Underplayed Story of the Day: Rudy Giuliani's Two Americas

In an interview with the Tampa Tribune editorial board, the presidential candidate who recently turned around his chartered jet to seek emergency medical treatment was asked why Republican candidates aren't talking about health care, and he explained:

"I suspect that our Democratic colleagues would get that question more often in a Democratic audience than we get in a Republican audience," he said. "Maybe more Democrats are concerned about their health care than Republicans, maybe because Republicans have health care or maybe Republicans generally like the idea of private solutions."

That must be it.

four legs good:

Oh. My. God.

He really is tone deaf. As well as a jerk.

Florida:

But Chris Matthews wants Rudy! to be his daddy, so The Villagers will give him a pass on these flubs.

liberalrob:

Flub? More like straight talk.

Republicans don't feel the need to talk about health care because they either have good insurance already or can afford care that's not covered. They've got theirs, sux to be the rest of y'all.

Sounds like a Republican to me.

joeksux:

according to a newsweek poll conducted October 21-November 1, 22% of Democrats, and only 14% of Republicans, said that health care was their number one issue.

(and, getting back to the subject of how the media manipulates the campaign landscape-- remember the media attention given to the "drivers licenses for undocumented aliens" to-do. Well, according to this poll, immigration is the #1 issue for only 3% of democrats...)

Jim, Foolish Literalist:

What liberalrob said. Rudy is playing to his base within the party, the money people. The Church people have already gone to Huckabee.

I don't know if there are enough Randian/Country Club types to get him to the White House, however infatuated Tweety Mathews may be with his machismo.

(KT: you gettin' snarky on us? Good on ya)

Enceladus:

Ah, yes: "private solutions."

Which in reality means: a solution that serves your health-care company's profit margins while leaving you mired in payments.

But I guess some people are perfectly happy to have the economic or political boot on their neck. Probably some Freudian "daddy" issues involved there, too.

The media attention had nothing to do with the substance of the immigration question or whether it was advisable for cities to issue drivers' licenses to undocumented aliens. The issue could have been how many monkeys are jumping on the bed and the media would have still done what it did. What the media did is punish Hillary Clinton for saying that she understands why the mayor is doing it but that she would not necessarily do it herself and that we will be stuck making these half-assed decisions until there is comprehensive immigration reform.

The problem was that during a debate, when you are granted thirty seconds to answer a question, it is impossible to adequately characterize a complex situation like that. So the media took one of the few opportunities presented to them to 'test' the candidate to see how well she stood up to ridiculous jabs. And it is not just Hillary Clinton either - the others get a taste too. That appears to be the only job that the media wishes to do anymore.

Great journalism from Tumulty. Thanks for trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, trying to put his quote into context, and contacting the campaign for their explanation.

Say, does anyone want to make $10? I'll send that to the first person that goes to a Ruuudy appearance and asks him this question and gets his response on video. Someone has to do some real reporting, and it sure as heck isn't going to be MSM hacks like Tumulty.

Well, as the Daily Show pointed out, the Republicans have the Victorian vote down anyway (and the media's--which tends to ignore unglamorous topics like this).

J.J. Author Profile Page:

And did I mention that the Right loves those Victorians?

sy:

"...[O]r maybe Republicans generally like the idea of private solutions."

Like....

1. Blackwater
2. Halliburton
3. Guantanamo Bay
4. Abu Ghraib
5. Rendition
6. Signing statements
7. Destruction of evidence of HIT (harsh interrogation techniques a/k/a torture)
8. Outing covert intelligence agents
etc.

Sounds about right.

Hey, we're an Empire now. The Victorians are back. Benjamin Disraeli rocks. Screw Herbert Hoover and the muddlers that came after him. Benjamin Disraeli didn't need no welfare state, or for that matter child labor laws. As Benjamin Disraeli put it, "Poverty is a crime," right, Gertrude Himmelfarb?

J.J. Author Profile Page:

Well, I should say that when Disraeli said poverty was a crime he was actually disagreeing with the Victorian Poor Laws that made it that way. But he was disagreeing using some Victorian reasoning that should be distasteful in the 21st century...

J.J. Author Profile Page:

Also, that Weekly Standard article makes a lot of Disraeli's Judaism--I have no problem with that at all. What I do have a problem with is this hagiography for British Victorian Imperialists. America was built specifically not to fall into the trap of empire that European states fell so easily into. And also it was also built on an idea of opportunity that wasn't available to the British Victorian poor. And at its best it didn't prejudge the lower classes the way the 19th century British elites did...

OK, enough of this stuff for one day...

That's kind of a lot though, don't you think? If slightly less than 1 in 6 of your voters have health care as their #1 issue, don't you think it would be worthwhile to mention it? Especially if you consider that probably a larger percentage have it as their #2 or #3 issue.
