By my count, fully five of the first seven sentences in this post begin with "I". For Joe Klen, it seems, even the assassination of a major world political figure is just another excuse to talk about himself.

Of course popomo. And if you really want your head to explode catch the 1/2 hour The Wire special on HBO.
Joe talks about how great a journalist he is. And obsessed about facts.
He describes a jounalism that he no longer-if ever-practices.

Joe, why would you be so interested in what Hillary might have to say?

Are you going to parse it in the usual right-wing Clinton-bashing manner? Look DEEP into her message and find an uncrossed "t" or an undotted "i" that points directly toward some greater truth, as revealed by other right-wing pundits?

Come now, we are better than that!

Has it occurred to you that this is a VERY convenient event, for Musharref?

Joe is trying to mix it in with the rest of the horserace stuff - and it's bigger than that!

I think the reactions of the protagonists and antagonists over in Pakistan might - just might - be a wee bit more revelant, er, relevant, than any comments Hillary might make!

Man, what an awful post. First, as popomo notes, it's all about Joe dropping Bhutto's name. And then, it's about the impact it has on Clinton's campaign, because "I'll be interested" in hearing what she has to say.

And then he finds it "ironic" that she might well have been killed by the very people that Joe says she set herself up in opposition to. That's like saying it's ironic that Hamilton was killed in duel with Burr.

Close American ally Musharraf may well have had a leading rival assassinated using forces that our alliance with him is supposed to be eliminating.

And the question is what Clinton will say, in remembrance.

It will be a terrible irony if Joe Klein's assassin turns out to be his foot in his own mouth.

Doesn't anybody have anything to say about how, maybe, being such good buddies with the Saudis isn't in this country's best interests? I mean, sure, bashing Joe is fun and all, but let's look at the bigger picture. The biggest source of trouble in the region is also our biggest ally. WTF is that?

Let's see--Bhutto is assassinated and Sharif's supporters are attacked on the same day at a time when the two of them seem poised to push Musharraff from power...Why is it that Al Qaeda isn't the first suspect that comes to mind for me, but it is for Joe?

And I don't know how you can say such terrible things about the Saudis--they're Bush's BFFs!

Oh well, I'm sure QH will be along soon enough to rant about some conspiracy theory nonsense he heard on Rush Limbaugh.

In the days just before and after Bill Clinton delivered his State of the Union address to the new Republican-controlled Congress, he answered questions in a wide variety of forums in order to explain his plans.

On January 31, a week after the speech, the President flew to Boston and took questions from a group of teenagers. Their questions concerned the effects of legislation or government programs on their communities or schools. These were the questions (paraphrased in some cases):

* "We need stronger laws to punish those people who are caught selling guns to our youth. Basically, what can you do about that?"

* "I notice that often it's the media that is responsible for the negative portrayal of young people in our society." What can political leaders do to persuade the media that there is good news about youth?

* Apprenticeship programs and other ways to provide job training have been valuable for students not going to college. Can the Administration promote more of these programs?

* Programs designed to keep teenagers away from drugs and gangs often emphasize sports and seem geared mainly to boys. How can such programs be made more attractive to teenage girls?

* What is it like at Oxford? (This was from a student who was completing a new alternative-school curriculum in the Boston public schools, and who had been accepted at Oxford.)

* "We need more police officers who are trained to deal with all the other different cultures in our cities." What can the government do about that?

* "In Boston, Northeastern University has created a model of scholarships and other supports to help inner-city kids get to and stay in college. . . . As President, can you urge colleges across the country to do what Northeastern has done?"

Earlier in the month the President's performance had been assessed by the three network-news anchors: Peter Jennings, of ABC; Dan Rather, of CBS; and Tom Brokaw, of NBC. There was no overlap whatsoever between the questions the students asked and those raised by the anchors. None of the questions from these news professionals concerned the impact of legislation or politics on people's lives. Nearly all concerned the struggle for individual advancement among candidates. Peter Jennings, who met with Clinton as the Gingrich-Dole Congress was getting under way, asked whether Clinton had been eclipsed as a political leader by the Republicans. Dan Rather did interviews through January with prominent politicians—Senators Edward Kennedy, Phil Gramm, and Bob Dole—building up to a profile of Clinton two days after the State of the Union address. Every question he asked was about popularity or political tactics. He asked Phil Gramm to guess whether Newt Gingrich would enter the race (no) and whether Bill Clinton would be renominated by his party (yes). He asked Bob Dole what kind of mood the President seemed to be in, and whether Dole and Gingrich were, in effect, the new bosses of Washington. When Edward Kennedy began giving his views about the balanced-budget amendment, Rather steered him back on course: "Senator, you know I'd talk about these things the rest of the afternoon, but let's move quickly to politics. Do you expect Bill Clinton to be the Democratic nominee for re-election in 1996?"

The CBS Evening News profile of Clinton, which was narrated by Rather and was presented as part of the series Eye on America, contained no mention of Clinton's economic policy, his tax or budget plans, his failed attempt to pass a health-care proposal, his successful attempt to ratify NAFTA, his efforts to "reinvent government," or any substantive aspect of his proposals or plans in office. Its subject was exclusively Clinton's handling of his office—his "difficulty making decisions," his "waffling" at crucial moments. If Rather or his colleagues had any interest in the content of Clinton's speech as opposed to its political effect, neither the questions they asked nor the reports they aired revealed such a concern.

Tom Brokaw's questions were more substantive, but even he concentrated mainly on politics of the moment. How did the President feel about a poll showing that 61 percent of the public felt that he had no "strong convictions" and could be "easily swayed"? What did Bill Clinton think about Newt Gingrich? "Do you think he plays fair?" How did he like it that people kept shooting at the White House?

When ordinary citizens have a chance to pose questions to political leaders, they rarely ask about the game of politics. They want to know how the reality of politics will affect them—through taxes, programs, scholarship funds, wars. Journalists justify their intrusiveness and excesses by claiming that they are the public's representatives, asking the questions their fellow citizens would ask if they had the privilege of meeting with Presidents and senators. In fact they ask questions that only their fellow political professionals care about. And they often do so—as at the typical White House news conference—with a discourtesy and rancor that represent the public's views much less than they reflect the modern journalist's belief that being independent boils down to acting hostile.

In lieu of history or context, there is an anecdote; in lieu of analysis, idle speculation.

It is, therefore, exactly what people dislike about political journalism.

I guess the reason he's so interested in what Hillary might say, is that, obviously, it will show how tone-deaf democrats area about...whatever.

"Irony" is an incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs, a contradiction between appearance and reality.

For example, Joe Klein being labeled a political commentator and then reading what he actually writes.

Joe Klein reminds us that he knows people who know people. Joe Klein is a very important guy, not some scruffy blogger concerned with the truth and menial details.

Because Joe is an expert on all matters, he has already determined that there will be no significant geopolitcial consequences from Bhutto's assassination. That is why he considers the most important impact to be Hillary's reaction to Bhutto's death.

Joe knows Hillary even better than he knew Bhutto. Joe Klein knows people who know people. Joe Klein is a very important person, because Joe Klein says so.

It will be a terrible irony if Bhutto's assassin turns out to have a madrasa-educated Al Qaeda or Taliban extremist.

I think it will be a worse one if it does not.

For all her alleged flaws, Benazir Bhutto was an important symbol. The use of the term "martyred" in the announcement of her death is significant.

As to what Hillary will say, I'm sure it will be tasteful and appropriate.

Wow. The commentors came loaded for bear today. But is it possible that we can find something to discuss other than our unhappiness with the way that Joe Klein brandishes his destructive form of centrism?

Terrapinion makes a good point, but it remains breathtaking that Klein's entire reaction to such a momentous world event is so small-bore, egocentric, and obsessed with the transitory nonsense of the horse race.

This says it all. Blinded by the glow of the Clintoness, who could expect Joe to remember? But the key thing is that Joe Klein was the man on the scene. He was, like, you know, THERE, because he is important.

The idea that random individuals could assemble a more accurate picture of the world than someone like Joe Klein is radical nonsense. It would eliminate an entire culture of personality-based journalism. Joe Klein is not a man. He is not a reporter. Joe Klein is a media personality BRAND FRANCHISE, and thus he must be respected and read, irrespective of anything he says. He could post pure gibberish here, and his brand franchise would remain intact. That is what brand equity means.

Nobody expects Joe Klein to say anything important or useful. They expect Joe to define what is normal. Joe is one of the gatekeepers who determines what nonsense enters the popular mythology managed by the five corporations that control the American news media.

How could the Internet ever overthrow the Ozymandias-like might of Chutzpah Joe Klein?

Klein was trying to relate a personal encounter with Benazir Bhutto that he shared with Hillary Clinton. It wasn't strictly a horse-race reference, although the unnecessary last sentence leaving us wondering what Clinton will say is too close for comfort.

Klein has absolutely no leeway with the commentariat because of his abysmal FISA column and his arrogant mishandling of the subsequent furor, so he's going to take his lumps at any perceived self-aggrandizement. His rep is shot here and it's going to take a looong time to rebuild any kind of goodwill.

Try to get this concept as firmly anchored in your mind as possible: your thoughts on an event are never, ever as important as the event itself. Do you think that you might be able to write future columns starting with that presupposition?

Really, Stuart, I didn't see anything in "peace Song's" post that advocated invading Pakistan.

He's right. If Hillary sees Musharraf as an "ally," she's part of the poisonous thinking that got us where we are today. How to deal with Pakistan is a tough issue, but recognizing who our friends are, and who enemies of freedom are, with clear eyes, is certainly a good start.
