I personally think that the Huckabee ad is one of the most insidiously nasty ads around. The "subliminal" message sent by the cross is there not to just tell evangelicals "Huckabee is one of us", but also to emphasize that Romney (Mormons don't display crosses at all) and Rudy (Catholics usually display crucifixes, not crosses) are NOT "one of us."

As others have noted, the cross is not a symbol associated with Christmas (if you want a religious Christmas symbol, you go with The Star), but with Easter -- and would not have played such a prominient part in the commercial had it not been intentional.

I think back to the fact that, in 1944, on D-Day, as our troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, FDR addressed the nation and led the nation in prayer, asking for God's mercy and for victory. FDR even asked the nation to renew their faith in God and to devote themselves to "a continuance of prayer." My goodness, what a radical Christio-fascist that guy was!

Huckabee is doing well right now because he's not a typical politician. At least, he's not acting like one in this campaign. So, while Romney is comparing him to Bill Clinton, he is wishing people a Merry Christmas and reminding them that politics is not everything.

Huckabee understand that most of us don't live our whole lives obsessing over politics. Other candidates have yet to grasp that concept.

I'm surprised you guys have missed the obvious and very disturbing subliminal messages in Rudy's ads.

First, the ornament hanging over his left shoulder is obviously lighted to resemble the crescent moon of the Muslim faith, sending a secret message of conciliation to Islamo-fascist terrorists around the globe.

Plus, Rudy's reference to giving everyone a "fruitcake" is a blatant appeal to the GLBT vote which has supported him in past elections. Only someone who has marched in a gay pride parade and actually lived with a gay male couple after his divorce would be allowed to use the term "fruitcake" in a TV ad and not be purse-whipped by the folks at the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

To illustrate the point, can you imagine the uproar that would have ensued if Pastor Huckabee had mentioned "fruitcake" in his ad?

Of course, his ad was bad enough. The fireplace over his left shoulder may well have been a secret signal that he's really a "flaming" (fireplace) "liberal" (over his left shoulder).

On the other hand, it may be even more clever than that. Since the fireplace is not lit, it instead looks eerily similar to an EMPTY TOMB such as those carved into the rocky hillsides outside Jerusalem. Could Huckabee be so brazen? Wouldn't that have been more appropriate for his "Happy Easter" ad in another four months?
