pro-family issues."
The video about Rudy Giuliani suggests that the former New York mayor would appoint a judge who would uphold Roe v. Wade, and knocks him for dressing in drag on Saturday Night Live. The video on John McCain hits the Arizona senator for campaign finance reform, his opposition to the federal marriage amendment and his 2000 comments about Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. "You want someone to depend on when you are in a fight, and you never really know where he is going to be," says Perkins about McCain in the video.
This is all to be expected. But then it gets controversial. The video on Mike Huckabee, who is the overwhelming favorite among the nation's evangelical voters, is surprisingly harsh. After praising Huckabee's social views, both Perkins and Tom Minnery, a policy expert at Focus on the Family, hammer the former Arkansas governor for his foreign policy views. Minnery suggests that Huckabee does not understand the cause for which American troops are dying in Iraq. Then Perkins suggests that Huckabee lacks the fiscal and national security credentials needed for a conservative presidential candidate. "The conservatives have been successful in electing candidates, and presidents in particular, when they have had a candidate that can address not only the social issues, [but] the fiscal issues and the defense issues," says Perkins. "[Huckabee] has got to reach out to the fiscal conservatives and the security conservatives." Ouch.
So what about Romney? He comes up roses. "He has staked out positions on all three of the areas that we have discussed," says Perkins. "I think he continues to be solidly conservative." Then Minnery defends Romney from criticism that he is too polished and smooth. "Mitt Romney has acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith," Minnery adds. "But on the social issues we are so similar."
Mat Staver, a Huckabee supporter and legal advisor to churches, says the videos go right up to the line that walls off issue advocacy from a candidate endorsement. "I think it does endorse Romney," said Staver, the dean of the Liberty University School of Law. "The presentation on Huckabee was lacking objectivity and context."
Minnery, for his part, told me this afternoon that, “There was no endorsement implied or intended.” Decide for yourself. The videos can be found here.
UPDATE: I first viewed the Huckabee video before 11 a.m. eastern time Thursday. When I spoke with Minnery in the afternoon, he said the video had been updated in the morning. As it turns out, the update to the Huckabee video came after I first viewed it. The new version of the video, which you will see if you click the above link, contains a significantly longer segment praising Huckabee's social issue stands than was originally posted. The criticism of Huckabee appears unchanged. When I asked Staver what he thought of the new version of the video, he said, "After their attention was called to this, apparently Focus on the Family Action backtracked and edited the portion on Huckabee to make it appear more objective."

Interesting post.
Focus on the Pharisees is very much a GOP insider organization. It's not a huge surprise that they're suspicious of Huckabee.

Its always gratifying to know that the closest followers of the one who came preaching forgivenness, mercy and submission and reminding us that his Kingdom was not "of this world" nevertheless are holding Presidential candidates accountable for being insufficiently belligerent.

Does anyone else find it odd that a group called "Focus on the Family" is judging candidates on their bona fides on fiscal, foreign, and national security policies? And that their judgement on Huckabee is negative because he does not toe the "conservative" line on those issues?
This may hurt Huckabee, but I think its gonna hurt FotF more, because it exposes them as tools of the GOP establishment.

The establishment inside the Beltway "evangelical leaders" prefer a winner to someone that shares their beliefs. For them it is about power not ethics. The Christian Coalition robo calls for Romney into Florida are causing an angry outcry by rank and file evangelicans. Who paid for the calls? My bet is the same Romney donors that paid off the Club for Growth.

Romney may have acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Protestant Christian faith, but it most certainly is Christian.
Christ is the center and foundation of the Mormon religion, and even a part of its official name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mormonism is not a Protestant religion because it did not emerge out of protest (reformation) of the Roman Catholic Church. Rather, it is an attempt to restore Christianity as it was practiced anciently in Christ's time, with prophets, apostles, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth. Mormons also do not accept the Nicene Creed (ca 200 AD) as authentic New Testament Christianity. (The Nicene Creed defined God as unknowable and without shape or form. Most modern Christian churches still subscribe to this questionable creed that was decided by Constantine, not Jesus or his Apostles, to much protest. A monk is said to have cried out, "They have taken my God from me." To Mormons, Christ is both personal and knowable, and the Son of God, not merely an alternate manifestation of God.)
The Mormon church is not "new wine in old bottles," to use New Testament language.

I agree with mediasux - what has fiscal issues, foreign policy, and campaign finance reform or immigration have to do with evangelical belief or family issues? If anything, compassion relating to illegal alliens is directly in line with Christ's teaching and supports families (be they legal or illegal).

here's the thing, mediasux, the GOP establishment is ALL tools! FotF won't be hurt by being authoritarian - it's what is expected.
For the same reason, I expect Mitt to win, since the GOP grass roots are too weak to do anything but fall into line behind their establishment overlords. (Rush, FotF, etc)

Jed, the primary mark against Mormonism noted by Christians is that Mormonism is largely built on the premise that many elements and narratives of Biblical scripture are wrong. Christ's involvement isn't really the point. Islam after all accepts Jesus as a prophet, just not the one carrying the final word of God.

Let's see if I get this straight.
A chief spokesman of the leading evangelical public affairs organization in the country flatly asserts that a candidate for president of the United States -- who's a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- allegedly "acknowledged" that his faith is "not a Christian faith."
And Time just breezes right past that blockbuster?
Did Mitt in fact say his faith was not Christian? That would, you'd think, be front page news for a guy who's accused of reversing himself on a host of other issues and who has a pattern of statements later proven demonstrably false ("I marched with Martin Luther King," "I have a gun of my own," etc.)
But if he didn't say it, how does a prominent and credible organization such as FOTF explain publicly alleging that he did?
Not a pretty picture whatever the answer to those two questions.

I was disappointed in the S. Carolina coverage analysis of Huckabee, also. I was upset by what your article points out. But I was also agitated by the revelation by Owen Smith of Palmetto Family Alliance regarding the LARGE check given to his organization (Fully Associated with Focus) by McCain's PAC.
That could have been small change compared to a Romney "donation". I continue to believe in and love God but I sure get tired of his followers letting him down.

By this time, after tiresome endless debates, sharp voters are looking at the candidates for themselves and are going to decide for themselves.
Sharp voters know about all the lying, risk to the country’s security and media manipulation by Romney, since he owns most of it. Sharp voters turn their heads and look back at the condition Romney left his state in.
They turn their heads the other way and look at the cross dressing, immorality, micromanaging, ineptness and disatisfaction Giuliani left among his workers in New York.
Sharp voters compare Romney’s and Giuliani’s messes to HUCKABEE’s successes and wish they could have that for themselves and their nation.
HUCKABEE’s constituents wish they could have him back. But they have already elected him more than the normal limits. Romney’s and Giuliani’s constituents are glad to see them go and are frantically trying to warn the rest of the country.
Sharp voters look at McCain and see tired old sameness. Someone who represents ineffectual status quo. They try to figure out where he stands and what he will do but he doesn’t have any answers, ideas, vision or skills and stammers, evades and eventually comes to an ineffective stop. The voters burn for better!
HUCKABEE is the only caretaker I trust to appoint conservative judges to the US Supreme Court and help save our once great nation, as he did in Arkansas. His stellar record SHOUTS for itself. As one Arkansan put it, “What a bright light Mike HUCKABEE was. What a bunch of dim bulbs he left behind!”

Just wanted to echo what other's have said - Mitt Romney has certainly *not* said that he is not a Christian and in fact has made statements to the contrary. Although Michael Scherer, who posted this, did not make that statement himself, he might want to add an update or correction at the end of this article to get the record straight.

Romney spin artists are trying to claim it was a microphone malfunction.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who proposes changes to the IRS that will restore freedom to America's pulpits. Yet this is never mentioned by the "religious right". All the other candidates are just more intrusion and control by Caesar. Put Christ backi as the Head of His church! Vote Ron Paul!

Acknowledging partial disagreement with the evangelical concept of Christ does not mean Romney accepts the efforts of fanatics among them to function as religious bouncers and kick anyone they want out of the Christianity club.
Romney understands these points of difference don’t make Mormons less Christian, but more Christian.
He won’t say this, of course, because in our democratic system leaders are supposed to serve the interests and protect the religious freedom of all citizens, and challenging the religious beliefs of any particular group is not a good way to do that.
He’s running for commander-in-chief, not pastor-in-chief. It’s a concept Romney lives by that Huckabee gives lip service to when he’s not practicing religious identity politics.

I think you folks -- especially Michael Scherer -- are all assuming that we evangelicals are lock-step behind Huckabee.
That simply isn't the case. I have chatted the issue around with fellow evangelicals; there is much doubt and skepticism about Huckabee -- some see him as a Republican Jimmy Carter -- and there is much more suppport for Romney -- despite his Mormonism . . . in my circles, at least.
