Dodd's Filibuster Fallout

Chris Dodd may have missed crucial stump time in Iowa in order to stage his filibuster of the telcom immunity provision in the FISA bill. But it paid off. Harry Reid pulled the bill on Monday, which counts as a big victory for Dodd. And the netroots rewarded Dodd's efforts with an outpouring of support and activism. According to the Dodd campaign, more than 615,000 emails from more than 11,400 people were sent to other Senators lobbying them to back Dodd on the FISA filibuster. And more than 20,000 comments were posted on ChrisDodd.com supporting his cause. The filibuster also benefitted Dodd's long-shot presidential campaign. According to the campaign, it generated 20,000 new sign-ups and nearly $200,000 in contributions.

Which is not to say that Dodd's chances of surging into the crowded top tier of Democrats in the presidential race have improved very much. But, as Sam Stein reports on HuffingtonPost, some of his outside supporters are pushing for a consolation prize: they want Dodd to challenge Harry Reid for the job of Senate Majority Leader.

Crissy Dodd skyrockets to one (1) percent in the primary polling!

Genius!

They want Dodd to challenge Harry Reid for the job of Senate Majority Leader.

It only seems natural.

In the meantime the NYT reported this over the weekend:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/16/washington/16nsa.html?pagewanted=2&hp

In the drug-trafficking operation, the N.S.A. has been helping the Drug Enforcement Administration in collecting the phone records showing patterns of calls between the United States, Latin America and other drug-producing regions. The program dates to the 1990s, according to several government officials, but it appears to have expanded in recent years.

Might this help explain the eagerness of some of the Democratic leadership to assist BushCo in the act of sweeping all this under the rug.

Finding out would take some reporting effort, but the good news is the results might actually - you know - affect the primaries by exposing the truth.

I thought you guys lived for that.

oh wait........

joeksux:

Democrats need to stop drawing its leadership from states that are "traditionally" Republican. Reid has to lead a party that is to the left of the average Nevadan --- and the more actual leadership he shows, the more he endangers his chances for re-election (just ask Tom Daschle...)

So, regardless of who replaces Harry Reid, he really shouldn't be majority leader of the Democrats.

Florida:

It paid off by staunching Bush's assault on the Constitution. That's always worth it.

HH:

Why does Jay Torture Question Carney pass up the opportunity to warn Senator Dodd that he is at risk of appearing WEAK on national security. After all, any attempt to stop illegal behavior by the WAR LEADER is an attack on our national security.

Jay's response to the Torture Question was to warn Democrats that Americans are ambivalent about torture. If Americans can tolerate torture, surely they can approve of retroactively legalizing unlawful wiretapping.

Time Magazine isn't going to protect the Constitution if it means endangering national security in the face of the incredibly huge jihadi threat. Jay should be on the front lines of journalistic defenders of our national secuity state and our dear WAR LEADER. He needs to warn Senator Dodd about the danger of trying to protect the Constitution.

Any dead tree inkling that Time-CNN-AOL was a legit news entity flew out Ted Turner's ass today, when they bravely announced Vlad Putin as their Time cover Man Of The Year, instead of U.S. Army General and West Point grad Dave Petraeus.

No joke.

They picked friggin LIGHTS OUT Putin.

Old Stalin Junior himself.

Oh well.

HILLARY HAPPENS.

Mike M.:

Wow, finally a mention of Dodd's victory on Swampland. He'd be a great majority leader. He really earned the post this week.

Now I have an assignment for Time... A Dodd feature -- he was the first prominent Democrat to support Lamont and now he stands up to his own parties leadership over the FISA bill. There's a theme at work -- Dodd seems to actually care about what average people think. He is, in short, a long term Wahington insider who is becoming a populist in the best sense of the word. There really is a story there.

Jay:

What does it mean for the other (front-running) Democratic primary candidates' national nomination chances that they didn't show anything close to Dodd's leadership in a crucial moment like this last FISA vote?

How does the fact that Obama's people actually managed to put out a somewhat convincing official statement of support (whilst Clinton and Edwards did not) affect their respective standings with the Democratic base?

(I can't think of any other horserace-ese translations of the story with which to pique Jay's interest...anybody else?)

Wait, "LIGHTS OUT" Putin? I got "Crissy," that was a very clever play on the first name of the senior senator from Vermont. But, "LIGHTS OUT?" And what does Hillary have to do with it?

Maybe I'm trying too hard here...

Florida:

You guys stop picking on W's BFF, Puty Put. He looked into the man's soul, for crying out loud.

jayackroyd Author Profile Page:

You know Jay, it would have been at least a small sop to accuracy and completeness to note that Dodd lost to Reid by one vote for Dem senate leader. This isn't some kind of DFH prayer. The guy is a respected member of the senate who has never placed a hold or threatened a filibuster.

This is not some kind of throwaway action. It really is a statement of principle to the Constitution that senators swear an oath to. The least you could do is acknowledge that he is well regarded by his caucus, and could well be majority leader in the next cycle. Especially if there are 6 dem pickups.

Flubadubya:

Jay, when is Joe Klein, VSP, going to step out into the patriotic fresh air and do a Chris Dodd/FISA post? There's been plenty of time for Pete Hoekstra to tell him what to write.

Time4Tolerance:

Dodd would have not had the success he had without all of us contacting our senators, so his victory belongs to each and every one of us, especially you, Joke Line.

Good job!
