Will the assassination of Benazir Bhutto have any impact on the presidential primaries?

No.

Will that stop the media from obsessing over the impact of Bhutto's assassination on the campaign. Of course not -- because right now all eyes in the media are focussed on Iowa for the next five days, and in the media universe everything has to be related to the primaries.

And, of course, thanks to the piss-poor job of coverage by people like you, the public has very little idea of the nature of the political situation in Pakistan, what US policy is toward the Pakistani political situation, and any criticism of that policy that the various candidates might have had. And because the candidates can't do anything about our policy in Pakistan, and events there are out of our control, nothing the candidates say is going to make any real difference.

Of course, rather than discuss the fact that Bhutto's assassination represents a massive failure of Bush's foreign policy approach --- you want to talk about how it affects the campaign....

I know this much: what happened was good news for Republicans and bad news for Democrats. Everything is.

You can see in the last 24 hours the punditocracy making the relatively simplistic argument that the bhutto assasination helps Hillary and McCain. It may, but only because of self fulfilling media prphesy, not for any objective reason for why they ought to benefit, at Yglasias point out here:

There is a strong argument to make that Hillary and Mccain, in supporting the Iraq war, supported a strategy of diverting resources away from the fight against Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan and this, combined with the coddling of the weak and happless Musharraf, contributed to Al Qaeda getting stronger and stronger over there while we went on a WMD wild goose chase in Iraq.

Barack Obama, while not perfect, has been much closer to the mark than the Hillary/Bush/Punditocracy conventional wisdom:

The other thing the villagers are trying to do is scare the public in a Bushian 9/11 way to say that because this is a dangerous world we should go back to the familiar approaches of those whose policies created the conditions for the extremists to re-group in Afghanistan and Pakistan by diverting to Iraq instead. This pedestrian thinking tells Americans that when things are uncertain, we should go with those who beat their chest the hardest in their respective parties, HIllary and McCain, because that is what is going to keep us safe.

If you look at the coverage, the key part of the villager plan to scare voters into voting for HIllary is to overblow and exggerate the danger of pakistan nukes falling into Al Qaeda's hands. These pundits seem to think they know more than our Pentagon, who knows that the Nukes are secure, the pakastani Army is secular, and that 70% of the Pakastani's are moderates who would have elected Bhutto running on an anti-terrorist platform.

The fact of the matter is that today in the streets of pakistan the masses are blaming Musharraf for Bhutto and they are indirectly blaming us because we prop up Musharraf. So we are alienating all those moderates who would be sympathetic to our interests because once again, we prop up dictators who don't even do what we want to against the terrorists. Musharraf took all those Billions we gave him and developed weapon systems to fight India, not the terrorists.

The villagers basically buy into the Bill Clintons thinking that it is better to be "strong and wrong than weak and right." But strong and right is better than either of those options, Bill, and that is what Obama represents and Hillary does not.

Most of the punditocracy is taking the simplistic view that because bad stuff happens in the world, you should go with the same old approaches (Hillary/Bush), even if they contributed to the mess we are in. On issue after issue, Obama gets it right. Yes, it was a bit unfortunate that Obama and Axelrod had to talk politics in the midst of a tragedy, but the fact of the matter is that the beltway crowd was just itching to use this as a pretext to shift narratives in Hillary's favor even though her mistakes in the past contributed to the conditions we have now seen. Think of the 2004 election when days before the election, Bin Laden put out a video and John Kerry basically allowed himself to be boxed in and neutered to basically stop criticizing Bush for not getting the guy by diverting to Iraq. Barack Obama would have the guts to stand his ground and advocate for the truth...that our misguided conventional foreign policies fan the flames of terrorism, they don't defeat it no matter how much we beat our chests as we make the wrong decisions. You can see in yesterday that even if we have a terrorist attack in the general election campaign, Obama is not going to go hide in the corner like a Kerry would or be republican lite, like a Hillary would....he is going to agressively speak the truth and do what is right. That is called courage and character and it is just amazing that this so-called "inexperienced" candidate leaves the rest of the field in the dust when it comes to judgement and fortitude.

Finally, for those questioning why I'm not writing about Benazir Bhutto's death, I try not to write about topics unless I think I have something to say about them worth saying. What's there to say at this point? Nobody even knows yet who is responsible for her assassination; it's been less than 24 hours since it occurred; Pakistan is an incredibly complex country; and none of this is susceptible to facile, instantaneous analysis, despite how prevalent such analysis is.

For those demanding to read something, here is among the best commentaries I've read, from former intelligence officer A.J. Rossmiller, who warns against "any kind of rush to judgment." I also think the claims about how this is going to alter everything in our elections are vastly overstated. Pundits with nothing to do typically claim that every news event will "transform" elections...

Contrary to the prevailing views of our political and media elite -- virtually all of whom seem eager to debate how we should best resolve Pakistan's problems: demand elections? get rid of Musharraf? find a replacement for Bhutto? -- that country isn't our protectorate or our colony and I doubt that the average American voter wants candidates to prove that they can best manage Pakistan's internal political mess. We have substantial messes of our own and I suspect voters are more interested in how candidates will manage those.

As of late, Jay has been superb in the Swamp. In this post, however, he reverts to the traditional conventional beltway idiocy. After the show that Bush's 01'-5 "experienced team" (Cheney, Rummy, Powell, Wolfie, Abrams, etc.) gave us, it is hard for me to fathom anyone buying the sentiment that "in troubled times people long for experience" BS. It is time for a break from the past and a fresh start with a new outlook.

It seems to me that Obama has been warning about the dangers of Pakistan for years now, but those warnings have largely fallen on the deaf ears of the MSM. Now that his warnings look to be coming to fruition, we get told by the MSM that this hurts him and helps McCain and Clinton? WTF? Someone help me out here.

I didn't think that Carney would reduce his credibility even further, but now I'm forced to link to Juan Cole's blog entry entitled " Top Ten Myths about Iraq 2007":

10. Myth: The US public no longer sees Iraq as a central issue in the 2008 presidential campaign.

In a recent ABC News/ Washington Post poll, Iraq and the economy were virtually tied among voters nationally, with nearly a quarter of voters in each case saying it was their number one issue. The economy had become more important to them than in previous months (in November only 14% said it was their most pressing concern), but Iraq still rivals it as an issue!

2. Myth: Iraq has been "calm" in fall of 2007 and the Iraqi public, despite some grumbling, is not eager for the US to depart.

Fact: in the past 6 weeks, there have been an average of 600 attacks a month, or 20 a day, which has held steady since the beginning of November. About 600 civilians are being killed in direct political violence per month, but that number excludes deaths of soldiers and police. Across the board, Iraqis believe that their conflicts are mainly caused by the US military presence and they are eager for it to end.

Department released the 2007 Financial Report of the United States
Government. Candidly, if the federal government were a private
corporation and the same report came out this morning, our stock would
be dropping and there would be talk about whether the company's
management and directors needed a major shake-up.

Why do I say this? Because if you look at today's report, you'll see
that for the 11th straight year GAO was unable to express an opinion on
the consolidated financial statements of the U.S. Government, primarily
due to financial management problems within the Department of Defense.
GAO also noted a number of very serious internal control weaknesses.

and the GAO report on our financial situation:

three major impediments prevent the U.S. government from obtaining a clean opinion: (1) serious financial management problems at the Department of Defense, (2) the federal government's inability to adequately account for and reconcile intragovernmental activity and balances between federal agencies, and (3) the federal government's ineffective process for preparing the consolidated financial statements.

"Until the problems outlined in our audit report are adequately addressed, they will continue to have adverse implications for the federal government and American taxpayers," Walker said in a letter to the President and Congress.

"The federal government's fiscal exposures totaled approximately $53 trillion as of September 30, 2007, up more than $2 trillion from September 30, 2006, and an increase of more than $32 trillion from about $20 trillion as of September 30, 2000," Walker said. It's offensive in the extreme to intelligent people for Carney to blithely toss off the general acceptance by his colleagues of McCain's talking/debate point:

McCain was ready and eager to stress his muscular position in favor of the "surge" in Iraq, and he had plenty of opportunity to do so. The key moment came after Romney said the surge was "apparently working," and McCain challenged him. "No, not apparently, it's working," McCain responded sharply.

It's the political media disappearing themselves from the process again, and then disingenuously implying that a public perception phenomenon is some sort of natural occurrence that happens on its own, like a rain shower or a windy day. To intelligent people, the idea that a reduction of violence in Iraq from 2007 levels to 2005 levels is a "positive of sorts" and that the situation somehow ("Who, me?" shrugs Carney) "has receded as an issue" is insulting and absurd. What happened is that Republicans put out a message "we're winning" that their faithful stenographers ran with ("hey, its a new story") and then dared the Democrats to tell the country that anything about that message was false or misleading. When the press herd bleated back to the Democratic leadership "Are the Republicans right, or are you claiming that our troops are doing a bad job losing the war and failing in their mission", the Democratic leadership predictably went on vacation from commenting on that issue. And so the "issue recedes", because Lord knows that in the up-is-down world of political coverage, if the Democratic leadership doesn't offer a "newsworthy" enough response, that must mean that the Republicans are entirely correct and non-partisan in their assessments, and that whatever assertion was made must be accepted as conventional wisdom in the interest of "bipartisanship". All a Republican has to do is raise his masculine voice a little bit in a debate, count on the avoidance tactics which have been S.O.P for the Democratic leadership, and encourage the vapidity and laziness of the press corps, and Carney is right there to assure us that "Iraq has fallen from the top of the news" without a hint of self-awareness or irony.

I agree with what the above posters said about the first paragraph. Iraq is really important to voters.

Jay's second paragraph, though, isn't bad. Among GOP primary voters, McCain's support for an open-ended occupation in Iraq is a positive. Also, I agree with Jay that McCain is benefiting from not having been in the spotlight for a while. GOP voters have many reasons to dislike Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee, McCain, and Paul. But McCain's been off the radar for a bit, so he's coming around again by default.

The big question: is it too late for Thompson get some asteroid love too? Could the Thompson team actually be the hidden force behind this asteroid?

The answer is "yes" for two reasons: (1) historically, voters have gone for big, Aqua Velva-scented daddies during times of extreme asteroid jihadism and (2) his riveting performance on the "Law and Order" asteroid episode, in which Jack McCoy successfully prosecuted an asteroid for conspiracy to commit mayhem.

What about the Bhutto assassination and the resulting biographical studies of her life potentially leading to a renewed interest in female political leaders? Might that benefit Hillary? Your own colleague Joe Klein spoke of a meeting Hillary had with Bhutto (and himself, of course); can any other candidate make the same claim? Might that benefit Hillary? Musharraf has been more and more unable to control what goes on in the tribal areas of Pakistan; they are well-known havens for Al Qaeda terrorists and Taliban rebels. Obama declared he would not consult Musharraf before taking military action in that region. Might not the apparent Al Qaeda/Taliban assassination help Obama, given his strong statement?

I didn't understand what was up with the protesting Pakistani lawyers--but now I think I get it:

The most important of Pakistan’s founders was Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a lawyer who spent his early career fighting for Muslim-Hindu unity. Despairing of the prospects for peace and security for minority communities, he became in the 1940s a powerful and intransigent advocate for an independent Pakistan. Like Mohandas Gandhi, his internationally better-known comrade in the struggle against British rule, Jinnah was an eloquent British-trained lawyer. He was a charismatic speaker even though he addressed crowds in polished English, not their local languages. Also like Gandhi, Jinnah died before the state he helped to create took full form, leaving many to speculate on what institutions each might have nurtured. Not least, Jinnah had called for a secular government in the Islamic state of Pakistan. Indeed, advocates for a stricter Islamic state later complained that he and the Muslim League had merely used Islam to advance their secular agenda. He was not assassinated, but died in 1948 of the tuberculosis he had struggled to keep secret through the turbulent campaigns of the preceding decade.

And so for sixty years India has been wracked by communal violence and Pakistan has suffered recurrent collapses of democracy and periods of military rule. Benazir Bhutto’s father, once a popular president, was executed by one of the generals.

This kind of reasoning mystifies and amuses me. Because McCain and Giuliani are hawkish like Bush they benefit politically from the assassination. Presumably, their Bush-like hawkishness would prevent this kind of atrocity from happening in the future.

Just like Bush's hawkish foreign policy prevented the assassination on Thursday from happening. Except that it didn't.

The vice president, they say, is close to Musharraf and refuses to brook any U.S. criticism of him. Well, bobcn, the analysis you're talking about assumes that voters make decisions on baseless, irrational emotion.

This will have an impact, look at Huck. It also plays right into Hillary's Politics of fear.

Jay Carney, please take note: Your analysis is as reactionary as the behavior of the conservative voters you describe. Have you considered that this is a 'change election' with regards to Pakistan as well?

Here is my imaginary sequence of events for conservative voters:

Bhutto assassination-->Oh no! I'm scared!-->I need a strong daddy to protect me from the scary world!-->I will vote for the toughest talking candidate who this year is [XXXXX]!

Into this cliche steps Jay Carney with some follow-up questions:
"Do you hold the Bush administration policies responsible in any way for the situation in Pakistan?"
"How have the GOP candidates differentiated themselves from Bush with regard to Pakistan?"
"Why do you think that a continuation of Bush administration policies would create a better outcome than that which we are seeing today?"
"Why is it that conservatives base their votes on their level of pants-wetting fear?"
"Would you mind terribly if we continued this interview when you regained bladder control?"

See, here's the thing. Implicit in Jay Carney's prediction of conservative voter behavior is the fact that conservative voters are a bunch of pussies. Now, anybody that gave a damn about our civil liberties already knows that conservative voters are a bunch of pussies because we were constantly told that we had to sacrifice our liberties for a little bit of security. Liberals/Progressives shot back and said that we are braver than that and that men braver still had given their lives freely in order to establish those liberties. But the fearful conservatives won out.

What I would not give to see my imaginary Jay Carney transform into a real, living, breathing, follow-up-question-asking Jay Carney. A Jay Carney that is not afraid to look at his fellow conservatives and get to the bottom of their sphincter-control issues. A Jay Carney that is willing to look past Beltway Conventional Wisdom and stop producing the self-fulfilling memes that have poisoned political reporting! A Jay Carney for all peoples and all nations.....!!!

How do "people" even know about such things, from where would they get this information in such a context? How would folks create links between "the chaotic state of the world" and "the threat of Islamic terrorism" and "the turmoil in Pakistan" all by themselves?

What mysteriously invisible process is guiding Americans' thoughts in such a precisely knowable way?

What could it be, I wonder?

I very much loved Benazir Bhutto and considered her one of the most courageous women in the world. It is traumatic and very saddening to see how she was also assassinated just like her father. But is there any lesson for the American voters to learn from this? I believe so. (Try these: Politicians should NOT over-stay their welcomes. A political family should not dominate the politics of a country for many years. If you serve your country for 4yrs-8yrs, you should retire so others may have the opportunity to serve too.t) And if American voters refuse to learn that lesson by becoming careless in their choice of he next President, what happened in Pakistan may repeat here, because it is obvious that the destinies of the two countries are now intertwined.
