The Hillary You Know

This has always been channeling of right wing noise machine into the Village, plus the continued anger of the Sally Quinn salon for Bill Clinton's refusal to validate her importance.

She is a charming and vivacious person, who is intently on message because she has been left no option by a virulent right wing noise machine that streams directly into the pages of the Washing ton Post, and from there frames the narrative in the television shows. To take Chris Matthews as one example, his treatment of her is appalling, and entirely without basis. Every NYT article I've read about her being "divisive" and a "problem" because of her personality cites Republican operatives. Even off the record, you can't a Democrat who says that. You can find that about Schumer, easily.

And this ridiculous story that she is not likable is easily refuted by the stories we've seen about how effectively she has worked with Senators on the other side of the aisle--in contrast to our senior Senator, Mr. TV personality, Schumer.

She is as likable as any politician out there, perhaps less than McCain or Huckabee, but certainly much more than Giuliani or that strutting martinet in the White House.

Rather than make up stories about why Iowans vote for her even though they don't like her, why not consider the possibility that they like her just fine.

This is a ridiculous story, concocted by Limbaugh and the GRWC, and piped into the Village.

And, no, I don't think she would be a good president. But this is absolutely ridiculous.

But why should members of the media carefully consider their "Hillary narrative"? They don't carefully craft narratives for other candidates do they?

For example, Mitt (He's a Mormon everyone) Romney and Mike (OMG! An ex-Baptist minister) Huckabee. How about Rudy (the lisping meanie) Guliani? Or even John (old guy) McCain?

Or are you saying that all the negative Republican narratives are carefully planned too, so your media peers shouldn't get sloppy and paint Democrats in a similar negative light? We don't want Hillary (dour and manipulative) Clinton; rather, we want Hillary (heroic, long-suffering, and "experienced") Clinton. Yes?

I'm loathe to defend the press corp in this sort of context but I will note that the issue of Hillary's "likeability" does arise naturally simply because the people who don't like her for whatever reason (beyond me) loathe her passionately.

Since the press couldn't reasonably cover this aspect lest they turn over the rock of civility that most mouth-foaming wingnuts can be found under, they instead have to talk in general terms about her "likability"

Like "states rights" and "family values", those who know the code know what's actually being said, and those who don't can go on about their lives without wondering what all the fuss is about.

That may be Paul. But those people don't vote in Democratic primaries.

As for the press, it seems completely irresponsible to take smears and vicious attacks that are entirely partisan, and then say that she has an image problem.

You don't see the press reflecting the deep dislike the left has for Bush. You don't see them talking about how viscerally he's hated by so many people. And that's happened without talk radio to egg it on. But do you see articles about the difficulties Bush, and the republican presidential candidates face because Bush is least popular president in modern history. Do you see references to the "smirking chimp"? Do you see them routinely characterizing him as having to overcome his image as an inarticulate incompetent?

No. Because that would be partisan.

This is no better than talking about Obama's Muslim father. There's nothing to it. She's perfectly likable. And to the degree she is loathed by people, it's because they've been fed a caricature that is irresponsible and dishonest to continue to advance.

I know this may be difficult for you to understand, but the media doesn't talk about this kind of thing because most of them are in complete agreement. They share the deep dislike that many on the left have for the President, and while they don't use the names and titles you are giving so openly, they reinforce that stereotype constantly because, to them, it's common sense.

They write more openly about the deep dislike for Hillary because they are surprised by it. "How can anyone not like Hillary?" they ask. And when they ask the question and posit answers, they think, "oh, it must be that she comes off as stern; yes, that's it."

But it's much more than that. Think back to when Senator Clinton, on network television, calmly called the accusations of her husband's affair with Monica Lewinski part of a "vast right-wing conspiracy." Conservatives have been laughing at her ever since. But now she wants to be President and, really, most conservatives would rather vote for Micky Mouse than Hillary Clinton.

Conservatives are laughing through their own ignorance. There was indeed a right-wing conspiracy complete with reclusive billionaires funding unscrupulous muckrakers and partisan legal societies dedicated to overturning his presidency. It has been in the news; there have been books and movies about it. Conservatives were manipulated into hating the Clintons for false reasons and they fell for it. If you want to hate the Clintons for their policies then fine; but 99% of what you were taught to hate them for is untrue.

They are pro-labor so they must be liberal because conservatives are all about the anti-labor. Mother Jones is not that crazy about Hillary because of her trade policies.

If you want to believe the myth of 'Liberal Media' then go ahead but it is another example of conservative manipulation. There have been studies that show that the media is more critical of Democrats than they are of Republicans. Conservatives own an entire news network. Conservatives dominate AM radio. Conservatives run newspapers owned by bizarre South Korean billionaires who think that they are the Messiah. Conservatives are over-represented on the op-ed pages of every major newspaper INCLUDING the supposedly liberal NYT and WaPo.

But maybe we are disagreeing because I do not understand what you mean by the 'culture of liberalism'. Fair enough. If you are defining the culture of liberalism as that which questions and challenges those in power then I completely agree with the label. Because that is just another way of saying 'the opposite of slavery'.

I went and looked up the part of the piece that made Bob so upset, and it was this mindblower from Nobel Laureate Steve Adubato ("Media Analyst" is his apparent title):

...most ardent Clinton supporters know that Clinton’s blasting the media on the experience issue is a disingenuous diversion. They know the campaign is stumbling and they know it’s not the media’s fault.

What’s really ironic about Clinton’s argument is that it has been the Clinton campaign that has been exceedingly secretive about disclosing the former First Lady’s records when she was in the White House. Bill and Hillary want the media to focus on are only the positive aspects of her experience but won’t say a word about such topics as “Travelgate;” “Whitewater;” exactly how Vince Foster died; missing billing records; or Hillary’s role as architect of the failed effort for universal healthcare.

When things go wrong for the Clintons’ they have a tendency to blame others. When the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, Hillary was on the TODAY Show with Matt Lauer, blaming the whole thing on a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” And when Hillary’s campaign sputters and her polls number drop, Clinton blames the media for his wife’s problems. One wonders when either Clinton will simply step up and take full responsibility for their mistakes without blaming the media or those who they think conspire against them. It really is hard to explain such a world...unless maybe we stopped talking so much about the candidates, and started talking about the people who are talking about the candidates.

This is hilarious. Now that they've gotten the media so cowed into printing flat out lies for the sake of "balance" and stuffed their pages with people from the National Review and the Weekly Standard.

And so NOW the reason they don't write bad things about Bush is because they believe them. And the reason they write bad things about Clinton is because they're surprised by them.

Ana, IMHO it's only weird because for some reason, journalists can't talk about or even admit to their role in pushing these narratives, which are often concocted by the GOP Smear/Propaganda/Brainwashing Machine.

One of the few journalists I've heard questioning the narratives is Brian Lehrer, who does an interview show on public radio station WNYC in New York. Lehrer interviewed The New York Times' Don Van Natta, who co-wrote an anti-Hillary book with the despicably dishonest Jeff Gerth (co-creator of the phony Whitewater "scandal"). When Van Natta brought up one of the tiredest narratives, that Hillary is ambitious, Lehrer asked the obvious bur rarely asked question: Wasn't he criticizing Hillary for behavior that's common among politicians? After all, is there a politician alive who's not ambitious?

Van Natta ungracefully stumbled around as he tried to avoid answering the question directly. My guess is that few interviewers or editors had ever asked him the obvious question Lehrer asked, so he really wasn't prepared to answer it.

I find it somewhat amusing that both liberals and conservatives seem to be convinced that the press is biased against them. As someone with little use for either major party, it seems to me that there are segments of the national press that clearly have a liberal bias, and other segments of the national press that clearly have a conservative bias. Mostly, though, it seems to me that virtually all of the national press has a profit bias. Coverage seems to be dictated more by entertainment value than by newsworthiness.

Of course there are studies showing a conservative bias. There are also studies showing a liberal bias. In case you haven't noticed, studies can be manipulated to show just about anything that you please, as long as a sympathetic group is willing to fund the "research". For such issues, I tend to put more faith in polls (or at least in polls conducted by reputable pollsters who are open regarding their methodologies). Such polls have consistently shown that more Americans believe that there is an overall liberal bias to the national media, and that many more reporters self-identify as liberals or Democrats than as conservatives or Republicans. Is your "vast right-wing conspiracy" so insidious as to be able to coordinate large-scale misrepresentation of personal political philosophy, leading all of those conservative reporters to claim that they are liberal?

I think in the beginning she got out made strides to be "likable" and think she succeeded. However, I feel the situation that she finds herself in with Obama creeping in on her in the polls is still related to the comment on the illegal immigrants and drivers license. It really illustrated to many Americans what some of us have known about the Clintons for years, this coming from someone who voted for Clinton, they will do or say anything that is politically expedient.

This illustrated her calculating and hesitancy to make a decision without consulting polls and focus groups. That is not what makes a true leader. If we just needed every Americans' opinion then the president would be nothing more than a mouthpiece and we could all take turns playing that role. The president's role is the leader of this country. One requirement is to make those tough decisions on the spot. She shouldn't have to consult anyone to make a decision and I think her display at the debate put a lot of doubt about her leadership skills. It also speaks volumes about her character.

She also is quick to remind everyone the question was unfair, that she was ganged up on, that she wasn't on her game that night. Well welcome to the toughest, most thankless, most critisied job on earth. It would have shown much more character if she had moved on and not played the gender card, not made inuendo that she was being treated unfairly by the other canidates, and saying that singling her out was unfair.

I think all these things have put that reasonable doubt in her mind. I find it also interesting that successful liberal women are also her toughest crowd to win over*. I think also she peaked to early and they haven't even gotten to the big guns yet and she took a big hit from the large double digit leads in the primary states she did enjoy.

I think most now are catching on to Senator Clinton's game. Once the commercials are put together that show her many speeches touting the many positions that she has had on the war, illegal immigration, and a host of others, it will be her undoing. Clinton's are good at getting others to destroy evidence like Sandy Berger, but she can't destroy that much evidence. Not to mention White Water and where all that money went from the Arkansas Development Financial Authority to the Caymans that was obviously not disclosed in her finacial report that was released.

She has a long year a head.

Robert Sullivan - I agree with the 'profit bias' explanation completely. It has resulted in a media that seeks out scandal and conflict as a substitute for substance and discussion.

But the conservative bias is real. I only have to repeat my question: Can you name for me the components of the liberal media? Otherwise we are just trading stories about our perceptions.

The polls that you mention are interesting but I do not find them persuasive. Of course the majority of Americans believe that there is a 'liberal media bias' because conservatives have engaged in a decades long campaign to convince people that there is one and motivate them to hassle media organizations to be more conservative. This last part was their 'working the refs' strategy and it has worked - but it has also resulted in extremely poor journalism.

The poll that indicated a journalist's self-assignment means little to me as well. I care more about the journalistic product than how they vote. And the credible studies that have looked at that journalistic product have determined that supposedly liberal publications are slightly more critical on Dems than on Republicans, while the conservative publications are overwhelmingly critical of Dems and very easy on Republicans.

Plus, I can provide you a long list of the conservative media network complete with specific names of the people involved. And I probably would not even be scratching the surface.

I'm also curious regarding why you think the Republicans would be smearing HRC at this point. One would think that they would be cheering for her in the primaries, given that Obama seems to have a lot more draw among the moderates that will decide the general election. If HRC is indeed being treated unfairly in the press, I would suspect them of supporting one of the other Democratic candidates.

Maybe this is because they view themselves as part of an elite interest group whose role is to select candidates for the public, and whose personal opinions of the candidates are terribly important in this respect.

Could it be that the only ivy league journalist school Columbia is one of the most liberal colleges in the country? Could it also be that most journalist list themselves as liberal / democrat?

I would also argue that their is a bias when it comes to certain kinds of stories. Such as corruption, or sexual persuation.

Also you can read into alot of opinion in many of the stories that is not necessary. It is sensationalism and it is usually done on a liberal slant. They maybe to sell pages and periodicals as Robert was suggesting but, it happens.

Umm...maybe it would be a good idea to define what liberalism and conservatism actually means.

I don't think that we share a common understanding of the terms involved.

We can go on all day about who's "liberal", but if you think that Hillary Clinton represents "the far left", then we're probably never going to agree on who's actually more or less conservative.

Maybe that's how conservatives derive their "liberal media" theory--by ascribing to the word "liberal" whatever they feel like it means at any given moment.

Well it is obvious that you couldn't take the dictionary defined liberalism as a true statement, you would have to combine it with bits of socialism as well. This based on the extreme views of her's to create the total nanny state style of government.

Not to mention with Hillary you really can't define her as anything but an opportunist based on her votes. So maybe you have a point. She does like to run, and label herself with that crowd for the netroots and democrats though.

As to the liberal media, that is based on the stories themselves being told, and omitting information that is prevelent to understanding why certain actions are being taken. The omission of these key details.

The thing is, Judgement, that the non-Rush listening, non-Fox News watching, non-home schooling, non-holy roller Puritan "liberalism" that you're talking about is being just plain normal in most of the most populated regions of the United States.

You're basically calling anybody who isn't one of you a "liberal". That means everybody else. So of course you think that there's a "liberal media", because they show gay guys on TV, and teach evolution in PBS science class shows, and say "Happy Holidays" because some people where they broadcast might be Jewish or Hindu or whatever. Plus, you can watch conservative television and listen to conservative radio and read conservative blogs (aimed at advertising to that niche market).

The problem with thinking that every book that isn't written by Ann Coulter is "Liberal" is that the label simply doesn't magically apply to anything not labeled conservative.
"Liberal" to Rush means "normal" to most people in Connecticut.

I have yet to see anybody produce a list of the components of the 'Liberal Media'.

Judgement, the data says that most *reporters* are prominently liberal. Editors and establishment columnists are overwhelmingly conservative. I doubt it's an accident that the side of journalism actually exposed to reality day in and day out and have far more ethical standards to meet (dampening their influence on the media narrative) is not a key component of the right-wing media apparatus.
